Stage 1 is the music I hear when I think of Batman. No matter how dark, brooding, and psychological they make him now, nothing beats the Batman this music represents: an unstoppable badass marching though a horde of thugs and feeding them their own teeth.
For me this is the pinnacle of what the NES was capable of and the sound tracks sunsoft managed to squeeze out of that audio chip are absolutely amazing. My personal favorite is definitely stage 1 at 01:33

While the console only has a capacity of 32K of PRG-ROM and 8K of CHR-ROM, mappers can increase the capacity; in this case the game has a FME-7 with 256K of PRG-ROM and 128K of CHR-ROM. The music runs on a subroutine during V-blank where the audio registers are updated. There's plenty of PRG-ROM space for the tracks including the DPCM bass.
This kicks massive asses because the bass is sampled and the "drums" (bass drum and snare) are emulated with the triangle wave (lowest frequencies) of the NES, ussually they used the low freq to do bass, and sample some snare or other drums, here is reversed. PD: the "hi-hat" is emulated with the noise audio channel of the NES, as always is.
I have been playing this almost nonstop for two days. I can't get over how thunderous that bass is. I've always loved this soundtrack, but I'm just now appreciating it.
finally 20 years later i can understand why this OST surprised me as hell, Sunsoft FME-7 chip . I couldn't undertstand all these years how they made this music in that age, really it's amazing the power of this chip.
@@priscillaasagiri4913 It's possible to time the "dynamite batman" collectibles and become invincible in that dreaded corridor with the spikes. So that stage it's not really that hard. I would argue that The real BRUTAL one is stage 3-1, the true ragequitter. It spoils the fun you had in the previously "easy" level and even if you know the layout...it is next to impossible to avoid damage with that flawed jump that batman has. The spike ceiling is just...oof. Still, very beatable when you learn it. Same with contra, castlevania, megaman, and even ninja gaiden.
@@richyroa Stage 3 was ok for me. Contra is hard but note very hard. i had Contra 1, Castlevania 1 and Megaman 1 and i finished them. The hardest part in Contra 1 is the boss before the waterfall. the rest is ok. Megaman 1 the yellow (or orange) boss is the hardest but the rest is ok too. Castlevania the death corridor is the worst part but the rest is ok. And i never finished ninja Gaiden (1,2,3).

Sometimes people have completely different ways for hard sections and two people's perception of hard can be totally different. For example, contra's Waterfall boss was and still is very easy for me but I still struggle with the laser stage (like trying a no death run). Megaman 1 is not as hard as people say and I agree. Just like 2 it can be completed in one sitting... with enough practice. The yellow devil is bs though ( I'm not ashamed to abuse the pause glitch once I discovered it). Same with the boobeam trap in 2. Great games and great times. Like those games, we are becoming "classic" in age...haha.

Fun fact for the kids, the US prototype of Mr. Gimmick used the same sound chip for Batman: Return of the Joker: the Sunsoft 5B chip, which is essentially a modded version of the same chip used on ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, and select arcade games. Because of this, it's possible to convert Batman: Return of the Joker to Mr. Gimmick by swapping the code on the PRG and CHR chips.

I grew up with the Famicom and till this day I still feel that the Stage 1 tune is the best NES track ever released. 02:30 is better than sex

Not as hard as the AVGN made it out to be, but not easy by any meanings. All required is patience, and you've got yourself a great game
