Great video. I have a 200g bare bottom myself that took a while to really get established. Adding Microbacter 7 as a monthly maintenance routine helped a lot.
Little over two years I started dry rock and bare bottom. It's just now that I can keep SPS alive. Growth is still slow on different SpS. But not losing any. I added the same sand to my 50 gal frag tank which is connected to my 150 display. I haven't really seen a big difference. Maybe I need more live sand. I still will keep my DT bare bottom since I took this long journey, Only hoping in the long run it will pay off. I'm sorry I didn't keep my live rock from my old tank. Definitely my biggest mistake. .
Sounds to me that there is light at the end of the tunnel for you. I would keep the bare bottom going for sure. You made it this far with the bare bottom. They say if its not broke don't fix it.
@@PittsburghReefJunkie I have to say that the nitrates and phosphate are much easier to control. If they go to low I just feed dry food that raises the phosphate. Nitrates are always low. So that part is really good. Like you said something in bacteria is a major roll in keeping Sps. But I also feel it’s something that’s leaches out of this rocks. One note it took over 16 months to grow Coraline algae which was when sps started to spread at base of the rock. That’s when things turn around.
@@bluereef9530 I had coraline 3 months into mine when it was bare bottom. Not sure if the calcium reactor played a bigger role in that or not. And my nutrients are tough to keep because if the fleece roller constantly pulling out food and waste. Nothing that a little reef Roids can't fix though. Sounds like you are are the right path though. Keep up the hard work!!
@@PittsburghReefJunkie did you add any Coraline Spores or anything with Coraline on it like a snail or frag plugs. I added Coraline from bottle and never took off until 16 months
@@bluereef9530 just snails. Which I'm sure the coraline came from. Possibly the few WWC frags or jason Fox frags back then had it on there. Either way I can't complain. Tank seems to doing well now. It's kinda finding its place. Other than the small issue which will be this Saturday's video. But even that is not anything major. BTW thank you for the conversation. It's nice talking to other reefers.
All was good after adding them for about a couple months then the STN started on a few, Then after about a week all my sticks RTN. All parameters are on point. Seems now that I have the sand everything is balancing out. Update video coming out this Saturday Ty.
@@PittsburghReefJunkie It sounds kinda tinny, but I think it will be fine once you get a lapel mic. Great content though. I'm getting ready to set up a 40g reef system, and debating bare bottom or not, you helped me decide, sand it is! I'm getting the ocean direct too and looking forward to sea sponges in the cryptic zone of my sump and hopefully they sprout up in the display too.
First let me say I did watch your whole video I have a few questions I have Ran bare bottom tanks with Coral and never had a problem let's put that aside what type of tap water are you using in your salt mix RODI water straight water out of the tap that you are using in your salt mix you haven't told us anything about any of that I don't care if you have sand or bare bottom tank that's not the point here what are your water parameters what is your alkalinity AKA dkh!!!!! What are your calcium parameters what's your pH not one time!!!!!! In your video have you gave us any of this information if your alkalinity and calcium is not right and you're using Straight tap water you're going to be in for a lot of trouble I never had algae problems in any of my tanks because one I only use RO water you never told us any of this information you're just talking about sand and your theories but no water testing what type of lighting are you running are you having enough par in your tank for the corals you have that's a whole new can of worms I'm not even going to go there right now here's another thing I don't care what type of Miracle bacteria someone sells you the tank is still going to go through a cycle for the first 3 weeks every other day I would test for ammonia and nitrite yeah you say your ammonia did not go up what about your nitrite is toxic you really did not give us a lot of information on water testing sir without that we really can't tell you what the hell's going on I can tell you one thing if your alkalinity is not right and your calcium your Coral is not going to do well and 90% of algae problems in tanks are from people not using r o d i water tap water is full of so much garbage you would not believe and some of the nutrients in tap water will cause algae bloom you have a nice tank but you need to give us some more water parameters which you did not give one I take that back you didn't mention your dkh but you did not mention a lot of other water parameters
Hi! Thanks your your comment! We do this reef build together. We use a 4 stage RODI unit, never straight tap water as you never know what will come tap water. As for lighting we use an aquatic life 61” hybrid using the T5 coral blue bulbs in unison with 3 kessil A360 tuna blues. We do test all parameters daily, maybe in the future we can do a live video of testing. Thank you again for the insight and comment!

Thank you. Hopefully you subscribed. Little more time and my 180 should be ready for new acros.
Thats what the sump is for lol. I use sand and brightwells brick in the sump.
Love your rock work!!!!! It simply looks amazing 👏. Greetings from Lancaster Pa
Thank you Konrad. That rock work was a year in the making. So I am happy to hear that it looks good. also greetings from the other side of the state.
Barebottom 4EVA
I tried Jake. But back to sand I went.
Since you have the apex, you can get dimmable ballast so you can dim the t5
Ted. Can I get more info on this please. A link or something. I'd like to look into this option!!

Did it work??? After adding the live sand
Actually my tank has become more stable. And corals have been doing better than ever.
After you added your first sps corals how long did they took to RTN?
All was good after adding them for about a couple months then the STN started on a few, Then after about a week all my sticks RTN. All parameters are on point. Seems now that I have the sand everything is balancing out. Update video coming out this Saturday Ty.
I dont mind the freshwater stuff
Thanks. The video is here if ya want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/q-3Zi-7Md5E/w-d-xo.html
Salt only for me
I stopped doing water changes every week and my tank exploded with growth and color
I have only done one water change. Only because my nutrients are always super low. I'm back now to dosing PO4 and NO3.
Good info. Please deal with the audio, there is some weird off-camera noise every minute or so in this video.
Thank you. That noise was a RODI unit on its way out. It has been replaced and that noise is now gone. Other than that, is the audio ok?
