Dr. Berg, I've been *IF and prolonged fasting* (monthly) for 2 years. I healed an asthmatic histamine intolerance by doing this and eating a low carb diet with only whole, mostly organic food including our organic home-grown fermented veggies and grass-fed beef. *Just got my A1C and was shocked and dismayed to find it 6.0!* What gives?! I'm diligent with my fasting and diet. 52, female, 5'2", 110 lbs, muscular and active. Thank you!!!
The average age gets younger each year. The number of young stroke victims is also climbing. My wife had her 2nd stroke in October of last year, the 1st stroke was approx. 10 years ago. With her 1st stroke, you couldn't even tell that it had happened. The 2nd one however, has left her almost absolutely disabled. It's been a steady battle of rehabilitation since. Thank God that she is still with me. Two months of neuro-icu, 2 more months in the hospital. I'd do anything to get stem cell treatment for her. In the meantime I'll happily take care of her 24/7 forever. We're both early 40s. Im trying to figure out if a keto meal plan would help her also. 👍🏻
The definition of Diabetes being an A1C > 6.5 is the clinical point at which medication begins. The goal of treatment is to lower A1C below 6.5. The 6.5 value is a result of understanding the harm medications cause. A normal heathy person has an A1C around 4.5 and a blood glucose between 60-80. All this correlates with high insulin, not sugar, being the killer. It is just easier to measure blood sugar than insulin. We also do not have meds to lower insulin safely in patients not hospitalized. Avoid sugar in any form
Lowering insulin can happen easily, if not quickly, at home. It does take a lengthy period, sometimes up to a year! Eat correctly and IF as you can. You will get better at IFing as the IR heals.
Last week I had my A1c tested and it is NOT a fasting test. I went from 5.7 to 5.9 in a year, I was declared Prediabetic and am scheduled to see a diabetes nutritionalist in 3 days. :/
Hi. Dr. new sub here. i do like the health info you are doing. i have a request. do you have any video or make is it possible to make a video about deeper info about gout? and the know how of what to do about it? thanks a lot Dr.
Dr Berg I hope what you’re saying is correct. I just had my a1c levels rechecked after being on 3 months of strict keto and IF and I was so disappointed that my results were 5.7. They were 5.6 right before I started keto and IF so I was shocked and didn’t know what to make of it :(
Good for u it's 5.7...me it's 6.30..! tho am not on strict keto but I do IF about 4- 5 times a week for about 3months now...this video has eased me somehow of my worries, if i was able to understand what dr. Eric Berg is saying here...i'll try again HB1AC after a year of IF and keto...and ldl coz result now is 7.19mmol/L...😞
@@baybaymarino5498 Hi... happy to report that I had my A1C levels rechecked at 4 months (1 month after my 5.7 disappointment) and it had gone down to 5.5. I’m planning on getting them checked again in January 2021 (6 months after having started keto and IF) to see if there’s more improvement. I have however been dealing with telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss) for almost three months (which makes me very sad and I’m certain it was caused by my drastic change in diet) but I’m hopeful that it will stop soon... the things we endure in an effort to stay healthy in the long run :/
@@crism4306 there is this video of Dr. Eric Berg on hairloss when in keto...u might want to see it...and hoping u'll get good results on ur lab tests...
I've been there. I became extremely attentive on eliminating ALL sugars from my diet. I eliminated all wheat, corn, processed dressings and condiments; all fried foods. I didn't eat out and I maintained this regimen through the holidays. I normally do an 18 to 20 hour daily IF. It worked. My a1c dropped from 5.7 to 4.1. I also lost weight during this process.
Thank you for being an amazing advocate for health. You have done a great service to humanity in sharing your deep knowledge with the world for free. You deserve every penny you make from your business because you do it with true generosity. I am you biggest fan! Michael
Dr..you do a great job, since looking at you, brought my a1c from 6.2 to 5.3 I am debating getting off Crestor 5 mm, one Dr. says yes cardiologist says no, but cholesterol profile is normal. Hope you will one day come to Chicago and do a health clinic.God Bless, keep up the good work.
