I feel Sabat could at least try to make Vegeta sound younger whenever he's voicing the Saiyan and Namek saga versions of him, He used to actually voice him younger in the flashbacks. Compare DBGT's flashback of Goku vs. Vegeta's pre-battle stand-off (and the subsequent fight) that was dubbed around 2004-05, iirc. Vs. the 2005's Funimation dub of DBZ Saiyan Saga. More or less same dialogs, but Vegeta sounded younger in GT in the flashback, whereas it was deeper in the 2005 DBZ dub (it seemed intentional, because in the same episode in GT, present-day Vegeta was having a deeper voice and in the flashbacks till Freeza Saga, when he was dying, he lent a youthful voice to him). Contrastingly, in the same flashback scene that also showed the Majin Vegeta flashbacks, in GT, Sabat gave a deeper voice to him vs. how he originally dubbed back in the Buu saga around 2001 or so. Sabat's evolution and change as a VA over the years, is very fascinating, I guess. Some of his creative decisions in voices, especially that of Vegeta's, I personally don't agree with (feel his Vegeta voice peaked around 2001-05), but still.
My only complaint with this ranking is you guys used the dub score sometimes and Kikuchi score other times for Z making the music comparisons a little unbalanced. I think it should be consistent
One of my biggest reasons of preferring Z over Kai besides the music is Stephanie Nadolny as kid/pre-teen Gohan and Christopher Sabat’s original Vegeta voice. Sabat’s original voice of Vegeta really elevated the scenes in the Cell, Saiyan, and Namek saga which just fits a younger Vegeta. He just sounds more angry, prideful and kinda still having that evil not fully reformed energy. I also prefer Stephanie because I prefer her deeper voice, plus you can tell she deepens her voice as the series goes on as Gohan grows. I can’t even tell if Colleen voice changes as Gohan grows. Overall I prefer the original Z dub, but I have a lot to love in Kai.
Why didn't Sabat emulate his og dub voices, so he can better emulate younger Vegeta ? I bet there's scenes of stem cell Vegeta, with his Gt/super voice 😒
Truthfully for me I feel the opposite, no disrespect to Stephanie Nadony but she sounds too much like a grown woman pretending to be a kid, sometimes it took me out of the show. Collen Clinkenbeard sounded like a real kid, plus she had better dialogue, she did change voice as Gohan grew. I will give Nadony credit, she was at her best during the Cell Saga.
The Kai Gohan voice is better it sounds more like a 9 year old child than a the original voice actor. She definitely deepens her voice from 5 year old Gohan training with piccolo to 9 or 10 year old he was when he fought cell. I think a lot of people are attached to the original voice actor because she also voiced Goku in the original Dragonball dub goku was 12 though so it was more appropriate than its was for a 5 year old
Vegeta’s dialogue was left out in the Kai version of the flashback scenes because that’s how it is in the original Japanese version as well. They let the scenes speak for themselves. Remember, the English dub of Z was notorious for adding additional dialogue in scenes that were meant to be silent in the original. Overall, I like the Kai version of the Buu saga just a bit more due to its more natural sounding dialogue. It goes for mature instead of “cool”, which watching as an adult now, I appreciate.
Finally, the last saga for DBZ vs. Kai is here. Been waiting for a while for this one, and props for finishing the series. Can't wait to see more content from you!

Personally for me I grew up with the og dragon ball z so that’s the dub I will always go back to because it’s the one I grew up with the most at least in my opinion.
I agree the scene where Goku convinces Vegeta to fuse is better in Kai but I always love that “WAKE UP” from Goku in Z because he knows Vegeta is lying to himself about not caring
I wonder why yall didn't use the Bruce falconer version of the ssj3 transformation when all the other examples were. yall gotta remember the original z version we all watched as kids was with the Bruce falcouner score
The Kai script is without a doubt objectively better & more accurate to the source material on paper, but I can't help but feel that the older dubs sound more natural. The Kai dubs accurate translation can sometimes sound unnecessarily sophisticated as if meant for a theatre production, rather than natural dialogue found in Movies & TV. This is where I find myself preferring interpretations that while maybe not being a 100% accurate translation still convey 100% of what the intention of the dialogue & acting is supposed to convey.
