Another point to the chicken knife is that Brave blade increases strenght by 5 and chicken knife speed by 5 and increasing speed is more valuable in FF V as you get more turns
The assassin's dagger's instant death ability is also a detriment if you're fighting undead, since if it triggers the monster will be completely healed.
And when the monster is undead, the instant death effect ALWAYS triggers, so unless you use Rapid Fire or use the twin lance to override the death effect the same way it does with the Chicken Knife, good luck trying to take out an undead with it.
There is/was a bug in Pixel Remaster version of the game that allows you to trigger the dialogue twice. This way, you could either grab two Brave Blades, two Chicken Knives, or either one.
Counter argument: In a four job fiesta scenario and from a pure damage output point of view (ie. not considering the logistics of powering up/down the weapons), you should pick the Brave Blade if you rolled Knight and none of the following classes: Mystic Knight, Ranger, Dancer, or (if and ONLY if you're playing a PR version that lets you get two Chicken Knives) Ninja. This is because Knight comes pre-packaged with a damage doubling ability for Brave Blade, while most classes do not have one for the knife, so unless you rolled one of the aforementioned classes which do have the ability to (more than double) the damage of Chicken Knife, a 2x damage Brave Blade will be superior to 1x (or even 0.75x, considering that random Flee is a thing and only a few classes have abilties that turn it off) Chicken Knife.
That's a very good point, I neglected to consider Doublegrip. You do have to ditch the shield though, and it's kinda funny that you have to get such a specific job spread to make it worth it, plus you still have to never flee (unless you're playing PR), BUT that is a legitimate use case.
for my very first run of the game which was fairly recently, i actually went with the brave blade since i wasn't really ever fleeing encounters and i was using a knight or two as beefy frontliners with there two handed ability. but looking forwards if i do more runs/challenges ill probably pick the chicken knife in future for its more general utility in the games combat scope.
The Teleport/Exit spell also counts as a Flee if you use it in battle, and so does the Hide ability if everyone who is alive uses it in a battle since you will Flee from that battle. Added to your Scram and Smoke, that's 4 ways to guaranteed Flee from escapable battles, although the last one you might not bother unless you're fairly desperate with your Fiesta team. Personally, by the time I get the Chicken Knife I'm using it to try and run away from random fights more than I am to try and kill those random enemies.
I thought on my first SNES playthrough of this game that I’d be grinding enough job points from battles to justify picking the Brave Blade for such occasions. Even when Bartz was generally a knight for much of my playthrough, realizing the downsides of the Brave Blade after receiving it was what made me leave it in the deep trenches of my inventory for using the Excalibur instead.
A strange quirk about the chicken knife damage formula is that it has no randomness. It will always deal the exact same amount of damage if the same character attacks twice with it. Another thing I discovered with the CK was that it is possible to deal so much damage with it that it overflows and ends up dealing less than 9999. This only happens if with a fully powered chicken knife in the front row with a sword dance after sing has been used to max out level, strength and speed. So it's more of a trivia than anything else, but you might watch out for it if you get bard and dancer in a FJF
The only time where I met the dude that allows you to pick one, I picked the brave blade because in my head picking the chicken knife would inadvertently mean that I'm a coward D: Also I prefer swords over knifes because knives look dinky and weak imo
A lot of the game's best endgame weapons are knight swords so the Brave Blade is redundant, especially in the versions that have the bonus content, unless you really need that power boost early. But you probably can handle the Pyramid without too much trouble if you have a Bard with Requiem.
People always say that knives not using your agility is a "bug," but has anyone ever confirmed this? I find it equally possible that the game designers intentionally disabled that part of the damage calculation of most knives in the code after seeing that the formula they were using made knives WAY too strong compared to other weapons, but left it in the chicken knife as a treat for players who were able to find it.
That is a good point, there's a mod that makes all knives work like chicken knife and apparently it makes knives TOO good. But if you believe the wiki, there's other weapon types that also have this "1 or 0 agility" thing, and I feel like it wouldn't make as much sense for those. Still worth considering, though.
It is considered as a "bug" because leveling up can be a detriment to your attack multiplier when Agility is only occasionally factored 0 or 1 in the formula. Knives, Bows, and Whips use the same damage formula, and thus are affected with this "bug".
its a bug. the reason it happens is because on the game, the game reads 1 less bit than usual when adding agility. its possible they ran into the bug before they put the game into the cart (testing on computers) and they decided to compensate by upping the atk power of the knives, because they tend to keep pace with swords a lot more than you would think.
@@Applemangh There's lots of things that weren't changed in PR, like the "Boost all elements" Rod and Bell not boosting Water damage, or this Agility thing, or other small things I can't remember.

Yeah to make it "better", it needs to have some kind of special gimmick. Or at least make the chicken knife not a knife, so there's actually a reason to pick the other one during FJFs, because every single party can use those.

The best method is probably to run a LOT as you go, only fighting the most efficient/easy enemies along the way. Leave the goblin trap chest in Tule alone and when you get to the merged world you can use it for escape grinding the CK the rest of the way. There are other spots where you can activate fights instantly over and over as well. Heck, I know people who did a full Tule chest grind at the start and then kept that as a separate save file so every team starts with enough runs for the CK to be maxed when you get it.

