  • The Talyllyn Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Talyllyn) at a little over 7 miles long is a 2 ft 3 in gauge preserved railway located in Mid Wales running between the coastal town of Tywyn and Nant Gwernol near the village of Abergynolwyn. The line was opened in 1865 to transport slate from the quarries at Bryn Eglwys to Tywyn where transhipment wharfs alongside the standard gauge Cambrian Coast Railway allowed slate to be transported throughout the UK.
    The Talyllyn was the first narrow gauge railway in Britain to be authorised by an Act of Parliament to carry passengers using steam haulage. The railway defied the odds, although suffering from a lack of investment it managed to remained open and in 1951 became the first railway in the world to be preserved as a heritage railway run by volunteers.
    The railway operates as a tourist attraction and to cater for the increase in passenger numbers it has expanded its fleet of locomotives and coaching stock through the acquisition of rolling stock from closed lines such as the nearby Corris Railway as well as expanding its engineering capability to enable it to maintain its existing fleet as well as building new locomotives and carriages. Another milestone was reached in 1976 with the opening of an extension along the former mineral line between Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. A major rebuilding and extension of Tywyn Wharf station in 2005 included the expansion of the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum as well as improvements to passenger facilities. In 2021 as part of the “Slate landscape of north-west Wales” the railway was designated a World Heritage Site.
    The Rev. W. Awdry's series of children's railway books about the fictional “Skarloey Railway” were based on the Talyllyn Railway and preservation of the line also inspired the Ealing Comedy film “The Titfield Thunderbolt”.
    This video was filmed during the “Awdry Extravaganza 3” event, hence the faces and temporarily renamed locomotives. Events such as this one, not only provide an excuse to celebrate the much loved Rev Awdry children's railway books, it also raises the profile of the railway as well as bringing in much needed funds required to guarantee the lines future.
    Track gauge - 2 ft 3 in (686 mm)

    Tim, I enjoyed this train ride through the Welsh countryside. I love endless luscious green meadows stretching as far the eyesight can reach. A particular joy to my heart is seeing sheep grazing in the fields. I love those animals.
    This is a very nostalgic video and I have devoured it. Thank you for an excellent production of yours. God bless you!!

      Hi, Wales is a lovely country, the scenery isn't Swiss style dramatic, it is simply very pretty with lush green countryside, ancient trees, dry stone walls and attractive villages. The sheep are an integral part of the landscape, it wouldn't be Wales without them. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim.

      Hello Jim, people are so spoiled for choice when they visit Wales to ride the various heritage railways, it's often not possible to see them all, hopefully I will return this year to cover some of those I missed. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim.

    Beautiful countryside. Imagine when this was the principal means of getting goods and people around at speed, faster than horse and buggy. So much has changed, it's good to see this still operating.

      @@Timsvideochannel1 I’ve been very lucky! When I took my wife, on her first trip to Wales in1969, on the Festiniog Railway she fell in love with railways and that’s been something of a bonus.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@peterhunt2723You are lucky, unfortunately my wife doesn't share my love of railways, she is a regular user of our local mainline trains and due to never ending industrial action and staff shortages she arrives late or not at all on about a half of her journeys, hence she doesn't regard train travel as anything other than an unpleasant experienced that has to be endured when she visits our daughter or her elderly Mum. I am lucky in that she's happy for me to go off on my own on rail based holidays and day trips to heritage lines, although she does enjoy a cream tea in the Pullman carriage on Both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways. Take care and season’s greetings. Tim.

    The *Dinky Line" of narrow guage UK.
    @ 2:30 I thought I could hear Ringo's narration willing the miniature tank engine up the hill.
    There must be possibilities for bolstering the finances of set-ups like this by undertaking regular, commercial "Lite" services e. g. getting farm produce to Farm Shops in the towns, parcel delivery, school run and outings, photography, astrononomy, walkers clubs meets.. just "Borrow" some of the exploit ideas of bigger cousins round the UK ?

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, a voice could be heard at 2:30, it wasn't Ringo on this occasion, just the driver and fireman chatting. This railway was the first railway in the world to operate as a volunteer run heritage line and in many ways it leads the way when it comes to creating additional income on top of the fare box, with events such as this one commemorating the the railway's links with the Rev. W. Awdry's series of children's railway books featuring Thomas the Tank Engine and friends. The train shown on the viaduct was a photographic charter and some of the small halts are for walkers. The railway is not a year round operation and the population along the line is tiny, not enough to support school trains, although it's a nice idea.

    The funds won't roll in by themselves. The steam engines' future on the railway will become very bleak, if many enthusiasts don't learn to stop letting a shower of rain put them off. Without the enthusiasts turning up in a crowd, this special event might come to a stop altogether. The Tallyllyn Railway is a wonder to behold, home of one of the Great Little Trains of Wales. How many of the Great Little Trains of Wales have had a visit from you?

    Greetings from Tennessee. You have a good eye and the potential to make some really good videos, but you really need to upgrade your cameras. I love watching narrow gauge and smaller railway videos. Perhaps you should try full length, unedited, videos. Keep up the good work.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, nice to hear from Tennessee. This video was filmed using a GoPro 11 and a Sony FDR-AX53 Handycam, both reasonably good cameras without too much faff, I also use a GoPro 12. I wouldn't get away with mounting anything bigger than a Gopro on the front of a train and when I went to upgrade my Sony FDR-AX53 Handycam I couldn't find anything to beat it without loosing much of the point and shoot ability of the camera, so I bought another one. I usually only get one chance to capture the moment, so fiddling around with settings isn't an option. If there were better similar cameras around I would consider them. There is a noticeable drop in quality between the video I upload and the same video watched on TH-cam. I welcome advice and I've tried DJI, Cannon and other cameras, if you know of cameras that are better than GoPro or Sony please let me know the make and model. Cheers. Tim.

      At one time the railway extended a little further to reach the slate quarries it was originally built to serve, there was no inland connection with the national network just the exchange sidings at Tywyn Wharf.
