  • UPDATE: I can state emphatically: don't do it. Don't modify your power wheels, you are just wasting your money. As soon as you fix one problem, another will pop up. If you enjoy tinkering with things and have an unlimited budget to blow on it, then by all means go for it. It's fun to modify stuff and "make it better" but if that is not you, learn from my experience. You are just playing the "wack a mole" game.
    FULL REVIEW and experience below, but MANY people have asked me "what are the alternatives?"
    We ended up buying a Rosso. www.rossomotors.com/
    It has it's own issues, but they are all minor that just need some tweaking and training. For $600 you get a REAL electric ATV that has 3 speeds (set by key) with the fastest being almost 20mph.
    Razor also has one. If I had to do it all over again, I'd never upgrade a power wheel, I'd just spend my money on something engineered right from the start.
    Note: I am in NO WAY associated with ROSSO or RAZOR other than just being a customer. So you can spend $300 with MLToys on a system that will only go 6mph and eventually fail (it'sll break other parts) or just spend the money and get a real ATV engineered to go fast from the start. In fact if I add what I spent at MLToys to the cost of the original ATV it's about the same. So why eff with MLToys stuff?
    -----
    I bought a ML Toys Stage IV gearbox set for my boys ATV and what was supposed to be 20 minutes work, turned out to be 6 weeks of pain. In the end they work, but you can buy the parts yourself for much less (about $100 less).
    The motor is Amazon ASIN B001SETT0Y
    The pinion 20 tooth is ASIN B004PZLHRQ
    You will need to search the internet for a 18,19, 20 tooth gearbox.
    I found this site: kidcarsandparts.com, not the easiest site to use & I have no experience with them, nor am I recommending thing. You can use google as well as I can. :-)
    I think the MLToys "race grease" is just white lithium grease.
    UPDATE: The last gearbox they sent did work after I cleaned it all out and reinstalled everything.
    Recapping their emails. On 7/7/16 they sent this:
    Watched the videos. They're pretty rudely worded towards us. The reality is that there's absolutely nothing wrong here.... please pull those videos which paint our product in a bad light that just will spread misinformation to others. Thanks, Michael, MLToys
    And then also on 7/7/16:
    We're asking you to remove it as a courtesy to what you overlooked. No harm was done and the product is not defective. Michael
    On 7/8/16 they sent this:
    After checking the things we suggested here you can try swapping that motor to the other side and testing the wiring with your stock motors. We'll figure this out. Michael, MLToys
    On 7/11/16 they sent:
    The shaft that the steel gear (first gear) spins on is sanded down in house for the bearing to clear. Sounds like the very bottom of yours needs a little more sanding. When you tighten down the screws it is binding up the bearing which can lock the gearcase or make it spin slower and loud......
    Then on 7/12 they sent:
    The gearbox housings are made by Mattel... don't think we've ever seen a defect before. Will get one on the way today as well as a second gear and some grease. Michael, MLToys
    7/12/16 they said
    You need to stop being so rude to us. No one here has ever ignored you. To the contrary we had several meetings reviewing your problems and have spent a ton of time emailing with you. We get that you're frustrated that there's something wrong with your setup and we also agree that it's not your fault. My employees are fed up with your attitude and want me to just recall the system and refund you. My goal is to get you running with the upgraded system you were looking for. You're making it so much harder to do though.
    Then on 7/18/16 we got this:
    Last month Power Wheels had mislabeled the packages that our gearboxes came in and you may have gotten a 15-17 which would explain the tight fit.
    MY POINT IS: on 7/18/16 they said they knew they had "mislabeled" gear boxes LAST MONTH, then why did they have me swapping sides, sanding axles and telling nothing was wrong between 7/6 and 7/18? And when they sent me a "new" gearbox on 7/12/16 then why did they send me the exact same gearbox that has the same problem that they already knew about? And why didn't they clean up any of these gearboxes before they sent them to me? Why should I be the one to do all their work for them? Isn't that what I paid my money for?

    I have nothing good to say about ML Toys at all. I spent well over a few hundred dollars on the Stage IV boxes & motors. Dropped them in a 24v jeep that I built for my son & within a week stripped out on the right side. They tried saying it was from going from reverse to drive when i set it up with no reverse. They wouldn't give me a new gear & only offered a 10% discount towards purchasing a new 1. I went to a stock plastic 7r 1st gear with banebot motors have had no problems since. In conclusion this company doesn't stand behind their products & their customer support sucks...f you like to throw away money this company will gladly take it!