Video Suggestion: a video that discusses all the lab work necessary for one to monitor their health. I don't go to doctors. I was fully covered, and with Obama care, the flood of new patients, my doctor bounced me. I intend to educate myself. I want to find medical students who quit, and buy their books. A comprehensive understanding of lab work would be immensely helpful.
compilation from many specialist doctors... *heal your gut* (your microbiome is the bacteria ecosystem in your colon that makes you fat/sick, or healthy if you feed a wide range of them through different fiber sources. Studies done with fecal transplants from fat mice made the skinny mice fat & sick). Sweets & beverages destroy the microbiome. *Mind your mitochondria* ... some things damage your cells' powerhouse over time such as: sweets & PUFA veg seed oils, (refined/man-made foods), sleep deprivation, stress. *Relatively low insulin lifestyle* : Control carbs, prioritize protein, fill in with good fats. Chronically high insulin throws many other hormones out of whack, causes dementia, prevents weight loss, + shuts down organs! I focus on: 1a)
I've been on keto for 3 year now and my A1C is 5.2. My blood sugar levels sipke after just drinking a homemade leafy green, celery, cucumber,1/8 strawberries and MCT oil smoothie. It has gone up as hight as 138. Keto and intermittent fasting arn't controlling my Chronic migraines either. However my terrible GERD and arthritis is better so I am sticking with it. The other funny thing is when I started Keto it was very dirty Keto and I actually had more energy and migraine relief then now while I'm on healthy keto. Go figure.
Yeah, smoothies and juices are just awful for you. Nature doesn't give you those, machines do! Also just a heads up, A1C missed 73% of diagnosing true diabetics. Horrible standard, wouldn't you agree? If your loved ones eat junk and are overweight, have them get a Postprandial insulin assay test. AKA Kraft insulin test. Gotta measure insulin after drinking sugar water at a lab.

It is difficult to understand the blood count levels as they do not correlate with the type registered on my test results. For example my HbA1c is 39-47 mmol/mol - > 47, with a note”At risk of Diabetes”. I would be so grateful if Dr Eric Berg could present a video on how to interpret blood test results and the different measurements used for any one type of blood test. Thank you. I love your explanations.

you have less red blood cells therefor the test which is all about glucose sticking to red blood cells might show a smaller number but thats not from less sugar but from less red cells.
Thank you this help me a lot .I left you a long message on the last video I watched. My a1c is 4.7 Fasting glucose is high between 117 and 130. I have seen A1C be over 10 to now being since on the insulin pump 5.2 - 6.5 but also being told I'm becoming anemic, have a vitamin deficiency in B1, B12, hypothyroidism, lymphedema in both lower legs when it started in the left leg & have gone from 1 or 2 doctors to like 6 different doctors/specialist who I wish would just share notes or at least be able to consolidate to just 1 doctor.

Waiting for morning fasting blood sugars to decline is frustrating; however, I will say the numbers continue to slowly decrease after being on keto for about six months. I am enjoying OMAD, IF, and once every other month a 3-5 day water fast to give my liver a good wringing out. Dr. Berg, thank you for explaining the "behind the scenes" physiological mechanisms so very well. Very interesting 2nd part of the video. I am on Keto (20g carbs/day) and Fasting 22:2 and I often wake up with glucose level above 12 mmol/l, which is way too high. However, my ketones are always above 1 and I could not make sense of how the two opposing "forces" could co-exist. Whenever I use insulin (fast or slow acting), I feel terrible (dizzy and weak and extremely hungry) and I crash. Therefore, I do not have a lot of option to lower my glucose level when on Fasting/keto, other than letting it slowly go down through the day. But from the video, I take it that its a temporary situation and that as my IR is reduced, I should see my glucose level go down.
Doc, could you do a video on plus and minus of blood donation with the keto diet and should you or should you not donate blood while fasting. Thank you.
blood donation help reduce accumulation of too much iron in the body! good to do once every 3 to 6 months on a day you not fasting..i get tired after a session so better not to fast on that day
Wow this makes perfect sense my morning sugar is always high like 99 waking up then I walk around for 10 or 20 mins then it's 230 no breakfast or nothing
I have 2 doubts.. 1) if doctors know that sugar will spike in the early morning, then why measure it as "fasting" test? 2) during post meal, should I consume my regular metformin tablet?
Thank you for your explanation I test before bed last night I was at 105 this morning I'm at 193. Im just gonna keep doing what im doing and not worry about why it fluctuates so much and keep doing my keto
Soulless One: Mine was that way too. I started Intermittent Fasting along with clean Keto. I slowly worked myself up to One Meal A Day (23:1). Only now am I starting to see my dawn phenomenon begin to lower.

wow im sorry for the problems.. we need to run away from carbs and sugar! Keto and IF... Fasting is a powerful tool!
I would totally change her diet
Yes it should help!
Carbs are the #1 cause of strokes, do your research and hopefully you can help your wife 🙏
@Ebony Travel that is not an a1c test.
Post prandial
HOMA-IR
FBG
All are more conclusive.
Diabetes is dx at 3 readings of at least 126, true. It shouldn’t be that high, dx should come at 100. Thus, the A1C range should be lower too.
One of the only videos explaining high morning glucose related to trying to fix it .
Love this ❤thank you
Dr Berg I hope what you’re saying is correct.
@@joelhunton8600 how long did it take to go that low, would like suggestion, experience.
