You and that green exos pack inspired me during the pandemic to get out there and to take on 100+mile thruhikes, somthing that I had never even contemplated before. so thanks mate for the inspiration and for sharing your nog on tips, big up.

I own and now love this pack after one significant modification. Osprey, though, does some weird things. I improved my Exos 55 Pro by decoupling the bottom compression strap from the hip belt and modified the compression strap to run inside/hidden/under the side pockets. The pack carries just as well, maybe more comfortable after decoupling compression strap from hip belt. See Gregory Focal 55. I also detached and reattched in a new spot the up compression strap. Now able to compress the pack fully but have full use of stretchy side pockets with ease of adding and removing items from side pockets while still being able to compress the pack. Large front pocket detached from compression gives better use of it by being able to add and remove items while pack is fully compressed. Still able to put long items into side pockets and compress them inside the pocket if I choose to. Small slits in rip stop fabric, snall hidden hand sewn spots along with super strong waterproof fabric glue to seal was used. Result...it totally looks factory designed. Absolutely looks designed this way. Again, see the Gregory Focal 55 side compression straps that you can run under/hidden/inside side pockets. Why couldn't Osprey do this? I know why...because they unnecessarily attached side compression straps to hip belts. Osprey may disagree but my miles and mies with this pack mod proves otherwise. I don't use ice axes and added detacheable external straps to bottom of pack utilizing these unused ice axe loops in conjunction with a couple of webbing loops. This pack is now perfect. could you just not heat a screwdriver flat tip and melt a hole in the side elastic pocket just enough the thread the compression straps through ? I had this pack and was going to do that, ironically I now have Deuter pack within the same problem and will try this
@@wad6216 Maybe hot screwdriver would work to keep fabric from fraying. I went the fabric glue route that has been working very well for me.
I've had one backpack now.. Since 2001 it's a backpacker boulder 75. I'll never replace it. Too comfy and far too many memories with it🏕🏞 hiking all over the Drakensberg South Africa 🇿🇦 and now all over the 🇬🇧 uk. There's something special about old school quality 👌

For me the new Exos 58L checked all the boxes and saved a few bucks vs the Pro 55L.

Haze, what I do to store my poles is while the pack is on put the poles through your shoulder strap(next to your stomach) and put your sternum strap through the wrist loops on the poles!

With summer coming up and trying to lighten my load I have gone for the Exos Pro 55. I am sure I can get some makeshift toggles on the back to hold a tripod or poles. Not a deal breaker for me. The bag is super light and the side pockets fit ALOT in them.
Due to stock levels being super low for lightweight backpacks in the UK I was kind of forced towards the Exos Pro because it is readily available and the rice was half of the high competitors, BUT I am so thankful this happened because it has everything I need, especially for UK hikes and multi-days out. Great hybrid/lightweight pack and I cannot wait to get out soon with it. Thinking of doing the Coast to Coast.

Haz, in the days before osprey “invented” the on the go pole stowing system, we made our own just using a couple of lengths of elastic cord with a toggle clamp attached to each, one at the bottom of the shoulder strap, the other near the sternum part of the shoulder strap, put your poles in them and pull them tight! The original stow on the go system

Agree about the stow and go pole system. However I have copied it on some of my non osprey packs with ok results.
I'm using the Osprey Kestrel 48l M/L pack, I've had it for the last 3yrs. Would say it is the medium weight version of the Osprey Exos 48l (green/black version). The osprey packs are tough and dependable, mine has a few battle scars from various walks I've done. Great video as always, the puppy was the icing on the video cake

Thanks for the review! Im still using the Exos 48 (50 L since its large) from 2016 and the only thing i dont like are the hip pockets are too small. Its been a great pack and I love the trampoline suspension. I dont understand why Osprey would not include the loops for trekkers and other obvious things since thier packs are ususally so well thought out! Its good though that Osprey included the hip pockets again since these were excluded on previous versions.......and the question is why? 🤷♂️

Any advice on sizing mate? I’m 5 11 with 20in from c7 to top of hip but don’t know wether a s/m or a l/xl would be better?
I’m 5 10 and 21” from c7 to top of the hip. I got the l/xl and wish I’d got the s/m, the bag feels comfortable empty but when it’s full I can’t get it to sit right. I have adjusted the back length to the shortest possible length however it’s just doesn’t feel right.