      I used their gear and motor since I already paid for them. As for the ATV we just junked it. It kept breaking gears. All we were doing was playing wack a mole. As soon as you fix one thing, something else breaks. We ended up buying a Rossi ATV for $600. Runs 4x as fast as this and doesn't have the problems this did. (The Rossi has it's own short comings but they are minor compared to this mess.)

    Customer service is the biggest indicator that reflects how reliable the company products are, and how interested the company in improving their products, apparently this company don't care much about their customers, and they failed to provide technical details and information about products they sell. they should test every part they sell and give instructions from A to Z on how to assemble these things, and not let the customer struggling trying to assemble defective parts and do all the guessing work. Another thing, good companies analyze every customer's complaint and try to address the issue to uncover any defects or improve their customer satisfaction. This is why made in JAPAN is always far superior than any other product made anywhere else on this earth. Don't waste your time and money on those who don't value you as a customer and treat you like an annoyance.

      There are people on ebay selling the metal gears. I have part numbers for the other items on Amazon in the long description for the video. But I do want to warn you, even after you fix all of these issues the gear boxes will ultimately fail. Once you get the 1st gear and motor solved then it'll be the 2nd gear that strips teeth. Eventually you will find no matter what you do, they will fail everytime because the gear box is just plastic and it will deflect and deform under strain and cause the gears to lose proper engagement and then be on the tips of the teeth, not the roots. As soon as that happens they strip. Also the gears will grind INTO the gearbox at the axles. Because the gears are helical cut, they put longitudinal loading (perpendicular to the gear) on the case and it just gets eaten up.
      I ended up buying www.rossomotors.com/ for $500 and got a complete ready to go electric ATV that will go up to 20mph.

      @@stickman-1 Awesome! Thank you so much. I was trying to decide if I wanted to put any more money into our Dune Racers. I've already upgraded all the wheels to lawn tractor wheels. • @stickman-1

      The metal gear and motor uses a different position. If you look at your case you'll see notations for the different locations. The problem is you cant just move a hole. :-) So you have to get a different case if yours does not have the correct position. The entire thing is engineered pretty hokey in my opinion from the manuf. But it's mass produced for the LCD, so you get what you get.

      I recommend not wasting money trying to upgrade these toys. As soon as you get the metal first gear, then you'll have problems with the 2nd gear and if you get that resolved then the case just "melts" from the heat generated. We ended up buying a Rossi for $600. They are a bit higher price now and they are not perfect, but it's way better money spent IMHO.

    Yes, ML Toys my child is riding the toy and loving it, no thanks to you. It was my work and my investigation that found and ultimately solved the problem.
    But further to the point, you never listened to me the first time I contacted you. You brushed me off claiming "it's normal." I have a background in mechanics, especially motors and power transmission and I know for sure it was not normal. Since you brushed me off, I made the videos FOR YOU, and no one else's consumption. I put them on youtube because it was the best way I know to quickly transmit video information. I thought once you saw the videos you would apologize and get me the correct parts and I'd pull the videos since there was no need for them. But instead you doubled down on your pathetic "customer service." Meaning you sent me more of the problem gear boxes, filled with the crappy factory grease which I had to clean and then again when they didn't solve the problem you admit you knew of the problem weeks before and yet you still sent me the bad gear box and you never apologized? And then when you finally did send the corrected box, again it was full of the crappy grease that I again had to clean. All the time you are crying over "rude" emails/videos. If you can't take valid (and ultimately proven true) criticism, then I suggest you get into another line of work because when you screw people over, you are going to get called on the carpet for it.

      Glad to hear your child has been getting to use the car happily. Despite all of our differences that has been the end goal. As a result of our experience with you we had revamped our customer service and tech support policies. Today if a customer were to have an issue like this they would be given the option of being sent replacement parts to rebuild themselves (fastest way to get it fixed if the customer is sure they know what's wrong and how to repair) or to send the kit back for rebuild/replacement (best way we can insure a proper repair is done). I understand that your experience was not that great and you'll not likely purchase from us again. But we are all human and as MLToys grows we are always trying to work towards making the modifying experience easier and more fun.

      I definitely would not have "cleaned the grease out"... its not the space shuttle... just drop in your gears.. add plenty of the good grease and go with it. Its not high pressure like a vehicle wheel bearing. It would have been fine. But yeah, incompatible gear boxes is just unacceptable.

