I have an 11 inch 2018 iPad Pro and I genuinely can’t see myself upgrading for at least 2 more years. I don’t run into performance issues, especially on well optimised apps like procreate, and I get promotion + 2nd gen Apple Pencil support. Right now they are $350 or less used on eBay and I would honestly say for most people that’s a much better deal than the M1 iPad Air, despite the M1 chip - especially for digital artists.
100% like he said, you never really see iPads underperform! I have the same ipad as you and got it from the refurbished site for around the price of the air and i still love the power of this thing. I am waiting on the next design change tbh
Yeah ive had my ipad (same model as yours) for 2 years and performs very well for uni student use. Maybe battery life has gone down but still very good. My experience mirrors yours
None of the top tech reviewers mentioned that in addition to the M1 chip we also get double the amount of RAM with the new IPad Air 2022 vs the 2020 model, for the same price. That is why we love Dave2d ❤️
I went with a $450 refurbished 2018 11" iPad Pro. It is still a great performer, the battery health on my particular device is above 95%, the 120Hz looks and feels amazing, and the quad speakers are bonus.
@@rohan_snj Software yes, because both are the exact same chip just the Z is unlocked with a extra GPU core A12X, A12Z. It makes no difference in real world usage today and both are still crazy fast. It would depend on the screen size, the 12.9 is more paper sized if you are going to use it with the apple pencil to take notes.
@@rohan_snj get a 12.9” pro. I had an iPad Pro throughout my college career and I being able to take notes on the larger 12.9” screen was so much nicer. I still have my 2018 pro and it hasn’t slowed down since the day I got it. My original 2015 pro is still holding up if not slightly bent from a fall down the stairs.
@@rohan_snj I used to have an 11". it was nice and portable -- and light.. but overtime I wanted a bigger screen . switched to a 12.9"; heavier but I prefer the bigger screen size for writing/ taking notes. Glad I made the switch. But do note it is going to add a bit more weight.
I think the iPads with M1 Chips are just severely held back by iPadOS. I just don't think Apple wants to compromise their MacBook sales due to making iPadOS too functional, which is unfortunate.
The iPad is a tablet and it's great at being a tablet. Not every device has to do everything. This is why Android tablets suck. They try to do everything and aren't good at anything.
Apple has told everyone that it will never run macOS and that it is up to developers to make more pro apps and most of these are worried that they would lose customers by doing this. So it is apparent that your wish is not gonna happen in the medium term so maybe best to start thinking of it as Apple promotes it. They give us the best tablet they can with the best chip, and why anyone would complain about that is mind-boggling, other than trolling. That extra headroom is great fro future-proofing; as Apple says people hold onto their tablets on average 5+ years. So maybe the time to stop complaining about this and thank Apple that they give us the M1 when they could have given us a less performing chip. I am sure every Android fan out there would love an M1 clone in their tablets!
Bullshit. Apple is not doing less because they don't want to compromise their Macbook sales, Apple is doing what they're doing because it is a goddamn iPad and people want that. People DONt want the iPad to be a Mac. Apple has both categories for people that need a specific device for their needs. Stop acting like the iPad is held back just because a Mac can do other stuff and ignore everything that Macs can't that iPads can do much better.
This iPad Air (like the one before it) is great, as long as you stick to the base model. If you need more than 64GB of storage, the iPad Pro is the only sensible option. Assuming the 256GB iPad Air vs the base model iPad Pro: for $50 you get pro motion, face ID, quad speakers, thunderbolt and a better screen.
@@whitemuffin8650 You are right. That's the single scenario where the iPad Air is still the better option, if you don't care for the other Pro features.
Im debating that myself. On Amazon the 256gb air 5 and base 11 inch pro are actually the same price. The only reason I would would really want the pro though is quad speakers. Idk if thats worth halfing the storage. Also note the Air 5 has a slightly bigger battery, plus lack of quad speakers, slightly smaller screen, and 120hz should give it a battery life edge over the pro on paper. Hopefully we can see battery drain tests soon.
