- 2014 is a transitional period for Bedford. The construction, the demolition and the change that will come with it will change the town forever. Here we capture the towns look in early 2014.

Born, raised and schooled in Bedford. Remember Harrison & Rowley in Foster Hill Road? That was my dad's business until 1968 when we left for Cape Town. I am now retired and live in Tenerife. Seeing this film actually makes me feel depressed how run down it has become and I could never imagine returning !.
Dassie Rabbit it is sad but I still love unfortunately those elected to run it have ruined the town and Bedford will probably become one big council estate with jobs being in Luton and shopping and entertainment going to Milton Keynes.

I was born and raised in Bedford and left in 1979 to live in Wales. I now live in Somerset which is a beautiful county but this video makes me realise that I still miss Bedford and will visit again soon. Thank you.

I moved to Kempston this year after living in Shefford, 10 miles down the road. Bedford seems to be a town of two halves, but it has a vibrant feel, and some parts are very historic and attractive. If you want boring, move to Shefford.

Grand effort Richard. I used to be in Bedford every week servicing blocks of flats. Love it by . walk east then look back at the road bridge. I first saw the town when I was about 6 years old and we travelled from Leagrave to Raunds to stay with my aunt. this journey took all day. My word, how things have changed

Today its a ghost town. Most of the shops have gone then the council decided to depend a fortune on the high Street & around pigeon Square to no effect. Nothing to go there for, as everything's in retail parks.

When the bus station is complete I will do another walkaround.. visit some new areas... I will take note to take off the music next time. Although in this case it was done to drown out the wind as my camera picks up any drafts and its rather annoying.

Largely the town centre is a ghost town now. After Covid everyone stayed at home and shopped online because they were forced to stay home. The trend stayed with people. Therefore most of the town is now boarded up window front, lots of closed stores. We lost M&S, Debenhams, most of the pubs.. all thats left is the Harpur centre, Specsavers, CEX, Boots and a few pound shops.

I live in Bedford Richard, I agree with you, on line shopping has had a huge impact for years, however, the exorbitant rates charged to businesses by the Borough Council is what is killing off the local shops.

@@devally2432 Oh I know. They want a kings ransom with zero footfall to fall back on. Bedford needs a pretty scenery before it needs shops, it all looks very 1970's and neglected and folk prefer to shop by car or by online means these days. My friend ran Goldings until it closed he said there just isn't the demand in the 2020's for a local shop. Maybe for services, but not for items.
You lost me for a while until you turned a corner and that big cedar tree popped into view. Unless i'm mistaken that's the one at the top of church lane and sat in the front of a great old farmhouse until the dozers moved in early 70's ?

I would say heavy congestion of traffic, lack of investment and that Milton Keynes is close enough to make it worse in the future. Considering that its a very nice place if you like lakes, parks, rivers and character. The worst part though is that a lot of people now live in Bedford that don't respect it. It shows sometimes.

I was born in Bedford in 1951 in st johns my family ancestors the Horns and Howes have been since1600 it was a place of character and characters all gone now bin destroyed in name of modernity looks like the same as any other town now I call them Tesco towns all the same streets and shops
i left the uk a decade ago to live in Kenya, Rome, Qatar, Nepal, Morocco and now Dubai, but I have so many deep nostalgic fond memories of Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Dunstable etc. It is a lovely video and will grow more valuable with the passage of time. One thing you missed though was the links to John Bunyan! A collosal figure in history and literature! Also Bedford has a world class museum; so I am surprised you missed it out of the video!

This will be a great watch in ten years or so, even in 6 there has been several changes, though very few for the better. I Often fall down rabbit holes in TH-cam of old footage/pictures of old Bedford. Lot of effort here though, curious to know if you used a gimble/what camera. Very still 👍
I've still got the camera, never upgraded to 4k yet. Its a Panasonic HC-X800 which I bought about a year after its release. I was going to do another video about 18 months ago and put it off due to never getting the weather I wanted, now i'm stuck in tier 4. At the time in 2014 I never had a wind muffler hence the music and some of my standing positions was where the wind was blocked. I caught the bus to town and walked all the way home using the camera, hence why the Kempston side was not shown as I live on the Goldington side. I will do another update maybe this summer depending on covid19 circumstances changing. Thanks for looking. edit, this video was filmed in 50fps but downgraded to 30fps because of youtubes feature limitations at the time. The next one will be at least 1080p at 50fps which means it will be much smoother.

What a brilliant video Richard you put a lot of work and effort into this, I was watch with interest to see if you captured any of the two Wetherspoon pubs in Bedford and you did the first time at 1.41, but not the one in the High Street, another interesting bit for me was at 29.18 where you filmed a Johnsons coach from Henley in Arden which is sort of from my area. regards Mike.

Remember a place called Middlesex one step away from being Eastern Milton Keynes.Last step close the the council.No Police Station in Bedford,College joined up with others,local paper closed,Hospital joined up with Luton.Villages to be built East of Milton Keynes filling in the gap..Its in the post code MK42.Well done how to destroy a nice town.
Think 3.33 explains the place Swan Hotel on one side of the river and a concrete hotel on the other me im staying just a bit longer wobbling but they do say the dual carriageway all the way to Cambridge will be finished by 2023 then Cambridge will be half a hour away and on you should be able to get a train to oxford in 2019
