Your cousin walks into your room, he’s done with his first car amp. He throws it on your desk and says, there you go loser. It’s all scratched up, you don’t even have a car, you are 14. You have selected your first amplifier.
This information is extremely helpful. I've always appreciated Crutchfield and how much effort you guys put into making sure the customer makes an informed decision.
So helpful, thank you! I’ve just purchased 4 speakers,an amp and a sub from you guys. I really appreciate that you offer so much educational material and guidance. You’re a lot more than a store and it’s been a huge help. I’ve never done anything like this so the info is definitely needed
Great video. Very informative. I was thinking of just adding a single 12" or 2 -10" sub box. Nothing huge. So many options nowadays. When I was teenager we used home speakers in our trunks and Pawn Shop amplifiers. 😂
This is great, I love these tutorials. I'll keep watching them as long as yall keep making them! Let's see one on everything you sell! Crutchfield is the best
Really impressive video, this guy's speaking voice is great and there was clearly a script and production involved. I learned a lot that I might have tuned out for if the presenter and the information wasn't so clear and concise.
Thanks. That was great. I appreciated that your power recommendation for amps was conservative as many people think they need 1000W amps. Also, amps should be at or below the speaker ratings. So many people think that you need amps rated higher than the continuous RMS rating of the speakers.
Thats not true you actually want to have more rms power from the amp than the speakers because then you dont need to push the amp that hard to get the power needed but if you have amp with lower rms power you are more likely to push it too hard and break your amp or speakers
Nick your gonna blow amps by overworking them to push your speakers. These guys sell audio equipment. That's why they give the limited explanation they do. So you can buy more from them with the feeling that it's spent well instead of actually teaching you the truth.
@@josequilez5449 im wanting to buy 4 Sylvester’s rated at 130 rms with two extra tweeters , so should I get a 4 channel 140rms 4 ohm each channel or a 75 rms 4ohm 4 channels
I like those 2 white KRK Rokit speakers in the background. I used to have the black ones back when I had a mini home “music studio” in my closet. LOL. It was a walk in closet, so, yeah.
choose based on your financial capability. other than that, look at your car specifications like electrical system power (you might want to add additional battery and after that can consider power capacitors), so your audio system doesn't short your car electrical capacity even at max volume. you also better use 3x more powerful amp than your speaker RMS because most amplifier will start to produce more than 1% THD after more than 1/3 of total amp power. this is to ensure you can maintain your low distortion listening experience and not to be worried about harsher sound and even clipping your amplifier, as long as you set the small volume knob at 1/3. keep calibrate the amp according to the head unit spec so you can be sure it doesn't go more than the power threshold you've set. if the overall volume is too low, you can always compromise your sq for bigger sound but at higher THD anytime. but make sure the speaker RMS is matching if not more so to be on the safe side.
go for the bigest you can afford! it is always good the have extra power in case you should decide to go for some thing big ! carstereo is a fun thing.. once you get into it, you just want more. when you feel that hard bass, you just feels so many emotions at the same time :D
I have (jbl stadium gto 930) with 110w RMS And 330 peak per pair, and they support 96 db sensitivity with 2 ohm. Please suggest me a best amp plz................. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Are watts equivalent to decibel values? If they are how many decibels would a 50 watt speaker with a 50 watt amplifier produce? Just wondering because I wouldn't want really quiet speakers.
Watts are not equivalent to decibels and there is a lot that comes into figuring out the loudest a system can play including the sensitivity of the speaker. Typically, that measurement is the decibel level give with 1 watt played and and standing 1 meter away. Each time that power is doubled (i.1. 1 x 2 = 2 watts, 2 x 2 = 4 watts, etc...), the maximum decibels go up by 3.
Just bought a 1979 Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon, I want to put in some alpine brand audio equipment in it such as radio/video for back up camera, maybe some subs as well , where should I start ? I want to keep it simple and clean as well as cost efficient ,
The best place to start with an older model vehicle like this one is the radio and checking if a newer model can be installed. Is the dash still designed for a shaft style radio?
Question: I recently picked up a SD 1200.4 thinking it was a 4 ohm version but found out it was the 2 ohm version. this DRASTICALLY changes the power per channel at each ohm variance. the speakers I want to push are 100 RMS but 250 PEAK. I can do 138 per channel running them each on their own channel (running 4 speakers all the same make/model)... one place tells me to run bridged and parallel. but if they exchange my amp for the 4 ohm version I would have 198 per channel at 4 ohm. I get others saying the current amp wont be enough, and yet others saying the current one will be to much in the video it talks about speakers having "Max RMS" and I get the 75-100% thing. but with the RMS having one rating and then my "peak" being a very different number... which rating do I use? and what wiring method would be best. I can exchange straight across for the other amp. should I get the other amp or stay with what I have and wire it in a specific way?
Hii, A great information on speakers and amplifier. I have already bought Infinity kappa 60 csx component speakers 6.5" for front doors. And no subwoofer planned. I need a perfect amplifier for that may be 2 channel. My speaker specs are Infinity Kappa 60CSX 6.5" 2-Way Component Speaker System (300 W 100 RMS). Kindly suggest best amplifier for it. thanks in advance.
I have that alpine s-a60m i love it so much I wanted a second one to bridge and really get things shaking loose!!!! its pushing 1 10 and 1 12 no problem.
Back in 1991 I tried a car audio system in one of specialty shops. It was a Soundstream amp and speakers with Alpine head unit. Best sound ever. I never liked Kenwood amps, they sounded flat. Rockford Fosgate Punch 150 was great. What's equivalent today? What speakers/amps have full, rich sound?