Bought my 2 daughters an iPad Air each for Christmas just gone by. With the same iteration out since 2020 and knowing the new iPad airs were going to be out now I was sceptical about my decision. After listening to this review and knowing my kids really wouldn't be making the extra use of the M1 chip, you've put my mind at rest and im happy with my purchase. Their iPads are insane pieces of tech im glad they get to have, just, nothing worse than buying tech at these kind of price points for it to be old and obsolete models mere months later. Thanks Dave!
I still have the 2017 10.5" iPad Pro and I'm still quite satisfied with it. I tried out the 2020 11"iPad Pro but ended up selling it because I liked the home button and touch iD on the older one. good thing I didn't sell or trade in my 2017 iPad. lol I'll have to see what the 2022 Pros would bring to the table. 🧐 5 years for an upgrade ain't too bad at all.
I thought the iPad Air 4 already made the 11” Pro pretty much redundant but this just takes it a step further. $150 less (Going by the 256GB Wi-Fi only models’ pricing here) for most of the experience is a total no-brainer, especially with the M1 inside. I can live without ProMotion and prefer Touch ID to Face ID so the Air is the way to go for me personally.
on Amazon EU the 256gb iPad Air is 20€ more expensive than the 128gb iPad Pro so I don’t know about that Apple is probably betting on selling a lot of 64gb models because those are selling for 680€ at the moment
Great review. For me, the best case for the iPad Pro is the 12.9" version because it's just so big. I just got my wife a 1st Gen 12.9" iPad Pro (along with a 1st Gen Apple Pencil) for exactly that reason. The 12.9" screen, regardless of how much power the device has, is so useful because it ends up being about the same size as a sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper. This is ideal for other applications like digital sheet music, which I intend to borrow her device to use. Honestly, that old iPad Pro from 2015 still has plenty of power.
Actually here is a fix for your problem with orientation. Enable Guided access mode, and the power button will be useless unless you pressed 3 times in row in quick pace (which what you will do when exit the game) I had to use it but for different reason. Some games I play need to swipe from bottom to up, and iOS think I want to close the app and either close it, or bring the home bar (and the game do not receive this swipe).
I still use my iPad Air 4 daily and it still runs smoothly... never had problems with it and I use it a lot with procreate, streaming content and also Pokémon Unite. if you are on budget even that is a great device to pick. iPads are weird cause they are all pretty good tablets. my wife has a 2018 pro model and has no problem at all. pro motion still looks miles better than what my screen looks like even if it's older. get what you need for the time you need it. future proofing with tech is imposible. every year new stuff comes out with way better features. probably next year we will get m1 pro and pro motion on an air and so on...
Hopefully the build and specs are an indicator for the MacBook airs later this year - I think they could become the ultimate hyper portable laptop for a lot of use cases that don’t require tons of power (ie just emails, TH-cam, spreadsheets, etc)
iPads never underperformed even when they use to Have A series silicone, now with M1 I can bet it will keep on performing for like next 10 years cause there is no app that can take full potential of M1 and I doubt there will be any in the future, or else the differentiators between a MacBook and iPad will be lost.
Apple’s roadmap is to make iPads as compatible with macs as they can as this helps developers and allows greater integration. Although the A15 chip would have still worked okay, I think Apple knows that the future will need greater continuity and hence the plan to get iPads on the M chips. For the same price getting a chip 50% faster sounds like a win-win so have no idea why anyone would complain. Ask me if I would prefer my Tab S7+ to be 70% faster and I would say, yes please, and ask another 99 people and you will have 100%. Do not complain about getting more for no extra cost.
The real differentiator between the two is MacOS I would say. If you're not an artist/visual-oriented professional, iPadOS doesn't cut it. Most data science tools, for example, aren't on iPad. The iPad version of Excel is a joke. I tried using the iPad for two straight years before giving up and buying the base Macbook Air.
@@johnthwong What I have been saying for a while. Amongst a niche techie community on YT the desire for more "pro" apps is higher than outside that bubble, where 90% plus of tablet users do not care a jot. Developers see this and to protect their business model the tablet versions of their apps either are restricted or do not exist. Blaming the iPad is dumb, as it was a de facto tablet and it does that great. Apple and a few developers have created more "pro" apps to flex it a bit, but the truth is that it is a tablet at heart. So I use a tablet and laptop combo. When I am out and about doing my report after every job, I use something like Drafts. When I get back to base, that is synced with my laptop and I then feed it int Excel sheets. Asking the iPad to be universal when desktop Windows machines cannot do tablet stuff half as well is seemingly one-sided.