    I'm about to order a whole big kit from them. But now I'm a bit concerned. I understand that sometimes customers can make goofy mistakes, and this can get frustrating and expensive for the companies involved. But it seems to me that the gentleman was pretty direct and clear in what the issue was, even providing a video to help explain. Perhaps he might have been "rude" in his initial communications; but one might understand his frustration after spending premium prices (and they are premium, since he listed the base prices from other sources). But we're willing to spend the premium price if the company is doing the legwork for us and providing a method to drop in and go. Otherwise, it's worth considering going elsewhere. I hope the company has learned from this; if so, Iook forward to being a loyal customer. Regardless, I'm grateful for this video, and hope more customers from all kinds of companies will also do the same.

    I Am having a problem with these people at MLToys not even responding to my e-mails. I did not see your video before I ordered and now I really pissed. I ordered the 18 volt battery combo and a LED gas gauge and few lights and light module and they have been sitting on my money for 10 days. They responded twice to tell me they don't guarantee shipping or processing time. This is bullshit since they charge you for shipping and it's a lot. I was arguing that you can order a part and have overnight shipping and they can just sit on the order forever and then ship it out. So why pay the different amount for overnight. The fact you can't call them is bullshit. The fact they state on their invoice to not e-mail them because it slows them down is bullshit. Now that I have reached out to them it makes me feel like they have just thrown my order on a stack over there and have not even moved on it. I even wonder if they have the items I ordered in stock or they order them with your money and and then ship them out. 1 to 3 days turn around and processing time is acceptable weeks isn't!!!!! my kids X-maw is '"F" up because of these guys. I ordered with plenty of time.

      I'm sorry but I don't understand. When you say "what I did" what are you referring to? After I got it all working w/in a few weeks the batteries were burned up from the excessive draw from the motors. So I bought new bigger batteries. That made it run longer but that generated a lot more heat and that lead to the housing "melting" (no longer strong enough to support the axles for the gears and they no longer meshed properly and then 2nd gear broke.) What I ended up doing is scraping the whole thing and bought a new ATV that had a lot more power from the start. (Rossi brand.)

      Not really. As soon as I got one thing working something else would give out. (Other gears, gear box, switches, etc) I ended up buying a Russo electric ATV and trashing the Powerwheel. I still have the motors, gears, housing ,etc and will see if you want it. The Russo is not perfect, but for the money I invested in the Powerwheel and it's upgrades I could have nearly bought the Russo initially and it'll do 22mph on the highest setting (3 settings.)
      It is not a perfect product and has some shortcomings but it's still working and nothing major. The only caveat is that the Russo is only 28" wide and so if your are on one of the higher speeds its' easy to flip over. So have your kid get really proficient driving before you up the speed.

      @stickman-1 my son is only 1 but I'm one of those dads that likes to build things better. I actually manufacture offroad truck parts for a living. I bought a ride on jeep for my son with the remote so that I can drive him around. My primary current concern is the suspension. It has cheap spring suspension but it's very rigid and doesn't give much travel. Especially with the plastic tires. I want to upgrade the suspension to more of an independent cross kart type. Also, I want to upgrade to a fully variable throttle, instead of the on/off type, and also, I think maybe adding a capacitor in the motor wiring might make the braking less harsh. And finally, I'm considering either brushless motors and planetary gears from drills or converting to golf cart motors with a transfer case for 4x4. What do you think and have you done any of this or have recommendations? I plan to build him a nice electric cross kart one day and eventually convert it to gas.

Second I'm going to save everyone who reads this a lot of trouble...Traxxas Titan 775 motor, in my case Robinson racing 16t, 32p, 5mm pinion gear. $30 motor $11 pinion, ml toys $11 has a fantastic mount adapter for the bigger engine which lines it up perfectly.. . Also for a whopping $1 they sell four female gold-plated bullet connectors... Which allow easy removal of the motors you don't have to solder them every time.

      @johnsteele8073 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stickman-1 Read your comment. You have the wrong size pinion. You must not be familiar with RC cars - its not a manufacturing defect (how could it be? everyone would have the same problem!) if a 17T pinion "binds" and you dont have different mount positions to mount the engine (you might) then you need a 16T pinion or 15T etc. Look at the molding on the case it actually shows you there are several different pinion sizes one case works with. Its a simple problem I believe you failed to comprehend. No offense. If youre not familiar with rc cars and pinions and adjustments you would have no idea. Not your fault. But maybe ask someone.

