Driver's Eye View - South Devon Railway (England) - Buckfastleigh to Totnes Riverside

- No holiday in the West Country would be complete without a visit to the South Devon Railway, where a little bit of Devon’s history has been captured and beautifully presented for us all to enjoy. It’s lovely to read books and see pictures of quaint little tank engines steaming through glorious countryside with a short rake of chocolate and cream carriages, the South Devon Railway takes those nostalgic images and brings them to life with pretty stations, gleaming locomotives, traditional signals, buildings and water towers all bearing that distinct Great Western Railway appearance.
The friendly team at the railway go the extra mile to make sure your visit is a memorable one for all the right reasons, with a café, miniature railway, museum and engine shed at Buckfastleigh, along the way our train stops briefly at Staverton, a perfect recreation of a GWR wayside station, finally we steam into Totnes Riverside station for the Totnes rare breeds farm, the town and mainline station.
Take time out from your busy day to enjoy the Devon countryside and River Dart from a point of view passengers rarely see.
The railway is a standard gauge line, (1,435 mm - 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible from the A38 Devon Expressway or by main-line GWR trains from London and the West Country, regular CrossCountry trains from the North and Midlands also serve Totnes.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers of the South Devon Railway for their kind assistance in making this video.
Thanks so much for the lovely ride! What fun.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
The signal box was well worth making the trip to see!
It's nice to be able see inside the signal box, I've visited the one at Totnes on a previous occasion, but I've yet to see inside the one at Buckfastleigh, maybe next time. Now I've got another reason to visit again 😊.
An absolutely superb video of a superbly preserved railway. Loved it!
Hi, we are lucky in the UK to have so many willing volunteers who work hard to give us the wonderful heritage railways we can all enjoy today. We owe our thanks to the South Devon Railway for making this video possible, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Tim, what a loverly.journey. Excellent! Thanks for the chance to ride along, too
Hi Peter, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.
Thank you Tim for a lovely ride through beautiful Devon countryside accompanying the River Dart towards Totnes. Had some lovely holidays further along this lovely river where it widens at Dittisham, upstream from Dartmouth as a young lad while motorcycling down from Coventry during the lmid to late sixties which has brought back many lovely memories of this deilightful area.
Thank you, it's nice to know this video reminded you of past holidays and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
One feels the groans, grunts, squeaks, pants and the huffing and puffing of the loco, almost feel like it's a living being made out of steel, brass and copper amongst other things and the landscape is soft on the eyes..... a pleasant and refreshing journey. Thank you for the upload 👍
Hi, your description of the locomotive is spot on and the scenery is lovely, especially along the riverside. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim.

Lovely video, thank you. It brings back memories of my days studying at nearby Dartington College of Arts in the mid 1990s. I could often hear the whistle of the train from my halls of residence on campus. Great stuff!
That's a lovely place to study Art, Totnes is a rare town these days, it still has independent shops, a genuine green grocer and an old fashioned butcher. I'm glad the video bought back memories from your time at Dartington College of Arts, I hope they were good memories.
Sometimes they would of had a pannier tank that was on tour owned by Tysley
@@steamfandan9682 It's usually a pannier tank at the head of the train when I've visited in the past, at the beginning of this video pannier tanks are show in three different liveries - th-cam.com/video/8HmBfo5LfYk/w-d-xo.html
Remember my first visit they had a J94 (one of the former Longmoor Military Railway J94 as well)
@@steamfandan9682 Was that No. 68011 "Errol Lonsdale"?, another J94 made it onto my local railway - "the Watercress Line" where it was converted to a side tank locomotive and painted to look like "Thomas the Tank Engine".
Fantastic video and the soundtrack is music to the ears! Cheers from Australia.
Hi Jim, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.
Excellent - 4k as well!
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Tim, thanks for putting this up. Lovely ride.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Fantastic quality video. I took a trip on the railway just a few weeks ago and it was a great ride.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. You must have been there around the time this video made. Lovely people running the railway, an awesome GWR locomotive in a beautiful part of the county, as the younger generation would say "what's not to like"
Greetings from Sydney. Thank you. Continue to stay away from the main lines, except for heritage trips. Much appreciated. 🏳🌈
Hello, I'm glad you enjoyed visiting this lovely heritage railway. All the best from a wet and windy UK ☔😊.
...Tom, cómo siempre viajando con ustedes a través de TH-cam,desde Cacheuta Mendoza Argentina...gracias...abrazos...
Hi Tim! Wonderful shots of the driver's cab ride. One has the impression that the railway was there first, and the landscape was added around it. A really very nice route. Wonderful steam sound, I enjoy it. Here's the reward 🍻 Cheers Tim, for your health. Best regards from Hans 🇦🇹
Hello Hans, it does look like a model railway where the track has been laid first with the scenery added later. It's a gentle, relaxing ride, even the locomotive is taking it easy. I'll enjoy that 🍺. Take care. Tim.
I have done that ride 20 years ago and it was a pleasant journey. But this video offers you different sights on that line!
Thank you for posting.

