Hi.. I am interested in doing something similar. I agree that the MLtoys products are expensive. Are the motors 550, did you use the original gear box?

550 23000 RPM, Aliexpress. I added cooling fins, and later, active cooling (via some 90s GPU cooler fans and ductwork from PVC pipes - temp controller rarely sees the motors hit 50 degrees (C).
I did buy the hardened steel primary gears and 23 tooth driver gears from MLToys - $120 CAD shipped to my door, easily the single most expensive part after a brand new 850 CCA Costco car battery - and modified the gearbox for them to fit. They work well. The motors used to last a season before they burned out (frequent use of car, 2-3 times a week) but we've been using it less this summer and with the active cooling they're holding up.
This will be the last year I use them, we have a 48v go kart with real hydraulic brakes for his 6th birthday next season ;) I'll fit brand new motors in this Mustang and sell it - it's a blast to drive, and it can be drifted (kiddo figured that out when he was 4 ;) ) without even engaging the 18v boost circuit :D

So I could just buy the steel gear to work in the stock gear box? I have the Suzuki KFX. Would get the cool fins and add temperature sensor and small PC fan. I am wondering if motors can manage two 20v drill batteries.