I swear, I've watched 2 dub versions back in the day: the OG ocean dub with Bruce ost, a similar dub to the ocean but slight changes, and, the funimation dub. I was always able to tell the difference between them all through Picollo teaching Gohan to sense Yamcha and the Saibamans energy, Vegeta's "Over 9000", Nappa's reaction to Gohan doing Masenko, and Yajirobe asking Goku to hit ChiChi after the battle. I've watched all 3 several times and Kai twice as well as the Japanese sub (I'm That much of a DB nut) and the OG Z dub will ALWAYS reign supreme. Though, the Japanese ost slaps, too.
i have to disagree on the decision for buu blows up the planet (1:08:19)... i think kai did way better giving the situation that they had and the scene that transpired after. you both gave a good point on how Goku seemed scared and questioned Buu"s actions. the reason i disagree is how Vegeta reacted to the fact that Goku left the others behind to save Hurcule and Dende. DBZ made Vegeta and Goku just trying to escape the blast. But in Kai... Vegeta saying "w-wait" to Goku as he grabs on to him and looking at the others leaving them behind makes the scene more impactful and making some sense of why Vegeta was mad at Goku for leaving them behind in the scene that comes after
I would like to see a comparison with Abridged and OG or Kai. At least with the more serious scenes in Abridged. (I just think some of the voice acting is so much better, like Vegeta’s Rage or Vegeta’s Final Flash)
There are times when I would prefer a scene in Z (I do vastly prefer Kai overall), but Z's weak voice acting really kills it. Even when the dialogue is good, I sometimes just laugh at a scene instead of feeling any kind of drama or tensity.
The only DBZ Kai Dub I like is the Frieza Saga Kai Dub. It's mainly because that's the debut of Chris Ayres as Frieza, and it's phenomenal. We really lost the perfect Frieza. I know Daman Mills is doing a good job, but it still a shame nonetheless.
I mostly prefer Majin Vegeta speech in Z over Kai, but i think the uncut version of Dragon ball z Kai is better overall. The voice acting has improved.
I definitely agree. Also, a major problem I had with Z Vegeta was the acting. Even when the dialogue was better, acting killed some scenes. That was not the case in Kai.

Kai is meant to be more accurate to Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga and the dub is meant be the faithful translation that DBZ's dub ultimately wasn't, so it's more or less going to stick to what was present in the original Japanese release and not stray from it or add to the script like they did before.
46:08 Yea i’ma have to disagree with you slightly. I like Kai’s better but I feel like it’s only by a hair. Z’s is still pretty good his and Piccolos conversation feels natural
Whats got to be remembered is that Goku knows Goten. In dbz - Goku seems like he's bantering about a little him and has been watching him. But in Kai Goku seems almost confused by Goten
29:59 kind of feels like when you are walking with christ and start to die to the world.. and you think back on all your heathen dope smoking cross state adventures.. compared to the silence of residing in the holy spirit
I think I understand. When I first had Christ break my addiction and forgive my sins, I was elated. I was in the Heavens here on Earth. I felt pure love. But these days, my headspace is bad. The good times with God’s presence are memories now. I don’t feel safe in my own mind anymore. And I’m tempted, and don’t exactly recall in clarity why I had left my addiction to begin with. That’s something I could only discover again by giving back in, and I never want to do that
This there any specific reason that you switches to Japanese ost whenever Super Saiyan 3 is in the scene Is there any problem with the Super Saiyan 3 theme? 😢
58:30 my problem with the kai dialogue is the part that you said you liked which is goku saying he wished he could've watched gohan grow up. My problem is that he could've but he chose to stay dead after the cell games. If he really wanted to see everyone again all he would've had to do is talk to someone through king kai and tell them to wish him back. He spoke to everyone about coming back for a tournament so there's no reason to think he couldn't do that beforehand.
