People that werent around back then really missed on arcades. Just walking in and it was dark but loud as shit. Street fighter just took everything over. People lined up, putting theirquarters on the machine to show they were next. I remember the weekend they got mortal kombat. I saw subzeros fatality and it blew my mind. The xmen game, the simpsons game, gauntlet. When mortal kombat 2 came out it was a wrap. There was a pizza place right near my bus stop that had it. You would have like 20 kids in there after school.
I liked AoF 3 a lot (maybe except for the roster designs), so I'd love to see a comeback as a 3D fighter, specially because Tekken is my favorite fighting game.
I was confused with Robert's home country. Spain, Mexico, or Italy? So I saw on SNK Fandom that he is Italian. Maybe his father's family has Spanish ancestors?
AI was definitely broken, probably more so than any fighting game ever but playing against another opponent I believe it is the best game of the the 3.
Check out basement brothers. You are in for a treat. They have a mission to go through all neo geo games ever released for the aes with in depth documentation of every game. A must watch!
He also claims it was difficult to use the Neo Geo's sprite scaling, when it just meant shrinking the original characters using a built-in hardware feature.
Great documentary. As a SNK games lover, getting to know the character's original draft designs makes my day. By the way in the AoF2 TV commercial at 22:54, the female who portrayed Yuri is Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ). More commonly known as ayu, she later became a popular music artist and still currently has a huge influence on today's J-POP industry.
You have great content! Watch your videos remember my good old times with my snk fans friends in 90's! And better, I can understand your english! Keep going! Greetings from Brazil.
7:06 It is not a "must" to press A or B button first before you can use C button. It defaults to strong punch at the start of the round, and will switch to the strong attack version of the last pressed weak attack button. 8:11 You only need to hold down either A button or B button to charge the spirit bar, not both at the same time. For KOF series, you have to press all three A+B+C buttons.
The fact that some channels says Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo started the super moves when Art of Fighting beat them by a couple of years. And if I'm guessing right, Takuma may have been one if the main characters from the SNK game Street Smart, given there is a man in gi and a blonde female that could be Ryo and Yuri's mother but they never mention what town or city they're in.
Your videos are very good and enjoyable. Small Trivia: In the CM of AoF2, the girl on the screen for a brief moment, who plays Yuri is Ayumi Hamasaki, who will become the queen of J-pop some years later
Cool channel man, as a neo geo fan and mvs owner with 25+ original games I appreciate the detail you go into in your videos. Art of fighting 1 was playable in my local fish and chip shop back in 92, it was amazing back then with zooming and massive sprites. I own all three art of fightings on mvs and also use mister fpag to play neo geo games these days. Just subscribed to your channel now keep up the good work 👍
Great doc man... thanks. Art of Fighting is still one of my favorites :). Still play them too. Just recently went through the collection to beat 1 and 2 lol 😆.
That's a brillian idea. An AOF fighting is obviously out of the question right now. The only snk fighter that we will get besides KOF and Samsho is Fatal Fury.
@@NeoGeoNow fully agreed. I can't wait to see what is in store for Fatal Fury. I'm thinking on the Yakuza styled AOF game, they could do like a "Story of Southtown" franchise that starts in the AOF timeline and goes all the way through the Fatal Fury timeline and it has carry over events so the things you affected while playing through AOF are still affected as you play through the Fatal Fury timeline. For instance, if you're fighting Jack Turner in the Kyokugen dojo in the AOF Southtown Story, when you come back to the dojo as the Fatal Fury cast, you still see some damages that were done to the building that havent been repaired or forgotten over the time. Of course Geese would go from the young geese version to the modern geese. Still in the Yakuza/Shenmue style. Southtown Saga: AOF and Southtown Saga: FF would be great
@@MarkLoweCEO yeah, i mean aof has aways been an revolutionary franchise and i think that's a great idea too due to the fact that there's no one seen a new aof fighting game coming anytime soon (i keep the hopes on that btw)

I was wowed by the bruises on the characters faces and how big the characters were too. The sound effect hits of the machine gun punches and kicks.
I feel like if they did with AoF3 like they did with SF3 and released updates to it, it would’ve had a different outcome and opinion about it in the long run.
This is a great documentary and you did a good job..... But there are some facts that you left out. Did you know that Ryo Sakazaki (despite being born in Japan) is actually being only half Japanese? Ryo is Japanese-American. His Japanese side is from his father, Takuma and his American side is from his late mother, Ronnette.
Art of Fighting was a step above the SF copy cats. You had a more "rad" version of Ryu and Ken in Ryo and Robert (the karate guy drives a chopper and the Steven Segal lookalike drove a ferrari beatin ass proving THEY'RE the strongest in town). Two guys that had all the personality that Ryu and Ken lacked. A fighting game that introduced detail and a simple plot in story rich with lore because of the setting and boss (making Mr. Karate therefore introduced as the first True Final Boss of fighting games). One of my more favorite fighting game franchises with such detail to story instead of exaggerating so much attention about it. It's so good to hear that SNK is ready to give it another shot. I would settle for an AoF4 that still looks like KoF13 if they do

If Takashi's sequel to Street Fighter is Fatal Fury then Art of Fighting is Hiroshi's prequel to Street Fighter, with him not being able to use Ryu anymore Ryo is definitely a chance to continue with Ryu the character he created. Also Art of Fighting is actually not Takuma's fighting game debut a younger version of Takuma was one of the main protagonist in SNK's second fighting game Street Smart in the game he's simply called Karate Man hence why he's called Mr. Karate in Art of Fighting.
Not much I didn't already know, but it's good to have everything in one video. 😉 One thing that always stuck out to me about this short-lived series is that it really had much more the feel of SNK figuring out just how much they could get away with than any kind of attempt at fun or memorable fighting games. The first was _incredibly_ stiff and clunky, the second hideously unbalanced with lots of hopeless matchups, and the third alternatively sluggish and requiring impossible reaction times. Granted, innovations like spirit meters, high-risk high-reward desperation moves, and snuffing out projectiles with attacks were nifty niche ideas, but there's a reason niche ideas often stay niche. To be brutally honest, I always found the Fighter's History games (which were _much_ more shameless ripoffs of Street Fighter 2) higher quality _and_ more enjoyable than Art of Fighting. It was a spite move by a bitter Capcom castoff, and once that stopped being relevant, so did it. It added to the lore of Southtown and provided a natural rivalry to the Fatal Fury squad, and that's the extent of AoF's legacy. Hey, more than Time Killers ever got. 🙂
They should have released a fourth game in 3D just like Street Fighter EX. I also would have loved to see an AoF vs FF videogame similar to Street Fighter vs Tekken.
