Cricket is a simple sport, with some complicated rules.
It’s perceived as an honourable game, played in the right spirit, with rules and traditions established over centuries. But, in reality, teams are always searching for advantages.
So how can a team gain an advantage, fair or otherwise?
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes. Craig Silcock illustrates.

As an australian, i watched this video with great intent.
i bet mate, fascinating stuff 😂😂😂
Said with the true Aussie spirit
as an indian i was waiting for tendulkar's tampering in 2004
lol
Bro is unveiling his ancestral dna 😂😂😂
Joe Devine + Cricket. Just the combination I needed.
I wish him a long life. He has the best voice for across all of Tifo channels
My thoughts exactly.
What I would give for the old tifo gang to review the india England test series
what a combo hey. was not expecting it but so good
It's a shame he mispronounces every word beginning "trans"
I've always thought Tifo should have a channel dedicated to cricket.
Oh yeah. I've been wanting a Tifo cricket channel for ages. Get Jarrod Kimber signed up ASAP boys
Who is tifo and why is everyone so excited about tifo's cricket channel?????
@@Playerone1287 They have been producing quality footy content for like 7-8 yrs. If u r a footy fan, you probably'd have watched them. I guess u r not, they hire top journos so yeah u'll get top notch cricket videos

As a baseball fan, I’m glad to see that ball tampering is a tradition across stick-and-ball sports. For a while now, baseball pitchers have been covertly using sticky substances to increase their spin rate and therefore lateral movement on their pitches. Idk if it’s gone down now but it was kind of a big deal in the MLB a couple years ago
Something worth adding about the Australian tampering: the penalties listed here were handed out by Australia itself, not the ICC. I believe the ICC was going to give Bancroft a 1-match ban, and that's all.
Bancroft has basically got a life ban. He'd have had many more opportunities playing Tests without this stain on his record. Warner was tolerated while he contributed runs, Smith is tolerated because he's one of the better players of his generation, but nobody will be sad once they've both retired.
@listey Disagree about nobody being sad about Smith retiring.
Smith is literally one of the best cricketers to have played. He averaged over 60 for quite a while and only in recent years has he regressed below that.
It is always sad to see a great player retire
Even though England have the worst cheating record in the history of the game but of course you not mentioning that. Pommy cheats.
@@listeyBancroft literally played 3/4 tests after his ban. He was just bad
@@listeyThe thing is after the sandpaper incident as Bancroft was banned from playing cricket, he lost his form. And was never the same player as he used to. He was a hot prospect for the Aussies but failed. Wasted talent.
Australians: write that down, write that down 😂
That harsh ugly voice doing the ad at the end is a horrible contrast to the dulcet tone of Joe’s voice.
I had to scroll to far for this. Nice calm video then an american shouting at me to support them, jesus christ what a contrast.
All the Australians are watching this

And Bangladeshis

Never have i ever imagined id be hearing this voice explaining cricket to me oneday. Tifo finally found the culture
If you are BCCI you can change the pitch to suit you in finals but still lose it.
Keep this series going! Ball condition has been a huge issue in baseball over the last few years! American football is also quite interesting when it comes to ball condition and tampering!! (I’m a colts fan that hates the Patriots)
Great video, the only thing missing is that scuffing the ball is done to aid in reverse swing, as the opposite happens when compared to "traditional swing", the ball usually new moves towards the rough surface of the ball. But as the ball gets worn, old and soft, no matter how much you shine it isn't going to do anything except the fact that as the rough side is scuffed more and more bowl starts to move in the opposite direction and late sharply behaving almost like a homing missle.
Ifk what sport tifo covers, I'll always watch every video with great interest
How to cheat at cricket: be Australian. End of list 😂
Faf du Plessis and Mike Atherton are Australian now?
and yet the poms have still cheated more than Australia.
must be that deadly desire for them to be more successful than us, pity it failed.