For the last 2 years always between 3.8 and 4.1 just got the results today
Amazing!! What do u eat???
What's your diet
Thank you for being an amazing advocate for health. You have done a great service to humanity in sharing your deep knowledge with the world for free. You deserve every penny you make from your business because you do it with true generosity. I am you biggest fan! Michael
Thank you sooo much
You're welcome!
Cholesterol is not a predictor of heart disease. High insulin levels, high triglycerides, and high coronary calcium levels, are, though.
Thank you for telling us this problem will take time to correct
Video Suggestion: a video that discusses all the lab work necessary for one to monitor their health. I don't go to doctors. I was fully covered, and with Obama care, the flood of new patients, my doctor bounced me. I intend to educate myself. I want to find medical students who quit, and buy their books. A comprehensive understanding of lab work would be immensely helpful.
Love this channel. I am prediabetic and on very low carb diet. I do notice sometimes my morning fasting glucose can be 101 to 114 .
compilation from many specialist doctors...
Go figure.
OMFG YOU HAVE GERD AND ARTHTITIS TOO
Yeah, smoothies and juices are just awful for you.
How's your lipid profile
Another great video Dr Berg. Thank you so much... Can you also make a video about hepa b? How to treat it and what to avoid. My doctor said that its not allowed fatty foods but i am doing keto and i feel much better and i also lose weight because i gained too much body fat thanks to keto.. But i am still confused 😕 I just wanna make sure that i am on a right track. Been following all your videos. You changed my life so much.. More power from the Philippines. 😘

Dr Berg, is green coffee useful for weight loss? BTW Love your videos. Have recommended your channel to all my family, few teachers and friends!
Thank you
Thank you Dr for the information. I believe I am insulin resistant because my fasting blood glucose ranges from 5.5 mmol to 6 mmol.
I am always following your content in order to gain knowledge so that my condition doesn't get worse
So glad you’re here! I always often wonder like my A1C is always 5.6. I want to keep it lower for good peace of mind. Looks like im ok 😅
Every video you have to repeat it several times to absorb it well 🙂
That was a perfect square around IR.😯
Anyway, learning about this for my brother. Thanks for the info as always.
it took 1 year on Keto to cure my type 2 and get my Homa-IR in "normal" range. I had high glucose in the morning for 9 months before it went below 100.
@Gordon Peters great job. What is you A1C running?
You said cured, so when you eat carbs, your blood sugars stay low? No more insuline resistance?
@@katkameo6413 I'm not willing to hear carbs yet. perhaps in a few years after my body has stabilized. I wrecked my body eating bread, pasta, beer and sugar. my fatty liver is reversed, by cholesterol is now normal without lovostatin and My A1C is 5. I understand your point. I guess instead of saying cured should have said my bloodwork is normal.
Great job!
@Saul Goodman meat and vegetables. I used the chronometer app to track carbs. I kept carbs under 20g a day and ate about 1750 calories a day.
Very good info. Was wondering why my husbands glucose was high in the morning although he is no longer consuming large amounts of carbs and since he came on board with me on the keto diet!! 🧐Will pass this great 👍 video on to him. Thank you Dr. Berg👏👏👏👏
And he'll need to build muscle to improve insulin sensitivity/ glucose control, and fight off chronic diseases, but strong muscles also help restore the gut microbiome! Stay well!
*A1C does give the patient & doc an overall idea as to whether diabetes is better, or worse than last time tested is better or worse. If a person goes from 7.4 to 10.5, well, that's a huge sign.*
A1C is garbage. It missed 73% of diabetics.
Well, I like Dr Berg but I am way from being Keto. I am a vegetarian who occasionally eats red meat and fish. However, no sugar (apart from fructose in fruit and veg) ,and no gluten. My Ac1 is 5.2 and Adiponectin 11.8.
I was high carbs sugar fruit for 50years. 5.5 (nov18).
Changed 180degrees, painfully strict now, this month only 5.4 😢
Keep going!!!
I have missed your videos!!! This looks delicious and I will prepare for my children on the holidayscehen they visit me! Gracie Willie!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Can you make a video about dry fasting?
Finally ~ A Dr. With and Explanation as to why my Sugar is high when I was Eating NO sugar, NO carbs...... Instead of telling me "your eating to much" when the dietitian said "your not eating enough"~!!! Thanks Dr. Berg~!!!! Not to mention I have too much Iron~!.
Please tell us more about anemia and diabetes. In what way does anemia invalidate a1c test?
you have less red blood cells therefor the test which is all about glucose sticking to red blood cells might show a smaller number but thats not from less sugar but from less red cells.
Thank you this help me a lot .I left you a long message on the last video I watched.
