Very cool method !! I love the concept of the hollow grind and use it on everything that i can... Not to mention how quick you can regrind a primary bevel with the grinder instead of taking forever with a coarse stone ..... Some of the veritas router plane blades have the cutter removable from the shank so it is easy to grind on a bench grinder , but for the smaller ones that dont have a removable cutter , this method is great !!!

Thanks for the tip. Do you know a way to sharpen a spearpoint blade? The one I have needs a complete regrind. I may eventually replace it but I would rather not give up on it just yet.

You could also clamp the blade in an drill press vice.

...which would hold the blade exactly 45 degrees off plumb... your point?

Thanks Bob for this video. I have found sharpening my router hand plane blade a challenge. What I came up with was to just sharpen the bottom side so that i feel the burr comes onto the top angled face. It's easy to sharpen this way free hand and as best I can tell there really shouldn't be any impact. Removing metal from the bottom vs. angled top (which is where we traditionally sharpen) should result in the same thing. The only thing I could possibly think of is that it might result in wearing out the router plane blade a bit faster but I doubt I would go through one in my lifetime. What are your thoughts?

Should be fine as long as you hone the entire face and keep it flat. If you start to get a bevel or roundness to the edge, you could end up reducing the clearance angle. If that bottom face gets too steep of a bevel the plane won’t cut at all no matter how sharp it is. As long as you’re keeping the bottom face flat and not changing the angle, you should be fine.