Hello i have a question.....I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze . I am replacing all 4 doors speakers with (kicker-6 3/4 with 240 watts peak) and i'am trying to install 2 6x9 Rockford fosgate 3-way Coaxel single (4 OHM) 130 watts peak (65W RMS) on the rear deck...mind you the vehicle when i bought it didn't come with rear speakers or(wiring) and no holes were made on the panel only on the main base of the vehicle. So i'am trying to figure what type of amp should i get to support these speakers along in the future if i wanted to add a sub also. Thank you in advance for any help.
It sounds like you're going to be running a total of 6 speakers. Do you know what model Kicker and Rockford Fosgate speakers those are? We want to match the speakers to the amp based on the rms power and not the peak power. Also are you using your stock radio or an aftermarket radio with this set up?
Hi Crutchfield. A few questions for you: 1) I currently have one X-12 V.2 D4 - Sundown Audio 12" 1500W RMS DVC 4-Ohm X V.2 Series Subwoofer in a custom ported enclosure tuned to 32 Hz. What monoblock amplifier do I need to provide sufficient quality power? 2) I eventually plan on adding a second Sundown Audio subwoofer for a total of two subwoofers, but that won't be for about 7-8 months from now. What monoblock amp do you recommend to power the 2 subwoofers previously mentioned?
Based on those specifications, we only offer one amp that can power two: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_57525001CP/item.html The single sub setup can be powered with an amp that gives it 70% of the top RMS power. That's the minimum we recommend for good performance. This means 1075 watts RMS is the minimum making this amp able to sufficiently power one sub: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_301HCP1DK/item.html
Trying to find a amp to power 4 kicker cs 6.5 door speakers any recommendations have a aftermarket dasaita android head unit with rca connection in back

I got a Kenwood Apple ready stereo that plays dvd 📀. I have ford factory speakers (4). I would like all speakers and a subwoofer installed. Do I need the 5 channel, because of the 4 speakers and sun? Is asylum “the big one” good ?
What is the best amplifier to get to power my TRF LWT693 (80w rms) speakers and KENWOOD KSC-W1200B(300w rms) subwoofer from the Pioneer MVH-S420BT radio?? I’m lost
Very nice video! I'm not so sure on your statement that states the amps rms power should be 1 for 1 with the speaker rms power. I tried that and was underwhelmed! My Joying 50 w rms hu was barely driving my JVC 50 W mid speakers. I added a 100 wrms Recoil amp and the sound blows the doors off the previous set!
50 Watt RMS is hard to come by from the amp built into a radio! That is, on average, the peak watts output by a radio. Which model Joying radio did you get?
@crutchfield It has a 15 amp fuse. So 200 x 4 may be a stretch. More like 150 x 4 equalling 37.5 per channel rms. It wasn't really driving the JVC 50wrms at all. It's hitting very hard now with the Recoil amp. Got me second guessing whether I want that JBL Basspro spare tire sub! Anyway, thank you for your response and content overall!
I want to power my aftermarket door speakers, tweeters and super tweeters in my truck. The speakers is 35 rms.The Super tweeters is 200W max power,And the tweeters is 350w maximum music power. What size amp should i get with the right channel and rms..Hope you can understand my poor English
Hey Crutchfield, I've been going back in forth "trying to choose a AMPLIFIER(?)" so I don't waste money. My planned setup consist of: HU: Alpine ILX-W60 Frt Spkrs & Rr Speakers: Kicker 46CSC674 100 Watts RMS(300peakpower) Subwoofer: [2] 10" Kicker CompVR 43CVR102 •Dual 2ohm voice coils •100-300Watts 175per coil "WHICH AMPLIFIER DO YOU RECOMMEND & HOW SHOULD I CHANNEL IT?" Thanks!
Hi Arick! We can definitely help with that. What vehicle will that setup be going in? Do you prefer a single 5-channel amplifier or a separate 4-channel and mono amplifier?
@@crutchfield This setup is going into a Civic Sedan. I would prefer 1 single amplifier, but again I mentioned 2 10" Subs. Would that mean I would need a 6-channel in that case? Also I've been thinking worse case scenario, would I that cause me to possibly need a battery + alternator upgrade. Or should I just keep things simple with one 12" sub? And why? Thanks again!
The best design I can think of for powering 4 speakers and 2 subs is a 5 channel amp as the 5th channel typically outputs hundreds of watts. Given those speakers and the two subwoofers you listed, we do currently have an amp that is a very good match for them and both subwoofer being connected to the same channel. It's the Rockford Fosgate Power T1000X5ad amp found here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_575T1000X5/item.html
@@crutchfield ok thanks for that. I apologize for being so indecisive. But after researching the recommended amplifier, I now have a fear of the amplifier running hot. (1) If I were to split up the load instead of having everything on one amp. How should I setup(wire) my system. (*I would love to have a switch for my Amp) (2) Which Amplifier would be best for Series/Parallel wiring on [2] 10" DVC subs 700 watt peak? (3) Which wiring kits do I need for my system setup? (4)With the setup will I need to upgrade my battery and or Alternator? Thanks a lot for your help!!!
We do not have switches to turn amps on and off. The ones we sell are designed to be turned on when the radio turns on. We can build a shopping cart with all the wiring to complete the install. Typically, there is one power wire ran to the better that connects to a distribution block so that each amp can get power from that one main wire. Are you still referring to the Kicker 43CVR102 subwoofers? And the same Kicker speakers from your initial message? This installation can only be done in Civic's with regular engine system (no Hybrids). We do not anticipate that an extra battery or a higher output alternator will be needed based on the speakers you initially listed.
I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser it has 2 little mini tweeters in the headliner, I put Pioneer TS-A709`s in the dash, Pioneer TS- A6970F`s in the doors, Pioneer TS-A879`s in the pillars in the back and a factory subwoofer in the back. The factory system sounded pretty good before I blew the dash tweeters so I replaced them with the Pioneers and can barely hear them so I figure an amplifier paired with the factory radio should get all the speakers sounding off. What amps would you recommend to power my setup? Thank`s in advance for your help. If you supply the links then to show my appreciation I will buy from Crutchfield.
