    As others indicated, this aria is not really suited for the lyric voice of Freni… but she handles it as well as she possibly can, and she still sounds quite good.

    Not really the vocal quality needed for this aria, imo. She has to really reach for some of the notes

    Freni managed her voice very carefully across a quite long career. She understood that the heavier roles needed to wait and that she had to be careful when taking them on. As others note this aria is usually seen as one for heavier spintos but she has the technique to allow her to be effective. I heard her many times between 1968 and her last was new role [Tatiana in Onegin] at around the same time as this was recorded. The voice stayed remarkably the same and she was still able to create the sound of a young woman in love in Onegin's first act. What she had added was the depth of voice, carefully used, to also bring the dignity of the third act woman of means and nobility to her interpretation. A very great artist.

    How did I miss this??!! Not since Ponselles acoustic recording have i heard this aria delivered with such dramatic precision. Those chest notes! And the tempo of the caballeta is perfect. PERFECT!! I would be throwing roses on the stage!

    This aria is just not for freni, and the cabaletta is murderous. One can tell she finds it a strain, as many singers have, but she gives it her all, and is to be admired for that. A great artist.

    Freni is a wonderful artist, and this role is too heavy for her, but there are moments of great beauty.

    In the second half of the Sixties, I was madly in love with Mirella Freni, whom I saw and heard live many times at the Met in New York, but also in other venues as far-flung as Philadelphia, Cleveland, Paris, Milan, and Salzburg. Absurdly Nineteenth-Century Romantic though it may sound, I would go so far as to say that she had something to do with my decision, back in 1980, to come live in Italy, where I still reside today. A video such as this reminds me why she fascinated me so much.

    I don’t think that the weight or the fioratura of this aria are issues per se. Lighter sopranos like Anna Moffo have sung this aria with success, and Freni was a hit in several bel canto operas - Puritani, Beatrice di Tenda, L’elisir, Figlia di reggimento. I think the aria just lies awkwardly in her voice. With that being said, she is clearly using intelligence to survive.

    J'adore Mirella Freni et j'ai beaucoup d'admiration pour son art ! Mais il faut être honnête ,et dans cet air d'Ernani ,elle est complètement dépassée ,c'est très cruel pour elle ,car c'est une merveilleuse artiste .Ce rôle n'est absolument pas pour elle ,car il lui manque la technique d'agilité belcantiste .Or Freni a étudié une technique orientée sur le Vérisme ,et dans le répertoire Veriste elle était souveraine !

    Einstein amava molto la musica . E suonava , non ricordo che strumento, ma dicono che fosse bravo. Scrisse : ascoltate la musica , suonatela ma non parlatene troppo. Non sono le esatte parole ma il senso è quello

    I'm impressed she did as well as she did. This is really to dramatic for her more lyrical voice--but still ... glad to hear her try it.

    Right after the run of performances, she declared she would never sing the role again. She should have never sung it anyway. Not that she is bad, it's just too much effort and it shows.

      Well, don't forget that at the time of this recording she was 47, and that shows. Still, she's my favourite soprano no matter what.

      @@MrStpendouslvforjo Well, you're right, of course. And yet... I thought about two persons of the same age. One is an office pencil pusher and the other is an athlete , a track and field runner. Will they look and feel the same? In that clip Freni sings like she's been exhausted, like she was running marathon just a day before. I read this happens to singers like it does to anyone.

      @@Barabanych That's because the role is too heavy for her, besides it being an early Verdi soprano role, which means that there are devilish cabalettas with a good amount of coloratura and we all know that agility wasn't Freni's forte. It has nothing to do with her age. An operatic soprano at 47 should be singing perfectly. Just listen to Birgit Nilsson killing it as Brunhilde and Isolde in her mid 50's.
      Even Freni, a couple of years later (1989) would be singing a very good Adriana Lecouvreur.

      I was noticing that. Very sloppy coloratura. And strained at the top. At least here, which surprises me. Such a beautiful voice, but best in Verismo.

