  • There are many ways to achieve a good ride quality, today we are going to talk about an important one. Bump stops! Whether you are going with rubber or hydraulic, you need'em! This is not intended to be a all inclusive guide but rather a peak into the world of hydraulic bumpstops & air bumpstops. Join me as I setup a some front and rear bump stops on my wheeler. Every build has it's own set of challenges and requirements for mounting. For me, I mounted these in a location that was convenient and didn't require reinventing the wheel. That said you can get very creative in your placement to optimize performance!

    Mixing up the trades! Love how one trade can help with the other. I've seen you use the pipe wrap a few times now and it always brings back memories of my old man. He would take me out on side jobs for plumbing when I was a kid. Good times with the old man! I hope your kid will join you to and make memories 😁.

I don't review products but I will say they were quality pieces and the adjustability is nice. Anyway, thank you for the code and I'll thank them for the quality. Now to get them adjusted.

    It seems that you may want to make sure that the bump stomp travels parallel with your suspension. The way you set it up, the bump stomp is at an angle to your travel and will cause your bump stop piston to be working in bending stress. Those bump stomps I believe are designed for axial stresses only. I would rethink that location and place it so that it's tangential to your suspension travel when it's close to bottoming out.

    Awesome video Nate. Your content and quality is the best out there! I know what pipe wrap is !! When Joe was a pipe fitter I was the fire watch for them. They used pipe wrap all the time. I think I need new bump stops to limit my travel up front. We did Evans last weekend and the tire got stuffed so much we couldn’t turn?!? BTW... Congrats on the baby!

  • @jdog4534
    @jdog4534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dude. You should get more familiar with your wrap around. There's a lot of cool info on it for laying out miters and various other cut angles required to make different pipe fittings, which is useful for any fabricator. Also, in case you're wondering what the proper v nvm name is for that adjusting tool is, we would call it a spanner wrench in the U.S. ARMY. ..the British army would call an open end adjustable (crescent) wrench a spanner.. ...and they wonder why we broke away...

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on what you do with it. I think most folks would be fine with a rubber bump stop but it's so dependent on application. Thanks for watching 👍

    Question ,going 4 link in the front do i have to go full hydro

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on if you are running a panhard bar. As long as you have a panhard bar and it shares the correct geometry with your drag link, you don't need full hydro. But if you're running bigger than a 35" tire would definitely recommend hydro assist at least. 👍

    Did you have to relocate your steering box and steering components with the front stretch?

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. I pushed everything as far as it would go without relocating the box 👍

  • @Giorgino489
    @Giorgino489 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello,
    I finally installed a set of fox 2"x2.5" air bumps on the front of my TJ. I noticed they don't move (compress) at all. Is there something obvious (apparently not for me :D ) to do in order to get them fully functional? My mechanic never installed one, so he doesn't have a clue. I just installed straight out of the box (i immediately noticed they didn't compress). Thanks in advance. Cheers
    Giorgio

  • @robertsmith3697

    Do you plan on relocating the steering box to accommodate the front stretch? Full hydro?

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not neccessary. I went as far as I could to get everything pushed to its absolute limit with out relocating the steering box. I don't think I could get another 1/4" even if I wanted to lol. I dont want full hydro steering on this build. I like a mechanical link on my steering for something that occasionally gets used on public road ways. 👍

    A little off topic but do you run limiting straps in The front? I’m trying to determine if I need limiting straps. I’m a crawler, not a pre runner so I’m not jumping the thing. I have a Dana 60 rear and a 44 front. I’m coil sprung all the way arround.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't using limiting straps before but will be now. They are pretty Damn important but with the right build you can get away without having them. That said it is a lot of extra stress and strain on your shocks so just know that you are running the risk of destroying a perfectly good shock without a limiting strap. That said, I never had a problem 👍
