I came across this video because of the title and was blown away with this information. I have always heard to raise your arms in the backswing for the 25 years I have been playing bad golf. The next day I stepped out into the field beside my house to try this swing technique out. I could only use a Gap & PW because of the length of the field. After working slowly with this swing technique to begin with, I hit the 1st ball with about 60% effort 100 Yds straight to my target. As I worked up to 80% & 100% swings, I was blown away at how effortless this swing was and how much more accurate the ball flight was. So the next day I had to get to the driving range and see how this worked with full swings for all of my clubs. I spent 2 hours on the driving range and I found out that this swing technique works great with all of my clubs. I was striking the balls with less effort and getting 10 - 20 yards more distance with each club. And most all of the shots were landing so close to my target. My driver shots were 20 yards longer and much more straighter. I couldn't believe the results I was getting. I will be heading to the course in a few days to try this out. i was able to try it just doing some chipping and so far it seems quite valid. i'm now thinking of the golf action as a bit more linear and not up and down so much. like you say the swing arc and rotation kinda happen anyway. thnx for the help.
@@russbrown9286 the drop is simply there to organize the trunk to the ball. Drop too much and the trunk starts to point inside the ball. We want the trunk’s axis perpendicular to the ball be delivery
❤ hi Coach this is coming up and clearly explain my thinking about force direction, a lot of coaches try to pull up the grip to hit the ball and it will need to time how much to go down and how much and when to go up. That will be too hard under pressure . This is gold ❤
Elite lesson for sure! What’s the lower body lesson video that especially compliments this force direction gold mine?! This combo should remedy the majority of typical golf swing issues imo.
Riley - This is a wonderful further explanation of the online lesson I just got from you. It was almost like you were talking to me. For the first time I get that the purpose of the hip drop is to get your spine at the requisite angle to allow you to make a "level" hit with your arms. I now have a much better understanding of what I am trying to accomplish. Looking forward to working on this tomorrow. Also, thanks for adding the search function to your TH-cam page.
Interesting epiphany. I always thought of the upper body drop as a shallowing move. You look at it as getting a level hit. Voila! Two ways of saying the same thing. Definitely positive reinforcement. Thank you.
@@elitegolfschools I took some practice balls out to a nearby sports field this AM and tested your Force Direction concept against my head full of theories about why I am a terrible golfer. Grab a coffee and have a seat. I found out; 1. You don't have to lift your arms. Who Knew! 2. The target is your target. A bit obtuse so; The swing force is along your target line both on the back and forward swing; 3. My early extension wasn't. It was actually a late upper body drop. 4. Your body rotation is not made better by thinking about how much to turn. When you finish your coffee, take a bow!
I agree. Good content but could have been put together better. Lot of rambling going on for most of the video. Tell the audience what you’re doing, demonstrate it, sum it up at the end in easy to communicate steps.
@@redstone5149 we try to have a nice blend of longer videos (around 15-20 minutes) and shorter (6-9 minutes) and brief (shorts, TikTok, and insta (60 seconds or less) for different learning styles and preferences 🙏🙏
I like the pacing so I don’t have to hit pause after each instruction. I can get a few practice swings in while you are elaborating. Any faster and I would have to put down the club, walk to the phone and pause. Keep it as is. The pros can just run it at 2x speed. 20 minutes is not too long for a new concept.
Great video… question… we’ve learned in this video the swing is not vertical… but is it truly horizontal? Is it not a combination of both ( normal / perpendicular ) to the plane your spine sets in the drop?
Hogan said (1940) he wanted he wanted to get the' driver parallel to the ground sooner' for a gradual incline followed by a levelish through swing before rising into the finish. I love how you qualified this point with the ax analogy. His more levelish bswing path evinced a more SUSTAINED horizontal vector --compared with your modeling--which ultimately matched up (through transition) with his LOW inside right ankle (per eversion) which is arguably THE cornerstone of his singular (ELITE) motion. It's unfortunate that GOATA so glibly pontificates as to optimal (ELITE) employment of anatomy...per their fetish of a HIGH INSIDE ANKLE. In general, the multiplanar spring matrices in the foot are recipients of forces that devolve upon the foot(from above) in such a way that the outer part is tasked with a stabilizing agency and is the lowest part of the foot. The inner, higher part which is the MOBILIZING element will 'fall' into place as it is pressed into service. My tiresome sermon ties into your theme of 'direction of force' which inextricably is linked to structure. Thanks for providing a forum for eccentrics like myself to chime in! I'm titilated to take in such depth of content. GODDABLESS!
@@dcolum23 loads of ways, this is a mapping type of video but we have a fully immersive subscription model called X Factor that you will find in our bio or we also offer virtual and in person coaching if you’re interested 🙏
Fascinating. This is one of those videos I’ll need to save and watch a few times to really understand completely. Understanding and executing are two different things. It will take some practice and I like the slow motion training. Does your ball position change at all? I’m thinking not but think I should ask anyhow.
If I could start all over again, this should be the first video ppl learn about. So many ppl including myself thinks golf is and up and down swing. Swing at the ball. But it’s about moving mass and level hit. Learning all the techniques but with believing it should be up and down does not work.
Mind blown! Here is a question. If one map is swing down and body moves opposite direction to counter it (down) when you think of forward swing does body move back / away from target? Just curious all the feels … thanks!
In some regards yes, and you’ll see that from larger energy swings (driver). We discuss this in our driver video discussing the three main forces in the golf swing as well as our driver vs wedge swing video 🙏❤️