    Ottima Freni ma purtroppo l'Agilità non è corretta, non è accettabile : mancano molte Note nelle Scale ascendenti, inoltre le manca il Volume, la Potenza del Soprano più Spinto (o Drammatico che dir si voglia, del tipo CERQUETTI , o CABALLE') etc. !Non è il Ruolo ideale per la Signora FRENI, per altro Artista eccelsa !!
    La stessa FRENI , al termine della Recita, dichiarò che non avrebbe MAI PIU' CANTATO il RUOLO di ELVIRA , perche' si era trovata NON A SUO AGIO (ma scusate, non se ne era accorta durante le Prove ?!?) !!
    Non si capisce perchè abbia accettato di cantarlo : la Carriera si fà anche dicendo dei bellissimi NO .

      ASSOCIAZIONE CULTURALE, agilita' non corretta non fa l'ottima prestazione. Non e' quindi ottima e come espressione e' piu' vicino ad una cuoca paesana che non ad una antica contessa spagnola.

      È vero, non la.cantò più! Non.si sentiva sicura e in recita era visibilmente nervosa. Capita, è insidiosissima questa parte. La freni fu sempre.molto accorta nella.scelta del.repertorio.

      Non trovo che in questa aria dell Ernan, Mirella Freni non abbia voce. Io la trovo deliziosa in un opera di difficile interpretazione. Durante le prove la Signora Freni si sarà certo accorta che forse l opera richiedeva impegno ancora più gravoso. Un grande artista non si arrende di fronte alle difficoltà.

    Ho avuto curiosità di ascoltarla, oggi. Tanto di cappello alla sua lunga carriera, nessuna emozione. Molti aggiustamenti nella sillabazione. Certo anche la caballe' aggiustava e spesso non pronunciava. Ma l'emozione arrivava e arriva ancora. La freni, per carità, brava. Ma emozioni...pochine.

      Sono in totale disaccordo. A partire dagli Anni Sessanta, ho visto e sentito Mirella Freni tante volte alla Metropolitan Opera, al Teatro alla Scala, al Festival di Salisburgo, a Parigi e in altri contesti ancora. Le sue interpretazioni sono sempre state capaci di farmi commuovere (e a volte, persino, di farmi piangere).

      Caro David Steven tabbat, siamo tutti amanti di qualcosa imponderabile e profondo che ci accomuna e ci innamora. Se la freni per Lei è superba ed emozionante è una cosa importante e bella. Vuol dire che siete sintonizzati su un canale emotivi comune. E, in ogni caso, ogni artista è degno del massimo rispetto. Io Le ho già espresso il mio pensiero, e in altre artiste trovo una fonte di emozioni molti più forti e confacenti alla mia sensibilità. Ciò non toglie nulla alla brava e grande Freni, cui sono sinceramente affezionato e grato. Buona giornata

      ​@@sandro7799- Caro Sandro Bruno, Le confiderò una cosa che con l'opera lirica c'entra relativamente poco. Se dovessi dirLe il nome del/della cantante che ha significato di più per me nell'arco dei miei sette decenni quaggiù, sceglierei il baritono francese Gérard Souzay, il sommo interprete (secondo me) delle mélodies françaises di Fauré, Duparc, Gounod, Debussy, Poulenc e bella compagnia. E' stato per me un amico difficile (ma ne è valsa la pena).

    No es rol para Mirella Freni. Elvira requiere de otra potencia, color y tesitura. Se la ve y escucha incómoda en el rol.

      Yo creo que tú la cantarlas mejor verdad está ópera es una de las primeras del Verismo Mirella siempre supo que papeles abordar eso habla de su longevidad en el escenario el cuidado de su voz así que no digas sandeces mejor callar

    Forse questo ruolo era troppo pesante per lei ma con il suo talento e la sua maestria secondo me poteva permettersi di tutto ....la sua voce era come un trapano ....la distinguevi e superava tutti ❤

      Non era un repertorio adatto a lei, alla sua voce, alla sua tecnica, al suo stile. In Verdi è molto buona nel Boccanegra e solo parzialmente nell’Otello. Ma negli altri ruoli verdiani che si è ostinata a cantare, non regge minimamente il confronto con altre interpreti.
      Perché, invece di Ernani, alla Scala non le hanno chiesto di cantare l’Onegin, per esempio, in cui proprio in quegli anni stava diventando interprete di riferimento? O magari la Manon Lescaut di Puccini?
      🤷‍♂️

    Have watched Mirella performance in opera twice, for the first in Rossini’s Cinderella, the second in Bohemia. She’s definitely of that prima donnas circle who’s fascinating voice be forever .