"nothing will ever truly eliminate cricket's dark arse".
It's absolutely fascinating how similar this is to the 'sticky stuff' debate in baseball.
Well baseball is rip off of cricket so obviously there are similarities. It's just other British colonies thought to defeat British in their own game and Americans just created new one
The ball changes too often in baseball for it to be a meaningful comparison.
I thought it was more similar to old-timey cheating: spitballs and emeryballs
@@listeythat's why pitchers kept (or keep) the tacky in their hands, so that it can be applied to new balls. There absolutely is a comparison; it's the science of spinning.
@@rayyanalikhan9100Baseball wasn’t invented in America. It too is originally an English game.
Just a quick correction to add context to the full story. Chris Pringle did write about the NZ team using a bottle cap to tamper with the ball...BUT this was because the Pakistani Team they were playing had been doing the same thing for the first two tests and the Kiwis chose to retaliate.
Interesting to hear how ball tampering is very much shared across all bat&ball sports. I know baseball has had numerous scandals of pitchers (the bowler in baseball effectively) using nail files, pine tar, eye black, spit, and all sorts of other stuff to gain an advantage.
Subscribing your channel because i love your way of explanation

MORE CRICKET CONTENTS PLEASE
As a baseball fan, this is the first cricket video that's ever made perfect sense to me.
A Tifo channel for cricket was much needed, at least for your Indian viewers.
Yes, and we can't forget when Indian batsman cheated by applying Vaseline to their bats.
wonderfully explained
Whose bowling action is that at the start? Seems beautiful
They are shining the one side for reverse swing in the later stages of the game. Otherwise the swing the ball by playing with the seam( pitch plays an important part)
I dont know how or may be i misunderstood something, but swinging a ball works a bit differently.
firat of all, swinging is one of the few technique of trickery for fast bowlers (those who run a bit longer than spin bowlers).
Secondly, swinging a ball depends on the bouncyness, amount of grass on pitch, moisture in the air, wind flow and most importantly (here comes the trickery part) the releasing action of the bowlers. Some realsing the ball in an angle of their hand and shoulder (not very effective). good swing bowlers use the two fingers placed on the seem of the ball. they are generally call seemers. the masters of swing bowling also use subtle wrist movement to perfect their deliveries.
What is described here is originated in Pakistan, by playing cricket using tennis balls covered with electric tape. that way the muddy dirty side in one side of the seem causes uncertainties in the direction of swing - inswing (towards batter from pitching point), outswing (outwards the batter from pitching point). Then they figured out a way where shining one side of international cricket ball in test matches causing inswing bowling action giving an outswing delivery and vice versa!
And thus the reverse swing is born.
Note: this is how i understand swing bowling. please correct me if i am wrong. and TIFO! thank you for covering cricket!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Swinging a ball does not depend on bounce or amount of grass. It is a phenomenon related to airflow.
We need a video about rugby!! Not just because it's a cool sport but also due to its relation with association football
Great video 😊
Far better than American sports thank you
This is very similar to baseball’s recent issues with substances used to manipulate the ball/gain an advantage
Tifo doing cricket ❤❤❤❤
Nice to hear geoff lemon get a shoutout
1:00 top 10 jumpscares😂😂 (watch in 2×)
cheers boys!
There is a false distinction between shining and scuffing the ball. Why allow one but not the other? Why punish players for throwing the ball in on the bounce (an action which is in full view of the umpires)? Heavily regulating this more natural way of scuffing the ball is more likely to lead to bottlecaps, zips and sandpaper getting involved because they can be done hidden from view.
Don't tell me that whacking a mouthful of spit on the ball is natural, or that now that spit is disallowed, grabbing the sweat off your forehead, covered in sunscreen, brings the game into less "disrepute".
Informative content
Imagine getting one year ban and a loads of drama and press conference for rubbing the ball with a sandpaper.
In football, a player can end career of his opponent by hard tackle and get a maximum of 3 match suspension
They only got 2 match bans from the international cricket council, they were banned for a year by their country as Australian cricket claims they play hard and fair and want to keep that image
Woah woah woah!! Hold it with that voice at the end please. Thank you
Most important part of the ban of the Aussie trio was who doled it out. They weren't even banned by the ICC, but haded a 75% match fee fine for Cameron Bancroft.
It was Cricket Australia who were feld immense national shame. Sports is an important part of the Australian culture and life. Atheletes there are idolised. So when they were caught in an already heated series, it brought the nation inmense shame (apparently to CA). Not only were they banned, Smith was sacked from captaincy and Warner life barrred from any leadership role.
The most common way of scuffing the ball is to throw it short--when you return the ball to the wicket keeper from the outfield you deliberately throw it so that it bounces on the practice wickets and used wickets, which are hard and usually quite abrasive--this is usually done when the ball is quite new.
Can team uniform providers make the pants specifically the pocket area with a coarser material on one side and finer material on the other so one side to scratch up the ball and the other to buff the ball out
No lol.
can you make a video on AFL (Australian Football League)
waiting for next cricket content