The finest of the finest: a trip with the steam locomotive, great image quality, great sound, great scenery and lots of information during the journey. Best ever I saw!!! Greetings from Germany. 👍👍😊🚂🛤💯🙋♂️
Hello Josef, thank you for your kind comment. The South Devon Railway takes passengers back in time to the 1940's, a time when life was lived at a slower pace and the railways took pride in the appearance of their trains and stations 😊

A familiar journey made even more special by mounting your camera on the loco! Well done!
Thank you Mike, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I can just remember my first visit to the line when it still ran into the terminus station in the town. I have a couple of photos from that trip, unfortunately my old Kodak Instamatic wasn't the best of cameras, but the slightly out of focus pictures still tell a story.
Hello Tim, a pleasant ride in a calming scenery. - Have a nice weekend, Heinz
Hello Heinz, it's the first time I've taken a tour of British heritage railways for several years, I really enjoyed touring the West Country. I'll make the most of my weekend. Take care and stay safe. Tim.
WOW,perfect valve timing on the loco. very rare to see on steam loco vidio,s. im impresssed👍👍
Hi, I'm sure the guys responsible for keeping this locomotive in good order will appreciate your comment 🔧⚙🚂😊.
Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride, this is a lovely railway, so typical of the branch lines that closed in the 1960's. A happy reminder of the way it used to be.
It is always sad when a railway closes, a piece of history gone forever. Your father had an interesting career driving steam, diesel and electric trains. I hope the candidate who wants to reopen the railway is successful. Here in England, people wait in queues of cars next to closed railways that used to speed people into town centers in minutes, journeys that now take much longer on busy roads. The short sighted fools who closed the railways are the ones to blame for the chaos on the roads.
Thanks for the engine ride such beautiful countryside and the river Dart. Lovely GWR locomotive pulls well with a beautiful whistle what more do you need!!😎🚂🚃🚃🚃🍂🍁🎃🇬🇧
Hello Christopher, this is a perfect recreation of the Devon branch lines that once transported milk, coal, perishables, parcels, locals and holidaymakers between the busy main line junction stations and the tranquility of the pretty towns, villages and seaside resorts that make Devon the wonderful destination we love.

Aah, Tim! Back to the style of videos that made you famous! These great-to-watch driver's-eye-view videos of these classic locos! Nice one!
@Neil Forbes now that's what i call a classic vintage train video

@@neilforbes416 yes i have seen his videos very well put together
Hello Neil, I'm still restricted from travelling overseas for a little longer, mainly because it is so hard for organizers to know what tomorrows Covid restrictions will be, hopefully my tour to Germany is still on for January 2021. Travel within the UK is not restricted, so I've been visiting British heritage railways who have been very cooperative in allowing me to place cameras on their locomotives, I have a number of these videos to upload over the next month or so, it's a win win situation, I get to shoot interesting videos and the railways get to show potential customers what they have to offer. The South Devon Railway is one of the friendliest I visit, a warm welcome is always guaranteed. The school holidays will soon be over and most heritage railways will close for a while, although the Santa Express season will soon be with us, it will be Spring before the railways fully open up again, with a series of Galas and special events. I am lucky to live in a country with such a vibrant railway preservation industry, the one good thing that came out of the Beeching cuts.

