- TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy OnePlus 12R Review! We don't get as much mid-ranger competition in the USA. It's a SPECIAL year for OnePlus. Apple and Samsung are vulnerable at mid-pack prices, and OnePlus is looking to put some pressure on.
The 12R's strongest competitor also comes from OnePlus...

A reviewer reviewing one plus products instead of making up excuses to ignore reviewing it to make nonstop coverage of the apple vision pro instead. Love to see it.
Mk? True
💀💀
Lmao shots fired lol
@@j-cultureEnt yes very disappointed in him tbh, OnePlus added everything he wanted last year and he refused to acknowledge it
Money talks. There is a difference between honesty and doing it for the money.
Really appreciate someone actually reviewing the 12R. It really is push forward development at a really competitive price. Hopefully the North American market show this phone some love.
I hope so too. It's a crazy competition option exactly where SamApple is.most vulnerable.
@SomeGadgetguy .. what do u think of the haptic feedback when u compare to the 12 ?? Is it priscise??
@@SomeGadgetGuy Hey Juan -- I heard you asking about doing speech-to-text on Smartwatch on your SGGQA today. You can definitely do it on a Samsung. I have a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro... all you have to do is swipe up on the keyboard when first composing the messages. Once in the conversation you just click on the microphone icon and select speech-to-text instead of voice message recording.
Oneplus phones have extremely bad security, everyone that has one has seen signs of hacking, particularly bot hacking for social media accounts. Chinese phone makers are heavily compromised either by state intelligence (much like Western Hardware) or Hackers (unlike majority of Western Hardware). However because of the extremely over priced nature of Western Hardware, working class people will see these phones as a good alternative and probably by them based on hardware performance, having no idea how compromised they are.
I've owned 3 op's and they all performed awesome 👍😎
"Let's start wrapping this up" - Gives us another 7mins+ of quality content on an 18min video.
I know.... Sigh... I know...
Due to your review, I purchased the 12R. All that your review doesn't do it justice! For the price, this phone is in a class above the rest.
When you go to multi app screen, can you restart the app by clicking app info in the multi window? Or do you have to close the app and re open?
I agree on the callout of Samsung's A-series. That the 5x line is just way too expensive for what it actually offers,
It's getting frustrating. The A line used to CRUSH. Now... Not so much...
I got my op 12 yesterday and OnePlus is just improving year over year I've been rocking with them for 4 years now since the 9 pro
Lol the 9pro released 3y ago
@@bhkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk really lol my bad I'm a big tech nerd I upgrade my phone once a year so 😄
I've been rocking the One plus 7t pro McLaren for 15 years now, definitely going to upgrade for another 15 years.
All hail One Plus, our fuhrer
So jealous. Mine hasn't even shipped yet
Thanks for covering this phone! Cheaper phones tend to get way less attention but they offer a shitload more value for people who aren't necessarily gonna fully utilise the more expensive camera specs and such.
My 12 is supposed to be delivered today. If you had told me that the 8 Gen 2 was going in a brand new phone this year man I would have had a harder time between 12 and 12 R
Knowing you though, I think you'll like the 12 cameras.
This is my first reply to a TH-cam video ever in my history of being on TH-cam, and I've watched a lot in these past 16 years of having an account. But for some reason I feel compelled to leave a reply now. It's probably your genuine, knowledgeable and enthusiastic approach to this review. I'm a researcher at heart and can easily spend months finding out what's out there before making a decision. You just made it easy for me. Thanks Juan, this just saved me a considerable amount of time.
Excited to try it out. Trading in my flip 5. I just can't use a foldable without being paranoid that it'll break. One plus was giving $500 so pretty much break even.
try the phone(2)? or the pixel 7A or the 7???
7A and 7 have far worse battery and performance though. Not sure about Nothing.@@LevenZ69
The phone 2 under delivered and was overpriced and the pixel 7a and pixel 8a wjen that comes out will habe bad battery life
12R is a better deal overall,
I have had my flip 4 for 14 months and the screen is starting to crack where it folds... I just bought a 12 R as well very excited to use it!
OnePlus is really hitting their stride. I wish they made a smaller form factor phone. I loved the old OnePlus X back in the day. Great review as always !
This! If they had a ~6" phone I'd be all over it. Almost 7" seems excessive.
I'm happy I found your channel, this is an excellent video and a great comparison between the 11 and 12R. Thank you for your work!!
Try getting this spec features on a device marketed in NA from our Samsungs, Apple’s, Pixels, etc the one plus 12 feature list is insane. I just switched to the one plus 12 24gb/1tb model and happily waiting for the order to come in and get off the Apple train forever. 😂
Mr.Bagnell just doing Real work as usual fantastic review I always love your thoughts and opinions on tech man.
