  • Here's a quick look at my new Osprey Exos 48 rucksack and a comparison with my Osprey Kestrel 48. Which is best for wild camping? And which do you prefer?
    Both of these bags are an excellent option for wild camping, as well as long-distance hikes. They both have tons of features and are really comfortable and well fitting.
    Although they are similar prices, they are both suited to different environments and different types of trip.

      A touch over £100, but I got the Decathlon MT900UL a couple of months ago, seems similar to the exos but a bit bigger, with a side zip into the main compartment and with a rain cover supplied. Very comfy and can fit a lot of stuff in

    I have been looking at the exos for probably 4 months and missed it in the sale. I was absolutely heartbroken. I've just seen the kestrel online for £95 and thought I'd try and find a comparison. So pleased you made this vid mate. I'm just starting out wild camping and I think the kestrel might actually be the better fit for me. All the best 👍🏽

    I have the kestrel and find it to be an excellent product for my long distance hikes. The pocket you use for your sit mat is actually for your water bladder one point I would raise is when using the bladder the pipe needs to be facing the rucksack otherwise the pipe entry point to the bladder digs in your back.

Great bag though and very light. I fit my Hilleberg Akto in that front kangaroo pocket leaving the inside of the bag for everything else.

    I have the old kestrel 48. It's just the perfect size for me. Im not a hardcore camper tho. It's just perfect size for an overnight hike or couple of nights trip somewhere (weekend sort of thing). The side access zipper is the reason Im leaning to buying this newer version. Already have ROI on the old one.

    I have a 2019 Exos 58 for long distance, a Kestrel 38 for shorter hikes/overnighters and a Stratos 26 as a daypack. Highly rate Osprey for their value compared to the more popular roll top style packs from the States.

  • @chrishamilton2527
    @chrishamilton2527 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another good review.
    I sold my Exos 48 and 58 when I splurged on an Atom pack. I really regret that decision. I could pack more comfortably with the Exos 48 than I can do with the Atom Mo 60.
    The only down side with the Exos range are the sad little belt blisters (they are not pockets). It’s also a pity the Exos range doesn’t include a rain cover although I don’t ever use them (prefer internal waterproof).
    The nice thing about the Atom Pack is the material and available colours.

    • @ipedros7
      @ipedros7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I've been eyeing up he Atom packs. So many love them.
      On the Ospreys, I find the pocket sizes ok. At home, santa dropped a few new osprey bags, one 68L, a pair of 66L and a 30L. All the pockets look to be a similar size, same as the new exos. Ok for a mobile phone (S10+) and a few chocolate bars on one pocket and go pro in the other (room to spare). Suits me, but I guess some people want to carry more and why many end up adding a chest compartment.
      My Vango Ozone 40L, love the bag to bits but sadly... the pockets are mesh (and still no bigger). I end up having a ziplock bag in there in case its one of those 'rare' 324 days of the year where it does rain. Still, can't annoy me that much since I ended up buying the 30L version too. haha ATB

    Nice comparison Ben. Without checking I’d imagine you can safely carry a heavier load in the kestrel given it’s back structure and material. Exos is definitely one for hot summer with that nice cool back and minimal weight. Does it come with a bottle holder on the strap? I feel like the older version may have, but could be wrong.

    The Kestrel is now on sale as new model is out… I ordered it. Only true reason for more expensive Exos really seems to be less weight? I have an old Volt 75 I always managed to fill up. Was time to buy smaller pack. But that thing is solid.

    Gotta say the kestrel is more comfortable and stands up when you take it off rather than falling over like the exos does, surprisingly irritating!
    Don't find the shoulder straps on the exos to spread the load sufficiently they tend to squash into the shape of a small tube, haven't checked out the latest version tho

    I've got the Exos 48 and it's so comfortable but the frame makes the interior an odd shape and at the bottom where the frame curves there can be a void but I always fill with my spare socks etc.
    The good thing about Osprey is that they don't count the pockets in with the litre size so the 48 is equivalent to a 65 litre,

    Hey Ben, I have the previous generation Exos 58. I'm assuming the side compression straps are similar on the new model in that you can have them outside the side pockets (as you've found them), or rethread them so they're inside (which is how I have them).
    I love the Exos, but with loads of over 12kg, on longer hikes, it leaves my chest, shoulders and waist sore. That little bit more padding on the shoulder straps and hip belt would help massively, so if the new model addresses this then I'll be looking to make an upgrade 😉

    • @DaleyOutdoors
      @DaleyOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fit the Exos 48 2 times already in my local outdoor store and the side straps are the only things that kept me from buying it already. I didn't notice that you could thread them inside, so I guess I'm visiting the store again this week!!

      @DaleyOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@toon6476 there are no cut outs to thread the strap through on the new model 48. Unless it’s just mine 😆

    • @deaneager
      @deaneager ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaleyOutdoors No, Ben, you're right. You can't thread the compression straps inside the pockets on the new one - I couldn't resist taking a punt and bought the new model once I found the back length is adjustable, unlike on the old model (I figured it wouldn't need thicker padding on the straps if the back were adjustable, and therefore able to distribute weight better).
      The new model is better in so many ways, it's such a shame that the compression straps are a retrograde, all for the sake of a couple of tiny cutouts on the side pockets.
