- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - The Hollywood Bowl (Rippled and Spalted)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large piece of spalted and rippled Holly into a bowl.
When woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the thumbs-up button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button or bell icon.

The way you take an "interesting" piece of wood that most people would throw away and turn it into something beautiful still amazes me. Thank you.

Spalting is such a beautiful and natural feature and then along you come and make it even better. You are a master.
Just setting the natural beauty free.

Not many youtube turners retrue the bowl once they put it on the chuck. Great job and you have a new subscriber.
Cheers James. Im actually a full time turner, this TH-cam thing is an excuse to have some fun and keep my love of woodturning alive. It gets pretty boring making the same bowl 1000 times.
Thanks for following along. I hope I can continue to entertain you 😊👍🏻

Bella forma e striature stupende.
Have you ever made lidded boxes before. Because if you still those 2 pieces left you could use one of them to make a lidded box. And it would look very beautiful.
Hi Margaret, yeah I collect these corners and then spend a day every couple months roughing them into box blanks or cutting veneers from them.
You are a fantastic wood turner and you turned a fantastic looking bowl. I love it. I wish I could be there to watch turn this piece of wood into a bowl.
😊
Gorgeous bowl, Jack. You made the most out of that piece of wood. Great job. 👍😊🙂❤️🪵

Another fabulous bowl, what is your plans for the other pieces
I have a few ideas lined up. Il get them up here as soon as possible. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Absolutely gorgeous what kind of stain did you use please
Hey radar, the dye was mixed from water based pigment dyes but diluted heavily.
Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
Beautiful. You did an excellent job with this wood. I would like to know you finish products as well please.
Hey Doug, thanks for watching.
For finishing this bowl I first used a dilution of water based dye, when dry and sanded back this helps bring out the figured ripple and swirls of the union, I then sealed with a very weak shellac sealer and topped with a homemade carnauba wax paste 😊👍🏻
I love to purchase this piece of art , pls contact me

I thought it was beautiful when you put that colored finish on it but then I was shocked when you sanded it! But when you finished it again, it was incredibly better with the more clear finish! Wow! What were the two finishes and wood type, please?
Thanks for watching joe, I’m glad you enjoyed it at all it’s stages. That's a beauty, for sure. Curious what finish you used.
I was going to ask the same thing! Almost looked like a really thin stain or strong tea before the friction polish.

Beautiful piece! What do you use as a final finish after what I presume was a sealer, if I may ask. It gives it a beautiful shine to the piece

@@JackMackWoodturning well I must say your homemade finish does a beautiful job.....or is it that you do a beautiful job. Lol. Either way, a very nice job. Thanks.
Hey jack, what model bandsaw is that? I need to do some very similar cutting
Hi mate, its a jet, I believe it’s the largest of the 3 sizes of this model that they sell, I can’t remember the modle number.
It’s okay but if I’m honest it has some flaws. Some of its design is more for the look than for practicality. It’s does what I need it too but had to modify a few parts to make it more friendly for woodturning operations.
What was that sanding sealer?
Hi Karl, thanks for watching. t’s just a home made shellac solution.
This is Woodturning 101 anyone can turn a bowl let’s see what you can do with pieces you cut off
You will soon. Cheers for watching.
Hi: this wood is maple, right?
Hey , this is holly
@@JackMackWoodturning patting myself on my own back for correctly guessing holly!
La pieza bien ejecutada, el acabado color, a mi entender, no.
