Hi there! As I said in a previous video, Art of Fighting was my very first Neo Geo SNK game and I loved it. Characters, the graphics, the animations and it even had a story that ends in a cliffhanger. I was still learning about fighting games with Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, this game and Samurai Shodown, both blew me away completely. Thank you Nabil, for an awesome work on this documentary and bringing a lot of love for this amazing franchise. Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all.

I Love Robert Style in Art of fighting 1
AOF is criminally underrated. They never get credit for introducing the innovations that have become staples in fighting games [story telling and the Super moves] And sadly SNK treats the characters like jokes now. :(

I like the family dynamic. Even if they are treated like comedy characters. I find them more lively like an actual family. But I would like it if they were treated with more respect. I would love to see Ryo, Mr. Karate(Takuma), and King get more bigger roles.
Especially Ryo and King. Ryo was one of the original mains characters of SNK's older main series. But SNK does't treat him like that. King herself was the first playable AOF female character. She is one of the most under rated female characters besides Chizuru.
@@sladejosephwilson2300 They should definitely be treated better. This is why I'm not buying 15 until I see their endings and see how they're treated again. They were building up to Ryo going Mr. Karate so I'll really be annoyed if they give them another stupid joke ending.
@@IrishKyokushin I am still going to buy it because I have high hopes for it. I am pretty sure we will see Butt/Marco in the game. Ryo and Butt seemed very serious about leaving in kof 14? So we might see a new team
@@sladejosephwilson2300 I hope so, but I'm still going to take a wait and see approach. Maybe once they get off their backsides and start releasing the trailers I'll be able to judge.
Thank you for this great video! I live AOF! It's sad to see how people forgot about this great serie. Even in the Neogeo community fans, we always talk about Mark of the wolves or The last blade. But many have forgotten how much this serie brang a lot of things new to fighting games.

I was playing Art of Fighting and art of fighting 2 in my school days.
I first played this game on the Neo Geo Station, I think Art of Fighting is great, but I never got good at these games. It's a shame, because there's so much about AOF I enjoy.
I hope Art of Fighting 4 in the future and also WORLD HEROES 5😊😊😊😊😊

Great video! Top Hat Gaming released a video on the history of AoF a few weeks ago, and while theirs was good, this one was on a whole different level. Fantastic write-up of one of the games that's still a favorite of mine to this day.
Looking forward to more in this series, and especially looking forward to your eventual history of Fatal Fury documentaries (which are my favorite fighting games on any platform).

Very cool, well done. King has been my main in KOF ever since 94. So its really cool to see where the inspiration for that character came from.

For real. They are under rated. They don't get their own KOF 14 background theme for ps4 (but some how new characters get their own background themes), no figures, King didn't make into SNK heroines(what the hell snk?!), no online version of any of the AOF games on modern consoles by snk, the Art of Fighting team got made into jobbers in KOF destiny, and you have the same 4 AOF characters(5 if you count Mr. Karate) that make it in the KOF and no additional AOF characters make it in. If Butt/Marco shows up in KOF 15. Then that will be the closest thing to a new AOF character that we have being introduced to KOF since KOF 96(Mr. Big and I forgot about Kasumi.)

There are games before Art of Fighting that used a meter to execute a powerful super attack, 1991's Death Brade/Mutant Fighter (more like a wrestling game, but the same concept) is one example. Stamina gauges that affect the strength of attacks were also in boxing and sports games in the 1980s and even the 1970s

In NYC growing up in the 90's I knew a cat few years older, Fabian, he owned a red E30 M3, rocked Polo Snow Beach gear, and guess what, "The Neo*Geo" and Fabian was a white powder dealer.

I always have the impression that Ryo is tiger and Robert is dragon due to their hair color and fighting style, and I was surprise it's the other way around
Actually you're correct! Ryo is the Tiger and Robert is the Dragon. This is a very VERY obscure fact that isn't truy well explained.
@@cciwaltwls Ryo is the invincible dragon, you can see it in all wikis. However his fireball is called Ko-Ou Ken (tiger flash punch) and DP is called Kohou (tiger shout), vice versa for Robert.
I’d say this is the most underrated fighting game I know of. To me, it is legendary.
Art of Fighting was fierce when it first came out. This has potential beyond just a fighting game. I can see this as a Yakuza type game. SNK needs to do this as soon as possible.

Made to concurrence SF2, AOF introduced Zoom, Spirit power gauge, face modification, tired stand when character's health come under 30%, giant fireball (haoshokoken) and ultimate attack (kyokugenryuogi), possibility of multiple kick/punch while one jump, oponent may receive hit after KO or after hitted while a jump, KO from a very little punch don't make character jump back, character cry their rage even it's still not the final hit, final hit have its special sound FX (feel like a punch knocking your head), multiple hit attack make oponent flying (zanretsu ken "1000punch" inspired from hokuto's hyakurestuken "100punch"), characters feel more credible and less folkoric than SF2, global ambient too (music & background scene), colorimetry si a good balance between realistic and easy to watch . Character design made by guy comming from Capcom is sometimes said as the real face that SF2 should show.
Unfortunately, SNK was hurry and time developement too short (as often), animation frame, character balance, limited story mode (even it's more intense) and SNK's game difficulty (a wall for beginners) make this game underrated. AOF 2 was good balanced but it lost this feeling of surrealistic violence that AOF 1 has and new characters looks folkloric, then AOF 3 is quite different, smaller sprite size, manga colorimetry design, no face modification, surrealism feeling from AOF 1 is lost forever. Then SNK lost interest for this franchise.
Half of the bar raised by AOF 1 was forgotten and are still not used on today's fighting games.
I have no hope for a AOF4, cause we do not need AOF franchise, we need about spirit of AOF1, so if talent and smart developper may reproduce this feeling and think how to improve it, it's okay to me.

Art Of Fighting? Nice! This game is where the concepts of Super Moves and 'comeback mechanics' originated from. And because of that, I have a deep appreciation for the AOF series even til this day (despite the reputation it got throughout the years).
I also consider AOF the first 'anime' fighter.
It's not an anime fighter though.

Mr. Karate hands down is the Akuma of AoF. Is there gonna be the History of The Last Blade after this one?
The next series is the History of Fatal Fury. then KOF. The history of Kof was supposed to be filmed in japan this week, but coronavirus happened, so it is postponed until the situation is better. Will definitely be doing last blade but it will be a while.
But didn't Mr. Karate came out before Akuma made his 1st appearance?
@@sladejosephwilson2300 Yeah...but I'm saying in general I would often make Mr. Karate comparable to Akuma cause they're both powerful and they're merciless against weak opponents.

4:46 the true story is that Takuma sakazaki who left his children Ryo & Yuri (in the unique AOF1 SNES port ending) ,was involved in gambling and has big debt to Mr Big and his master Geese Howard, he worked for a time with them but has decided to quit ,he was asked to do a job (or a crime) but he refused so mr Big has kidnapped Yuri to force takuma to do it ,then he threatened Takuma not to let Ryo or Robert approach Yuri or she will be executed,that's why in first AOF he wore a tengu mask at the Karate Gym and opposed fierciely Ryo or Robertwho ignored his identity unless Yuri told them he's her father ,that's was the main intro of AOF2
the funny think, his son didn't know his father move set skills that have same like his skills haha.