I have the ipad air 4 and I mainly use it for drawing. it handled 2gb clip studio paint file smoothly. M1 is a great jump, but I'm satisfied with what ipad air 4 can do
Glad you mentioned the ram, that's the biggest reason this iPad will last forever. 8gigs is going to allow for a lot of updates to come to this machine.
Watching this on a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro. No complaints love this device highly recommend. The only thing that has ever tempted me to want to upgrade was the mini-led on the newer iPad Pro. I am jealous of the colors of the Air, but a skin works too.
@@chickenpasta7359 gotcha. I was just watching TH-cam and I noticed there was less fingerprint glare on the new one but it wasn’t enough of a difference to spend the $1000 so I returned it and am waiting for the next one to release lol
@@bridgeradams8491 yea same tbh such a good value for the years I’ve gotten out of this. It used to be my moms but she cracked it really bad, got a new one and gave me that one which I repaired for $500 which isn’t bad considering it has 256gb of storage and cellular and it included a new battery in the repair lol
The good thing about iPads is that you will generally get to keep it for years (assuming you arent a power user). Its a very high value for money. It also might be the only electronic gadget where I start at the most expensive and work down. Most of the time I start from the bottom.
I always get confused when youtubers describe something famously good as “infamous” Infamous means “well known for some bad quality” which is not true about the M1 chip.
My biggest issue with the Air 5 are the storage options, relative to the pricing. 64GB for $600 is a nonstarter for most. If Apple wants these things to be considered potential laptop replacements, the storage options should align with the Macbook and PC market. How many laptops can we find on the market, where the base configuration is 64 GB? Regarding expected support length, I'd expect Apple to support this tablet, and specifically the M1 for a decade, at least. I don't dispute Dave, when he asserts that Apples IOS updates are heavily tied to available RAM,. However, there already exists some anecdotal evidence which challenges this notion, as seen in the Ipad Air 2. The Air 2 was released in 2014 and comes with 2GB of memory. It is still receiving updates to this day, which will continue throughout Ipad OS 15. Although the air 2 will not receive Ipad OS 16, Apple will nonetheless provide at least two to three years os security patch, which amounts to a decade of end to end support, on a very old Ipad. Great review, as always!
The Air 5 is the best value iPad for me. I only use it to browse the web, read magazines, and watch movies. Maybe editing the occasional word document as well. I have no use for Pro Motion or any of the other Pro features. I have tons of cloud space so I have no need for lots of internal storage. The Air 5 will serve my needs for years to come.
The iPad Pro would still be the choice for me. The 120hz display is more important to me than the added storage at around $100 less for the 256 gb iPad Air.
@@truthseeker6804 interesting at my place i could get both at the same price (The Pro with 128 or the Air with 256) i think imma go for the pro bc i wanna draw and the 120hertz would be amazing
I had a 10th gen iPad th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
I had an iPad 7th gen that was enough for me. Had it for a couple of years , got a free iPad Pro 12.9 and I think I might not ever upgrade. I really just use it for media. The sound is great on the iPad Pro m1
Honestly, I usually watch your videos after Marques and I am becoming more and more inclined toward you since I feel his videos are becoming too concise and brief but the details in your videos are precisely sufficient. Keep going!
I really wanted to upgrade my iPad, but man, even after 3 years, my iPad Air 3 is still running so good without noticeable drop in performance. This M1 ipad air really tempted me.
The thing is, since they released the M1 this year, by the time you decide to retire your device, we'll have something even better than this, and this power will be available at a lesser price aswell. No pressure to buy it just cause it released cause it ain't going anywhere but up from here
I recently upgraded my 2020 iPad Air to get a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro. I have no regrets (though I admit for a split second i was mildly bothered) - I have the beautiful gigantic screen and I love it. Still - for people considering the 11" Pro, this might be a more than worthy option. Who doesn't like saving money??