4:25 To tamper the ball, when batter misses the shot, the ball goes to the wicketkeeper to catch and after he catches, acts that he fell off and rub against sand making rough side
Just an fyi, it's now batter not batsman (just like it's bowler, fielder, keeper etc.)
Joe Devine voice is godly can he do commentary for ashes
Looked like Andy caddick in the bowling animation
im australian, watched this video for tips
YESSS as a Pakistani who likes football tifo just made my day
You missed crucial context regarding the Chris Pringle example: New Zealand were touring Pakistan, scraping the ball was a response to the home team doing it and the local umpires letting them get away with it.
as a cricket lover from India, i can already sense that one day ICC wil see this and will take either the channel or the video down
Was expecting ricky ponting to do the narration
You forgot you can just use Leather wax, the most affective thing to shine leather.

Looks like Cricket needs that special mud MLB uses
Poor Geoff, life only gave him 1 lemon
ICC has shared the video
as an Australian I was glad that this wasn’t entirely abt us
Should talk about scuffing the pitch. Altering the condition of the pitch by running on it is illegal and after the Ashwin incident many former players joked about how everyone does it but it is illegal.
The new tifo podcast is just not the same. It’s boring without Joe and others. Please give us a cricket podcast which Joe moderates
Australians will be watching this!
Petition to only have Joe do the voiceovers, I only watch the videos for him!
why not just change the ball during the game?
In a 5-day Test match, the ball may be changed after a certain duration of the innings. However, the age of the ball is part of the strategy of the game. As it gets older, it may exhibit a behaviour called reverse swing, which is used strategically. However, reverse swing isn't really a factor in T20 as the innings does not last long enough.
He should have said - I was trying to taste it.
would be more convincing.

This just proves Joe Devine has the best voice on TH-cam
in before Salman Butt, M. Aamir and M. Asif
illegal bats being used is a real thing at low level games
As an American, I don't understand why you don't replace the ball after every pitch
Because the age and condition of the ball plays a part in the evolution of the matchplay and strategy. It will be replaced if it goes out of shape or becomes unusable for other reasons.
Finally they've made a video on non-American sport that too on cheating 🤦🏻
Joe Devine.. And cricket. Didn't know I needed this. Also Tifo sign Jarrod Kimber!
too many ads
Nothing will stop it? Just replace the ball 4 times as much. The end.
Just own the bat, reality will be whatever you want
Special thanks go to Cricket Australia for their contributions to the making of this video.
Could we have a video on a particular form of cheating that England does, whenever they lose, they claim the other team has offended against the spirit of cricket in their tactics (while employing the same tactics themselves)
Get aussies on your team and you'll be ready.
Kidding
TIL cricket is a sport
Behind every cricket victory is a great theft?
Bro is Australian
( Jahangir khan ) is the greatest athlete of all time in every sports.
You left out the dodgy practice of "sooking and whining about the ball until the umpires change it, in the hope of getting one that swings more".
Small correction. Shining the ball is meant to create "reverse swing" which is different from "swing".
Chill bro !!
Not really, shining helps with normal swing at first - while the ball swings towards the rough side - then later when the ball gets older it starts reversing
The 'shining' of the old ball to produce reverse has nothing to actually do with the 'shine'. It's about rubbing spit, sweat, sunscreen, cough drops etc into the leather essentially loading up one side and making it heavier. So while normal swing moves away from the shiny side, reverse swing moves towards the now loaded side.
@@ray.shoesmithNot true at all, you ask any cricketer how to get reverse swing and there will be two answers, get the rough side as rough as possible and use minimal liquid on the shiny side. Reverse swing only ever happens in abrasive conditions or with ball tampering and is created by one side being fairly nice and the other being very jagged. Shining contributes to natural swing while tampering with the rough side contributes to reverse. As someone who can swing the ball both ways naturally and reverse I know this for certain
Cricketers have been shining the ball so it swings for centuries before anyone ever mentioned reverse swing. Your correction is completely false.
Australia watching the whole video 🤫