Hello Keith, we are lucky to have so many wonderful heritage railways in the UK, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.
1:32 A choo choo train. 🚂 It's really pleasant and comforting to listen to. 😃🤗
Do these types of trains commute in winter too?
Lovely scenery throughout; a thoroughly relaxing and delightful ride. Thank you Tim! 🥰💖😊
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the sound of the locomotive and the pleasant scenery. This is a heritage railway run largely by unpaid volunteers with a small number of paid staff. The railway runs for most of the year, including Santa Specials, although there are no trains during the quietest winter months.
I miss this kind of thing so much...
I count myself as being very lucky to be able to enjoy this wonderful railway, I hope you enjoyed taking this virtual ride with me 🙂.
Excellent video!

Hello Bob, it was lovely day, warm and sunny although as you rightly noticed the river was swollen from the previous days rain. It's going to take me a while to recover from the financial impact of Covid, hopefully not too long, then I can start planning my next trip down under. All the best. Tim.

This railway does have the "Wow" factor. Its all credit to the wonderful staff and volunteers who keep it looking so good.
O que mim deixa impressionado, não é só os trem e as estações, são também as paisagem que o Tim filma. Não sei onde o Tim colocou a câmera no trem mais ficou ótima a imagem.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride, I've just looked on the website, it looks as though the next trains will be the "Polar Express Trains" in the run up to Christmas, followed by regular trains at the end of December and the first few days of January.
Need to get back there in the flesh but did I Observe a carriage in the train from the nearby Dartmouth railway
Hi, nothing beats visiting in person and "yes" one of the carriages "Louise" was in the livery of the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway (P&DSR) with the window frames picked in GWR chocolate brown.
Miss you Brittany so much 😢💓.
Oh, that's sad 😢
I understand that the station building is from Powerstock on the Maiden Newton branch line...
Hi, I was writing a forward to the next video due out tomorrow. I looked up the history of Totnes Riverside station in an article on the internet in which it said the station buildings came from Toller on the Bridport Branch. Please click on this link for more information - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totnes_(Riverside)_railway_station The stations at Buckfastleigh and Staverton are original I believe - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckfastleigh_railway_station en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staverton_railway_station If you know something different, or find any further information I'd be interested to hear about it.
@@Timsvideochannel1...Toller Porcorum ( Roman pig market town)was the next station on the line from Maiden Newton to Bridport! I always get them mixed up! Powerstock was called Poorstock but the railway didn't like the town name so changed it!
@@christinaburton9297 Hi, thanks for the extra information. I know Bridport well as a result of family holidays and my parents having a house in Burton Bradstock, I but I didn't really explore inland as I loved the Dorset Coast. I'd like to visit the cafe at the old Bridport station, but due to Covid and other things, I've yet to find it open. Powerstock/Poorstock, I can understand why the railway changed the name 🙂
@@Timsvideochannel1 yes!! I wonder how much of the line can be walked..great to know the station is intact at Bridport. Anything at West Bay? More of your great videos please, regards from a female anorak ( anoraksia???)
@@christinaburton9297 Hi, I slipped up when it came to Bridport station, the cafe I was referring to is actually at West Bay. There are a lot of ladies who enjoy the hobby, some heritage lines such as the Bluebell Railway regularly staff the whole train with ladies, driver's, fireman/woman, guards and ticket collectors, it's got to be good for the hobby. My visit to the West Country was very successful, I have a number of videos to upload as I find time to edit them. Pete Waterman and Micheal Portillo along with a number of other TV personalities have done a lot to improve the image of our hobby 🙂
Hello, I am from Ukraine! Thank you!
Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Best wishes from the UK.