Random people keep saying that, but you are talking from a prosumers view and that makes up a tiny part of the iPad market, probably 1-5%. Developers are not too interested as they already have their pro apps on macOS, and Apple will keep adding features as and when they can get them optimised. This complaint is a niche argument as Apple has 100% said the iPad is complimentary and will NEVER replace the mac.
@@truthseeker6804 really? Like these (th-cam.com/video/wC5lBQiXooE/w-d-xo.html) for one, and two maybe a more desktop-like experience like dex on samsung but better
@@urmomstraight cool stuff, yes some of those features would be cool to have, and some would be great for other people like multi users. But none is really ground breaking for me, I’m the only user of my tablet.
The speaker issue is very similar to the webcam issue that has plagued iPads for years; the device just shouldn’t be portrait orientation by default anymore. Yes, I use my iPad in portrait for reading. But a solid 80% of the time I’m grabbing the thing in landscape, covering the faceID camera with my hand, and blocking the speakers. Landscape iPads are far overdue.
I’ve the 2017 Pro. Loving that thing for note taking w pencil. No performance issues at all. Id advise students to look at it, it’s half price compared to 2018. The old pencil really isn’t a big deal, it’s battery lasts a week
I recently bought a HP Spectre x360 14 assuming I would be doing all my main work on that device as it has desktop apps and runs windows. But recently I bought the magic keyboard for my iPad Air 4th gen and it really has made the iPad into a full on computer and i can do about 90% of stuff I would usually do on my windows laptop now on my iPad due to having this keyboard and mouse. Now my laptop sits on my desk plugged into an external monitor for stuff like heavy multitasking and office apps but whenever I leave the house e.g. school, i love taking my iPad for its battery life. Size and portability as well as apple ecosystem features such as airdropping photos from my phone and personal hotspot instant on. Only few complains of this iPad is, the speakers don’t sound as good, they are very respectable but would love quad speakers. Black levels aren’t any where as good as laptop. And my laptop is also LCD. I think this is an iPad Air issue as iPad Pro doesnt suffer as much. A flashlight for scanning documents on the rear camera. I use goodnotes a lot and use my iPad for school work so just a convenience feature. 128gb storage would have been the sweet spot but i got 64gb and paid for icloud+ as it integrates better with my laptop. I do wish the screen was promotion but i dont really miss it on an iPad for what i use it for and considering the iPad itself costs only $600 its a pretty good deal. Ofc once you add the keyboard and Apple Pencil it gets to £1000 quickly but totally worth it for my use case
I skipped 4 m1 iPad air videos before this but Dave thumbnails are enticing and makes anyone click the video even if they actually are not interested in the video

I also noticed the "iPad" wording on the back now reads "iPad Air", I didn’t even notice this small detail until I saw an article that mentioned it, otherwise, it looks ever so similar to its predecessor
I know you mentioned that 60hz is fine but that would a deal breaker for me as my last few phones are high refresh as well as my gaming monitors so I have gotten really sensitive to display lag as a result and any new device would have to be at least 90hz. Otherwise, this is pretty slick.
Tbh I used the 10.5 iPad Pro with 120 Hz and my phone with 60 Hz for a couple of years and it didn't feel wrong. Maybe the change of display size and OS made me think of the devices as really different things or "activities".
@@carlosreyesf19 I'm sure it varies from person to person but I have the Pixel 6 which is 90hz, Razer Phone 2 which is 120hz, a gaming laptop which is 144hz and a gaming monitor which is 144hz so my main devices for the last few years have all been high refresh. Aww man…. When it comes to tablets I‘ve always been the Windows/Surface guy. I’ve had a couple of Surface devices and never had any real issues with them. But nowadays I actually don’t need a Windows Tablet with a Laptop Intel CPU. I just need a Tablet that is snappy in the OS and has great Pen Support. And the iPad Air with M1 really makes me consider doing the switch… I’m already somewhat in the Apple ecosystem with an iPhone, Watch and AirPods and having my Tablet be in that ecosystem really would be beneficial.. Dang it Apple…
I think the iPad is a no brainer for a tablet. I still struggle to see Surface as a proper tablet experience, more of a Windows 2in1. You get more software supported with Windows, but that only matters if this is your laptop/desktop replacement and you specifically need something with a desktop OS - that said they’re not very powerful running Windows either with Intel in a tablet chassis with no cooling. That aside this is just a better product.
