Panasonic GH4 meets Fujinon XA55

  • I decided to try my Fujinon XA55 Digipower lens with a Panasonic GH4.
    It worked surprisingly well.
    Everything is shot in UHD, 25p.
    All camera settings is set to default. Standard gamma and color settings.
    Since I couldn't use ND-filters, I had to use shutter speeds around 1/200 in the sunlight.
    The lens is 9,5 - 525 mm f/1:1.7
    With the 2X extender it becomes 19 - 1050 mm f/1:3.4
    And with the 2,3X "crop" factor of the GH4 in UHD-modus, the AOV is the same as a 44 - 2415mm lens on a FF-camera.
    Other equipment used:
    Ronford-Baker tripod legs
    Miller Skyline 70 Head
    Fotodiox B4-MFT adapter
    Music: "Far the Days Come" - by "Letter Box"
    A special thanks to the people at AVIT-systems in Stavanger for beeing a supportive supplier of professional video equipment.

    That is one seriously back-breaking setup! I like the way you can zoom in & out pretty smoothly though. I used a Panasonic G6 paired with a Sigma 150-600mm C lens Nikon fit with a $20 adapter) plus a 2x TC to film Peregrine Falcons from afar. That worked pretty well, giving me the FF equivalent of approx 600mm-2400mm! Of course, it was manual exposure and focus and max aperture was F13 but it gets the job done a lot cheaper.

    The zoom range is like nothing I've ever seen. Is it just me, or does this footage have a 70's BBC documentary kind of look? Why is that?

    • @drumskirun
      @drumskirun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      If you're talking about when you see heat waves and such when he's fully zoomed in, that "look" just comes from the perspective that an extremely long focal length gives you. It's not a perspective we're used to seeing in normal life and in video, usually only in nature documentaries where you have to shoot wildlife from these distances. That's part of what I think gives it that "documentary" look.

    • @DannyPops
      @DannyPops 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      I think old documentaries, especially from the BBC had a sort of style where zooming was a commonly embraced element of cinematography... It's kind of cheesy now but works in to subtly bring you back to old filming styles. Wes Anderson uses this effect a lot.

    • @dazxmedia
      @dazxmedia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      when fully zoomed in there is a lot of atmosphere between the lens and the subject. That super telephoto hazy look is very 70's and 80's. These days cameras are more portable and smaller and can be placed anywhere, giving a variety of perspectives rather than just "zooming in" for a closer look.

    • @alexcheetah79

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I guess its the long zoom. Older documentarys are very often shot with extremely long focal lenghts. Nowadays with small (and comparable cheap) equipment its often possible to be much closer to the action. Also, zooms were a new thing back then and thus the effect was often shown. Today its more about composition with a single focal lenght per shot.