A really interesting take on the so-called squat move advocated by many top golf coaches. However, your student is clearly a very accomplished golfer who was able to understand the concept and moreover, put it into practice remarkably quickly. How would a 10-18 handicapper fare I wonder?
The “student” here… one of the reasons I am so accomplished is because I’ve been working on these concepts with Coach Riley for over a decade. The concepts apply, whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced 🙏
It would be helpful to see each of you, swinging the way you’re instructing us viewers to swing from a down-the-line view and a face-on view in real speed and in slow motion. We would see more of the swing you’re demonstrating and talking about and so it would be easier to emulate it through mirroring.
When you talk about shoulder flexion causing the arms to rise, does the scapula rise as well? Or does the scapula stay down in a neutral position and just the arms go up?
When showing how to apply lateral force in the backswing you advise TJ to rotate and then move the COM (or head of the axe) laterally but in the forward swing your focus appears to be on an initial level movement of the arms (rather than the COM/axe head) and letting the body respond/support the motion. In the event that I have this right - should we focus on applying force to the COM in the forward swing as well. Seems to me that this would help the club whip through impact. ?????
Yes great question! And most definitely we need to apply force in the COM of the club through the strike. Just be mindful of directionality of force when doing so ❤
@ as you really drive that momentum around with the squat and hip turn what happens to hands? Anything conscious- seems you don’t roll them. It looks very square and straight which seems to counter the rotational forces. Prob just my understanding. Great video!
@ gotcha! The reason the hands curve in the swing is because of the trunk’s rotation… they fire across the midline, however the midline is constantly rotating based on the chest’s turning 👍
Makes sense 👍🏼 In the past when I started golfing, I used my arm and hip to drive at the ball which is not the current swing technique. The arm should drop down first and hip rotate at P6 …
My tendency, as an older golfer is to turn through the ball with shoulders that are too flat. Your video on hub path was really helpful. But, I'm not sure how that feel meshes with this one. I would love more content aimed at applying these concepts to those of us that have body styles completely opposite to TJ!
Another fantastic video ! Your explanation with this topic and all your videos gives us beginners and seasoned golfers great insight .. Riley , you posted a short video on the topic of squeeze cut shots . Would you recommend that movement for high handicappers like myself , or follow more of the sequencing video and incorporate this force direction motion ? So much amazing content but all can be confusing when learning the swing ! Thanks again for your generosity with your EliteGoldSchool videos !
What an awesome concept! Quick question though - how can we 'send the club to camera' while maintaining connection? When I try this I feel as though my arms become too disconnected from the rest of my body
Love the game but im a lefty learning right hand clubs and its taking ages to get any power and slicing and dicing so I gave up. I still go to the range to work on my speed and accuracy.
@@elitegolfschools I'm not sure actually. might be a grip problem or sequence issue. but I find it hard to rotate the shoulders and chest to get a clean backswing and shallow out. I am getting better but I need a ton of practice to even play with friends as they get 70-80's in score. but thanks for the help. I guess its the nature of the game.
This is awesome. I have been doing some of this naturally following your other tips, but a few questions I have is a) how much (if at all) do we want to feel like we are holding onto the face or delaying the release (maybe I mean keep stable) b) are we also swinging the center of mass the same going forward as we do the level hit, similar to how we were throwing it towards the camera in the backswing?
Took this to the course and the zip through the ball was amazing. Even with driver although did loose a couple right but complete operator error. Old “don’t go left” reaction crept in. Do you have a force direction driver session?
Under playing pressure l couldnt get the club back far enough to add trail side throw. I just went back to my spinout low pull hook. I'm a believer but need a drill to identify when l block the back swing. Next I'll try to focus on the bounce back when the club reaches maximum height to see if that works under game pressure. If there is another drill to achieve that position I'm all ears.
Is there a video with more explanation of that level follow through? This video explained and helped so much and would like more understanding on how to hit more level that hitting “down”.
You are so awesome 🤜🤛 But one question, and it's more of a general question. How do you create speed and a free float during the swing? I feel so much tension in my body during the swing and therefore start to work with the whole body (read hips)
Just FYI, your videos , apparently, aren't tagged as "Golf Swing" for TH-cam. When I open TH-cam there are selections at the top: Music, Comedy, Golf Swing, etc... If Yoone of your videos is displayed when I open TH-cam, it disappears if I click "Golf Swing". Click "Golf Swing" and Elite Golf School videos are never displayed. Just a heads-up, maybe there's something you can do to change this. Your probably missing a lot of views. Good luck, and keep the Elite instruction coming. Thanks
Now I understand, not to lift up but swing back image. But I have a detailed question. Can u give a optimal hand level of active swing back in clock system? More and more active back swing like to the 10 o’clock hand level will give me more power but it will ruin my consistency. I guess active back swing thought to 8 o’clock level is fine. What is your best suggestion. Thank you.😂(I asked u this with hand level because it is easiest way to describe active swing back level. I do swing with your chest engine system😅)
Thoughts on someone trying this with a longer wingspan than height? Always been told my swing has to be more verticle because of this. I'm also 5 foot 6 lol
When this video first came out up until now I totally didn't get it. For some reason it's now a light bulb moment. Question, does this concept of force direction apply to the Driver swing?
Another great vid. Question....the drop sounds like it occurs as the backswing is over (is that technically P5?)...are you dropping and then staying level until AFTER the hit before you extend back up? I presume if you try to push up after dropping while hitting or as hitting then unless you time it perfectly you wind up either topping or just having a form of early extension resulting in a fat/chunk before the ball, depending on when you're extending? Meaning, it seems as if you're getting to the top of the backswing, dropping and as you say swinging like an Axe hit into a tree but remaining in that position until you're through the ball where the body can then extend up. Is this correct?
@@mitchgrossbach1432 extension happens because of rotation through the spiral. That rotation will tow the player to finish and extend them if driven effectively
This is a fantastic "map". One question: in other videos you have discussed the importance of ulnar deviation in unlocking the necessary lowering of the clubhead plane. Any tips on how to recognize/match whether ulnar or spine perpendicularity to the ball (to unlock this arm pattern) is the right place to start/focus?