I thought this was the Dart Valley Railway, and that the South Devon Railway was the Paignton - Kingswear line. Have I been under a misapprehension for the last half-century(!), or was there a name change at some time?
It was the Dart Valley Railway when I first visited a long time ago so I looked it up on the internet, I have copied and pasted the answer I believe to be correct -
Just to clear things up, the Dart Valley Railway was what is now called the South Devon Railway. The Dart Valley Light Railway PLC used to run both this line and the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway. In 1992, the South Devon Railway Trust took over what was called the Dart Valley Railway and it was renamed as a consequence. The Dart Valley Railway PLC (as it is now known) still operates the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.
Does the train carry a step ladder for anyone who gets on / off at Nappers?! It seems to be closed when I visited - padlocked, etc. They ought to make it like Kelling Heath Park Station on the NNR.
Hi, I believe the train does carry a step ladder, but it is most likely for emergencies where passengers might be required to leave the train where there is no platform. Napper's Halt looked to be out of use when we passed through. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelling_Heath_Park_railway_station Kelling Heath station does have the benefit of a raised platform, I'm guessing you are suggesting the same solution for Napper's Halt.
Yes indeed, though it may have to be moved away from the signal perhaps so it's not in station limits. Thank you for reply as always! C
What year did Staverton bridge change it's name to just Staverton?
I last went in 1974 and it hadn't changed then...
I searched the internet - www.alamy.com/stock-photo/staverton-bridge.html?sortBy=relevant I can find photos of the station with both names, but no date. My own photos taken in the early eighties show "Staverton Bridge". I hope somebody who knows the answer can share it with us.
I just looked through my own photos and found several taken in 2013 showing the station as "Staverton".
@@Timsvideochannel1 Ah ok, thanks. I expect somebody will know. I'm not desperate, I was just surprised to see that the name had changed. Mind you, I swear it was called the 'Dart valley railway' when I travelled on it. Maybe they have had a change?
@@xenon53827 It was called the Dart Valley Railway when I first travelled on it just after it reopened. At one time the Dart Valley Railway and the Dartmouth Steam Railway were owned by the same company - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dartmouth_Steam_Railway I believe the name was changed from Dart Valley Railway to South Devon Railway to avoid confusion with the nearby Dartmouth Steam Railway. From the photos I've seen and the articles I've read I would guess the name change took place around 2010.
Fun fact: There are no fewer than 6 Cabbage Palms hidden along this section ;)
First I had to find out what one looked like ://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/61447/cordyline-australis-torbay-dazzler-(v)/details
I saw 3 small plants on the right hand side at the far end of Totnes station where the locomotive is standing ready to run round its train and several larger palms at the back of the platform - am I close?
I’ve been here.
I hope you enjoyed your visit as much as I enjoyed mine 😊.

Sorry but that don't count as a drivers eye view this the view from the smoke box door or buffer beam but the height would sergest smoke box still a cracking video keep it up
Hi, it would take a brave driver to sit on the handrail of the smoke-box door, but I have to play along with the TH-cam algorithm, it likes "Driver's Eye View" or "Cab-ride" whereas it would ignore "Forward View". I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride 🙂
Bradley, you can see the camera on the handrail in Tim’s lineside shots during the runround at Totnes. Just as you can see Tim taking these shots - having an Alfred Hitchcock moment?
I was really enjoying this video when an ugly add came and spoilt it !
Hi, I try to reduce the ads, but if I go too far TH-cam stops recommending my videos. If you watch TH-cam a lot, it’s worth paying to watch Ad free. I do sympathise with you, Ads are a pain, but the revenue I receive does help pay for my travelling, without which I would not be able shoot many of my videos.
