After 11 straight misses, New Zealand's Hamish Kerr wins lengthy jump-off for high jump gold
First they put the bar up higher. Then they lowered it.
Wherever they put the bar, American Shelby McEwen and world indoor champion Hamish Kerr of New Zealand couldn’t clear it. The two high jumpers, who could have decided to tie and both get a gold medal, instead put fans through an interminable jump-off for the gold at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
The two men had 11 straight misses - so many that there wasn’t enough room on the scoreboard for all the Xs - in regulation and the jump-off. The bar was lowered twice during the jump-off, and Kerr finally broke the streak of failures when he got over 2.34 meters (7 feet, 8 inches) to take the gold.
“To do it the way I did it was just amazing,” Kerr said. “It was crazy.”
McEwen was left with the silver, both he and Kerr having cleared 2.36 (7 feet, 8.75 inches).
At the Tokyo Olympics, a similar scenario played out and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy decided to accept the tie.
Barshim took the bronze Saturday at 2.34. Tamberi was eliminated early on.

    4 - Stefano Sottile - Italy - 2.34m

    8 - Tihomir Ivanov - Bulgaria - 2.27m
“I have so much respect for what they did in Tokyo. But I always thought that to add to the story and to be able to be given the chance to actually do the jump-off would be so amazing,” Kerr said. “I knew straight away that we were going to make history and we did that.
“I’m pretty sure Shelby was in the same mindset because we just looked at each other and it was pretty simple,” Kerr added. “We both just nodded and off we went.”
Added McEwen, “We talked to each other, and he was like, ‘Let’s jump off.’ And I was like, ‘I’m all for it.’”
Kerr celebrated by running around the field in the center of the Stade de France deliriously.
They both missed at 2.38 in the first round of the jump-off, another two misses at 2.36 and McEwen missed at 2.34 before Kerr finally ended the first competition of the night only moments before the women’s 4x400 relay concluded the last session of track and field at the Stade de France.
“If I hadn’t cleared that jump or one very soon, we probably still would be out there,” Kerr said.
McEwen said he thought “we both got a little fatigued there at the end,” adding that he was thinking about the $50,000 prize for first place. “Most definitely, I got a family to feed. But, hey, we’re going to get back to the drawing boards and get better.”
Earlier, Tamberi failed on all three of his attempts at 2.27 - only the second height of the competition. He covered his face with his hands in disappointment and then Barshim came over to console his good friend.

Sherwin is an example of how not to manage your career. He had a chance of Olympic gold and threw the medal away and decided on arrogance instead and lost it. Now he may not get that opportunity again. Natural selection is real. Whoever is managing him as well as the American athletics association need to think twice about selecting him. The USA could have beaten China in the medals but the stupid athlete decided he didn’t want the gold. What sponsor will sponsor such a person. The man literally threw away all the sponsorship he could have gotten. Dumb doesn’t begin to describe him.

They're competitors - so let them compete if they want to.. They've earned the right to decide how to finish the event, when you can jump more than 2.36m and face a jump-off for an Olympic medal then you can decide what is right or wrong for you... until then, you've no right to question them.
... and btw, they will both remain 2024 Olympic medallists for their entire lives, and they will remember, speak about, and be spoken about for these medals for their entire lives... They, nor anyone else, could care less if you remember them or not, they don't even know who you are...

Why? well, just like the zen of archery he waits until he gets the Divine nod--and you can visibly see him become of IT and then he goes!! Only that one time when he ran under the bar, I could tell he was not walking with GOD! Many athletes have the Physique to do the event but they know not how to abide in their CENTER X and wait for the NOD--where like Bruce Lee, to have ALL Technique is to have no technique AKA God's technique!! Thank you Kerr for BEING THERE!!!

In the rules of high jump, Hamish Kerr should have won without needing the jump off. As far as I'm aware, the rules have not significantly changed regarding a tie. Hamish cleared the previous height of 2.36 on his first attempt , Shelby took 3 attempts. That should have sealed the deal for Hamish. But because that was reversed for the height before that, 2.34, with Hamish taking 3 attempts and Shelby clearing it on his third
. Both competitors had the same number of failed attempts ie 2 each but at different heights and that's what the jump off was based upon. But in the rule book, I used to compete in the high jump, it goes on count back, how many attempts each competitor took at the last cleared height, 2.36. With that info, Hamish should have won without the need for a jump off. So all in all, the right guy won in the end.
And btw, this clip is from the Tokyo 2020 (2021) Olympics and not from Paris!