I keep looking at all these modern "ultralight" packs and I think I should get one. But my old Karrimor Vallot from 1982(ish) is still going strong and only weighs 1.1kgs, which isn't that much more. It's built like a tank, very comfortable and holds 60L (with 2 detachable 2.5L side pockets if needed). No fancy frills but you can strap your tent on top or underneath when it's wet or if you need even more room. I guess I'll just stick with old faithful... Sometimes new isn't better.
That’s such a great Karrimor. I woulda loved to have it still on the market now 😅. My Karrimor Strata is 50l, but weighs 1.6kg 😅. Very sturdy and convenient, but too heavy for my long hikes.
Buy several over several weeks & return them, after trying them at home..unless your besotted & want to keep it.

To your credit I met a person 2 weeks ago who was nearing the end of the Wales coastal path, he had one of your Mo packs and raved about it. After what must have been 700-800 miles it still looked like brand new :)
Mate I beg you to review the 3F UL Gear Qidian pro rucksack. It’s a budget version of the atom pack but like 4 times cheaper, it has HUGEEE hip pockets and you can get one for £80 brand new, they are probably around 55 litres
Was curious on the Pro 55 but went for The Exos 48 after watching the review. There's lighter packs but the comfort for my old back is a must and I gladly sacrifice a few hundred grams for that. Found it on sale for 99.50 pounds didnt hurt either :)

The side compress straps also went over the side pockets and the same problem
I cut a opening hole in the side mesh (sealed it from fraying by heat)
It was an easy fix

An expensive mistake to make ! - Does a few grammes really make all that difference ? You are not exactly weedy..I personally just pack what I really need and and use a check-list. I am surprised you did not ask yourself if it ticked all the boxes when you bought it. I am sure you won't do that again. Can you not just return it as it is not suitable for your needs ? 1st world problems..Sir Edmund Hillary did not have these options and did more than ok !
Hello to the Cabin. I've literally just bought the Exos 38. Wish I'd got the 48, but the 38 was a bargain I couldn't refuse. I've found theres a way of threading the side straps INSIDE the side pockets, so that eliminates the 'tight bottle' problem. And who wants a tight bottle......?

Summing it all up, you could have done a 2 minute video from 10:14 onwards and reviewed the bag for 2 seconds. It would have been a success nonetheless.

Mate, I just wanted to thank you. I've just come back from buying one of these two packs to replace my old black and green Exos 58L (it's the love of my life, but she's falling apart now) and I could not for the life of me decide between them.
They're both such incredible packs you can't go wrong, and let's face it I'll probably end up owning both eventually. But I went with the Exos 48L and your video certainly helped focus my mind on what I did and didn't need. Lots of nice wee improvements from the old girl, but I think you're bang on with the head scratchers.
I get how they came to the strap organisation they did - having lower load stabilisers that go from the pack to the hip belt is pretty common in heavier more fully featured packs and it does help, and attaching them to the hip pockets means you can open and close the pockets with one hand which is a nice little detail I know a lot of people appreciate.
So good intentions, but like some of those gate builders they stumbled at final hurdle trying to combine the lower load stabiliser with the load compression, which means they have to commit to straps over the bottle pouch instead of their much more flexible in-out switchable system.
I'm thinking I'll mod mine with some short webbing and some Sea to Summit field repair buckles and run a short webbing length from the back of the hip pocket to the wee webbing loops on the lower back of the pack for the sleeping pad strap.
Anyway, thanks for this video and your thoughts, especially from a long time user and appreciator of the old Exos. And thanks for your channel and your videos, stumbled across your vids recently and have been loving them all.

Those letters that the pack is made of is the 'scientific' name for dyneema. I was gonna get new exos but the compression straps on the outside of the side pockets were a deal breaker for me so I've stuck with the same black and green one you have - The best version of this pack IMO.

I don't have one but the Gregory Focal looks very similar to an Exos except the side straps run under the pockets.
Some zip ties & paracord / bungee cord, could improvise a few loops for trekking poles
I was literally sitting here debating putting my Exos 48L old design backpack on ebay (though mine is the Orange/black rather than the green) as I have never used it but this has me questioning if I should or not....

