The Best Putting Tip Ever! (No Joke - Try It)

  • If you're looking for the best putting tip ever you've found it. This is no joke. I used to be a phenomenal putter. This was from practicing my putting a minimum 1 hour at the course and up to another 3 hours at home on indoors on the carpet into an indoor putting cup I called the Puttacup.
Everyone loses their putting at one time or another. If you're not making putts, you start thinking about your stroke. Thinking about your stroke is the worst thing you can possibly do. In order to become a great putter, you need to be target oriented. This is the best putting tip that's going to allow you to do just that. Don't believe me? Try it.
I know it can be frustrating when you aren't putting your best but don't worry. Now that you've found the best putting tip ever, you can watch it and go back to it in the future if you ever lose it again.
I thought of this putting drill many years ago and it has been tested on many golfers with them all saying it works great and helped them start putting great again. So give what I call the best putting tip a try. Once you do, leave your comment below so I can prove that becoming target oriented is the way to become a great putter.

Dear Paul, It's really insane ... I have practiced it at my putting green equipment, the length is about 2.8 meter and he result has never been consistent like this. Thanks a lot, Paul, for this craziest putting tips that has never been since.
I will practice at my golf club this Saturday and I am sure my golf mates will be surprised of the result, which will be sure I will make total putting of less than 36 uit in total ...
Thanks again Paul for this incredible tips ...
I will give a comment further after I practice it on Saturday this week ...

I have to give props and say this this title of “best tip ever” is no clickbait exaggeration. I have been putting like a new man the last 2 weeks since watching this video and doing the wiggle drill before each round. Completely freed up my stroke for both short and long putts. Even started making 20 footers much more frequently. Focusing on the target and not stroke mechanics is truly a game-changer. Kudos, Paul!

I tried this technique today…putted the best I have in a long time. Somehow my speed was great. When I missed long putts, they were left within inches of the hole. I almost holed out a 30 footer. I felt like I could make every putt I took today. Thanks so much for this video.

I played 2 days in a row with 90% 2 putts AND an occasional 1 putt! I Made my husband watch your video and he tried it and he said “I’m a convert “. I rarely leave comments on videos however I tried this and I had to have my say! I am a 5 handicap. I played 2 consecutive rounds with 4-5 3 putts per round. I was beyond frustrated . I found this video and thought " why not try it , It cannot hurt my terrible putting . I did this drill for 20 mins before my round , I honestly didnt notice anything on the practice green that would indicate what happened on the course. On the course , I putt Lights out ! I swear ! I made a 15 footer for birdie on the 1st, then decided to wiggle as a practice stroke the rest of the round and IT WORKS ! thank you Paul

Thank-you so much for this putting tip/miracle!!!!
I immediately went out used your putting in League play. I seen a definite improvement in target focus. I then played in a scramble on the weekend & putted LIGHTS OUT!!! I made 3 long putts totaling over 80 feet. Two of the 3 putts were for EAGLE and each putt was 25 feet or more. (No Pressure 😂). I was freer & more target focused. I really never gave any thought to how far any of the putts were. Our final score was 12 under for the day! This was a CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT for all the golf leagues that play at the golf course during the golf season. I have played golf for over 40 years & this was my best day of putting!! Thank-you Paul!!!

I like the imitation of the frustrated golfers! This is great. I stumbled onto something years ago and never realised why it worked so well until this video. I would imagine myself simply attempting to roll the ball in the hole similar to lawn bowling and then take the put, the improvement was the quickest and longest lasting change I'd ever had. It still works a charm, and thanks to you I realised its because I am not thinking thru the shot but simply making the shot. My method is different but I think essentially the same. Thanks!! I also applied a similar principle to my Irons, I basically imagine I'm chopping into a tree with an axe, this also had great results, even though I thought I would be slicing the ball a lot I didn't. Just had a simple, relatable, image in my head instead of a bunch of confused instructions!! Thanks again.

the wiggle part helped me, but it also helped me realize that I focus too much on lining up correctly and getting the path right that I just push or pull all my putts. This just helps me pick my line, get up to the ball, and just putt. This will take some time to adjust on the course, but during practice I definitely see and feel a difference.

What a great drill. Not only does this help with the accuracy of your putting, but I was amazed at how much better my contact with the putter was. I'd stuggled for years with the strike on the ball with my old putting stroke. I was hitting dead center of the putter face with this drill.