You guys are incredible. Wow… I’m working on some more rotational or horizontal force swings but I’m a jumper for sure, how do you hit draws with this pattern? Would be a great video explaining only your system and cuts or draws and not comparing to vertical extension patterns because it starts to muddy the water for us youtubers i think lol but anyway thank you guys so so much! You are absolutely the best!
i was able to try it just doing some chipping and so far it seems quite valid. i'm now thinking of the golf action as a bit more linear and not up and down so much. like you say the swing arc and rotation kinda happen anyway. thnx for the help.
Fantastic! Keep us posted on you progress please!
Great insight and visual explanation of how the arms should work in your backswing and downswing. This actually helps me a lot !
Glad it was helpful!
Great video as usual !! Love this map, but how do you know how much to drop your body down? Couldn't he hit fat shots bending down too much ?
@@russbrown9286 the drop is simply there to organize the trunk to the ball. Drop too much and the trunk starts to point inside the ball. We want the trunk’s axis perpendicular to the ball be delivery

I been trying to figure this out and I’m nit saying I got it but this is the best explanation. Awesome I can experiment with this. Thank you
Riley - This is a wonderful further explanation of the online lesson I just got from you.
Glad it was helpful!
Interesting epiphany. I always thought of the upper body drop as a shallowing move. You look at it as getting a level hit.
Voila! Two ways of saying the same thing. Definitely positive reinforcement.