@@User-cb4jm I've actually used my Surface Pro 4 for studying. At that time I used it for Visual Studio, MSSQL and stuff like that. Plus the fact that it has the kickstand build in and the magnetic keyboard (which at this time was an exclusive for surface) was just super convenient. And the Pen has an actual button that you can configure to do a whole bunch of stuff is also something I would've missed then. But now I use a Laptop for all of that and the iPad is more and more compelling.
@@Mc_Fly if you are only looking for casual pen use (not work-related), I'd personally push you towards the base iPad+pencil. It just looks rather dated, but other than that it shouldn't be hindering performance in most apps, I don't see the need to spend 80% more for slightly better speakers, type-C port, brightness & design, not to mention the 2nd gen Pencil also costs 30% more than the 1st gen one. Or maybe look at the Tab S7+ or Tab S8, you get the 120Hz & Pen included in the box, not to mention 128GB base storage which is also expandable!
@@User-cb4jm Surface is definitely a 2 in 1 but that's what makes it great. It's literally the opposite of what people want in the iPad, the ability to have either. Surfaces have their cons, like basically no app store, but the ability to manage a heavy workflow then lie down and goof around like watch TH-cam is invaluable. And workflow is light-years aheads of what it is in either MacOS or iPadOS, the organization of open windows and apps is genius compared to the mess on Mac or app switching on iPad.
You know what Dave we really love you! The way you are just not selling this ipad we love it how you said real life facts like an artist can use like any screen to create his work...
Great video! Pretty sure I want to go for the Air, but I'm concerned about the storage. How big is the OS? And how much usable storage would there be on a 64gb? Majority of things I plan to use it for are cloud based thankfully, although I would probably keep a few movies or episodes of something available for journeys without an internet connection. Would the 64gb have enough space for apps, the odd game and media? Or am I better off bumping up to the the 11inch iPad pro 128gb over the air 256gb? Thank you to anyone who can help 😊
Getting the ipad air. Waiting on delivery. I plan to use it for art, but Ive never had a 120ghz display so I wont know the lack of it. The price in CAD climbs so quickly with the pen and any accessories the hit to my pocketbook was just too much going to the pro when the air is 90% there.
I think its because the M2 in ipad Pro will have significant improvement compared to the M1 so Apple doesn't need to make it complicated by optimize ipad OS for both A and M series.
I just have one question is 64gb enough? With genshin impact being around 16gb, throw some other heavy games and a few apps, I think it will be filled up in no time, considering the size of ipad apps are generally more than their mobile counterparts
I use 128gb iPad Pro M1, and I’ve used over 100gb so far and I’m deleting stuff regularly. I don’t even play heavy games. Go for 256gb if you’re planning to use the device for gaming. The 64gb is for content consumers people who watch movies and TH-cam.
this with a student discount (500$ with a pencil, I got apple care too but didn't include that) and it's a better choice than pro because refurbished units don't get the free pen (it's a 100$ gift card, which most use to just get the pen)
I just want a flagship version of iPad mini. Many years ago I had to spend a month in a hospital and I realized that iPad mini 2 was the perfect device for gaming because of how light and comfortable it was to hold like a handheld game console and yet the screen was big enough for movies and other media consumption. In addition it fitted in any small bag and even slid perfectly in an inner pocket of my jacket. It was truly marvelous device and I wish we could have a high end Mini with mini-led display and powerfull chip so it could be used as desktop when connected to a monitor.
I bought the air 2 weeks before the M1 version was announced. The shop didn't accept the return as I didn't purchase it from Apple directly. Unfortunate first Apple product experience.
This is the best review I’ve have seen on the new Air loved the way explained everything I am planning on getting the new Air so seeing this review was very helpful

I'm still using a 9.7" ipad pro from 2016 and its performance and battery life is now starting to lack after almost 6 years of heavy daily use, so I feel like it's time for a new ipad. I'm torn between just getting a new M1 ipad Air or just holding out for the next ipad pro models. The problem is I recently bought a Surface Pro 8, which is great, but the overall user experience purely for media consumption isn't great, I actually find it quite frustrating to use with its keyboard detached, so I often find myself reaching for my ipad instead of my surface pro when I just wanna quickly watch a video or just want a device to carry with me for media consumption on the bus or whatever, but owning a new surface pro 8 is making me question whether or not buying a new ipad is a dumb decision, even though I know I'll get a lot of daily use and utility out of a new ipad. Just don't wanna feel like I'm wasting money, you know?