1) King Kai would not be happy being used as a telephone for Goku. 2) He let himself die because he thought he attracted villains. If it were any other circumstance, he'd let himself be brought back to life, but after all he's experienced, all he's seen, he decided remaining dead was the best thing for Earth. 3) He only contacted them because Baba negotiated for Goku to come back for one day. It was a special circumstance.
These side by side videos are well done, great job. I enjoy the Z overall simply for the Bruce Faulconer score. I simply cannot watch the show without that score it makes me feel the best scenes so much more.
I never liked the added dialogues present in the OG version (like the Cell Saga just moments just before Gohan’s transformation to SSJ2 the inner dialogue that made no sense in the context of the scene or the pre-SSJ Goku vs Frieza had too much off screen dialogue which was enough to give me a headache)… Kai wins in this regard no questions….
It was because of the website we used. I used that same site to make the Cell saga video and it had the Faulconer score, so I assumed the Buu saga was the same. For a while, I thought the Faulconer score had a few tracks from the Kikuchi score. Later I realized that some episodes had different scores, but by then we were too far into the project lol
I thought the music during Gohans transformation vs Kibito in OG Z was the coolest shit of all time as a kid lol I had the episode on VHS and watched it so many times
I really don't know how any of you guys can pick any scene from Kai over Z, and I'm a reasonable person. Every vegeta scene he says the same thing in Kai, just his fight with goku, he barely says the other 75% of other dialogue explaining his anguish. Plus Z's music.
I love that people are finally accepting that Kai is superior. But i understand that some people still won't give in, because it just depends on what you grew up with.
Z's version of Majin Vegeta is pretty good, and I understand why people like that version so much, but Kai's will forever stick in my mind. I'll never forget the line, "I wasn't happy!" People say he was, "too whiney", but not only is that manga accurate, I think it was done well. The Z version is pretty whiney, too.
Why flip between the faulconer soundtrack and kikuchi score with z ? But overall I pick z the soundtrack and dialogue is what gets me in z btw I mean the falconer soundtrack
I will never hate Kai as it is the way some of people discovered Dragonball. What you watch first is generally what you are going to prefer as nostolgia is a very strong emotion. I think we can all agree the fact that Kai has this weird green color filter thing going on and is pretty weird but that is it's only REAL objective negative over the OG. It's sad that Kai will probably be forgotten with time. The original Z will always sell more from name alone and will be rereleased much more down the road. Picture this. If a magical 4K version of Dragonball Z came out in say 5 years what version are they going to use? If we are being honest they are just going to slap the Original Z with the OG Dub and all into the release. I only say this because even when Kai was still new and coming out Funimation released the new Blu Rays at the time just to go on and sell more then the show that was hot and new. Kai in the Dub especially is supposed to give you a more authentic experience. But I already have that. It's the Japanese version. The OG Dub with all of it's changes and faults is still a unique experience. One that Kai can't replicate. Good video especially on that is almost 2 hours. PS Joke I know but still how TF can you not be mad that they changed "And this is to go even further beyond!" That line is to anime as the "I'll be back." line is to Sci-Fi.