@@paulwilsongolf That makes me now wonder if the "why" of this move I've found (lucked into) to cause far better contact on long putts is merely a version of this. Would make sense, as I've made no effort to "quantify" it. For my chipping practice, I take my putter to the scattered results and experiment with ways of getting such long distances done via putts back to my chipping area. Had settled on just stroking through a spot a couple of inches in front of the ball on my "target line", but the backswing had to be "inside" the target line - my idea of an "arc" - but no "particular" arc. Initially thought it only worked if it was used with a "wristy" stroke, but eventually found that that *wasn't* the common denominator. And, solid contact nor great distance control were *not* the prime goal, but they quickly became rather amazing "side effects", especially considering what a *horrendous* putter I've always been. Thanks to this tip, further experimentation is most certainly in order. 🙂 Thank you! Now can't get Billy Mayfair out of my mind. . .

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, don't over analyze it. Just keep doing it so you become target oriented not stroke oriented. Just remember that you are no wiggling it when you play (you can if you want) but I typically have people do their normal stroke on the course.

I am a retired teacher of Golf for over 16 years, and I would tell my students to stop trying to take the putter straight back and through or ride the arc - mind and muscle kill your swing - even when you putt. Their putting grip pressure went from 5 to 10 trying to be perfect. LOL. I would tell them to loosen the grip to a 3 and then focus on the hole at impact - NOT the ball. Awesome tip! Excellent!

Paul this is a putting version of David Lee's old proprioception drills! I did this for three straight days and yesterday and today I played in our state's super senior AM tournament and I putted great in tournament conditions on greens that were running over 13. I only 3-putted twice, and anyone who plays in tournaments can tell you it's a totally different deal than playing with your buddies. I think what this does is it makes you instinctively feel the weight of the putter. Pretty amazing.

Good tip Paul. Years ago I did the no look at the ball drill after setting up and deciding on my line, and it ended up becoming a regular routine for me. This is right in line with that because focus is on the target. I find that getting hypnotized staring at your ball/putter/line is just too static and rigid, and more often than not on putts of 4' or longer you're offline when you come through.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yes, there have a been a lot of people who benefitted from looking at t he hole. This would be target oriented too but I think most people don't like doing it. They like to look at the ball and putter. That is where this drill comes in and will help countless people get target oriented too. Up to you which you decide to do.

Listen as a new golfer who has played basketball for 35 years, all I can say is YES!!! IM NOT CRAZY.... when I first started putting I didn't worry about anything other than the cup. (Aka the target) I was sinking 10 footers like free throws. Then, as I played more and started watching other people and listening to guys give me tips putting became the hardest part of the game. For me putting is so much easier when I take the jump shooter mentality. Focus on the target and simply follow through.

I 100% agree! I just picked up golf 3 years ago. I raced motocross and played college football growing up so I’m pretty well coordinated. When I started golfing I was burying putts! 10-20-30footers! My boss couldn’t believe it on a company outing, sunk a 35footer in front of the outing host in a putting contest. Now 3 years later my putting has greatly declined. After watching your video this makes way to much sense. When I started I was focusing on target and referencing my ball out of the corner of my eye. Now I stare at the ball and not the cup! I’m leaving for a 3 day outing in about ten minutes and cannot wait to try this out!!! I’ll report back here when I return home!

Paul, I often missed (30%) short putts when I concentrated and tried to do everything right, but about 4 years ago I noticed that I always made (100%ish) short putts when I did not care. I would walk up to a four to five foot putt and not even set myself (maybe still walking) and putt the ball into the center of the hole. I realized then that I should try this mentality with long putts too. Unbelievable. It worked except I did set myself briefly and would simply tell myself I don't give a crap if the ball goes in or not. It really freed up my head and stroke. It works. I think it is the same principle that you are talking about in this video.

