I said "it's because he's bald" everyone laughed then it got quiet quick, he slowly walked over to me, leaned towards me and said "that was a good joke" then we contiuned practice.

We used balaclavas at fort wainwright, folded into a beanie when it turned ECWCS season. We never ever got to wear the fleece cap, except maybe in the field sometimes. Even when doing pt it was balaclava.

I wasn't enlisted during beret time but my first unit (11 ACR) was allowed to wear them for a few years during Vietnam. I'm not sure of the story behind that. The only time we could wear the wool cap outside of PT was in the motor pool. You always kept one really good patrol cap for guard duty and it was starched/sized and blocked. The ones for the regular duty day I washed 3-4 times without wearing, rolled them up and let them dry. The only other headgear we were authorized to wear was your Cavalry Stetson if you earned your spurs as we didn't have a regimental event for the dress cap unless you were an officer.
As an old soldier I always loved the Overseas (i.e., Cunt Cap) especially since I was Airborne! The Overseas Cap with 'Glider Patch' was ALWAYS my favorite!
OK, another Cadet from a long distant past. I was a cadet in the late 1970's and was in CAP until I went active duty. In those days we wore the old OD's with the OD baseball cap. Until I went to the Blue Beret encampment.
I actually enjoyed it. Its where all the orose of uniform went for me, especially with ACU when i served. You always knew who took the time to make them fit well

I was stationed up in Alaska. Fleece cap was definitely my head gear of choice, when it was allowed. Neck gators and baklava was the main thing we wore in winters. Now that's the cold weather goat.
How about the old bdu boonie caps? Those were badass and if you got the chance to "acquire" one when leaving you will wear it outside of service as well. Whether its the old green bdu boonie or the desert bdu boonie
I had an OD Green boonie cap for Cadet FTX abroad. Lost it sometime in junior year and couldn’t figure how I lost it. During senior year FTX I found it…in my company commander’s possession. Never did get it back.

I think the U.S. Army should make the tan fleece cap the primary winter headgear and worn between the dates of 1 October to 1 April. They should have the rank Velcro on the front and have the name tape sewn in the back, similar to the patrol cap. The same rule applies to the black PT fleece cap