The new iPad Air wins on the chip, front camera & 5G The old iPad Pro (3rd gen) wins on resolution, ProMotion & face ID The power & the rest of it relatively the same
My 2018 iPad Air is still working as a beast and no performance issue or lags so far. No need for me for so much power of M1 🤣. I am happy with my device which i already have. Not tempted to upgrade my ipad as it works absolutely fine.
Use the guided access for gaming, it won’t accidentally turn off your device if you press the power button, and triple click the power button to turn off guided access
M1 equipped Pro/Air are just not optimal if you reside in tropical areas with average ambient ~30-34C You can literally get a burnt fingertip if you touch the metallic Apple logo for more than half a minute during intensive work such as games/benchmarks/editing etc. If your room temp is 30C+ then expect the M1 to increase by +/- 15C-20C EZ in intensive workloads. Add a case to your iPad & not only will it make the chip throttle much sooner but also increase your battery temperatures to 36C+ while charging = a big No-No for battery longevity & efficiency. TL;DR : If you want a good ipad for casual use & you live in warmer areas then go for A14 Air 4 or even A15 Mini6 rather than the M1 iPad's.
Thank you Dave your reviews are really helpful I feel like you don’t just review things with bias. You are just apple Samsung Microsoft etc. You look at product who it is best for and guide the consumer. You also call out short comings or when something is bad value for the money.

My mom is going to get it. She "can't see the difference" between high refresh rate panels and she doesn't need an iPad for a camera. She does need storage, so the MKBHD comparison was a little faulty. The 50 dollar difference between 256 and ipad pro isn't real because that only has 128 and to upgrade to 256 is like 150 more and honestly too much for her use case. Thanks for the review!

***Unite related: i used to love playing on my 2020 pro, but i realized that you lose some of your view with the screen size. the game is cropped in despite being enlarged by the display. on an iphone you can see more of what’s going on
I heard that the new Ipad air has big problems with its build since the back is to thin... so thin that you some ppl can feel the internals... at a local tech-store it was so bad that you can hear it cracking.
I think the problem of the speakers in portrait mode while gaming can be solved by software update in future, isn't? They only have to change to the top speakers in this mode instead of bottom ones.
It becomes a little but more tricky in deciding between the air and the comparable pro if you getting it through your mobile carrier because the monthly installment fee is a very nominal difference
I would say if you are coming from an older iPad without ProMotion, you should get the Pro as you wouldn’t feel like you upgraded if you get the Air. Performance might be similar but the experience is worth the additional 50 dollars if you go for the 128gb Pro. ProMotion, lidar and 2 additional speakers for 50dollars. LiDAR might not be useful for most but screen and speakers will benefit you any day
I think the next iPad Pro will have an M2 Pro and iPad Air regular M2 chip, seems logical to differentiate these models aslong as Apple can manage thermals but I suppose they can since M2 series will probably be more efficient anyway

Refurbished is also a good choice. But honestly all iPads are a great value than iPhones, so any iPad you get really is a good deal.
Yeah ive had my ipad (same model as yours) for 2 years and performs very well for uni student use. Maybe battery life has gone down but still very good. My experience mirrors yours
Echo this, my 2018 iPad Pro still eats everything you throw at it.
same here brother, same model and i might upgrade if there ever is an M2 ipad pro!

Hey bro shall I buy the iPad 12.9 2018 or 11inch iPad pro 2020 for school? How will the software for 2018 hold up now in 2022?
@@rohan_snj I would suggest the 11 inch 2020 pro
@@rohan_snj Software yes, because both are the exact same chip just the Z is unlocked with a extra GPU core A12X, A12Z. It makes no difference in real world usage today and both are still crazy fast.
It would depend on the screen size, the 12.9 is more paper sized if you are going to use it with the apple pencil to take notes.

