That is crazy beautiful. I watched this step by step and tricked out my little 800 square foot ranch style house. Ur a great teacher. I didn't use the cove. I did every doorway and window. And added 5 foot high recessed wainscotting to the walls. It added so much character. I sold it on 3 days. I ran and purchased another little ugly house and I'm doing it again. Thank you! Ur making me so much money. Lol. There was a bidding war for my little house. Lol And trust me...there was nothing else special about it beside the gardens. Another youtuber taught me how to be a master Gardner/Landscaper. Your house is lovely! It has a kind of class that you don't see much of when guys decorate. 2 Thumbs Up!

I found this series just in time to trim out a rental house I getting ready to sell. The old trim was in very bad shape so I stripped it out, retextured the walls, & repainted. I have been concerned about doing all the trim from scratch since I've never done it before. This looks well within my ability and I agree with your idea of painting everything before installation. In my rentals, with stained molding, I have used trim screws to install all the molding. When it s time to paint, I can pop the trim off, paint without any cutting in and reinstall the trim, It's fast and easy. Unless I point it out, no one even notices. Thanks again for the videos.

Any idea how to replicate an original 1909 craftsman door trim as close as possible? It’s got more layers on the side trim, and the crown thing is a bit more ornate and less boxy. It’s also got a much thinner bead with no sharp edges.

Tom O Thanks for watching Tom. No, I did not do a video of that passageway but it is the same concept. I used 3/4" pine boards to face the inside part and then build to craftsman style trim around that. Hope that helps out.
Thanks for the compliment! I use pine. It's not as expensive, it's stable, and pretty easy to work with. I have also used poplar. Same good characteristics but it's a little more expensive.

I love all your videos, so much detail. I am getting ready to replace all the baseboards & casings throughout my home. The husband does have some wood working tools but certainly not like your shop (yet!). May I ask how you prepped your pine? The stock pine at my big box store is warped and very rough & I only have a small electric sander. Also,since I will be painting all my trim work white would it be better or acceptable if I went with mdf for the side casing & header, then use wood for the smaller pieces (bead, cove, & cap)? We love your videos, any advice much appreciated!
MsTavi1977 Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate you watching! I buy the pine from Lowes. They have pretty good pieces there. You really not have to do a lot of prep work on in. I knock the hard edges off with some 220 sandpaper. Then just a good coat of primer and it's good to go to paint. It's trim and not furniture so I don't worry too much about it being perfect, you know. Many folks use MDF but I'm not a big fan of it. It's messy to cut, heavy, and not as durable. Just my personal opinion though. Good luck!

Thanks for the videos. Easy to follow . My problem I two(2) door openings that on the one side the mouldings butt together in the corner. I also chose to use flute boards on the side instead of plain board. Any suggestions??? Thanks.
In the brown room you have two door ways pretty close together. Why didn't you make them the same finished height even tho' the openings probably be made the same?
Shouldn't you install the header first? You make sure it's level first because no house is absolutely level. Each side trim could easily be off by 1/8" or more.
I'm surprised you put arched doors in the craftsman style door opening. It looks great now my doors all 15 need to be hung and trimmed. The special order trim has been planed on the back side down the center. So now if I want to install like you did I will have an opening on the ends above the doors. My doors are all natural alder so caulking the exposed ends is out of the question. What would you suggest ? Thanks
Yo Man, I see it's an old post, but still curious what you ended up doing? IMO, if you are planning to paint, then who cares about using caulk putty or whatever filler? However if you're not planning to paint and want the natural look of wood- that is going to take a professional or artists touch, and not always the best job for diy'ers to try and tackle.
Rick the Swift he was not painting rick, he was using alder which is a high priced wood they use for trim and cabinets west of the Mississippi, specifically in the Colorado region. What he was describing was instead of filling with putty or caulk and then painting like the rest of the country does, he needed to put a mitered return on each end and that would solve it. Each one will require either 2 miter cuts or 4 depending upon how your doing it and what skills you have , a little wood glue and will only take a couple min per door
You should ALWAYS paint AFTER installing for a professional looking job. Things need to be spackled first, primed, caulked then final painted. Can't do that before it's hung!
Respectfully, You couldn’t possibly be more wrong and its obvious u never have been in the trenches of this task... when painting,, a nice finish, especially over wood , takes many ,many layers and coats,, primer is always the best first coat but not always required.......,but ya how easy is it to paint some trim when its full length, all stacked on waist high sawhorses and an ol tarp underneith... quickly gas on a few coats ,,, rather than doing the brunt of painting in a nice finished area that all needs masked off, and delicacy is slowing everything down..
Quite the opposite. In fact, for my interior and exterior window casings I completely fabricate, prime and paint before installation, then attach with a handful of finish screws, fill holes, run a bead of caulk and touch up. If I need to replace the window the casing comes off as one unit.
I had removed some tongue and groove paneling from the walls in my living room(from previous owner install). I want to trim out the door as you did, but all of the door casing sit proud of the sheetrock, up to 1/2" thick in some spots. I guess I could remove the door frame and use a table saw to trim some off the frame. But, does anyone have a better, more efficient way of doing it? Thanks!
Use filler pieces around the outside edge to fill the gap behind the trim. Attach them around the outside edge of the trim so that the gap does not show.
looks real nice, but after ripping, routing, and cutting all those pieces i cant believe you still payed money for that trim gauge instead of making one from scrap
Rick the Swift by gluing 2 pieces of scrap together that runs up and down the door jamb and the piece glued to it protrudes across to where the casing will be and you cut it off at 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4” of reveal, depending on how much you want. I’m not the best to tell ya how but I could make ya a truckload of em in an hour or less that’s how easy it is. Good luck
Why are you doing craftsman trim on a Santa Fe door? That is NOT a craftsman door. Santa Fe is a southwestern style and looks ridiculous with Craftsman trim. Also you guess 2 hrs for ONE side of trim? I wouldn't hire you.

blazingnailgun , it looks like the top cap is ripped from a 1x4. Do you do anything with the width? The video makes it look smaller than 3 1/2 inches.

Shelley Pace because they are different height doors so you can’t trim them the same. That’s a patio door and they aren’t as tall as a bedroom door

So what was the header dimension used in the larger one? I have a similar setup and was going to ask the same question as sb0494
