if you can razor the bottom then good,if not, not so good lol . bar that,its just less media youre working with. detritus is inside very rock so i dont worry about it in my sand :) i runbarebottom on some tanks but i prefer a natural look not glass box look
Totally agree. It’s a lot easier. Sand beds are nothing but traps. Only thing I have to is add nitrates. They bottom out if I don’t add. No matter how much I feed.
I have a bare bottom and you just confirmed my issue. My nitrates hovers around 3ppm and it won’t go up no matter how much I feed. I have to dose neonitro to keep my lps happy.
@@sayurasem I managed to get over this by adding another tang and feeding more frequently. It kept the algae down in the tank to almost zero and I now maintain a stable around 5 nitrate.

i was wondering i run a mostly sps reef with sand bed, i do the zeovit system with plenty of blue bottles,calcium reactor ,kalk reactor,co2 srubber pretty much all the bells and whistle . i guess my question is can i remove my sand bed? its a 3 and a half year old reef ,75 gallon display- 40 gallon frag tank- 30 gallon sump,total water volume is about 100-105 gallons with about 150-160 of marco rock. i increased my flow and now i have a sand globe with live fish. LOL your thoughts would be much appreciated

I'm thinking of slowly removing my sand and going bare bottom or minimalist sand. My tank just has too many dead spots and nutrient issues with a deeper sand bed. Any advice?
Did bare bottom on my 300 gallon. Down sized to 100 gallon with sand. Over a year and sand is as white as new. Have two tiger conch and a fighting conch along with a diamond goby. Yellow coris wrasse prefer sand.

I would do a bare bottom tank but only as a holding tank or a quarantine tank because I prefer a sand bottom since I have more surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on. Not to mention my wrasse loves to bury in the sand.
I vacuum out some detritus 1x a week at one end of the tank during a water change. I will also blow the detritus that collects at that end every other day with a power head.
There are certain wrasses that don't need a sand bed. For those that do you could use a container of sand on the bottom that they can burrow in at night.
@@ReefBum thats ok if you now exactly the spot they like, which is where they burrow, not cos the sand is there :) if less habitat tthere's less choice for them and us, just have to weigh those things dont cha ;)
Great job Keith! I went Barebottom first time in my life on my 400 gallon! I got the flow so dialed in I dont even have to siphon any detritus. Love sand but I am not one to keep it clean nor do i want any clean up crew that actually get the job done so loving Barebottom. I do however prefer white starboard look since it does appear to look like sand and reflects light better than a darker bottom. Even if it gets covered the small hinds of white I still feel make a difference in reflecting light on the undersides of acros!

I would do it slowly and add some live rock or bio media to your sump and also dose some bacteria to help maintain your bacteria population.

Did you put anything between the rock and glass on the bottom or just the rocks directly on to the glass?

Done the bare bottom thing multiple times. It never looks good in the end. Yes, sand is a pain but it just looks so bland without it
Disagree. I do like sand but bare bottom can look ace with encrusting corals.

There are wrasses that don't need sand, but you can also add a little sand box in the tank someplace for the wrasses that dig sand.
What are some good corals for the bottom glass? I just went bare bottom and need something to encrust the bottom.
Encrusting montis are good and chalices, although I am not into that stuff

mine sandwiches himself between the rocks in my bare bottom, seems fine with it

How did you get the sand out of the barebottom. Been thinking about doing this for my 350