I prefer Z overall, I like it’s dialogue. Kai has better experience of dialogue But I also enjoy the Screams better in Z by vegeta his voice in Kai just is different in pitch grudge and I prefer his manly voice From Z. I DONT mind the filler as it’s fun to watch personal opinion. I think the music is better in dbz for me tbh, While music in Kai either don’t fit the scene or personal taste, but that’s just because I don’t listen to japan music and etc, it’s just more American so it makes sense, the songs are good, but they’re just not my taste 😊 Overall Z is my favorite because of goku’s voice as well in buu saga, especially the spirit bomb. I love the echo’s and reverb they used it used to sound way better in Z imo then dbs lol
So for me growing up in the UK i had the Canadian dub of Z but to choose the Kai version is just better, the actors have matured and the voices sound a lot better and way more consistant with other DragonBall material. The music is much better than Z, whilst I like the music of Scott Morgan, Mike Smith and Julius Dobos (the faulconer productions team who actually did the music Bruce did nothing), the original Kikuchi score just hits different. Why do you think every country just uses the original music instead of remaking it but worse, and anythings better than the Canadian score which is just reused music form older cartoons. As for voice cast I do have a soft spot for Brian Drummand as Vegata and Scott McNiel as Piccolo but the Funimation cast is in everything else that I have gotten used to and prefer the new takes on the characters than the original dub of Z. Basically I prefer kai though saying that I already know that Amercian Z fans will get pissy because the music isn't the replacement score or Bulmas voice is different, everyones got different opinions and maybe stop letting nostalgia cloud your judgement on stuff. Another issue is that the original broadcast is different to the DVD's of Z, they change line and music pieces. The original single DVD's use the broadcast audio and trust me its way worse (I own the single DVD's instead of the season sets, 86 DVD's in total. Yes it was a nightmare to collect them all)
Sabat’s old Vegeta was way better than his current. He sounded more distinct and regal which fits his status as president nice. His new one sounds too much like his regular voice.
Bro are you being biased cuz it seems to me Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z Kai is pretty good both of them are you just peeking out which one is suited for you
My biggest problem with Z is the buu saga, specifically the music from Vegito -> Kidd buu fights. Using the DBSuper Vegito theme 30 times in the span of 5 episodes is lame.
You guys were too generous to Kai with the music. Final chapters OST is really off in a lot of the scenes. Sometimes it hits the mark but other times there's a lot of tonal clash, dunno if it was rushed or they were just recycling from Super or soemthing. In the Vegeta sacrifice all the dialogue is basically drowned by the music. That's not good. Z handled the mixing better. Point Z. For SS3, dunno why that clip had a different score when the Falconer one is the more well known one. It's also a way better music piece than Kai's. And Goku does a bit too much explaining in the Kai one for how straining 3 is supposed to be. Point Z. Gonna also hard disagree, Z's Super Buu-Buuhan voice acting fits him better. Kid Buu's voice in Z is also much better, a lot more chaotic. Kai sounds too forced. Not fond of Z Vegito's theme but Goku's dialogue is better "they can't even DIE", though. Point Kai still. Vegeta vs Kid Buu, hell no, the music feels like Vegeta's winning-a hard contrast to what's actually happening. The classic theme fits as Vegeta's defiantly fighting Buu without a chance of winning. Z steals it.
Key is clearly a Kai fanboy so it’s already a given how his ranking will be, but Tune basically agreed with everything Key said which kinda took away from the point of doing a duo video..I felt it was a lot of scenes where they were giving Kai points based off bias opinions
@@KeyReviewsOfficial well for starters I thought you gave Kai some points it shouldn’t have got based off the music..To go even further I think Kai has won every matchup you’ve done since you started this series which kinda proves my point of you being a fanboy of Kai..Don’t get me wrong I’m not mad if you are a fanboy of Kai cause Kai is good in its own right, I just feel like you give Kai a little too much credit at times..I like your work so it’s no knock to you, but my point is before I even clicked the video I already knew you was gonna give Kai the W lol
55:09 I'm probably one of only people who actually prefer kai's version more, I like how it doesn't take much time for Gotenks to transform into ssj3 and how he can casually transform into the form
z was way better than it ever was supposed to be. the music in the eng dub was something that reminds of orchestra in movies. there was always in the backround, constantly changing to fit the tone of the scene. the voices and deliveries from the actors were mostly perfect. even though its visible to the naked eye (or ear) how much more experience the have now, they did a great job back then. And then again... vegetas voice.. i miss the way chris used to voice him. that breathy soft rasp, that was way more natural sounding. nowadays it fills that he plays the guy that plays vegeta, he just distorts his voice, while deepening it a bit less than what he does with piccolo. to all the singers that use vocal distortion you will get me way more, that forward feeling placement on the throat, that makes that breathy hoarse voice, versus that deep almost like muscle flexing thing he does with piccolo and vegeta nowadays. it just doesnt sound the same.