What I bought was a complete kit! That's what I paid for. It was supposed to be drop in as provided by ML Toys. Pull the old, install the new and go. I got ALL of it from ML Toys. So IF I had the wrong pinion then ML Toys sent the wrong pinion gear. So even if you belief is factual, ML Toys are the ones that screwed up, not me! I quoted directly from their email: on 7/18/16 here is the email they sent me:
      "Last month Power Wheels had mislabeled the packages that our gearboxes came in and you may have gotten a 15-17 which would explain the tight fit."
      Now to the actual facts of the case: ML Toys admitted they sent "defective," aka, "mis-labeled" cases. All the cases I had and what they sent all have the pinion location marked on the case. It's not hard to see. It is not the pinion issue it's the case was wrong.
      Suggestion: Actually watch the video and read my description, before you make a comment on it.

    If you take the stickers off the motors they are the same as trax motors. The only reason you need the metal gear is because the excess heat coming off the motor melts the plastic on the original stock gear. The screw holes for the 775 motors can be bored out a little with a larger drill bit to give the gears some slack. I'm not sure whether or not you need a bearing in the metal gear. Friction maybe, plastic riding against metal. Grease is a wonderful thing. I went to upgraded 550's at eighteen volts. Tried of making repairs on 775 motors and gearboxes at 24 volts. Unfortunately repairs are what you inherit when you modify the riding toys from their stock origin. KidscarsAndParts is a very good company but doesn't have as many of the products that mltoys has. Sorry about your problems. Hang in there Dad. They grow up fast.

    Nope. Not gonna buy from em. I've got a RC car shop local
    If only I could finger the value of the brake resistor. My local E scrap guy would hook all of us up

    Do not buy from them. I bought 2 550 motors. Both of them burned up in less than 1 month.

    I belief your problems are legit and they should have help you with more hospitality but there is no solution in your video and it was unhelpful

    • @stickman-1
      @stickman-1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry you feel it was unhelpful. I'lll try to explain.
      The reasons I made the video are: To inform other about the poor service of ML Toys. To show others who have a similar problem what the ultimate solution is. To give people an alternative to ML Toys. The first one you got. The 2nd one you probably didn't get because you did not experience the problem and the third I don't think you got because you might not have watched it all?
      I"ll recap the solution: The solution is to identify which case you have. If you have the wrong case, the only solution is to get the right case. You might try drilling out the bad case and moving the motor so it has more tolerance against the gear, but because the distance is so short you probably won't have success at that.
      Hope this helps. :-)

    This customer had a very very unusual problem with his setup. It took us 6 weeks to help him determine what the issue was, despite being spoken to rudely from the first email all the way through until the issue was resolved. So far as we know the child is now riding the vehicle happily and we covered all expenses of sending him multiple shipments to get everything running. Oh, the bearings are ABEC 9 rated and have never failed on any vehicle :)

      ML Toys looked like he was telling you what the problem was right off the bat.. And sent a gear case full of old grease that you obviously just stripped off some other power wheel lying around.. Tisk tisk!

      @ML Toys You do know as a company selling products that customer service is an integral part of that? You should take joy in solving customer issues. One shouldn't call a customer out regardless of how rude you think they are, you are there to serve them, and by god, if it takes you 6 weeks to ascertain the issue and resolve it you're doing something terribly wrong. I say this not to drag you over the coals but to inform you that as a potential future customer, looking though youtube to see what to buy, your comment above does nothing to comfort me or win me over.
      This is how you should respond to the video above: It is very regrettable to ML Toys that you had this experience but we thank you for bringing this potential problem to our attention so that we can avoid any potential problems with future customers. Though the issue you faced is incredibly rare future resolutions will be handled in the quickest manner possible. If there is anything at all we can do to further assist you please let us know. Thank you for your business and have a wonderful day.

      They have failed to be PUT ON a vehicle though *:)* How can you say your products "have never failed on a vehicle"? Of course you haven't had any fail, you can't even put them ONTO a vehicle. That's like me bragging I've never crashed a plane, even though I've never flown one. *:)*

      "Being spoken to rudely"... You are a company. You need to understand that when people spend their hard earned money and the products you send them #1 don't work and #2 aren't as advertised then you are going to get some irritation coming your way. It's EVERY companies job to deal with upset customers with their egos in check! That's rule number one in business ML Toys! If you hadn't had the attitude you did with this customer and simply fixed his issue then these videos would not have been posted and numerous (me included) people would still be ordering from your company. I will now NOT order from you guys and I was about to order 2 of the stage IV gear boxes this guy had the issues with! So are you proud that your total lack of business etiquette has led to so many people no longer doing business with your company? You should fire whoever it is that is coming to these videos and STILL sounding arrogant and rude. It's plain ridiculous!

