River of Garbage in the Indian capital of Delhi - appaling reality of urban India

  • A drain that has been completely covered with garbage in the Taimoor Nagar area of Delhi. This is the sad urban reality of the New India. While the plush diplomatic and business areas get cleaned up and look shiny, the back of beyond gets ignored and everyone piles up the filth. After all it's the good old case of the commons - not in my backyard!

People here don't have many alternatives to dispose of their household wastes. I don't know how it is done in other countries, but in most Indian cities and towns, people don't just have any other option than to simply dump their garbage on any empty plot of land or water body. It happens in towns, it happens in villages. It happens in even the capital city of the country.
In the West, I guess, there are people employed by the city administration to carry out the job of collecting the household garbage by going door to door. Is it so? It doesn't happen here, or at least in majority of the cities and towns. Except for the richest parts of the cities and towns, there are no vehicles to collect household wastes. It has been months since I have to see any garbage collecting vehicle in my neighborhood. Even if we put the garbage in dustbins, we don't know when we can dispose of it. The nearest dumping site where I can dump my garbage to be collected by the town sanitation workers would be approximately 500 meters. So, if I want to get rid of my trash, I would have to walk 500 m with two separate dustbins for recyclable and non-recyclable items. Too much effort.
Plus, us Indians have an abysmal civic sense. The same Indians when emigrate to the West, behave like any honorable citizen should behave, but when in India they'll spit on the streets, pee beside roads, will honk unnecessarily, won't follow traffic rules, throw trash on the roads after eating. I gues it is, when in Rome, do as Romans do. This, I think, is more important reason than any other why I think Indian cities are so filthy and unpleasant to look at.

A simple way to get rid of hard plastic waste is to have a machine to grind the plastic into tiny pieces and to use it as a base under roads when construction of roads is being undertaken , a better solution than land fill also a bounty should be put on plastic so poor people can earn money collecting it and charge manufacturers 2% to pay for the collection .

Why make the manufacturers pay 2%? How about you and i... the consumers who are trashing the planet with our garbage pay a 2% sales tax on anything that is packaged in plastic to fund the cleanup? Then in the free market some manufacturers might offer their products in plastic-less packaging to lower cost to customers in the attempt to corner more sales. If successful you would see far less plastics used in packaging... and instead of the heavy hand of government it would be the free market.

One of the first things AI Robots are gonna tackle is picking up, sorting, organizing, storing and retreive things.. in particular, and especially our garbage for recycling. Advances in 3D printing will then use recycled raw materials to most inexpensively manufacture what we want on demand. This combination is going to transform our world of waste and trash.

They need to get a waste-to-energy incinerator there (the government of Delhi), collect all the garbage and store it, compacted, in a warehouse where the incinerator is for use in the incinerator. On the spaces where the garbage was, reforest with native plant life to help offset the toxic effects of the incinerator (that, although it will have filters, will nonetheless emit some pollution). The incinerator will provide energy to those inhabitants, making their lives easier and allow them more leisure to pursue interests and not just scrabble, suffering to survive. Financial incentives for those who pick up fuel for the waste-to-energy incinerator will motivate inhabitants to clean up their own communities and keep it all running.