You can add an amplifier to increase the sound quality of your Pioneer speakers. The 4-channel Pioneer GM-DX874 below provides excellent power and is 2-ohm stable so it can drive a total of 8 4-ohm speakers! www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc166/p_130GMDX874/Pioneer-GM-DX874.html
What amplifier would you recommend to power the pioneer ts z65ch component and the coaxial speakers. They have a rms of 110watts and peak power of 330 watts. Can I please get assistance with this. I also have a pioneer 2660nex head unit currently installed.
Hi Denzel, great choice on the speakers! The Pioneer GM-DX874 is a perfect amp match here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc921/p_130GMDX874/Pioneer-GM-DX874.html?tp=35782
I have a question I have 2 12 inch infinity kappa series subwoofers. They have an SSI switch on them to switch from two or four ohms. The RMS is 500 W. My question is will my alpine S-a60m push my subwoofers? The rating for the amp is 600 W at 2 ohms. I had this amp hooked up to two infinity reference series 12 inch subwoofers and it would vibrate 12 packs of sodas off my roof. The reference series RMS was 300. Am I now gonna need a bigger amplifier? And the last question is if I have the SSI switch on 2 ohms can they be wired to 1 ohm for 1 ohm amplifier?
While that Alpine can be used to power two of those subwoofers, it does not provide enough power to get the cleanest audio from the subwoofers or the hardest hitting bass that two of those subs can produce. The minimum watts RMS that we recommend to get he best clarity is 700. If you get an amp that outputs 1000 watts RMS for the two subwoofers, then you will be able to get that hard hitting bass with the clarity.
2012 toyota camry. Upgrading the head unit. 45 watt from that to speakers. I have a Kenwood 12" excelon sub ported. Want to replace the six factory speakers. Dash, front door and behind rear seat. What amp do I need? Will it power all speakers if I go 5 channel, or do two speakers power off head unit leaving other 4 and sub powered off of 5 channel amp? What if I wanted to add two speakers to the rear doors?
I'm getting head unit that states it has a "high power amp" 2-channel preamp outputs (2.5-volt rear/subwoofer). 4 6x8 3-way speakers that are "Peak: 700 watts per pair / 350 watts each | RMS: 70 watts per pair / 35 watts each" FR=28-22,000Hz, sensitivity 92db and impedance 4ohm. A 4 channel 400w class D full range 2ohm Amplifier. And later on, adding 2 8"subs in a box that I will most likely have to build to fit my regular cab Ford ranger. Not trying to dump a lot of money into this truck and I'm not trying to rock the block or deform my cab. My questions are... Does it sound like this gear will work alright together? Is this amp overkill for the 4 speakers and can I add the subs to this amp later or will I need a mono amp for them? Any advice on gear selection or wiring is appreciated. Especially if it's specific to regular cab trucks, it's tight in there.
This advice is different from everything I’ve heard so far in regards to matching speaker RMS with amp power. Formula here is not to exceed speaker RMS? But I’ve understood that you should have 50-100% more watts than your speakers RMS, running the amp at 60-70%? The system I’m putting together has four 120w RMS Alpine X-series speakers. So should I get the JL Audio RD-400 at 75 watts (fits the advice here) or the HD600 with 150 watts RMS? At 70%, the HD600 will be putting out 105 watts, plus my head unit’s 16, which is 121 watts which is about where my speakers are at. Any pros out there with guidance?
We have a policy of never suggesting amplifiers that overpower your speakers. We want to build you a system that performs and is reliable, and anytime you are overpowering your speakers maximum RMS wattage you are voiding your manufacturer's warranty, which we care about! With your system you will be sending a line-level RCA signal to the amplifier, and this will not add the amount of wattage from your head unit to the amount provided by the amplifier, you simply will not be relying on any power from your radio and using it solely as an audio source when connected to amplifiers.
I'm after sound quality but I'm pressed for room and right now have a kicker 4ch class ab amp with mids an highs on in front an its a crew cab with no rear speakers yet and I'm ready to add them and am thinking of moving from the kicker 4ch class A/B to the kicker key 4ch class d and sell the (2) kicker A/B amps and buy 3 of the kicker key amps (2) key200.4 4ch class D amps and a key500.1 mono class D amp. and so finely would ya notice any difference in sound quality from the kicker class A/B to the newer kicker class D amps ??? I know they say the class d has come a long way from what I read but there was no clear answer if the new kickers sound good enough to pass for a class A/B amp??. thanks
Thanks for these videos. I spent time with one of your customer service guys and he was very helpful. I have no issues with the speaker install...just concerned about the amp install. Any advice?
Great video. I have a little different sce ario where my speakers are 2 ohm 75Wrms and the Head Unit is 25W per channel at 4 ohm. Is this putting at risk my head unit? If that is the case can I use a 4 ohm 600 amp to cover the need for power?? Thank you so much for your time!
Most head units are not able to support 2 ohm speakers. If the head unit can support 2 ohms, the owner's manual will list it. If your head unit is one that cannot support 2 ohms, that is likely to put the head unit at risk. We need to check the amp's watts RMS per channel at 2 ohms. The amp should output no more than 75 watts RMS at 2 ohms. If it does not exceed the 75 watts RMS at 2 ohms, then it will work with the speakers
So in your opinion would 600 watts be ideal to power a complete setup with aftermarket radio. Two aftermarket tweeters, two door speakers, two rear deck and a 10” subwoofer?
Hi Red, sounds like you're building a great system! The best amp match will depend on the exact speaker/sub models and their specs. Do you have those handy?
That Bluetooth option that you said for classic cars? Could that same system be used in a new cars? Also with the Bluetooth would that not need a deck anymore and my phone would just be all I need?