40:48 Seriously you used the clip with Japanese ost instead of the fucking gold Super Saiyan 3 theme Such a disappointment Sean shimmel nailed the scene in the original dub along with faulcorner music was just Perfect 😢 I guess you did this so you can choose Kai 😢
Most of the dialogue in Dragon Ball Z is so monotone. The voice acting in Dragon Ball Z Kai is so much better. The spectators sounds so dead and monotone. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, it's more hopeful.
The old dubs for anime in the 90s and 2000s I grew up with them, but most of them were heavily Americanized and censored. I don't watch anime in Japanese but I do ig knowledge that English dub now is so much better voice acting wise then it was 20 to 30 years ago.
Big shoutout to BigTune for help with this video but here's our opinion on these iconic scenes. let me know what your score would've looked like.
Awesome video!
I’d watch the Z version just for Sabats’s original portrayal of Vegeta alone
I feel Sabat could at least try to make Vegeta sound younger whenever he's voicing the Saiyan and Namek saga versions of him,

Can you please tell the name of music at the beginning/commentary moments of video. 0:18 - 0:48
For some scenes you switched between the Kikuchi score and Faulconer score. Was that an error or intentional?
It was because of the website we used. I used that same site to make the Cell saga video and it had the Faulconer score, so I assumed the Buu saga was the same. For a while, I thought the Faulconer score had a few tracks from the Kikuchi score. Later I realized that some episodes had different scores, but by then we were too far into the project lol
@@KeyReviewsOfficial Lol. This is why I don’t use websites like that for stuff I do. Not trying to be mean. I understand. I’m just saying
I thought the music during Gohans transformation vs Kibito in OG Z was the coolest shit of all time as a kid lol I had the episode on VHS and watched it so many times
Z is the best
Problem with kai final chapters that plagues it HARD, is the shared weird upbeat soundtrack with super
Am i the only sub watcher watching this video?
I really don't know how any of you guys can pick any scene from Kai over Z, and I'm a reasonable person. Every vegeta scene he says the same thing in Kai, just his fight with goku, he barely says the other 75% of other dialogue explaining his anguish. Plus Z's music.
I love that people are finally accepting that Kai is superior. But i understand that some people still won't give in, because it just depends on what you grew up with.
I love these Dragon Ball Z dubs!
40:34 Why didn’t y’all use the Bruce Faulconer score for this 😂
It seems that the OG Z dub voice acting had improved by the time of the Buu Saga.
I’d say my only note is that adult Gohan SSJ2’s Z dialogue is slightly more “intellectual” showing his difference from Goku
my only request is to not use an iphone text message notification sounds for the tally haha! im like who tf is texting me at 3 am??
Based name bro, God bless
Z was a moment in time that could never be replicated.
WHY DIDNT YALL USE THE BRUCE FAULCONER???
They use the Japanese soundtrack for this
Supreme kai admits technically that buu should be stronger than beerus
Kai has better experience of dialogue
But I also enjoy the Screams better in Z by vegeta his voice in Kai just is different in pitch grudge and I prefer his manly voice From Z.
I DONT mind the filler as it’s fun to watch personal opinion.
I think the music is better in dbz for me tbh, While music in Kai either don’t fit the scene or personal taste, but that’s just because I don’t listen to japan music and etc, it’s just more American so it makes sense, the songs are good, but they’re just not my taste 😊
Overall Z is my favorite because of goku’s voice as well in buu saga, especially the spirit bomb.
Yes it was a nightmare to collect them all)
I agree wìth people giving Goku their energy sounds better in Dragon Ball Z Kai. In Z its so monotone.
