The idea is cool because they didn't come up with it, it's 90% a rip from a concept done by Joyce Kang and the one addition they added doesn't even work well
3:07 yeah, the reason why scrolling is inconsistent is the belt slipping. a proper system would have an adapter that fits over the crown, or a gear of sorts that engages the crown. its badly engineered.
I don't know Dave... intuitively, it was clear from the very first moment that there cannot be any selector button. I mean, what should it select anyway? the element you're looking at? the whole screen is a selector area 😄
For clarification, the unit sent to Dave (as we told him) is a test unit for the 45mm watch, not SE, hence the wheel issue - We sent it to Dave for a first look and didn’t know he’d publish early, so we couldn’t clarify. (Still a Dave2D fan)
All three of my 45mm watches fit into the slot but were too tight on the wheel mechanism and didn't allow the wheel too turn. The SE was a loose fit (hence the paper to make it fit better) but at least allowed the movement of the wheel.
4:21 the first generation iPod nano has a plastic front place, so the one you’re holding is the second generation that has the aluminum shell akin to the iPod mini.
@chepulis I do agree that getting a functional and good feeling print would take some time, but like @SimonBauer7 said some post processing could get it to a state similar to the product in the video
Yes, exactly like he said within the first 10 seconds of the video. Thank you Captain Obvious. But if you watch further than just the first 10 seconds, you’ll find out it’s a lot more than “just a case”.
Add in external battery (USB-C to charge), replace the scroll wheel with a bluetooth keyboard with a little roller that electronically controls the crown and you might have a winner.
I designed something similar for my Apple Watch Ultra, but instead of the scroll wheel, there’s a slot for my AirPods Pro case. I feel that it’s a much better design. The scroll wheel is cool for nostalgia I suppose, but I get more use from having a spot for the AirPods, and it can still be used one handed. I love using it when I go out on a hike or climbing and don’t feel like bringing my phone with me
The Clicks case for iPhones are pretty neat. Kinds of bring back the nostalgia of using a blackberry with some shortcuts tuned for iOS. I definitely have a softspot for my Q10 and wish it was something viable in today's world (uses ARM, not ARM64, so very limited selection of apps).
The funny thing about tactility is that moving to virtual interfaces (even with some limited haptics) isn't always a straightforward advancement. There's a reason that most keyboard and mice enthusiasts have to go back decades in Apple's history to find a halfway decent peripheral from them, even though they are a behemoth in consumer electronics now (their Magic trackpads are respectable, though, but still not comparable to using a mouse).
This is kinda cool for digital minimalist. You can do everything you need to and get notifications for all of it but using it is not the best. Theres not apps that suck you in.
Not the same. This is a fun lil project. I’m also a bit disappointed Dave didn’t use a watch that fit. How can you review something with the wrong fit? Kinda pointless video, really.

Saw an ad for this earlier today and I thought it looked pretty cool. I think it could be a fun use for my current Apple Watch when I upgrade. Hopefully they make a version 2 with a functional button.
To make this product work as we expect it to , Apple watch have to be able to have a dedicated mode which it will shift to when connected to a tiny pod and the whole working will have to be via wireless communication , i.e. via bluetooth / wi-fi / internet, which will actually increase the price to at least $279 from $79 in apple sense
Honestly, I like using my apple watch without a case or bands or anything. It feels like a spy gadget or something because it's so small that you don't even use your palm to hold it, just your fingers.
The thought of this terrifies me. I’d lose it within minutes. Find it. Lose it. Find it. Leave it in a pocket and end up sticking it in the washing machine
4:40 How did you expect this to work? There is no other function on the Apple Watch other than pressing it with your finger. Some magical energy that emanates from the device and presses it for you?
This just makes me wish that Apple still made modern iPods for enthusiasts, kinda like the walkman still exists. Kinda sad they abandoned one of their most recognizable products. A new iPod with USB-C, support for streaming apps and seamless airpod integration would be awesome
You mean like an Ipod classic? In terms of Ipod touch, you can just get a used Ipod or if that's too old for your liking or you dont want to buy used, get an Iphone 13 mini. Not optimal, but good enough.
Nah then you're not the intended customer anyway. It's supposed to bank on the nostalgia factory. $8 should be the max they should charge. Otherwise they'll be undercut easily.
I think a bluetooth keyboard and a way to charge the watch through usbc wouldve made this genuinely useful to someone who wants to disconnect like i do.
3:13 ok this proves that this is half assed engineering. They could've attached the rubber to a gear that has the exact same ridges as the digital crown instead of the rubber scrolling it directly, that's what's causing the scrolling inconsistency. and for the scroll wheel, use a gear that also has the same number of ridges but on a larger diameter and spaced out evenly, that way the scroll wheel precisely coverts rotational energy and feels perfectly tactile this is a fun 3D printing project, not at 80$ product.
Nice concept. IMHO if you made this as a pocket watch/charger/speaker with a carabiner clip this would be perfect for a camping trip. I could strap to my backpack for a hike or chill at the beach and lose the suntan lines while on vacation.
Honestly thank you, I was seriously looking at one of these because I do not want to go to a bigger phone but I will buy the less expensive one and an SE and save myself the money.
I’m hoping some 3D printing/modding youtuber sees this and makes their own, better version. If you were destructive with the apple watch, you could do so much more - larger battery, wired charging, a clickable wheel
It would get quite hacky. Other devices in the Android or open ecosystems would easier to do this with. It's too bad the Pinetime is a bit lacking in hardware specs, but that would be a good candidate - might be some other devices, as well, that would be good fit.
I can see a design like this working via Accessibility triggers for motion control and selection on the watch, bluetooth controls in the case. Surely a tiny RP2040 or RP2350 based board would be overkill for sensor and bluetooth roles, but quick to prototype with.
Honestly this is one time where I would've liked to see it priced a bit higher, but actually have a small motor+servo to manipulate the crown with a capacitive scroll wheel (plus they can manipulate the acceleration of the motor for better scroll feel etc etc)
I don't understand that, if they put so much effort into the mechanism for the crown, why not hijack Apple's "pinch to select" they have in accessibility and create a mechanism for the centre button that'll emulate it? Apple can already tell if someone pinches their fingers with the device and handles it through software already, so all someone would have to do is find a way to trick that mechanism to activate whenever the centre button is clicked.
I think that only works when it’s against your skin/wrist right? Needs the sensors on the back to detect that and in this case that wouldn’t be happening
It would be nice if this could be Bluetooth connected. I wonder if Apple allows a Bluetooth connected device to an Apple Watch to control it, I feel like there’s something like that in the AssistiveTouch, switch control settings
What should that click select? There is no such thing in the Apple Watch ui that suggests you selected something, you can only scroll to see a list of apps. You are demanding something that would need a fundamental UI/UX change within the Apple Watch.

I don't mind the simple mechanism. I actually like that's mechanical and doesn't try to interfere or work with the software (not that it will be easy or viable) But I can't excuse the cheap casing. This Apple Watch case has a pulley system that allows you to turn the dial only. I can envision this as the $30 version, while the $80 version should have wireless integration, such as Bluetooth or NFC functionality, to enable the scroll wheel and button clicking functions.
