As I was listening to this podcast today I was listening to the part when Jerry was there when Bobby Isaac died of a heart attack and how it changed his life. And I was thinking about Kurt Busch cursing Dr.Punch out one time at Homestead when his car broke and he was in a bad mood and how disrespectful that was. Dr.Jerry Punch has saved drivers lives and watched drivers die and has given us so much great racing coverage over the years and to be treated that way by Kurt Busch ticks me off to this day. Thank you Dr.Punch for so many great years of reporting and for your service to mankind as a doctor. We need more guys like this. And I'm sure we can all agree that the Dale Jr. Download is the best show on racing matters! Thanks Dale Jr. and crew for a great job!
I just miss DALE.. it just isn't the same with out him. Don't think it will ever be the same really.. you can't replace your Hero.. really. I watch a lot of Jrs. Stuff he has going on. And glad how he always talks about his dad. And wants to know more about the past. A HERO LIKE DALE LIVES FOREVER.. I THINK
My little brother and I have our picture with him, infield at Bristol, Dale sr has an arm around each of us, I may have been 12, brother 10, Jr was a year or two younger than me. Good guy, missed
Dr. Jerry is a Nascar treasure. I'm sure he has intimate knowledge of not only Dale Sr.'s struggles with injuries, but other drivers as well. Thanks Dr. Jerry for sharing a little bit about Dale. I can't (and I don't think anyone else can either) put my finger on why the racing just has not been the same since his death. There has been glimmers of good racing here and there, but it's just not the same. They can keep changing the cars, the drivers, the tracks, but it just isn't the same. I'm still a fan and always will be. Still watch every week, hoping for some on track energy like it used to be. Thanks Dale and Dr. Jerry for bringing this to us.
I've concluded that it is the personalities (or lack thereof) more than any other single factor that makes current day NASCAR less interesting. While I don't like the playoffs/point system, stage racing, the visual aspect of the modern cars and a whole bunch of other things, there just aren't any interesting or unique drivers anymore. It seems like they are all the same. What became of the good old boys, the guys who grew up on farms or worked blue collar jobs? All the drivers are too polished these days, too manufactured. They almost seem robotic, as if they are nothing more than a spokesperson for their sponsors. I want to see more guys that are a bit rough around the edges, guys that aren't so polished, guys who don't have such a squeaky clean image. Guys like Dale Earnhardt Sr., Sterling Marlin or Bill Elliott were interesting and compelling because they were REAL and unique. What you saw with them was what you got. They didn't come across as trained public speakers with marketing degrees. They were just race car drivers, and damn good ones I might add! I could sit and listen to guys like Earnhardt, Marlin or even Mark Martin tell stories all day long. But the current generation of drivers can't hold my attention for 5 minutes. They just seem bland, boring, and uninteresting in comparison, and far too much alike. Where is the variety? I don't mind having some west coast or big city boys around. But we could use some tobacco chewing southern boys that talk with a drawl too. But we don't see drivers like that anymore because they aren't "marketable".
I could sit here and listen to Dr. Jerry Punch's stories all day long. What this man has seen and has personally done for the sport is no less than amazing. What a class act all the way.
I listened to the whole interview & that was one of the best interviews I've ever heard. Having been in the medical field for about 30 years now, although never anywhere near the level Dr Punch achieved, I totally understand flipping the switch from what you're doing to being hyper focused on the patient in front of you. I had one situation in all those years where I took one look at the person & KNEW they were going to pass out in the next 1-2 seconds. I totally dropped what I had been doing, caught the person to keep them from slamming their head into the desk & the training kicked in. Afterwards, I just picked up what I had been working on & everyone looked at me like I had a third head. What seemed 2nd nature to me seemed to amaze those around me. When Dr Punch described the situation with Rusty, I felt like I could understand a little bit what must have been going through his mind. What an amazing man and Jr is right - Dr Punch has had a HUGE impact on Nascar.
I watched the NBC show and was VERY impressed with this interview. I always knew that Dr. Punch was a legend, but I really had NO IDEA how much he has actually done for the sport!!
I know Dr. Punch and Dale Sr. were very close friends. My heart aches for him. I wish he would write a book of the stories he has. Not only about him and Dale. But all the ones I’m sure he has from his days in the sport.