Yes, this same Bluetooth amp setup can be used in newer vehicles. You will not hear any of the audible alerts anymore including those from services like OnStar, etc... but as long as you are ok with that, then a Bluetooth amp and speaker setup can be installed
What would be an ideal amplifier for a 2009 nissan altima (default radio system no bose) i am supposed to get this car in a few months and i wanted to redo the whole system. What would be the best $250 subwoofer? And a good seperate amplifier to power specifically that sub (i prefer a 12 inch dual sub system)
If I got 12 speakers, 4 X 6.5, 3 X 3.5 tweeters on the front dash, 4 tweeters 2 in front pillars and 2 in the rear dash, and an 8-inch Mojo sub. What channel amp will I need to run them using one amp.
For a one-amp solution, the Alpine HDP-D90 Status series 12-channel amp in the link below is a great choice. The Alpine also features 14-channels of DSP processing, so if you would like to run a separate more powerful amp to deliver more RMS wattage for your Mojo subwoofer you can! www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc166/p_500HDPD90/Alpine-HDP-D90.html

We will be happy to help and have a few questions so we can make sure you get an amp that will work. What is the brand/model of the older subwoofer? We need to know some of its specifications to endure a proper power match to the amp. Also, does your computer have the ability to output only bass audio through any of its ports? If it does, what type of port will that bass be output on?
asking for help: I have an suv that I just installed 4 jbl speakers on each door. There's also tweeters on the front doors. the jbl's say 165 peak and 55 rms. What's the ideal amp I should get for this system? as of right now I don't plan on adding a sub as I mostly listen to rock music but i know a 5 channel would leave the door open for that.
Great video. Well covered. My problem: the 4 Boston Acoustics speakers I just put on my jeep wk don't have any markings or info on them regarding their ohms and watts. Dang! Hard to figure out those numbers now to make them work properly.
@@crutchfield Thanks. It's a BostonAcoustics with following numbers on the back of the magnetic part of the speaker: 05059063AC , 2077-M, and 2996LP. They were made for Daimler-Chrysler. Unfortunately, BA is basically going out of business and they shut down their car audio units department. There are zero info on their car systems on their website. I've been advised to use a multimeter to figure out at least the ohms. Will probably try that.
Those numbers do not match the aftermarket model number format that Boston Acoustics used. If they are speakers that came factory installed in vehicle with a Boston Acoustics sound system, there is a good chance we will know the ohms of them. To check, we need the year, make, and model of the vehicle they were installed in.
Hi! I have Infinity Alpha 650c components only on front in my hyundai i10 now i want to add an amplifier to the system so which amplifier to buy as my speaker specifications say 45wRMS, 315w Peak. Please advise me on the same
Hello, I'm confused between JL JD400/4 or Alpine S2 A36F and both are class D 4 channel amps that i will be buying for my Blam relax component and Coax speakers
What has got you confused? I think both are solid 4-channel amps, with the JL Audio JD400/4 delivering a slight bit more wattage. What is the maximum RMS rating that your Blam Relax speakers can handle? Most that I saw on their site can handle around 75-watts rms, so the JL could be a solid call!
I'm new to subwoofer set ups and I have JL audio speakers in the doors and just got a factory subwoofer for my car. Its a chevy hhr and I don't know if I need a four channel amp with a mono amp for the sub or not?
For most vehicle setups, you can go with a 5-channel amp that provides 4 channels for the speakers and a 5th channel for the sub. You also have the option of using a separate 4-channel amp and a mono amp for the sub. That may change depending on the number of speakers you need to power, but this is typical for many setups. Sometimes the choice comes down to personal preference and price, and sometimes the wattage match is easier with one or the other. We can help narrow the options! What is the year on that HHR? What JL Audio speakers are you using, and do you have any information on that subwoofer?
If the subwoofer installed already has a “Class D Amplifier” built into it like the Kenwood KSC-PSW8, can I install a separate amplifier just to power the 4 speakers, without connecting it to the subwoofer at all?
I am looking to replace a factory head unit and amp with aftermarket. The factory amp powers tweeters on dash, speakers in each of 4 doors and subwoofer. Is there an amp designed that would allow connection to these speakers? Would prefer not to have to install crossovers as well.
Hi John, sounds like you're planning a nice upgrade! What is the year, make, and model of your vehicle? Is there a specific head unit you're planning to use? What are the specs on your new speakers?
@@crutchfield The car is 2012 C5 Citroen. I was looking to replace the failed factory head unit with an Android one (at 20% of cost!). I realise it is not optimal, but I would like to retain factory speakers since it would be difficult removing/replacing them.
I'm sorry, we have not researched that vehicle. In general though, it's best to maintain the factory amp for power for factory speakers since they are matched power/impedance wise.
If you can bridge that Kenwood amp to use 2 front speakers and a sub, how does that work if the sub needs to have significantly more wattage to keep up with the front speakers?
Hi there! We recommend pairing the amplifier wattage output to about 70-100% of the speaker/sub RMS power handling. Some amps, when bridged, can satisfy the speakers as well as the sub, but if you have a sub that needs more power, then a separate mono amp may be in order.
Hi Damon! The answer to that question would depend on the speakers you were planning to use. Using an amplifier to power component speakers is not always necessary, but it is the most ideal solution. An outboard amp will be able to power your speakers with greater efficiency, and improve your sound quality of your upgraded speakers. We will be happy to go over any speakers you may be interested in, and provide you with more detailed advice based on your particular application. www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc164/contact
Can I wire 2 mid range speakers and a sub to the same amp if I use a 4 channel amp (I’m going to bridge the sub) if so do I combine the max w of each new speaker?
