    i discovered this down the range when i was trying to emphasise keeping shaft lean and hands forward through impact, was doing really slow swings and found i was completely flushing it without almost any effort. completely changed my swing, great vid!

    Evening Johnathon. Another great video. As far as I go, you explain the swing (issues and corrections) far better than anyone out there. I've stop watching Russell Heritage, Eric Cogorno, Saguto Golf, Steve Pratt... and Alistair Davies...All fine instructors(but to many cooks in the kitchen), but you're the man. Ive had three simulator session and I'm striking the ball amazingly. Also played a few simulator courses and I've shot some amazing scores... Thanks and keep it up...

    Just came across your channel and this video. You're the first teaching pro I've seen that deals with a physical problem like but different than mine. I was a scratch player and at one point had a +1.6 handicap. In 2010, I fell off a ladder and had a nasty break which led to having my right ankle fused 3 years later. My swing speed with a driver was 108-113 before and now it's 91 mph tops. I have an extremely hard time getting off of my right side now because I don't have any movement in my ankle. 8 iron carry used to be 155yds and now it's.............130 if I flush it. It's getting to the point that I don't know if I"ll every have any club head speed again.
    I admire how you are able to swing the club. I'll never give up this great game but I do hope I find a way to get my swing speed up to 100-103mph. I'm blessed to be able to play a little and I know I'll never be what I once was but I'm realistic about my game.
    Cheers and God bless from across the pond

    I have been taking lessons over the winter and my main problem was that I was using my upper body and almost no lower body. I'm primarily working on my driver swing but this is exactly where I am now in the learning process. I am trying to lead with my lower body and learn to lag, letting the arms trail and then snap through. I'm a fit 5'10, 190 lb and muscular man but my best drives are 220. I'm desperately trying to learn to add 20 yards to that and without any doubt, this is the key.

      I found that just trying to swing my driver to 150 yard target gave me the largest gains & more fairways hit! Annika Sörenstam driver swing speed was to “swing 6”. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being her fastest speed with the driver, she would only swing at 6 (60%). The better efficiency of your ball strike on the club head, you will gain longer & straighter hits! Try it…you will be surprised! I’m 71 years old and regularly hit my drives in 230-260 yard range!

    I think you're really talking about "limited body mostly arms" vs. "body turn plus arms in the proper sequence". I don't believe the arms are actually slower. 3d motion capture shows pros generate a ton of hand speed very early in the downswing as a result of great sequencing. Athletic Motion Golf channel covers hand speed concepts and is worth a look. Your lesson is correct, it's just golf concepts are difficult to communicate because we all use different verbiage and have a different "feel vs. real".

    • @johnr2632
      @johnr2632 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I would say most amateurs 10+ handicap are swinging their arms too much and are out of sequence. For them I think ignoring the pro level analysis is a good idea and instruction like this video is better. If you completely ignore the arms and make them 100% passive, i.e. don't even try and move them and just simply turn the lower body first and then feel like you are turning everything through the ball slightly after - whilst totally ignoring the arms - it's the best thing to think about. After that is mastered then more work can be done on generating even more speed. It's amazing how much more consistent the strike is when completely turning off the arms in the swing. The only thing to be very careful of is getting the backswing right. Really important not to move the left arm across the chest in the backswing. It should actually naturally press against the lower chest in the downswing.

    • @seymourbutts563
      @seymourbutts563 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Terrible advice saying slow arms is better. His fast arms example is zero body rotation which is stupid in itself. Effective sequencing is the actual issue here

    JC: I keep reading 85% of the speed is generated above the waist and I see it with the older golfers. They have no rotation or weight shift and just fire the arms and do ok off the tee as far as distance. How do these demo guys hit 300 yards on their knees or sitting in a chair - upper body 100%? I have swing speed radar I've used for years and if I fire the arms like a maniac the speed does increase as I flip the clubhead. If I'm understanding this correctly there is NO conscious pulling on the handle at any point in the swing? There are instructors here telling me to push with the right hand. Clear this up! Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Got me thinking. I think this may be misleading because it’s not fast arms or slow arms at all. Irrespective of how fast your arms go, you have to be in sync with your body. There is an illusion that there are slower arms, but it’s just more synchronized. In fact, the longest hitters have greater hand speed then the average hitters, but they can properly support that speed by great synchronization. That’s why tour pros look so slow and smooth. If the arms or the body tries to out pace the other…. Doomsday 😂.
    Now, some people will need the feel of slowing the arms or being more patient, while others will need the feel of speeding the arms up. But, if they get it right, the end product will be synchrony.

My pre shot routine always includes a mental note of arms off and left bicep pressing to lower chest on the downswing. Just got to keep telling the brain what you want. It's amazing how the body just reverts to old habits if you let the unconscious take over. Until it becomes natural you have to think about what you want to happen.

    Are you a PGA professional? Where abouts do you work in the UK?

    My concern is the gaps in the net 😎

    The two swings look the same. In fact the second looks like you’re turning much faster. Your wrists are probably stiff/tense in the the first swing and soft(er) in the second…

    Jesus. What do you mean by passive arms? If I keep them passive how can I generate speed?!?

    Golf is weird: When I do this experiment I get the exact opposite result, which is why I still have an "arms first" type swing. When I slow my arms down and lead with my lower body, I lose around 8mph swing speed and my shots go nowhere. I guess there are no absolutes in golf- you just need to find what works best for you.

      Sounds like some variables are out of place. May also be a feel vs real scenario for yourself

      @@jchowngolf I was a member of the Gankas website for a year and they told me I was "matched up" and that I'd have to change a lot of variables in order to be open at impact. Since I'm a low single digit handicap, they said it wasn't worth pursuing a big swing change since I hit the ball well and pretty far (280 drives, some sneak out to 300) as it is. Different moves work well for different people, I guess. Enjoyed your video, regardless!

    The back of that net looks in a very precarious situation 😂

    Maybe explain where in the turn you actually fire your arms, because you're definitely not generating all of that speed simply by rotating and not throwing the arms at some point (shrug)

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m having no conscious firing of the arms in any of the body oriented shots. The arms will naturally catapult through.

    Dunno…the body swing looks like it has the fast arms…better to capture the attack angle to see what loft you get between the two swings.

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s the point. If the body moves better it speeds up the arms without trying to physically speed up the arms

  • @jamesdailey5485

    Now do fast arms with a complete pivot stall.

    It didn't look like your arms were slow. It just looked like your arms and body were fast.

    Arms are not moving slower, it just feels like they are.

    Arms swing does not create the right launch through compression and deporting as well.

    Looks like you swing hard either way