: quick question is there a night mode for video on the OnePlus 12 ? I know on the 11 and 10 pro if you turned on the AI setting during night mode it really improved video quality but that AI setting is gone on the camera settings on the 12. Anything I can do to get night mode on video?
So, it seems that's not on these new phones. I know on the 9 pro, the main hook was using that 2MP sensor as a way to boost light for 1080p video, but tech "reviewers" panned it as "useless". I don't know if there will be a new AI mode to replace that.
Spoke straight facts about that Apple part 🤣🤣😭😭🫡🫡
499 USD?! Holy crap thats cheap! In Sweden were i live this is 8690 sek which converts to almost 900 USD...
US is a tech lovers dream lol...
In Sweden you only get the 16/256GB version. In USA you pay $599.99 for the 256GB version. Add to that the sales tax, so e.g. in California you will actually pay $643.49 (6 670 SEK). Still a lot cheaper though.
Here in the Netherlands the 16/256 model of the 12R costs around € 600, so that's quite comparable. The 'normal' 12 is around € 800 for the 12/256 model and around € 900 for the 16/512 model. I think the 12R is the best value for money here. In day to day use you'll hardly notice the speed difference between the 8 gen 2 and gen 3, the extra screen resolution is overkill i.m.o. I don't take a lot of 'serious' pictures with my phone (mostly bar shots) and I don't give a shit about wireless charging. So, I don't think it's worth the extra 200 Euros
Just a heads up. The 12 seems to be getting the day one update in Europe now. The US should be receiving it soon and I would assume that goes for the 12R as well.
NOICE!
We just got the update here. OP sent the WHOLE image over LOL.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Dang still nothing for me. How Thicc is it?
Nice video. Love your insights on mobile processors and marketing.
I have a Realme 11 pro+ from last year, with a Dimensity 7050. Love the design of the phone, the "flagship" main sensor, the battery life. For my performance needs, 7050 is more than enough and I think the 2 performance cores + 6 efficiency cores combo is underrated. I think you get the power most users need with the addition of boosted efficiency for the vast majority of every day tasks. Bought it for 450 euros.
Thanks again for the content and the insights!
I hate how OnePlus isn’t selling their flagships through T-Mobile anymore. I know people were saying that the software on the T-Mobile versions apparently weren’t good, but now I can’t get a 12 through a carrier deal 😭
Yeah, I kinda feel (looking from the outside) that OP got hosed by that deal. Hoping they show up in some best buys, and maybe consider some signage in stores like Target.
Get it unlocked. I did that with the oneplus 11. I'm on T-mobile.
@@chickenandshrimp1338 I thought he wanted the carrier deal to get it much cheaper.
@@czkmeister oneplus usually has a great preorder, trade-in offer. Depending on what you want to trade in. I know T-mobile does support the device. They just don't sell oneplus's higher tier phones. T-mobile tends to stick to the Nord line of oneplus.
@@czkmeister oneplus always has great preorder trade-in deals.
7:30 any chance you might label which is main and which is macro in the future?
Which is better- the Oneplus 12r or the Thinkphone? Coming from an older Samsung with a Samsung watch.
Hey so im torn on which model to get. Im thinking about the 12R which would be easier on my wallet but would it be more worth it to save a bit more and get the regular 12?
Thank you for speaking the facts. Most people will never utilize the A16 or A17 Pro chip on their iPongs to the maximum anyways. Buying a S8G2 phone is overkill future-proofing in itself seeing as many average consumers upgrade their phones every 2-3 years anyways.
Hy Juan ,what phone can you recomand between Xiaomi 13 T pro,One plus 12 R and Motorola edge 40 pro? I m interested about display sound soft and camera.
Regards
I didn't even consider buying the 12R before this video. Now, it's on my shortlist for a new device when the price drops a bit (it's 100€ more expensive than the 11 here). Thanks, for your videos, I really appreciate the honesty!!!
At that price difference, the 11 is the better deal LOL.
I've gotta ask: Is that picture cutout feature actually that impressive? Since it can be done on samsungs and xiaomi devices running lower end processors.
Great video as always. Although for some reason I had to switch to the desktop version of the Firefox app to get voice typing to work. So I'm going to use this comment to troubleshoot it. You can ignore this. Just need a small sample size to diagnose the problem. Okay that's good enough be well.
I accidentally ordered the 12 gb ram version of the OnePlus 12, instead of 16 , do you think that'll make a big difference?