You can use a 4-channel amp to drive two speakers and a subwoofer. In bridge mode using channels 3-4 to drive the subwoofer a 4-ohm subwoofer will be required. Always make sure that the RMS power delivery of your amplifier does not exceed the RMS ratings on your speakers.
2016 Honda CR-V stock deck 4 gauge wiring, stock door speakers and two old school dual voice competition kicker subs about 360 rms per sub what would be a good amp just for the subs as I just want more thump in the trunk
I am looking for a class D amplifier to support 1 pair or coaxial, 1 pair component with 1 pair tweeter and a 8 inch powered blaupunkt gtb200a sub. Kindly help me with a suitable amplifier. Thanks for the comment! You should be just fine running 700 watts RMS on that battery without any need for upgrades. What year is your truck? Do you have your eye on any particular amp/subs yet?? Also, to make everything work with the factory head unit you'll need one of these: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc384/p_161LC2IPRO/AudioControl-LC2i-PRO.html
So I have four Rockford fosgates 6x 8 p1683s. It says 130 watt per. Do I times that by 4 and then get that wattage for my amp? I’m confused. Cus that’s 520 watts for all four. Can someone please help me. How many watts do I need in my amp.
Great speakers! The true continuous RMS power rating for those Rockford Fosgate speakers is 65 watts RMS each. To power four of them, a 4-channel amp rated in the 50-65 watts RMS per channel range would be ideal. Here's a really nice sounding Rockford Fosgate amp that will pair quite nicely with your speakers: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc928/p_575R2300X4/Rockford-Fosgate-R2-300X4.html?tp=35782

Are you running the Rockford Fosgate T2500-1bdCP to power your JL 12W7AE-3 subs? If so, with the JL Audio subs you are able to reach an impedance of 1.5ohms, with each subwoofer being able to accept 1,000 watts RMS, since the Rockford Fosgate T2500-1bdCP amp is going to deliver 2500 watts at 1ohm, you would be delivering more power to each subwoofer than they can safely accept. We do not recommend over powering any subwoofer, as it can lead to voiding any warranty you may have on the woofers. You would need to work with an amp that delivers 2000 watts RMS at 1ohm, to safely drive those subs. Feel free to contact us, we will be happy to assist you in finding the best amp for your application. www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc164/contact
Question: I have an aftermarket head unit with 180 watts RMS (45 watts x 4 speakers 4Ω) and I am considering adding an amplifier to power the Alpine RS69.2 6x9" speakers in the rear of my classic car which have 100 watts RMS (300 watts peak power). For this setup, should I be looking at 2-channel amps with 100 watts RMS x 2?
Hi! I replaced the all stock Boston speakers in my 2011 Chrysler 200s Convertible for kicker CS series speakers, because the previous owner abused the stock system and it sounded like it was on its last leg. And now, they play quite a bit lower on volume, I assume because they are 4ohm vs 2ohm, and the door speakers play only bass, as in the tweeters and mid-range aren't active at all, because the stock system used the door speakers as subs pretty much. And my question is, how do I choose an amp for these speakers? Because most of the amps are for example x4 channels at 90watts, while in my car the dash speakers are 35w RMS, the door speakers are 150w RMS, and the rear seat speakers are 100w rms, and I have no idea what amp to choose with this setup. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
More power is a big plus for the Kicker CS line. To use an amp for everything, your best bet is to move to beefier dash speakers as well. Our advisors can help you choose both. Please reach out to them here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc921/support/ContactUs.aspx
I just got a system install in my car sub and I changed my 4 door speakers for front focal 6/12 200 watt and clarion 400 watt in the back. They put a amp for my sub but no amp for my door speakers and it’s really not loud. When I turn volume up it won’t go louder then half. So I guess I need a amp ?
So I just bought a system for my car which is 4 door speakers for Rockford fosgate R165X3 and 2 10” subwoofers R1S4X10 just want to know would I buy 2 separate amplifier to power the subwoofers and the door speakers or is there a amplifier out there that can power all 4 speakers and 2 sub without out killing the power to them and still get the best bass and sounds quality....
I have a 91' honda civic I replaced the door speakers with 'Kicker 100 watts, size 6.5 speakers, RMS(I gotta check the box again) I want to know if I can run a different brand amplifier on my 'Kicker' Speakers or does everything have to be same Brand if that matters??
There won't be any compatibility issues going with a different brand for the amp than the speaker brand. The important thing is just making sure that the amp is a good power match for the specific speakers.
I want to power some Ground Zero speakers on my Harley and there is no RMS. The power handling listed is 100-250watts. Should I pair an amp @100 watts or is 150/175/200 watt per channel sufficient?
We are not familiar with Ground Zero speakers to know them. Setting that aside and looking at the format of the information, it typically refers to RMS watts with a minimum of 100 per channel and no more than 250 per channel. Technically, any of the amps you describe can work with the speakers but its always recommended to avoid the bare minimum when possible so the speakers can become more lively.
I have a Can Am X3, want to install four 6.5" speakers (lets say 100w apiece) and an 8" subwoofer under the seat (not enough space to build a box big enough to accommodate a 10"). I really would prefer to use only ONE amplifier to accomplish this. What exactly do I need to look for in an amp? If a 6 channel, can four of the channels be @ 4 ohm and the bridged sub channel @ 2 ohms? Is that a thing? Also, in this set-up, should I get a single or dual voice coil sub? Once upon a time 30 years ago, we just hooked up whatever we had and it worked. I guess things get more complex when you're trying to do it correctly. LOL
Welcome back, Eric. :) The best amp match will depend on the speakers/sub you use and their specs. We'll be happy to recommend one. Do you have the 6.5" speakers and sub you mentioned above? If so, what is the RMS power rating for each? What is the impedance for each 6.5" speaker? How many voice coils does your sub have? What is the impedance per voice coil?
