Aquasana Water Filter Leaking After A Filter Change? Here's The Fix

  • If you have an Aquasana water filter, like my Aquasana AQ-5300+, the AQ-5300, or anything in the Claryum 3-Stage water filter family, you may have noticed that it developed a slow leak after you swap out the filters.
    I bought authentic Aquasana replacement filters ( amzn.to/3IaI0gE ) and replaced them with a great deal of care, following the directions to the letter, but I still got a leak! Here's how I got my unit to stop leaking, why it leaked, and what you should look out for with your filter.

    This!! I went to Lowes and I got #6 o-ring 7/16" O.D. x 5/16" I.D x 1/16". Danco brand. My filter has been leaking for three weeks after elements replaced. I put o-rings on the first stage and so far leaking has stopped. I’m gonna get a supply of these and just change all 8 with each element change.

      I can confirm that Danco #6 o-ring did work! After changing the filter, one of sump was leaking very slowly. So I removed the 4 o-rings from that sump, just using my hand and a parring knife. Then I greased the Danco o-rings with a bit of Vaseline, and slipped them onto the sump, again no special tool needed, just my hand. And the leak is gone.

    Thank you so much for this video! Every time I change these filters it has been cumbersome. This time the black sediment filter was leaking, even though everything was In properly! I definitely think the O rings were compressed and after about a week with a tray underneath, the issue resolved itself!!

    Im going to try new o-rings. Last time I changed my filters the o-ring was obviously damaged. I switched it out with the ones from the stage 2 i was throwing out and it worked. Another time, just changing stage 1 and 3 it leaked, i kept trays under and dumped the water daily and it eventually went away! I just did a switch of all filters and the leaking was driving me nuts, again. The actualy filter change out went so smoothly! Im going to try all new o-rings. If not, if we reno our kitchen, im going to replace this with another system. A friend of ours is very knowledgeable about these things and another company now delivers on all the same filtration levels this does. So it's no longer the only contender! But lets see....thank you! This made me drag my feet on changing the filters out as i couldnt handle dealing with the leaks, smd thats not good for anyone

    So glad for the folks who mention the O-rings. When I called aquasana, I asked for replacement O-rings and they told me they don't send out those. They only send out new replacement tops. Sigh... So yeah, they're free, but I still have to pay $9 for postage. And they were supposed to be here no later than 4 days ago. They're not here yet. I wanted new o-rings but wasn't sure of the size. Thanks for sharing that. I'm just gonna buy a bunch of them.

    I can understand why the o-rings might be the problem for the sump heads. They go through install/uninstall cycles twice a year. So replacing those o-rings with the Danco's will help. The filters themselves always have a fresh o-ring there, so no problem.
    But what about the large o-ring on the sump head? It goes through two cycles/year. I would think that gets worn after a while too, especially if the sump head get tightened a bit too much.

      @HelpAtMyHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those large o rings have been ok for me since you can really tighten down the lower piece using the provided plastic wrench. I might be over tightening them but I haven’t had any leaked from this larger seam so I think I’m making it tight enough that any o ring compression is ok.
      My hunch is that they just need a slightly larger or tougher ring for the sump head bit the others are ok.

  • @richardm5701
    @richardm5701 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks for putting this up.
    I just ran into an issue with the large o-ring connection but had an easy fix that worked in my case - just ever so slightly loosening it. I had just replaced the filters on mine which only took a few minutes, but as soon as the water was switched back on the second sump started leaking a lot from the bigger opening (so the large o-ring). I tried disassembling then reassembling it but with no luck and also tried tightening it as much as possible by hand and with the plastic wrench supplied which didn't help the leak at all. I also looked into replacement o-rings, but I don't think they make anything in that size (3 inch / 7.5 cm). I was getting ready to disconnect the whole system when, as a large ditch try, I partially loosened it, so slightly less tight than my initial try, which stopped the leak... possibly over tightening can distort the o-ring? So maybe just a bit of experimentation with how tight/loose the connection is might be a good thing to try first for problem solving the large connection.
    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for posting the vid. I'm about to change my filters in AQ-5300+ for the first time. Concerned about leaking as other have experienced, so I ordered a kit of Danco O-Rings and plan on replacing all of them when I change the filters, cheap insurance. Since there is a little confusion as what is the correct size, I wonder if they are metric? Also what do you think about applying a little food grade silicon lube/grease.

    • @HelpAtMyHome
      @HelpAtMyHome  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think some food grade lube would be fine and some companies, like 3M, do ship their filter components with a little lube on them. Personally I wanted to avoid anything that wasn’t exactly following the directions but my non-professional guess is that you’d be ok.

    I don't understand why they don't just send units with extra o-rings.
    I have this issue with a new aquasana reverse osmosis system. I called about the stage one filter sump leaking, right after initial installation. The tech person had me swap the first and third stage filters to see if it was the sump or the socket the sump fits into which might have a casting flaw or something causing the leak. The leak followed the filter so she arranged for a new sump to be sent to me. Two days later I noticed that now the third stage filter is also leaking so I called back and this time they told me I would have to pay shipping on a new sump head. So they want to charge me $10 to send me a part that really only needs four little o-rings.

    • @HelpAtMyHome
      @HelpAtMyHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same exact issue. My only guess is that the o-rings would be hard to install? I guess they are a tight fit or you'd need an o-ring tool and it's cheaper to just send the sump head?

    Do not buy AquaSana - I've had continuous leaking problems when I install new filters and they will not send new parts after one year.
    If you have to pay a handyman or plumber to go through this process it may cost you hundreds of dollars - so for non do it your selfers it can be costly. For do it your selfers - what is your time worth to spend half a day or more messing with this??
    What should be an easy half hour filter replacement job turns into several hours and trip to the hardware store and water cleanup and phone calls to AquaSana.

    In my case, filter 1 was the one that had an air leak and caused the low pressure. The solution I found on another video was to take one of the "o" rings from the old filter cartridge you are going to discard. Place that "o" ring on the new filter cartridge and make it pass the two that are already there and push it all the way until is flushed with the wall. It is not taking the place of the two that are already there. It's creating a seal at the bottom of that gap. I believe it could happen to any of the 3 filter cartridges, so the way to tell is when you open the water faucet, the one that has the leak will be loud as the air filters in. Just put your ear close to the filters and you will hear it.