I think the iPads with M1 Chips are just severely held back by iPadOS. I just don't think Apple wants to compromise their MacBook sales due to making iPadOS too functional, which is unfortunate.
It just shows that Apple can very well sell you an M1 Mac Mini for $500, easily, but they won't.

I need 256gb so the Air is better, pro with 256 is way to much money
@@whitemuffin8650 You are right. That's the single scenario where the iPad Air is still the better option, if you don't care for the other Pro features.
I think 256Gb Air is here just to "force" more people to buy base iPad Pro, they probably won't sell many units compared to base storage Air

Their iPads are insane pieces of tech im glad they get to have, just, nothing worse than buying tech at these kind of price points for it to be old and obsolete models mere months later.

iPad airs are absolute bargains for the speed and performance nothing else on the market that can compare
I still have the 2017 10.5" iPad Pro and I'm still quite satisfied with it. I tried out the 2020 11"iPad Pro but ended up selling it because I liked the home button and touch iD on the older one. good thing I didn't sell or trade in my 2017 iPad. lol
I'll have to see what the 2022 Pros would bring to the table. 🧐 5 years for an upgrade ain't too bad at all.
Also an 10.5” iPad Pro user here ✋🏻
I thought the iPad Air 4 already made the 11” Pro pretty much redundant but this just takes it a step further. $150 less (Going by the 256GB Wi-Fi only models’ pricing here) for most of the experience is a total no-brainer, especially with the M1 inside. I can live without ProMotion and prefer Touch ID to Face ID so the Air is the way to go for me personally.
on Amazon EU the 256gb iPad Air is 20€ more expensive than the 128gb iPad Pro so I don’t know about that
Apple is probably betting on selling a lot of 64gb models because those are selling for 680€ at the moment
@@rub23n they're probably betting on nudging consumers towards the 256 and then the pro
Enable Guided access mode, and the power button will be useless unless you pressed 3 times in row in quick pace (which what you will do when exit the game)
I had to use it but for different reason. Some games I play need to swipe from bottom to up, and iOS think I want to close the app and either close it, or bring the home bar (and the game do not receive this swipe).
I was waiting for the M1 iPad Air for a long time. Now that they have it I know I'm getting one. excellent review as always!
I know im getting one too. I cant wait till its release!
Great review, thanks Dave.
Presently using an original 9.7-in iPad Pro, this M1 Air will be my next upgrade.
What’s really strange is (at least here in Japan) that the price for a 256GB model is very very close. Much close than for the base model.
In the US a 256gb iPad Air is only 50 dollars less than the 128gb iPad Pro, I think apple just wants people to buy the more expensive product.

iPads never underperformed even when they use to Have A series silicone, now with M1 I can bet it will keep on performing for like next 10 years cause there is no app that can take full potential of M1 and I doubt there will be any in the future, or else the differentiators between a MacBook and iPad will be lost.

Now that the iPad Air has an M1 chip, i want to know how long the battery lasts for a full day? Is it similar to the iPad Pro battery life or not?
Yes, MKBHD said they both have the same battery life
I just want a flagship version of iPad mini.
This is why people tell to keep updated about rumours and leaks and iPad Air was 100% sure it will be launched
Yes blame Apple for not releasing products on your buying schedule. Shame on them for not realizing the world revolves around only you. Eye rolls
@@chrisak49 I'm not even blaming Apple you fanboy. I didn't buy directly from Apple so I couldn't make use of the 14 day return policy. That's all.
Create pain point…
“Man, this sound is so muted when I play handheld. I might need some Bluetooth headphones!”

This is the best review I’ve have seen on the new Air loved the way explained everything I am planning on getting the new Air so seeing this review was very helpful
Really makes me wonder what apple has in store for iPad OS 16 this year...
Everyone had lots of expectations for iPad OS15 when they put the m1 in the pro. Then what we got hardly utilized the m1 at all. Don’t get your hope up this year.
@@makasete30 True..true i am upset that they didn't even add first party apps like logic pro xcode or FCP
@@yesiam6758 how many $600 ipad users are willing to spend $300 on a software, final cut. There’s LumaFusion for $30 does what most people would want.
