Mercury 250 Pro XS Skeg repair (Why I don't like Skeg Guards)

Someone put a skeg guard on this motor and then went out and knocked it off. First thing you have to do to install this guard is to drill holes at the base of the lower unit, so that when it breaks again you don't have much to weld to.

I am trying to TIG weld one of these and no matter how clean I get it, a puddle just wont form. It's like the Mercury casting is just too dirty. I can TIG weld the 1/4 thick repair piece by itself just fine.. So frustrating

Would welding or soldering on the skeg guard avoid the problem of losing strength or is it a question of steel being a much harder material than aluminium making it less effective at absorbing hits and making it snap off instead of denting?

I have a spool gun would you have any objections to me welding one up with that? This particular damage is done on the front side of the skeg.

The hull of aluminum boats are spoolgunned so it’ll be fine some people use e4043 rods to weld em back on

Why does Mercury not recommend welding skegs on the torquemaster?