      Holy crap! It took this guy to post a video to get customer service in check. Seems like someone just wants to rake in the cash. They probably just hire anyone who will do the job for what they pay. I really hope the customer service is up to par now. I want to buy from them, but now I'm contemplating

    It's been 4 months now and the customer is still running. There's a reason we put a lifetime warranty on our steel gears. Yes, it took what we also consider an excessive amount of time to determine what was wrong and as a result it has improved our ability to respond to other customers in a much more expeditious manner. It is always our goal first and foremost to make sure that your child gets to enjoy their ride. As this case showed, regardless of how difficult the customer was to work with we will stick it out and give you support on any product you purchase from MLToys til we figure out the cause and best resolution.

    • @zacre101
      @zacre101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hell it should last a lifetime if you can't even USE your product.
      Maybe if your company didn't take shortcuts by half ass production of the product and then knowingly send it to a customer hoping they wouldn't figure it out then you wouldn't have had to "cover expenses of multiple shipments".
      Your comment makes you sound like a immature 5 year old. Who the hell brags about doing the right thing, you didn't go above and beyond, you did the bare minimum by covering the cost. Quit acting like a b*tch and man up to your mistakes.
      Who cares if he's rude?? You shouldn't have sent subpar products to begin with and lied about it being normal.
      I was thinking, mistakes happen, it might be a fluke. But after seeing your comments on here I made up my mind if your too immature to own up to your mistakes by saying something like "we tried but he was rude even the first time we talked" makes me think your too stupid to realize what customer service is.

    • @zacre101
      @zacre101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh and with the "no matter how hard the customer is to deal with" comment, if yall didn't make shitty products, lie to your customers, and brag about doing the bare minimum, I imagine he would've never posted videos. The only reason yall did anything is because he was able to prove he was sent MULTIPLE messed up products.
      Just because your business is in toys for kids, doesn't mean you need to act like one. My 3 year old could run the customer service department.
      "I don't want to play with them, they're mean!"
      "He started it!"
      *gets in trouble* "Well so and so did this!"
      "I didn't do anything, it was his fault."
      Writing these comments just makes me hope your company fails, which if you don't graduate elementary school, chances are it will.

      Oh wow. Glad I stumbled on this video because I was really close to buying some gear boxes for the 775 motors I just ordered. "No matter how hard the customer is to deal with"? Really? I understand you get a lot of customers messing things up themselves in your line of work, but this man bought a premade system that my 3 yr old son could practically install himself. You admitted you have revamped your customer service because of this man...yet you never apologize and basically call him a pain in the ass. Look at how difficult YOU were to deal with. You sent him a defective part and he sent you video of the problem. Any respectable company would have apologized right away and sent him a replacement and a label to return the defective. I will never buy anything from ml toys just because I can tell your customer service sucks. This guy in the video was honestly pretty nice about it...I could sense the frustration, but he never bashed your company or cussed you like I would have. Then you have the audacity to troll his video and brag about your products after you completely screwed him. At least pretend to be sorry. I'll just buy a stock 7r case and a metal gear from elsewhere

    dude I'm sorry but u are dead wrong on this. I'm not trying to be mean but u really need research stuff before u make harmful accusations. Just like any car a differential will cause a wheel to spin freely if it loses traction. your problem wasnt drive train but traction. the heat was a direct result of the motor change and the grease mixing is silly. besides test fit the gears and case and make sire everything is aligned and free and make adjustments as needed. if u cant do simple fabrication and mods then u shouldnt be working on it and leave it to thise who can or buy something new. not trying to be mean but i feel as if a mechanically inclined person wouldn't have had those same issues

    • @--RSL--
      @--RSL-- 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you need to LISTEN to what the whole video is about... He shouldnt need to know simple fabrication, ML toys are advertising DROP IN solutions that do not require it... LISTEN.

    • @stickman-1
      @stickman-1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Note: These vehicles don't have differentials. They are direct drive, one on either side. And as I said, I bought the whole "kit" all the parts from them, ready to go. I have a pretty substantial shop and do a lot of fabrication, but on real cars and real equipment. This was for toys for my kids. The whole point was that I was paying them to save me time.