My a1c is 4.7
Fasting glucose is high between 117 and 130. I know I'm insulin resistant and that why I'm struggling to get my weight off. This helped me a lot. I think I'm gonna do extended fasting closer together. I don't know I'm so lost . I'm not gonna give up .I figured soon as I get my insulin corrected then I'll be able to shed the pounds. I'll just stay fat till that happens I guess.😣
A1C missed 73% of actual diabetics! Other fasting glucose tests are also terrible standards. The best way to measure INSULIN resistance is a Kraft insulin test (AKA postprandial insulin). Dr Jamnadas shares info on this test Dr Kraft created in the 80s.
To get your insulin levels down
1: eat fibrous WHOLE foods, mostly veggies, beans, nuts and meats.
2: build muscle several times a week, train gradually
3: Try working up to one meal a day
4: prioritize quality sleep, lower stress.
Good luck!
1:35 anemic alters test
I've been a diabetic since 2011. I have gone from Metformin 500 mg twice a day July 2012 - Sept 2014 to insulin injections of Lantus (Toejeo) & Humalog U100 with Metformin 1000 mg twice a day Sept 2014 - Nov 2017 & now on a Medtronics MiniMed 630g insulin pump 150 units Humalog U200 daily with Metformin 1000 mg twice a day Nov 2017 - 2019/present after having to change Medicaid providers.
Get a Kraft insulin test (postprandial insulin assay test). A1C and fasting glucose/fasting insulin tests are all garbage.
How about a video about ways to correct insulin resistance.
Exercise, Exercise, Exercise in addition to continuing to eat the right things and getting proper rest. The body will heal itself in time with the consistent practice of those things. He says it in all of his videos.
FB has tons of groups on keto - and IF too.
Bought some organic peanut butter. 6g of total carbs per serving, 2g dietary fiber, 1g of sugar. Where are the other 3 net carbs coming from? This applies to many nutrition labels. This might make a good video topic. Thanks Dr. Berg.
1 gm of sugar means its sweetened. Peanuts are legumes, they have carbs. Many keto people dont eat much, if any, peanut butter.
My god he is a true medical legend .
I'm an RN and I'm ashamed to say this.... if you're are looking to Western doctors to do anything besides put a bandaid (aka another prescription) on it and schedule you a follow up appt. Well, good luck. All of this to say, if you're feeling frustrated by your blood sugars. "Stick with it, I promise what Dr. Berg describes in this video is true". I imagine there are many many people out there that wouldn't have given up on keto if they could just watch this one video. Keep up the excellent work Dr. Berg!!!
Delayna, please don't forget the power of building muscle strength & moving briskly daily! Diet alone is not the solution to robust metabolic health 💪 nor a healthy gut microbiome.
**As an RN you'd probably enjoy reading the research article that found Myokines (muscle proteins) treated & prevented 26 different chronic diseases! Please share with your patients 🙂 keep up the great work you do!
Thank you Dr B. Always interesting 😄👍🏾
I wish you would do a video tailored to type one diabetics, what to eat and the use of keto.
Hi Dr Berg, I wondered whether you cld do a video on if intermittent fasting cld help with lipoma? Thanks 😊
But from the video, I take it that its a temporary situation and that as my IR is reduced, I should see my glucose level go down.
very interesting and informative... :)
Doc, could you do a video on plus and minus of blood donation with the keto diet and should you or should you not donate blood while fasting. Thank you.
blood donation help reduce accumulation of too much iron in the body! good to do once every 3 to 6 months on a day you not fasting..i get tired after a session so better not to fast on that day
Interesting. Alot of Doctors use that test to monitor their Diabetic patients.
Doc please make a video on HBSAG ...
Wow this makes perfect sense my morning sugar is always high like 99 waking up then I walk around for 10 or 20 mins then it's 230 no breakfast or nothing
Audio cuts out during your advertisement.
I have 2 doubts..
1) if doctors know that sugar will spike in the early morning, then why measure it as "fasting" test?
2) during post meal, should I consume my regular metformin tablet?
Putting your head in the sand will harm you. Get your morning fasting blood sugar test daily to know where you stand.
Omad is great, I love eating for 23 hours and fasting for an hour, very easy though my food bill gets expensive
Well good explanation, but DM is mainly diagnose by glucose tolerance test & you did not mention it in your vedio.
Thanks a lot Dr Berg 💖💖💖

What do you think about nutrigenomics, Doc?
Thank you! So that's what's wrong with me!! I was wondering why, after 5 months of a complete change of diet, I still couldn't get my sugar readings to lower.
4 Pillars of Health & insulin sensitivity:
1: eating whole foods (mostly veggies, beans, nuts, greens, meats.... Not man-made) & only eating 1-2x day
2: building muscle mass- muscle is body armor and lowers insulin levels
3: prioritize better sleep-- less electronics & less sitting through the day
4: less stress, healthy active hobbies + meditation