@@crutchfield Thanks for the reply! I'm looking at the Polk Audio DB652 6.5" coaxial, 100w RMS each, 4 ohm. I'd need to power four of these. The sub I'd like to use is a Skar VD8, 300w RMS and dual 2 ohm voice coils. Also, would prefer it to be a "marine" amp as all of this is going in a Can Am X3 which gets wet sometimes. Thanks for any help or advice!!
Thanks, Eric. The Kicker 48PXA10005 is a perfect match for your setup here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc921/p_20648PXA10/item.html Be sure to wire your sub in series for 4 ohms.
I have 4 JL Audio 10TW3-D8 subwoofers and I’m having a problem finding a amp that is sufficient to power them! Would you happen to have any recommendations on an amp and how to wire it so I can get the most out of my subwoofers? Thank you
You can wire those four dual 8-ohm voice coil subs in a parallel configuration to create a 1-ohm total load. Here's a 1-ohm stable mono amp from Rockford Fosgate that will work well with your JL subs: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc928/p_575R21200X/Rockford-Fosgate-R2-1200X1.html?tp=35834
Hello we are putting a new sound system in a79 series ute [Australia]and looking at alpine x-170s component speakers [2 only single cab] advice on a single subwoofer and amp please?
We don't know what models will be available in Australia as we sell gear in the United States market. Typically, we recommend our customers giving their speakers and subwoofers a minimum of 70% of the top RMS watts they can handle for the cleanest sound. The closer you get to 100% of the top RMS watts, the harder and more intensely they can play. Also, a good blending of the bass can happen when the subwoofers handle 5-10 times the power of the speakers. According to Alpine's Australia website, those speakers handle up to 45 watts RMS so you could match them with a subwoofer than handles 250-450 watts RMS.
I have a 4ohm 300watt rms sub , i am confused if i should go with a class-d mono amp that has 500w capacity at 4 ohm, a class-ab amp with 200watt rms at 4ohm or any general 4 or 2 channel amp in the bridge mode.
If your sub handles 300 watts rms at 4 ohms you don't want to exceed the 300 watts rms whether it's a class D or class AB. Class AB design offers power efficiency and good sound. Class D design has the highest efficiency but isn't quite as high-fidelity.
Have honda odyssey 2012. Want an Amplifier and subwoofer to the OEM speakers just to improve quality what would you recommend. By the way low budget. Thank you
I am looking to put a whole new system in my truck, 6 speakers and 1 sub, I was wondering what a good amp for me would be because the speakers are different max powers and I don’t even know where to start with the sub. Thanks!
What are the RMS continuous power ratings for each of your speakers? Will the amp be connected to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit? Or, for quicker, detailed assistance in putting together a full setup, feel free to reach out to our knowledgeable Advisors: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc928/support/ContactUs.aspx
Your video was really informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. If you can help me out with some advice that would be great. I have got rockford fosgate P16 6" infront doors. P16 2 way in the rear doors all connected to a factory stereo with a 5 channel amp in Mitsubishi Outlander. Amp R2750X5 that is 750 watt rms. and the sub is a sealed enclosure of 200 rms rockford 12". Am not at all satisfied with the quality of the system and don't want to get it done from the same place again. I am lacking bass and the clerity of sound. Also I do not have much room for sub becuase its behind the third row. But I want Some serious bass to shake the car with clarity in speakers. WHat should I be upgrading? and what specs should I look for while upgrading?
If you can change to a ported subwoofer box setup, that will help. Also, find one that presents a 2 ohm load to that amp to get all the power it can give for a subwoofer. The clarity of the other speakers may be able to be increased depending on what was used to help get the audio from the stock system to the new amp. I recommend contacting an advisor to discuss these specifics and ideal changes to get a personal recommendation on gear to help with your goals. So if I'm gonna run (2)110 watt rms bullet tweeters, and (4) 6½ midrange 110 watt rms door speakers, do I need a 6 channel amp or can I use a 4 channel and wire two speakers in parallel to one channel( X 2) for a 2ohm load and 2 channels to a 4 ohm load? I'm just not sure if you can run (2) channels @ 2 ohms and (2) channels @ 4 ohms?I am looking at the Pioneer Ts-M650pro and Ts-B350pro
That could definitely work. Other options might be available too. Is this being installed into a vehicle? If it is, what is the year, make, and model of it? Is this being connected to an aftermarket radio? It is being used with an external audio processor?
I recently installed 4 pioneer 4 way coaxial speakers in my 2011 P7B crown Victoria - the speakers are 80 watts RMS and 4 ohm. What should I get for an amplifier and stereo combo should I get for the best performance??
Hey pretty new to the whole concept but just wondering how I would go about a build with a GT Bass Pro 12 and a Memphis 12” build they both have separate boxes and only one woofer in each I only have the amp for the Memphis is it possible to add my JBL to my system or will I have to add an additional jbl system into the mix? Finally any tips for replacing car electrical components and parts to safely do all this?
So, depending on the model of that memphis and its specs, you MATY be able to use a single amp to power both subs, but it is more likely you will need a second amp. I am replacing the stock subwoofer and speaker in my 2004 Maxima with two 8" JBL Stage subwoofer 200 watts RMS each and four JBL Stage 3627 - 6.5” Two-way speakers 45 watts RMS each. Do I need two AMPs or One? And which one do you recommend?

I have good offer(maybe my only one) for 600rms at 4ohm and 1000rms at 2ohm amplifier with sub that has 275rms peak1100 with switch for 2ohm and 4ohn. Will it work? Is it good match? I like the amp for the control and head room it gives.
Your cousin walks into your room, he’s done with his first car amp. He throws it on your desk and says, there you go loser. It’s all scratched up, you don’t even have a car, you are 14. You have selected your first amplifier.