Juan can you do a video or a short on the x100 since you loved the x80 so much. Thinking of upgrading
th-cam.com/video/Y-WW0tVFmsk/w-d-xo.html
The best overall deal Oneplus has going right now in my opinion. Oneplus usually has a $30 off deal on their website, which drops the base 128gb black version to $369 with any phone, any condition trade in deal.
I mean... That sounds like a pretty good buy to me...
That's the price deal I got and I'm loving it
I traded in my 8T in for the 12R which is arriving today. I wanted to move up the evolutionary ladder a bit although I have the Open, too. I can always break out the Oneplus One if I'm feeling nostalgic...! Oh, nice review!
I heard that curved phones are prone to get damages easily. Does this apply to this phone aswell?
The problem for the UK supplied OnePlus 12R for me or those who travel a lot abroad are the lack of eSim and Band LTE Band 71 for travel to the US
There are too many things about this phone, not to love, so I bought it as a backup. Your reviews are always on point, and I always learn something when I check in over here. Why am I not subbed? That changes today. Thanks for all the hard work.
Or OnePlus could of put a Monochrome sensor that works in unison with main and wide to give better blacks etc instead on 2mpickle lens.
The more I watch your videos the more I admire your realistic and very professional point of view focused on actual tech rather than marketing. Great work.
The Thinkphone, Oneplus 11 & 12rs are all really compelling for dual nano sim phones in the US. I ended up going with the Thinkphone just for the neat ThinkPad connectivity etc. Plus a dual nano sim is nice so I don't have to carry 2 phones lol😂.
Sir pls clear my confusion
12 vs 12r?
Want phone for day to day usage
12r
Day to day doesn't need high end activities...so 12 r better...
12 is better but also costs more and you might even not need that high end specs
12:14 what is the controller's name?
From one Won to another Juan…thanks for a knowledgeable review that accentuates most what helps those of us who don’t have the bandwidth to go deep in analysis!
Overall how is ur experience with 12R any heating issues , any charging issues ,any kind of lags,? Any chance green line may come in future...?? Planning to buy 12R since 12 is bit costly ...
I was looking at upgrading from my Oneplus 8 pro. But i was surprised most comparison websites have Oneplus 8 pro as the better phone, compared to Oneplus 12R. Am i missing something?
usually midrange phones have a bad micrphone.
like my Nothing phone 1, it's camera quality is perfect but the microphone is really bad.
is the microphone good on this one ?
@SomeGadgetguy .. what do u think of the haptic feedback when u compare to the 12 ?? Is it priscise??
The 12 has a more distinct pulse, the 12R has that older style which makes the phone feel hollow, or like the typing is being done with a tiny woodblock.
@@SomeGadgetGuy cool.. that's what I wanted to know .. I like a good haptic motor.. should be pricise
Nice to see this review of the OnePlus 12R!
I can't agree more on the camera situation. I would prefer 2 good sensors to 1 good and 2 moderate sensors., But still, what a phone!
Mine is coming the 14th... can't wait...
does it have mhl compatability
I just did a ton of research and I'm positive this is the absolute best phone you can get for it's price. I'm about to get one exclusively for the sd8g2 chip and the price. I just can't confirm if it is compatible with straight talk. Do you know if it is compatible?
Just got it myself and I love it so far. Not going back to my iPhone 15 plus
It's a shame phones like this aren't reviewed as much bcuz the obsession with the so called flagships but the 11 performed just as good or even better than these over priced other phones
Gotta love "reviewers" talking about all the mouth breathing BASIC "avuraj cunzoomers" but showing off phones that MAYBE 10% of the population will really buy...
Great review. I was going to buy 12R, but then I saw European pricing. We have to pay $770 💀
Even with tax included that's still over $100 more.
Scoping out potential upgrades for my soon to be s21 ultra. I feel like I'm going to miss that 100x zoom.
I love it. Google has a worthy competitor for its A line. Do you go with overall performance or camera capabilities (including processing)? Great job OnePlus.
depending on how good the actual gcam ports run on the 12r, it might be a clear loss for google.
@@TH-cam-Censorship-Police I didn't think of that.
A friend's mom is travelling to the US on March. My friend wants to ask her for a phone so I thought exactly about the 12R or the 7a, and it's really a "better photos vs everything else" scenario! Maybe adding better software support to the 7a side. It's only two advantages, but relatively big ones!
Who said the 12R is gonna take worse photos? IMX 890 is a better sensor than the one found in the Pixel 7A.
@@arkhalis3682 but that Google post processing tho
@@GerardinhoLP OnePlus post processing isn't much further behind, trust me, I've seen enough sample shots on the internet.