Great review - i forgot about the trekking poles or lack thereof.... i copied what the original Exos did and duplicated it. It would be a no goer without that. Now that i have it, i am well happy and as said did brilliantly on the CWT.
Used my Exos 48 for the first time this weekend for an overnight trip up /down Kinder. I have the grey/black/orange one. It's not the lightest modern pack by any means, but what I need at my age (55 years young) is comfort and this is where the Exos delivers. I saw the 'Pro' didn't have stow n go points in someone else's review and that was a deal breaker for me as I also rely heavily on walking poles. I now have 3 Osprey bags that cover all my requirements - Stratos 36 (winter day bag), Exos 48 and Atmos 65 (winter overnighter). I also nicked your idea of using the OMM chest pouch for nav and vlogging kit.
I have the 2016ish exos 48 and prefer it over the new one. Pockets feel better. I love the chest strap stretchy pockets for my phone and it's still very light. I feel like the slightly later one they removed some features. Not sure why

I have the 2021 eja48, which is terrible! The lasses ver of the exos... So i got myself an atom+ but went to try it out first and it was comfy as! And top quality, well pleased with it 😊.

Could you mod the new bag with some extra straps? Then you can attach your poles and tent where you want them.
How do you compare the comfort between the two?
The HDPE fabric is basically polyester instead of nylon. Might feel different but lots of advantages

Which of these was the more comfortable?
There's a few loops on the bag that can be used to modify a stow and go system. I bought some plastic tubing, some elastic cord and some of those spring loaded toggles. I've made a couple of loops and attached them to the loops on my exos pro and they work a charm.
There was nowhere to stow my hiking poles on my Rook 65 so I bought some bungee straps with sliding adjusters of eBay for about £4 and they do the job perfectly.

Hi Hazy, Can you or anyone else recommend any waterproofs? I recently bought a set of OMM waterproofs costing me about £300 and I am not happy with them, they seem to let the water in.
I've got £300 pound Goretex, £300 Paramo(x2!) , £120 Alpkit(super lightweight) and £60 Peter Storm and they all get you wet eventually, it's just a question of whether it's water coming in or sweat trying (and failing) to get out! About the only thing I haven't tried is a poncho, but I don't fancy the volume of material flapping around when on a narrow windy mountain ridge!
The Berghaus Deluge range are my goto for over-trousers, they keep the water out and are easy to pull on and have full length ventilation.
I just use a light running jacket and nothing on the bottom half. Skin is pretty waterproof so in summer I think it’s best to just wear quick drying shorts and T-shirts. Winter is a different animal 🦔

Fantastic review. I think this is one of your best especially as it comes from all your experience. It seems really strange to call it a pro but not have the facility for tracking pole storage on the go! I would have thought that would be a "PRo" feature.

Dude the outtake with Fern and your pup was priceless. I've got an older version of the 48 (in large which means it's actually 51L), and it's also one of my goto packs. I switch out packs pretty regularly depending on length of the trip. I've also got a ZPacks Arc Blast from 2014 that still works great, a custom made hammocking pack, and a Six Moons Minimalist. They're all great packs, but each has its pros and cons. Which is why I switch them out just about every trip.

We have a hiking trip on the JMT in August and I am up in the air on this pack.
I know a lot of people lean towards the ultralight packs on this trail, but my full load will be around 15-18 pounds, so I am at a crossroads as to which route to go (ultralight or this pack).
Comfort is honestly the most important thing to me, and that might sway me towards this pack.
Just wanted to know your thoughts on this.

Felt a bit flush and bought Osprey for the first time recently. Went straight to 55L for a bit more space. Like it but agree on the materials. It is weird. Take the Zpacks Duplex tent or something - it looks like the plastic wrap my last telly arrived in. Guess it's the futuuuuuuuuure 🤖🚀 (it's 2023, where's my Osprey jet pack?)
what about flex capacitor? it lacks mesh pocket at the front,but belt pockets are much bigger,
good ventilation, and for me very comfortable,carries weight very well,
Love my Exos 48L. My goto bag. Couple of drawbacks including overall weight limit but just need to keep the weight down
Thanks for the review. I’ve just been looking at bags that are lighter than my Atmos 65 and the Exos came top of the list. I use hiking poles as well, so I think that the smaller (older) version will be the one for me. I also love the shed! Keep making the videos - they inspire me to get out and walk (currently in Dartmoor and looking forward to some better weather tomorrow). All the best!

Just not too sure about the back adjusting system.
I have heard some people complaining about the stratos and is exactly the same plastic adjusting thing.
There's now a Pro version of the Exos?! But I haven't yet used my new Exos 58L that I persuaded the missus to buy me for my birthday 🙄 But after watching this review, I think I've chosen the correct bag 👍 I'm just waiting for colder weather so I can give it a try.

I used in for 400km+ but was thinking if I should get Pro or maybe some other one.
Id like something a bit lighter but I love it in general and back system+frame are awesome.
I also agree with you when it comes to all the straps and its a big mistake removing them from Pro...anyway maybe another version will be much better in 2-3 years? Atb
