I used to work at Stewart and Stevenson in Sealy, Texas as a Welder and helped build these vehicles. I remember the company changed to Armor Holdings and then now its BAE Systems.

FYI, the broken headlight is a blackout headlight. It uses a 12 volt bulb and a green filter. Not IR but for night vision goggles.
Also, the panel supports go in the small box with the double pins.
You can reset the transmission computer and switch to atf to make it shift easier. Check the maintenance manual.
Finally, don't raise the cab with door open. You'll warp the cab and it's not fixable.

I drove around 300 brand new LMTV's over a week when they where fielded at Ft. Stewart. The lowboy's delivered them to a giant field a few miles from main Camp and Maint had to relay them back to the units motor pools. We took a few on detours to see what they would do! All most got one stuck so yes we had fun. Hope you never need to do any electrical work on it...

Watching you two dorks fumble and joke around this goofy vehicle was the most entertainment I've had with morning coffee in a while. The jokes just write themselves. Best quote of the vid? @18:16 Save the JP-8 for the theoretical helicopter that you'll be lifting this with. I think those lift eyelets would be more for putting this POS on a cargo ship bound for a peace-keeping mission in some Mid-Eastern or African shjthole. LMTV = Low Maintenance Toy Vehicle. Glad you plugged the podcast, I'll be tuning in for the non-stop laughs.

I have a funny story about a truck like that. Once upon a time in Korea a infantry guy left his kevlar in the front seat, and when they flipped the cab it busted the windshield out. It was winter time and this happened out in the field. he had to drive it around for like a month and drive it back to base, lol.

2.5 tons is the OFF-ROAD rating, mostly because of the tires. We regularly put far more on them.

The C 21 on the front is the "Bridge Plate". It's a weight/class marker to ensure a particular bridge can handle a specific vic.

Hey Wes I know it's been a year but, if you happen to know, what would a blank letter plate (maybe was painted over) and 11 for the numbers. does the 21 mean it's heavier?

The tonnage rating for military trucks is how much the truck can carry offroad, and is generally half of the onroad payload rating.

  • @aodhankarlsson2018

We remove and store the panels for loading palletized equipment, the framework can stay in place as long as your truck didn't have the jump-seats in the bed installed you're good to go. We also only use JP-8 (close to JET-A) if we're refueling from a military fueling point-- in the NG you refuel from a civilian fuel point about 70% of the time and run #1/#2 ULSD.

Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) I had guessed Light Military Tactical Vehicle. When the bed of the truck is 5 feet of the ground it's not a sissy ladder it is a necessary piece of equipment unless you can jump like Spud Webb.

This trucks were designed in Austria by Steyr Daimler Puch in Steyr. But they had to be built in the US, and Stewart and Stevenson was the partner doing that. But the quality wasnt the there as expected.

35' is the radius, from turn center to outside front corner of the cab. your wall to wall distance is really going to be about 65' (70 for continuous circles between walls, but you can clip one side by starting out flat against it and pulling away)

Talking about the tires, a friend of mine says his father gets the military surplus tires because ther cheap. He said when a tire gets a nail or goes flat they tend to replace the whole set and the good ones go to the used surplus stores

When i got out of the active army, i joined the guard and reclassed from a 14S to become a medic. It was a year long, one weekend a month NG training course. I met a 82nd grunt in the course and we were buddies, at the 2 week field exercise before graduation, he asked me how to start a HMMWV. i laughed and talked shit thinking he was joking, but as an airborne 11B, he REALLY had never started a HMMWV. My MOS was based on the Avenger system, so i incorrectly thought every soldier had driven and maintained vehicles. It was a good life lesson.

In our Iraqi LOG Base, a young lady drove her LMTV the wrong way off a cocrete slab & nosed down into a some muddy sludge covered with a generous layer of often damp River rock. (Our Batt. Commamder spread that slippery shit EVERYWHERE as 'eye candy', and, as it turned out, secondary projectiles for our nightly mortar barrages).
ANYWAY, We ended up using our old reliable Duece to drag her truck back up onto the slab as the LMTV's front axle wouldn't engage at all, ultimately leaving her stranded with only one wheel turning. Personally I'd LOVE to get my hands on one with the command van, to camp with.

damn nice truck , I''ve always loved military vehicles and currently own several retired military trucks ,,
I DON'T own a Deuce yet but i have something better
in 2001 before the military started recapping used trucks and rebuilding them i bought an original M977-A1 cargo truck
it hadn't been driven in years ,,paid just $8000 for it and had a friend with a 50 ton wrecker tow it home for me
5 years it took to fully rebuild it ,, it's one of the most fun vehicles i have ever driven
in 2015 i broke the original allison automatic transmission which led to another complete going over because i could not get a replacement transmission and mine was unfixable
this resulted in my completely replacing the 2 stroke detroit diesel and the automatic transmission
the engine i chose was a cummins ISX coupled to an EATON 18 speed autoshift ,,it made a massive difference in the way this huge truck drives ,the 16 liter cummins engine has 575HP and it's all automated
even more fun when you start pulling something cause i haven't found a truck that can out pull me

I drag raced a 1078 with my M35A2 and left him in the dust. Not that eather truck accelerate very fast not fast enough to make the MP's think your trying to race to 35mph.

Back in 70's a buddy tried to talk me into buying a copter. He had just retired from Air Force, he had be in Germany. He said they had the Korean ( Mash TV ) type in Germany still boxed up new. We could buy one for $10,000 plus shipping. I couldn't ever see getting my money back. We would have had to store it somewhere, while we put it together. We needed a hanger, none at the local airport. We had to get it certified, l would have to learn to fly. My buddy would teach me. Those old things barely would fly with 2 people in them. In Korea they stripped them of everything not required to make it fly, just so could handle pilot, 2 passengers on skids. Go buy a chopper.

It is a FMTV which is Family of Mobile Tactical Vehicles made by Stewart and Stevenson. It is a company out of Texas if it still exist. That truck is the version of the two and half ton and the six wheel version is the five ton. The fuel is diesel, JP8 is the military designation for diesel fuel. The horn is weak for a large truck.

My M923A1 goes flat out at 60 mph also at around 8 mpg and the tire speed rating is printed on the tire sidewall and if you open the fuel screw you may burn a piston and or burn you tranny. There are alot of truck rollovers when our brave service people try to hot rod these trucks, You mite be surprised how easy it is to flip. The ABS is a maybe on a good day. Good video.

Why not reindex the wiper so it goes further across the windshield?

Is the winch hydraulically operated and not off the pto? Why is it so far back? Just so it can pull from the back as well? I've seen that on some Russian trucks and always wondered

On the wiper, try removing, rotating a couple of splines and reinstalling.