@@elitegolfschools I took some practice balls out to a nearby sports field this AM and tested your Force Direction concept against my head full of theories about why I am a terrible golfer.
Grab a coffee and have a seat. I found out;
1. You don't have to lift your arms. Who Knew!
2. The target is your target. A bit obtuse so; The swing force is along your target line both on the back and forward swing;

A bit dense.
Thank you, anyone teaching this in Northern California..awesome backswing explanation and visuals..very enjoyable video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video… question… we’ve learned in this video the swing is not vertical… but is it truly horizontal? Is it not a combination of both ( normal / perpendicular ) to the plane your spine sets in the drop?
The hit will be perpendicular to the spine for hitters. The more a player drops the more this happens in the swing
GODDABLESS!

Fascinating. This is one of those videos I’ll need to save and watch a few times to really understand completely. Understanding and executing are two different things. The “hitting” sensation level and across the body is how we control low point 👍

Thanks for the input 👍
You are most welcome.
When you talk about shoulder flexion causing the arms to rise, does the scapula rise as well? Or does the scapula stay down in a neutral position and just the arms go up?
Elevation and depression of the scap does happen to some degree but definitely prefer most players not actively perform that act 🙏
Just be mindful of directionality of force when doing so ❤
What are you doing with hands they seem to go up and back on downswing.
@@billpierce9203 sorry I don’t understand the question???
@ as you really drive that momentum around with the squat and hip turn what happens to hands? Anything conscious- seems you don’t roll them. It looks very square and straight which seems to counter the rotational forces. Prob just my understanding. Great video!
@ gotcha! The reason the hands curve in the swing is because of the trunk’s rotation… they fire across the midline, however the midline is constantly rotating based on the chest’s turning 👍
Makes sense 👍🏼
In the past when I started golfing, I used my arm and hip to drive at the ball which is not the current swing technique. The arm should drop down first and hip rotate at P6 …
👍
Good info. Need cliff notes version.
@@rdk3996 lol! Yes, deep dive huh?! Any particular questions that we can answer?

Can still work, just depends upon where you’re sending force 👍
My tendency, as an older golfer is to turn through the ball with shoulders that are too flat. Your video on hub path was really helpful. But, I'm not sure how that feel meshes with this one.
I would love more content aimed at applying these concepts to those of us that have body styles completely opposite to TJ!
Yes, great idea 👍
When you are in posture makesure your bellybutton is pointing at the ball . Focus on this and try a few swings.

Trying to get the adductor part in this video while having both hands on the club. Does the lead arm really work like a Hinge from the elbow?
More so the shoulder joints, but yes
I like the idea I’m gonna play around with it. But why do most pro players say drop the hands then rotate? Essentially woudnt that be the same thing?
@@WhitePhosphorus1939 I would really suggest watching our newest video titled the perfect release. Goes into this concept in depth 🙏🙏
This is awesome. I have been doing some of this naturally following your other tips, but a few questions I have is
a) how much (if at all) do we want to feel like we are holding onto the face or delaying the release (maybe I mean keep stable)
b) are we also swinging the center of mass the same going forward as we do the level hit, similar to how we were throwing it towards the camera in the backswing?
For many it feels almost the opposite of “holding the face.” But it really does depend on the pattern in particular
Crazy detail-- great stuff!!!!!

Took this to the course and the zip through the ball was amazing. Even with driver although did loose a couple right but complete operator error. Old “don’t go left” reaction crept in.
Do you have a force direction driver session?
Same concept with driver!
Riley....would you sugggest flatter lies to use on irons ??
Absolutely!! Most of our players have clubs that are flat relative to what manufacturers’ neutral is
6:47 that was really dope to see and I knew immediately what you were getting at.

It will definitely depend on the amount of energy… take a look at energy of a wedge compared to driver. They look fairly different from one another 👍