Knight swords SHOULD be the best pound for pound based on their exclusivity alone. There isn't even a skill to gain their use like ribbons. I'd make the damage calc use double str for all K swords. This gives a late game use for the knight and let's its damage stand out. Considering the abusive nonsense you can do with gil toss and throw + any magic skill I don't feel bad about this change.
Yes the equip swords ability gives access to all kinds of swords in the game be it normal swords or the especial swords that onily the knight can usually equip like the Excalibur for example.
Some of the "Equip" abilities are also more nuanced: - Equip Sword gives you access to Swords and Knight Swords - Equip Rods gives you access to Rods, Staves, and Flails - Equip Riboons gives you access to Ribbons, dancing set, and Man-Eater knife
I'm going to fire up my game because I would have bet the farm on the idea that swords only came from the equip swords ability, though I know the E ribbon gives the entire dancer exclusive gear set. Will post an update. @@sertiana2512

I always picked the Brave Blade JUST SO I WOULDN'T BE TEMPTED to use that stupid knife. ("You might not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.")
Y'know, what's so sad is that in the original Dissidia Final Fantasy game, Bartz limit break attack (that's what I call it) when inputed successfully, has him use the "Brave Blade" weapon instead of the chicken knife, which is wrong on Square-Enix's side (at least back then). Now I realized that the "Brave Blade" WAS supposed to be able to gain back power if you fought more battles consecutively than fleeing constantly, the sword should be able to gain back its max power. The chicken knife is the same way. It's meant to increase its power the more you flee, which comes with its own ability (to "Flee"). However, once you engage in a battle even once, the knife was meant to deteriorate. The code was either not implemented right, or there was a bug that caused the code to not work, making the chicken knife becoming the absolute weapon. Also, Suprapika, you might have forgotten that Shinryu guards a chest that has the "Ragnarok" blade, which is the 2nd most powerful Knight sword in the game, giving a +140 attack power than an Excalibur's +110 attack power and +5 Strength (I think).
I have thought that it was notable that Bartz' weapon in Dissidia was the Brave Blade, but I mean, everyone in that game uses a sword, so. Also yes, I think Ragnarok is the strongest weapon in the game, but you only get it from a bonus boss or a steal from the final boss, so I barely consider it when I play this game. I did use it in the level 1 run at least.
personally i think its fantastic characterization to have bartz use the brave blade in dissidia, and later on in 012 gilgamesh has a chance to use the chicken knife on some of his attacks it pretty much says that bartz doesnt back down, and references the numerous times gilgamesh just decides to run away to save his own ass lol its good stuff
Brave Sword is the worst weapon in FF5 hands down, the only two reasons that you should grab is, if you are doing a four job feista and one of the jobs you get is knight and the other jobs combine are too weak to beat Shinryu or You are using RetroAchievements and you pick it up for the Achievement

You can get it with the use swords from knight in Pixel Remaster, haven't tested in older versions
I swear that the Knight's "equip swords" ability gives access to Knight Swords, I should double check.
Yes the equip swords ability gives access to all kinds of swords in the game be it normal swords or the especial swords that onily the knight can usually equip like the Excalibur for example.
Some of the "Equip" abilities are also more nuanced:
- Equip Sword gives you access to Swords and Knight Swords
- Equip Rods gives you access to Rods, Staves, and Flails
- Equip Riboons gives you access to Ribbons, dancing set, and Man-Eater knife
I'm going to fire up my game because I would have bet the farm on the idea that swords only came from the equip swords ability, though I know the E ribbon gives the entire dancer exclusive gear set. Will post an update. @@sertiana2512
I wonder if in the year 3000 we will have a new final fantasy with the exact same job system as ffv. Just with extra jobs.
And you STILL only unlock them after the final boss.
Well, bravely games are okay, im trying to get into ogre battle as well. Need more job games though. Think i heard of one on steam too. Crystal something.
People have been telling me Crystal Project on Steam is good, still haven't bought it because I have my own gaming backlog to get through, but it's an eventuality.
I also prefer the Chicken Knife to the Assassin's Dagger, because damage.
Also, why isn't Sasuke's Katana a pair? And why can't we 2H spears? Odd.
Good stuff bro, God bless ya and Jesus loves ya :)
I always picked the Brave Blade JUST SO I WOULDN'T BE TEMPTED to use that stupid knife. ("You might not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.")
rapid fire chicken knife gang
Fun fact, in the pixel remaster the brave blade can build it's strength back up if you ran at some points.
did you watch the video before typing this? 1:18
I just like swords better lol
Except the freaks like me, who do no-flee playthroughs.
I feel like that would make every playthrough take like twice as long, but you'll never be hurting for levels.
True Bravery is not being a Chicken and not choose at all.
I did use it in the level 1 run at least.
personally i think its fantastic characterization to have bartz use the brave blade in dissidia, and later on in 012 gilgamesh has a chance to use the chicken knife on some of his attacks
it pretty much says that bartz doesnt back down, and references the numerous times gilgamesh just decides to run away to save his own ass lol its good stuff
@@greenguyquint I actually totally forgot that Gilgamesh used it, his whole "different weapons" gimmick was cool.
I dunno about "worst weapon", that's a bit too harsh; there's way worse in this game, like most of the harps, as one random example.
They are both pretty bad honestly because I'm never not running away enough for the brave blade to be good and I'm never running away enough for the chicken knife to be good.
At least with the speedup key and !Flee, it's not hard to grind it. Or you could just play like me and run away from most battles throughout the game.
Did the game shark allow you to get as many of them as you can?
I mean yeah you can probably just hack in 99 of them if you wanted.