I remember seeing him in Atlanta, I was standing in Carl Edwards trailer with friends and he walked up and talked to me as if he'd known me his whole life. Just as plain in person as you see on TV. It literally took death to keep Dale from racing. All the herrendous wrecks he survived and broken bones and other injurys and nothing scared him or made him slow down in speed. Him getting emotional at Indy was because he wanted to compete so bad to win that race again but couldn't.
I was never a fan of Dale Sr., but I respected him in his ability to wheel a racecar and how he was off the track. That said, I'll also say that Dale Earnhardt Sr. carried his balls in a wheelbarrow, they were so big. You summed it up perfectly. It took death to get him out of a racecar.

You bring so many wonderful individuals to the spot light and do such a great job of interviewing them. Dr Jerry Punch one of the warm voices of NASCAR. Really miss him on NASCAR Broadcast. I Met him at California speedway in the late 90s as he was coming out of the media boot just one of the nicest guys you could meet.
Jerry's ability to bring in the medical aspect to the commentary crew was the single most unique thing NASCAR ever had broadcast wise. His knowledge wasn't just about the cars. He could explain and rationalize injuries to drivers in a way that helped a LOT of people process some very horrible moments. His ability to translate the medical aspect to the race fan was a hidden gem because that was an era where the danger was VERY real still (yes it still is, but even more so pre 2001) and as a kid I had a huge level of trust in the fact that Jerry did such an amazing job of Explaining the normal racing stuff (pit stops, the Quaker State Track Facts segment etc) but also in the fact that he literally saved Rusty Wallace's life and aided MANY an injured crew member. He was one of the biggest assets NASCAR ever had who had nothing to do with the actual competition.
Doc is just pure class. He does a weekly spot on a local talk radio show and he's awesome taking calls, talking to fans of racing and football. Just a class guy.

That broken collar bone story was really cool to hear again. I was on Andrettis team in '96 and saw the talladega crash from our pit box. Side note: I also remember the ricky craven crash that year at talledega. It was insane being at Watkins Glen when Sr. broke that track record. I knew he was hurt but I didn't remember the extent of it until now.
Saved Rusty Wallace’s life too. Oh yea... Dale had a part in it too... up on the hood pulling the windshield off and holding Rusty’s head up. He had choked on something during a wreck in qualifying
Yep. That's the one where he had to lie about the driver being stable in order to get the medivac to come thru. I think it was included in part of this interview with Dale Jr.
My first introduction to Jerry Punch was a super nintendo racing game where he announced himself introducing you to the game and damn its always a great thing. Always enjoyed Dr Punch. I think there is a timelessness with him, these stories, if that was the modern day and age they would hear about it! I feel he had an absolute respect with the drivers because he would give them great advice and help them but not control them
There should be a statue of Doc outside of every infield care center in Nascar! You are right about Bodine winning & changing road-course strategy, but "Rival" 😂 More like Dale's personal whipping boy! Wasn't a Bodine fan, nor a Dale Sr fan, but even I felt sorry for Geoff when it came to his dust-ups with Ol' Iron-head 😆
This is the interview I've been waiting on. I haven't listened to the pod cast yet, did he tell the story about when Dr. Punch's wife was pregnant and Dr. Jerry had to work the Bristol race Dale put his helicopter on standby for Doc and his wife?
It was The August Michigan Race in 94 Junior mentions where his Dad broke a bone in his neck and it makes me wonder if that was the same bone he broke in 99 at Atlanta and drove the entire season with it till the off season when he got his surgery before the 2000 season

Yep. That's the one where he had to lie about the driver being stable in order to get the medivac to come thru. I think it was included in part of this interview with Dale Jr.

My first introduction to Jerry Punch was a super nintendo racing game where he announced himself introducing you to the game and damn its always a great thing. Always enjoyed Dr Punch.
I think there is a timelessness with him, these stories, if that was the modern day and age they would hear about it!
I feel he had an absolute respect with the drivers because he would give them great advice and help them but not control them

Hahaha! Same here. White shirt with Dale's autograph right under the hurt so good part. I cut the sleeves off about 15 years ago. But after he died, I knew I would keep it forever.

It was The August Michigan Race in 94 Junior mentions where his Dad broke a bone in his neck and it makes me wonder if that was the same bone he broke in 99 at Atlanta and drove the entire season with it till the off season when he got his surgery before the 2000 season
