Fender Ed O'Brien (Radiohead) Sustainer Signature Stratocaster - Review & Demo

  • In this video, Sam takes a look at the new Fender Ed O'Brien, guitarist with Radiohead, signature Stratocaster...
    Check it out here: www.pmtonline....
Surprisingly for such a huge band, the Ed O'Brien Strat is the first ever Radiohead signature model. It's loosely based on his favourite guitar for live work, a customised Eric Clapton Strat, and features a Fernandes Sutainer pickup which, when combined with effects, allows him to create those beautiful, ethereal soundscapes which are such an essential part of the distinctive Radiohead sound.
Spec-wise, this fantastic guitar features an Alder body, bolt-on Maple neck with a meaty 10/56 "V" profile, vintage-style tuners and a vintage synchronised tremolo. Alongside the sustainer pickup are a Texas Special single-coil in the middle position and a Seymour Duncan JB Jnr humbucker at the bridge, offering a huge range of tonal possibilities.
The Sustainer pickup works in the same way as an eBow, by creating a magnetic field to resonate and vibrate the strings...but whereas an eBow can only sustain single strings, a Fernandes pickup can sustain chords! It's controlled by two additional switches, the first turns the pickup on and off, whilst the second toggles between sustaining either fundamental notes, harmonic notes or a mix of both.
Cosmetically, for a signature model it's pretty simple, no flashy finishes of logos, just a subtle "Flower Of Life" engraving on the neck plate. Supplied with a Fender gig bag.
Take a quick look and listen with PMTVUK and try one for yourself at your local Professional Music Technology...

Fun Fact: This guitar has exactly the same circuit and pickup configuration as the Jazzmaster shaped Fernandes guitar, that The Edge (U2) played on the Popmart tour back in 1997/98.

      And relating to that....
The Strat Ed O'Brien used during the OK Computer tour as we know was a Clapton signature, but the Strat The Edge used on the Zoo tour was also a Clapton Signature (probably what gave O'Brien the inspiration to buy it)

You blew the Anderton's non-review of this into the weeds. Not a guitar for everyone, but one that can go places where a standard Strat could not venture.

Flower of Life is actually a term coined by Drunvalo Melchizedek in his book The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life. It's related to sacred geometry which it makes a lot of sense in this kind of guitar, with all the ethereal sounds you can take out of it!

I own an American strat but primarily play my offset tele squier. Nothing wrong with a cheap guitar if it’s made well, and skill is always more important than gear. Earn your skill slowly and obsessively like everyone else, it’s worth it. If it were easy everyone could do it and then it wouldn’t be special. These guys played for hours alone in their bedrooms and spent years acquiring their skill 1 hour at a time jamming and learning along the way. You can do it.

Me a synthesist actually ,he handed it to me and off I freaking went had it going from a reeves Gabrel distortion engine into a Meris Polymoon. He was astounded. Yep works just fine for me. This guitar is a lot like Zappa's yellow strat which is something I've been looking for... I also happen to really like white strats and maple fingerboards so it's perfect. The pricetag isn't bad either. I'd replace the bridge with a Vee Blade though. Maybe put locking tuners on it. Besides Schecter there aren't many affordable guitars equipped with sustainers out there. I think I'll be buying this

There's an interview where he said he used it since 1996 and if Muse has copied Radiohead they have failed miserably at it never got to a Kid A phase which would actually make me want to listen to them. Instead they've only gone downwards and bokers at the same time.

Man, very, very nice work on all of those ok computer lines as well as the implementation of the sustainer! Absolutely fantastic! My respect goes out to you! I am in the midst of building this Ed O'Brian strat out of a stock Mexican strat. Everything will be the same except for the standard location of the 1/4" jack. I'm using the Fernandes FSK-401 kit and I'm installing locking tuners, the Tusq graphite nut and a Schaller 2 point floating trem.
Has anyone tried that Vega-Trem unit? I am having a hard time justifying 300.00 for a trem. It may be great, I don't know. However we all know that they have maybe a maximum of 100.00 into the making of each unit. Approximately 200.00 per unit is profit. I'm a machinist so I know and understand the process. They knock out each piece on a CNC unit. I believe that they probably pay less per trem but I'll be overly safe in saying 100.00 per unit. 200.00 in profit per unit is a HUGE markup. I'm talking to musicians who aren't independently wealthy. I'm asking the everyday Joe who gets to play out 3 to 4 times a month. What are your thoughts please?

Is this guitar available in this color but with nitrocellulose paint, so it gradually yellows out into that awesome cream color, instead of poly paint, (I dont want poly paint, cant stand it) anyone know?

Hi and thanks for the review! I found out that the Fernandes Neck Pickup is more hot than the JB Humbucker, can you confirm that? Therefore I missed the claasic Strat-tone!? Comments are welcome! Thanks and cheers