Literally me trying to fit my cousins pioneer deq 7600 into the car and then realizing that I needed an amp to get more than minimum speaker volume😅
This information is extremely helpful. I've always appreciated Crutchfield and how much effort you guys put into making sure the customer makes an informed decision.
U work for Crutchfield don't cha lol? 🤣😆
I’ve read your magazines since the 80s. They were so informative then, this video is no different. Good job
I’ve been a car/boat audio enthusiast/amateur installer since the early 2000s, Crutchfeild has always been an invaluable resource for me
Thank you! We sure do appreciate you!
So helpful, thank you! I’ve just purchased 4 speakers,an amp and a sub from you guys. I really appreciate that you offer so much educational material and guidance. You’re a lot more than a store and it’s been a huge help. I’ve never done anything like this so the info is definitely needed
Respected sir, you explained every little detail about car audio in less than 7 minutes. Thank you soooooooo much. This video was really helpful
Great video. Very informative. I was thinking of just adding a single 12" or 2 -10" sub box. Nothing huge. So many options nowadays. When I was teenager we used home speakers in our trunks and Pawn Shop amplifiers. 😂
Man! The 12” is huge already for a car. I guess it’s gonna be sounding great!
I did eenie meenie miney mo and it sounds good to me!

Haha bout to do that too
This is great, I love these tutorials. I'll keep watching them as long as yall keep making them! Let's see one on everything you sell! Crutchfield is the best
Thanks! 🙂
Really impressive video, this guy's speaking voice is great and there was clearly a script and production involved. I learned a lot that I might have tuned out for if the presenter and the information wasn't so clear and concise.
This Was Very Well Done!!
CrutchField makes great stuff!
This presentation is so precise! I’ve learned so much fm it ‼️
Thanks dude !

Crutchfield is my favorite audio source!
Awwww thanks! We try to do out best!
Man, fot a DIY person, you've just made me rethink a lot 😮
Sounds like the video is helping you? Is there anything else we can do to help you with choosing the right amp?
go for the bigest you can afford! it is always good the have extra power in case you should decide to go for some thing big !
carstereo is a fun thing.. once you get into it, you just want more. when you feel that hard bass, you just feels so many emotions at the same time :D
I learned so much in 10 mins, thx
Perfectly explained, thank you
I love the way this was but together very Educational
Thanks for this information this is the most informative video on this subject ,just excellent
Amazing explanation! Much appreciated for it!

Awesome info. Thanks, Crutchfield!
You're welcome!
Clearly detailed buddy. Really appreciate it 👍😇👌
I have (jbl stadium gto 930) with 110w RMS And 330 peak per pair, and they support 96 db sensitivity with 2 ohm. Please suggest me a best amp plz................. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Are you only planning to power a total of 4 JBL Stadium GTO 930's? And will you be hooking up this amp to an aftermarket or factory radio?
This was very helpful. Thanking you.
Very helpful and well presented. Thanks
Thanks! It's great to hear that you found it helpful! 🙂
Just bought a 1979 Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon,
I want to put in some alpine brand audio equipment in it such as radio/video for back up camera, maybe some subs as well , where should I start ?
I get others saying the current amp wont be enough, and yet others saying the current one will be to much
in the video it talks about speakers having "Max RMS" and I get the 75-100% thing. but with the RMS having one rating and then my "peak" being a very different number... which rating do I use? and what wiring method would be best.
Based on those specifications, we only offer one amp that can power two:
www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_57525001CP/item.html
The single sub setup can be powered with an amp that gives it 70% of the top RMS power. That's the minimum we recommend for good performance. This means 1075 watts RMS is the minimum making this amp able to sufficiently power one sub:
www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_301HCP1DK/item.html
Trying to find a amp to power 4 kicker cs 6.5 door speakers any recommendations have a aftermarket dasaita android head unit with rca connection in back
Typically, that series speaker can handle 75-100 watts RMS with their current model, the 46CSC654 handling up to 100 watts RMS and working well with this amp:

Thanks! Great idea. HNY!
I got a Kenwood Apple ready stereo that plays dvd 📀. I have ford factory speakers (4). I would like all speakers and a subwoofer installed. Do I need the 5 channel, because of the 4 speakers and sun? Is asylum “the big one” good ?
Sounds like you're working on a nice upgrade! A 5-channel amp would be ideal. Do you have specific speakers and a sub in mind?
What is the best amplifier to get to power my TRF LWT693 (80w rms) speakers and KENWOOD KSC-W1200B(300w rms) subwoofer from the Pioneer MVH-S420BT radio?? I’m lost
We'll be glad to recommend an amp for power. How many of the speakers do you have? How many subs?
You're welcome, Martin. Happy listening!
My planned setup consist of:
HU: Alpine ILX-W60
Frt Spkrs & Rr Speakers: Kicker 46CSC674
100 Watts RMS(300peakpower)
Subwoofer: [2] 10" Kicker CompVR 43CVR102
•Dual 2ohm voice coils
•100-300Watts 175per coil
"WHICH AMPLIFIER DO YOU RECOMMEND & HOW SHOULD I CHANNEL IT?"
Thanks!
It's the Rockford Fosgate Power T1000X5ad amp found here:
www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_575T1000X5/item.html
@@crutchfield ok thanks for that. I apologize for being so indecisive. But after researching the recommended amplifier, I now have a fear of the amplifier running hot.
(1) If I were to split up the load instead of having everything on one amp. How should I setup(wire) my system. (*I would love to have a switch for my Amp)
(2) Which Amplifier would be best for Series/Parallel wiring on
[2] 10" DVC subs 700 watt peak?
Am I able to use a 4 channel amp on for two speakers, just using two channels and leave the other two channels free for now? Thanks
yea you’ll be fine
Indeed you can!

Did your car come with a factory JBL system, factory nav or an LCD radio? What model radio are you planning to install?