@@makasete30 Yeah, iPads are amazing and much superior to iPhones and possibly MacBooks, but they’re literally running iOS. Samsung’s OS for their tablets is much better.
You can turn guided access on while gaming. It will lock the screen. The button won't tamper with the screen while it's on.
Honestly i prefer the Galaxy S8 Ultra. There is just something more appealing about the look of that tablet compared to this. Plus the quality and utility its comes with. Really competitive tbh

No android comes even close to the M1 chip, how do you even say this is beyond me
I have a iPad 4th gen (2014 model) which is starting to run into app end of life issues
I think this is the perfect upgrade for me
Plus I think if I ever feel like I need the extra storage I can just get a Samsung T5 for way cheaper
one of the best thing about dude is that whenever achieves something he never gives the credit to himself he always respect us the audience to most and team too. He is always polite in every of his videos. we congratulate ourselves for this achievement. more to come and everything to come. we're always with u.
The new iPad Air wins on the chip, front camera & 5G
The old iPad Pro (3rd gen) wins on resolution, ProMotion & face ID
The power & the rest of it relatively the same
Love the wallpaper (yellow and blue - subtle)!
My 2018 iPad Air is still working as a beast and no performance issue or lags so far. No need for me for so much power of M1 🤣. I am happy with my device which i already have. Not tempted to upgrade my ipad as it works absolutely fine.
nice opinion tech support
Use the guided access for gaming, it won’t accidentally turn off your device if you press the power button, and triple click the power button to turn off guided access
M1 equipped Pro/Air are just not optimal if you reside in tropical areas with average ambient ~30-34C
You can literally get a burnt fingertip if you touch the metallic Apple logo for more than half a minute during intensive work such as games/benchmarks/editing etc.
Another beautiful review. Best tech channel for a reason.
I have a 3rd party case on my iPad so the sleep wake button isn’t a problem when flipping the screen
Thank you Dave your reviews are really helpful I feel like you don’t just review things with bias. You are just apple Samsung Microsoft etc. You look at product who it is best for and guide the consumer. You also call out short comings or when something is bad value for the money.
I hold all iPads the way you hold them. Because I don’t like have sleep and awake button being covered by my hand and volume button too. So i always hold iPad from opposite side of the sleep awake and volume buttons.
I recently got an I pad air5 its pretty good! its efficient powerful and responsive i like it! It's a really good I pad and I think its the one to chose if you want performance... but not the most expensive i pad. It's just a good I pad.. what else can i say?
My mom is going to get it. She "can't see the difference" between high refresh rate panels and she doesn't need an iPad for a camera. She does need storage, so the MKBHD comparison was a little faulty. The 50 dollar difference between 256 and ipad pro isn't real because that only has 128 and to upgrade to 256 is like 150 more and honestly too much for her use case. Thanks for the review!
Sorry sir, but this is one of the best, on point, review I've seen on TH-cam. Well written and excellent pace 👏👏👏
@Tj Semeniuk not at all. It's just a cute phrase :)
Dont ever doubt Dave's Review like i did at 3:06
4:33 nice sketch would like to see a completed version of that
quad speakers and 5 studio quality mics in iPad Pro are killer.
It becomes a little but more tricky in deciding between the air and the comparable pro if you getting it through your mobile carrier because the monthly installment fee is a very nominal difference
heya , im still using this iPad Air and it still rock and will rock for the next 5 years !!!!
What is that ipad accessory hanging off of it at 1:37???
Edit: Just looked it up, it appears to be the ROG Clavis?? interesting
Love your subtle reference with the wallpaper and its colors! Thanks!
0:21 - 0:28 this cut is pretty interesting and creatively!
Awesome review. One of the best for sure! Came away with a lot of the same opinions.
Dang everyone in the east coast has started their day and everyone in the west coast is still sleeping not knowing their notifications are all of the same videos ahhaa. Can't wait to see these vids
I sneezed while watching your video on my phone and totally tried to wipe off those holes in your wall…. Great video as always man! 👍🏼
I've been waiting for this
I have the original ipad air 2. Running good for the past 7+ years. Cant see myself upgrading until it stops working.
Great stuff! Always the best😎