Without having practised, I decided to try this technique on a practice round and it felt incredible. Paul, I worked this today with my new evnroll. It’s a great way to get you to not stress. I usually watch the putter to insure it’s on the right path. This has caused tension and 80% of my putts to be short. This gave me free flow. I did a practice stroke with it then hit my putt. It was a successful transition. Thanks Paul, your overall tips helped me so much last season! (e.g. the last 36 holes I played I hit driver some 28 times almost dead straight, only one slight fade maybe 12 yds off straight!). For a 18 HC ...wow. SO I have a I think a unique putting tip, after maybe watching some literally 1000 YT videos last 4 yrs, NO ONE has mentioned this method. But hope you like this one and use it as advice. Works fairly well to read greens.
So, usual advice is stand in line with your shot to hole with feet spread apart (90 Degrees to the line) and "feel" any slope L or R. Well, my feet are not that calibrated unless its a BIG slope. What I come up with is to plumb bob my putter, holding it say waist height, after standing with both feet evenly apart 90 degrees to the line. Then hold my putter, lightly with two fingers so putter can swing freely L or R. The putter head is down near the green & my feet. I now stand straight, balanced; so now IF the slope is say R to L, the putter will be slightly closer to my LEFT FOOT. Right side is higher. Proves the ball will run slightly R - L.
Further, but a well known tip is to check if the lip of the hole is worn say on that left side, maybe even brown blades of grass bent down on that side; If so, Left side is lower.
Hope you like this idea re using the putter plumb bobbing between the feet, to verify what your feet should feel? Thanks again and take care, hope you have a great 2024 season. Ron K

Yes, wow. That's great. So glad you found me and are doing well. I am not big on feeling it in my feet. Can't seem to feel any difference. Plumb bobbing has been around forever but they hold it up at eye level. Waist high is different and may actually work. I think some of it would be dependent on leg length. If one leg was shorter you would have to take that into consideration. I will try it and see how it works. If so, I may do a tip on it in the future. Thanks for sending it. Keep up the good work.

Interesting timing of this tip. I had a rough round putting recently due to playing on a course with crazy fast greens. I went to the driving range/putting area at my local course (East Potomac for those who know) to meet with my wife after her lesson to play a quick 9 on the par 3 course and she was talking about the "pause to gather" in the backswing concept. For some reason I thought to try an ever so slight pause with mu back stroke while putting...and all of a sudden I was the master of putting! Moral of the story is I think the pause in my back stroke forced me to send the putter forward towards the target. I kept the pause during my round and am going to try it this weekend, but if that starts to falter, I'll use this wiggle drill to get my mind focused on the target.

I wiggled like you said(as my friends laughed) and the results were pretty instant. By the 25th practice putt, I started noticing them going in. During the round I made 6 birdies, no three putts and a total of 26 putts, a personal best. I did miss 3 putts within 6 feet, so still a little yippie, but man what a difference! Thank you

This really works. 6 handicapper here. I struggle to make putts. Tried this drill before teeing off yesterday. Introduced it as a bit of a practice stroke after seeing it working. Pace of my putts were much better and stroke felt a lot more natural. I was also able to start each putt online much easier! More putts 6 foot + went in and my confidence grew during the round! Thanks for this video ❤ The madness works 🤯

Well I tried this on my carpet, I find the wiggle required too much focus, however, I found a looping strode accomplished exactly what you demonstrate. Today I went to a putting green and probably hit sixty plus putts using this looping stroke with remarkable success. I play tomorrow and plan to use my new loop stroke exclusively, I’ll report the outcome. Thanks for keeping golf fresh with new and great tips.

Just tried this yesterday with 10 putts..did very well..need to try it more and see full results. What I like about this tip is the amount of pressure/anxiety that has been taken off because now I just wiggle back , putt forward and just continue to play my game. If anything, this strategy has reduced stress levels 10x!!!!

    Tried it, this works.
Playing golf with my eyes and stroking the ball without any tension. My typical score is 83. Today 78 with no three putts and quite a few tap ins for par. Tried it with an 80’ wedge from a side hill lie. I typically try to land a pitch on a spot and let it roll out. This time I just looked at the hole even though there was a 10’ right to left break. Ball lipped out.
    This is the real deal.

Thanks so much. Wish I could go back and start again. Just keep this stuff simple. Hinge and rehinge the wrists. Coil and uncoil the body. Watch for spin (wrists) and direction (body). Then not hitting with arms in the down and through swing. Power it with the legs and hips. All of my tips are based on this.

Unbelievable! I generally wiggle my putting stroke, get mad about it and spent the rest of the game making sure that I make a straight back, straight forward path with my swing. Now that I see your tutorial, I can recall sinking putts by unintenionally wiggling my putt. And I say, that was lucky. Tomorrow I will definitively put this in practice and will comment back non my results. Thank nyou Paul, you just opened a big window that was shut down.