I'm getting head unit that states it has a "high power amp" 2-channel preamp outputs (2.5-volt rear/subwoofer).
4 6x8 3-way speakers that are "Peak: 700 watts per pair / 350 watts each | RMS: 70 watts per pair / 35 watts each"
FR=28-22,000Hz, sensitivity 92db and impedance 4ohm.
More information is needed on the gear to check its compatibility. Which brand/model amp are you referring to?
With your system you will be sending a line-level RCA signal to the amplifier, and this will not add the amount of wattage from your head unit to the amount provided by the amplifier, you simply will not be relying on any power from your radio and using it solely as an audio source when connected to amplifiers.
the info is great. Tnx. I learnt alot!
it's really tmi... need to be more concise
I know they say the class d has come a long way from what I read but there was no clear answer if the new kickers sound good enough to pass for a class A/B amp??. thanks
Just so they are a good match for your speaker specs, the Kicker Key amps offer excellent power and performance, especially for the compact size.
Thanks for these videos. I spent time with one of your customer service guys and he was very helpful. I have no issues with the speaker install...just concerned about the amp install. Any advice?
You're welcome, Gary. Do you need help choosing an amp or help with your installation?
Are you also going to upgrade the factory speakers? If so, do you want the new amp to also power the speakers or just the subwoofers?
If I got 12 speakers, 4 X 6.5, 3 X 3.5 tweeters on the front dash, 4 tweeters 2 in front pillars and 2 in the rear dash, and an 8-inch Mojo sub. What channel amp will I need to run them using one amp.
For a one-amp solution, the Alpine HDP-D90 Status series 12-channel amp in the link below is a great choice. The Alpine also features 14-channels of DSP processing, so if you would like to run a separate more powerful amp to deliver more RMS wattage for your Mojo subwoofer you can!

Hai sir
I purchased 2 pair of sony XS-162ES components which is the best 4 chanel amplifier to these speakers
And also i have a one question these sony XS-162ES company mentioned on Box
( 90 w RMS power)
(60 w Rated power)
( 270w peak power)
is it watts for each speaker or 1 pair if two speakers😊
Hi Santhosh, great speaker choice! Each speaker handles 90 watts RMS. Do you have any brand or budget in mind for the amp? Will you be using an aftermarket radio with pre-outs?
I have a Nissan Altima 2016 just bought infinity kappa 6.5 for the front and back passager and two 6x9 rear did not change front dash I have 9 total in car also just bought JL audio 4 channel amp XD 400 just wanted to know if I should buy another amp to power the other 4 speckers what should I do ?
Nice choices on the Kappas and JL amp! Just so your factory amp is intact and working, you'll want to leave factory speakers powered by it.
Hey I really hope you see this ice currently got 2 150w 4omb audio pipe ts-cvr6 woofer speakers and an old 360w sub woofer speaker that I had from an old stereo. Now what I want to do is combine them and hook them up to my pc but I'm not sure what to look for in my amplifier
Nice choice on the speakers! The JBL Stage A6004 will power them well here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc921/p_109STA604M/JBL-Stage-A6004.html?tp=35782
Great video. Well covered. My problem: the 4 Boston Acoustics speakers I just put on my jeep wk don't have any markings or info on them regarding their ohms and watts. Dang! Hard to figure out those numbers now to make them work properly.
What model are the speakers? You can find the specs with that info.
@@crutchfield It was an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I believe.
Did it also came with factory installed navigation?
Hi! I have Infinity Alpha 650c components only on front in my hyundai i10 now i want to add an amplifier to the system so which amplifier to buy as my speaker specifications say 45wRMS, 315w Peak. Please advise me on the same
Hi Jayraj, the Rockford Fosgate Prime R2-200X2 is an ideal match for your speakers here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc921/p_575R2200X2/item.html
Yes you can amplify the speakers separately from a powered subwoofer!
Would I need to get a higher channel amplifier if I’m using component speakers rather than ‘all in one’ type speakers?

We will be happy to help! What is the ohms of each subwoofer voice coil?
I am looking for a class D amplifier to support 1 pair or coaxial, 1 pair component with 1 pair tweeter and a 8 inch powered blaupunkt gtb200a sub. Kindly help me with a suitable amplifier. Also as the sub is amplified already, does it still need to be routed via sub ?. Not sure if u can, however; i would appreciate if the amplifier is available for purchase in India.
I want to add 2 10” subs that are rated at 350W RMS each. 700 rms total. Didn’t want to have to upgrade to a bigger alternator or battery if need be. What would you recommend I get? Also, it is going in a Toyota Tundra Crewmax so space is somewhat limited. I haven’t changed the stock head unit.
I have inputted 4 components JBL GTO 609 in front and back seat and Under-seat I got Alpine Subwoofer ! Planning to go for 4channel amplifier .. could you please help which one should be good to go.. can you suggest me the best with model name .
JBL
Infinity
Alpine
Pioneer
Just to clarify, you only need the amp to power the JBL GTO 609 component speakers? It does not need to power the Alpine sub, right?
Crutchfield I have a serious question when it comes to sub is it safe to put a 2500 watt Fosgate cpbd amp on 2 JL Audio W7 12-inch Subs???

100x2 RMS at 4-ohms will be ideal.
An amp would definitely help make those speakers shine!
You could accomplish that with just a 5 channel amplifier. Will you be hooking the amp up to a factory or aftermarket radio?
I love this guy!

I have good offer(maybe my only one) for 600rms at 4ohm and 1000rms at 2ohm amplifier with sub that has 275rms peak1100 with switch for 2ohm and 4ohn. Will it work? Is it good match? I like the amp for the control and head room it gives.
We recommend pairing an amplifier that has an RMS output of 70-100% of the RMS handling of the subwoofer. I hope this helps! :-)