I got the OnePlus 8 and i upgrade 2 oneplus 12R. I hope i liket when inget it home
I have a Xiaomi 12, and thinking to buy a OnePlus12R, do you think it's worth?
Will be trading in my OnePlus 9 for a 12R soon here for some better network compatibility. Can't seem to find a suitable carrier in my area to support this 9 and I truly hate T-Mobile these days. This video has given me a lot of good info about the phone. Excellent review
we salute you for standing up for our pockets...
excited to get this phone. I am upgrading from the oneplus 8 so should be great. Picked up the genshin edition
I was thinking of getting the 12 but maybe the 12r is a better option. My one concern is does it have video out via the USBC? I like to display out to TVs and projectors and that is always a deal breaker for me. I wish it had support for a nexdock too. don't know if that would work... Anyone have any info on this?
Nope. No video out. Just like the OP11. The OP12 brought it back.
@@SomeGadgetGuy thank you!!! Made my decision.
I gotchu fam
....and. it feels good in the hand.
16 gb 256 gen 2 on the website. 369 plus tax free ship. You can't beat it.
whatever you do, mayne - just continue being yourself
i respect you because you're not a corporate shill
you're making me have high hopes for the next generation of open
if it can hold its own against this year's 'gamer' phones, i might just switch
you know, my issue is that the back panel of the regular Oneplus 12 feels like very thin paper.
i ordered one but i sent it back right away after feeling that.
the cheaper a phone, the more willing i am to accept that.
Crazy to say it but I will: one plus is the pushing the best phone tech in North America. It's not just "best bang for your buck" it's simply "the best" . You're not getting ripped off for paying to play
I'd be happy if Google lowers the OS updates to 5 years to keep the price competitive. My 3a XL had no slowdowns in day-to-day operations until the last 3 months in its 5th year of use, at which time I upgraded to the 8. Super happy with the cameras.
I'm starting to feel like I should recommend more of my friends wait out until we see how companies will bring back easily replaceable batteries...
I wish pricing was more equal throughout the world. This starts at $750 in my country, which puts it in flagship level price. But I'm happy with my Pixel 7 Pro though, which I got a few weeks ago for about $200 refurbished.
*Also a point about the Tensor G2, it's really not bad. I know it had a lot of troubles when released, but now, especially on Android 14 it's smooth, powerful and doesn't heat up anymore. For everyday use browsing internet, streaming music, navigation etc. it's perfect. And those cameras, I think it's unnecessary to mention how amazing they are.
Great video, Still loving my Oneplus 11
It feels nice that hte OP11 isn't really left behind in this strategy.
Does the 12R have video out on the USBC like the 12?
No, just USB-C 2.0.
Great ! someone finally took a look at the Oneplus 11r . Yeah it would be $430 out the door including tax when using the $100 discount for any phone and condition . This is a great deal as long as you need the two other lens .
As a 12r user, I'm satisfied a lot
It's up upgrade for my over my realme x2pro and that was a legend in it's own time (even still is comparing with others in terms of efficiency and performance)
Anyone having doubts about green line, only 1 user (op12, not 12r) has surfaced and even then, there's no solid proof to suggest it was not human error
It's not an upgrade over op11 tho, or even 11r, but it is over all pre-11 series phones
The AI tool works on oneplus 9 pro too pretty cool to see new features added to an older model
Oh snap. I haven't tried that yet!
I can understand the appeal of the 12R as an affordable flagship. Heck, even the 16/256 version is significantly less than the 8/128 Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. However, I'm not sure about getting the 12R when secondhand 11 is selling for around $500 to $550.
Brighter screen and larger battery versus higher resolution and better cameras. It's a GOOD fight.
If u wanna use it for a long time like 4-5 years...go for 12r... Otherwise second hand is not bad
Happy birthday!!! 🎉🎊🎁
3:00 I completely agree. Reminscing the Poco F1 days... 😂
With phones harboring humongous displays, it might be best that manufacturers copy how smart launcher implements their user experience design. I'm talking about launchers.
I'm still using my OP 8T, but this is pretty tempting. I've been thinking about upgrading too.
8T to this would be a nice little upgrade...
Hands down best value per dollar. Picking one up soon
OnePlus said last year when presenting the 11 that they're going back to roots and focusing on their quality which is why they dropped a 'Pro' version and that the flagship version will be the entry version
Thank you for being honest about the one plus 12R
😎👍
That's why Samsung Dex is great. With all that power, Dex just extends the life of the phone. I still have my older Samsung phones running media dudies with the TVs around the house.
Not having a desktop experience is a deal breaker.