Sabat’s old Vegeta was way better than his current. He sounded more distinct and regal which fits his status as president nice. His new one sounds too much like his regular voice.
Bro are you being biased cuz it seems to me Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z Kai is pretty good both of them are you just peeking out which one is suited for you
If goku stayed dead this show woulda been peak
It's honesly the tone of the actors i didn't like or the new voice cast for characters like Popo, Bulma, and Gohan
My biggest problem with Z is the buu saga, specifically the music from Vegito -> Kidd buu fights. Using the DBSuper Vegito theme 30 times in the span of 5 episodes is lame.
Will you be watching the Ocean dub at some point?
@@justahologram2230 I wasn't really planning on it? Would you recommend it and where would I even find that version?
@shinsukecorbin425 😭 What scene did I give kai a biased point
@@KeyReviewsOfficial well for starters I thought you gave Kai some points it shouldn’t have got based off the music..To go even further I think Kai has won every matchup you’ve done since you started this series which kinda proves my point of you being a fanboy of Kai..Don’t get me wrong I’m not mad if you are a fanboy of Kai cause Kai is good in its own right, I just feel like you give Kai a little too much credit at times..I like your work so it’s no knock to you, but my point is before I even clicked the video I already knew you was gonna give Kai the W lol
Kai final chapters fell off in writing. Kai was so good it made me sad
Idk why but Kai always sounded like they were trying too hard. It’s Z for me!
Dragon ball Kai is not the original and Vegita had a different voice. I have VHS tapes of DBZ bought with original musica and voice actor
Personally I love the kai version for its more clean and smoother transitions
Idk why but Kai always sounded like they were trying too hard. Z for me!
Kai Saiyan Saga > Z
Kai Frieza Saga > Z
Kai Cell Saga > Z
Kai Buu Saga < Z
Your Kai glazing is fucking nuts bro
My favorite English Goku is Peter Kelamis. This shows my age 😆
55:09 I'm probably one of only people who actually prefer kai's version more, I like how it doesn't take much time for Gotenks to transform into ssj3 and how he can casually transform into the form
I unsubscribe I didn't like how entertaining this was, I felt bored but I praise the editing and facts in the video
Most of Kai's voice acting sound like they trying too hard. Its not naturally delivered as Z is even though Z has it flaws as well
@Napolii69 I've seen comments like this a few times, but I can never understand how kai sounds "Try hard."
I am sorry, but Baba's voice in Dragon Ball Z is terrible.
z was way better than it ever was supposed to be. the music in the eng dub was something that reminds of orchestra in movies. there was always in the backround, constantly changing to fit the tone of the scene. the voices and deliveries from the actors were mostly perfect. even though its visible to the naked eye (or ear) how much more experience the have now, they did a great job back then.
Buu saga dub kai on the other hand sucks
I see you were leaning towards z but like in your other videos I see you got biased with the kai version 🤣 but respect your opinion
40:48 Seriously you used the clip with Japanese ost instead of the fucking gold Super Saiyan 3 theme
Such a disappointment
Sean shimmel nailed the scene in the original dub along with faulcorner music was just Perfect 😢
I guess you did this so you can choose Kai 😢
@@SwastikBiswas-b3r Z got the point?
Z unrated 1#
Really hate Kai ngl
ive never seen it. i might watch it one day just to say i did but not looking forward to it that much
Z is definitely better...music included, blood, emotion is just Different.
Z 9000%
I agree
Most of the dialogue in Dragon Ball Z is so monotone. The voice acting in Dragon Ball Z Kai is so much better. The spectators sounds so dead and monotone. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, it's more hopeful.
The old dubs for anime in the 90s and 2000s I grew up with them, but most of them were heavily Americanized and censored. I don't watch anime in Japanese but I do ig knowledge that English dub now is so much better voice acting wise then it was 20 to 30 years ago.
Z, it's not even a fucking comparison
I am sorry, but Baba's voice in Dragon Ball Z is terrible.