I wish more folks would really give it a shot. I know PLENTY of people who's whole computing needs could be easily covered by an S10.
I've got an A54 Juan, which before I get accused of being a peasant, I dont use as my 'main driver', but how do you think the A54 compares to this? Both sort of upper mid range.
I talk about that a bit in the video. I'm not very kind to Samsung's options near this price 😅
@@SomeGadgetGuy I wish companies would stop putting the 2 megapickle macro lens on their devices, there's one on the A54 too. Total waste of time and they just do it to make a device appear more 'premium' than it actually is.
Clearly there's a much better chip in the One Plus than the Samsung.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Just watched 9 to 5 Google describe the 8 mgp ultra wide lens as awful on the 12 R. Although I suppose they would say that wouldn’t they.
I was surprised by its performance indoors, but my expectations were SUPER low. It is a weak sensor/lens combo. In good light, I can call it adequate for landscapes, but it's certainly not as useful as the ultra-wides on more expensive phones.
I'm quickly losing loyalty to Samsung and am shopping around for a better option in the mid range market but I believe the a54 still has a sd card slot to expand storage which believe it or not is still a desired thing by some
Use a gcam port for the camera
Pixel 7 and 7a would have been great contenders, but the giant put off on the Pixels for me is the lack of 5g outside supported countries. These very countries, like here in the Philippines is where the 12R is actually marketed on, and oh boy, Pixel will hardly compete here when even entry grade phones are 5G ready.
Yeah that regional regulatory stuff is messy, and Google REALLY isn't good at playing that game. See also, fitbit leaving a lot of regions.
Main advantage of A54 is SD card support
That is handy.
This is literally costing me the same amount as my OnePlus 6t did 5 years ago....i say thats a pretty nice deal for an upgrade in every category
I am still so confused on what to buy for a new phone its either one of the Oneplus 12's or a google 8. I am leaning more towards oneplus as I own a oneplus 7 pro I love it. Its just a massive brick so are the 12's lol.. I hate phone shopping so God dang much!
Not enough storage for me. I wonder if Xiaomi will give us a successor to the Redmi Note 12 Turbo? I also want to keep the headphone jack. The 7+ gen 2 is good enough for me. It doesn't lag or slowdown and close to the 8 gen 1.
Gotta love getting away from Samsung's silicon...
@@SomeGadgetGuy definitely
12R or 11... Which one should I buy? 11 has better cameras apparently but is it worth the little extra price compared to the 12R? Because the screen improvements at the 12R have caught my attention but I still need a good camera, maybe the difference is not so tragic
Yeah that's a tough comparison. The telephoto is good, but I don't use it that much. THe ultrawide is the big difference. So, do you need the brighter screen or the better ultrawide?
@@SomeGadgetGuy That's the thing. In reality I usually use main camera most part of the time, I would consider the ultrawide a "nice to have".
Do you have any idea if the screen differences about both phones is just the brightness or also something else? Internet is lacking (as long as I'm aware) a full on hands comparison between the 11 and 12R
Thank for you reply though!
Lower resolution and brighter. Still higher than 1080 though.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Alright, I see.
I will upgrade from an 7T so I believe in the end one or another will feel like an incredible upgrade 😂
@@edgardiogo94 Which one did u get and how is it?? I'm on the same boat 😢
Another great excellent video to the point that I immediately looked it up on their website (UK) at £650 and no expandable memory or headphone jack has made me pause, there's a lot to like about the 12R but I would really like to not lose those particular features. Great Job as always Sir.
Fewer and fewer options left to vote with your wallet there.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Well just gonna sit tight for the moment and see what this year brings, please keep on doing what you do, it's truly appreciated
Think this is gonna be my next phone. My OnePlus 9 is starting to have some freezing issues time to upgrade.
OP9 to OP12 should be a fun upgrade 👍
How many years is OnePlus offering OS updates?
3 years os,4 security
Quite enough
Extended support beyond 5 years is not actually that critical, hardware gets irrelevant plus keeping the phone condition in a good shape will be challenging.
No A55 from Sammy this year ... a rumored significant price hike for the pixel 8a, the only NA midrange competition will be Motorola (supposedly the new SD 7 G3) and the "new" SE from Apple's bin of spare parts lol. Oneplus has a shot. 😂
I am finally moving off of my oneplus 7 pro to get the 12R. Expect similat stellar performance and worry free use for years.
Did you get it ?
If yes, how is the experience??
Amazing❤
OnePlus 12R is mostly likely going to be my next phone.
It's such a punchy option. Great price to performance.
Credit Oppo/One plus, they brought the game here in a big way. They opened up allot of eyes
