      @@alainlaverdure1674 If it's good enough for Lou Reed himself, it should be good enough for you. This cover is rich and haunting.
      "Reed himself called the Canadian band’s 1988 version “the best and most authentic version I have ever heard.” It’s a funny word, “authentic,” considering the feel of their version was far from the rockin’ version of Reed’s Underground original. But it’s hard to disagree with him. While the song has been covered by countless artists, from Mott the Hoople to Liz Phair, Gang of Four to R.E.M. to Phish, the Cowboy Junkies give it a romance-in-the-stars lifeblood never before heard in those three simple chords. It’s hushed, tender, angelic and simply gorgeous. It’s where the heart overtakes the mind."

      @@bugpalThere's plenty of room for both versions (BTW, the "rocking version" was NOT Velvet underground, but Reed solo - see the incredible live album, Rock & Roll Animal). The original version by VU was actually not far from THIS version, but released while VU were still together.
      That said, while this particular version is definitely beautiful, it pales next to the sparsity of their studio version. I think it would've been better if they hadn't added the accordion.

      I hope it's true the this was Lou Reed's favorite version of Sweet Jane. It's mine, except for maybe the 3-minute lead guitar duet introduction of the first song on the live album Lou Reed, Rock 'n' Roll Animal.

    loved the Junkies, their Misguided Angel is the one that did for me, hit me solid at the time, I was 21 and going from my solo James Dean around town life to marriage and a factory job, nothing has ever been the same since, like Springsteen song The River, I spent all the time since those days reeling and loosing, or so it seems, but I rarely allow myself the melancholy, but when I listen to certain songs and bands they take me back to another time and place, one in which I often wish I could stay.

      why are peeps over the age of 40 so obsessed with creating a binary between when a single editing tool existed, before and after? it's like on every single video from VHS or whatever, someone's gonna make some arbitrary boomer remark about auto-tune being the fall of musical civilization. much more important would be the telecommunications act of 1996, which changed privatized radio forever and made it safe, bought homogenized bullcrap, and the advent of digital workstations in general. much bigger factors in music changing. auto-tune is hardly even used in obvious ways anymore by music that means anything to anyone, except for very subtle pitch correction. big effing whoop. not the separator of good and evil, musically speaking.

    To add to my earlier comment, I really like the song and the band performance. They play really well together. They have an eccentric look with a little bit of mystery. They remind me of certain musicians of the late 60s and 70s like Fairport Convention and other folk rock bands. Each member and performer are artists. Interpretations of their work and art is often only left up to us.

    Johnny Carson was known as the King of Late Night. Part of his success, of course, stemmed from the wide array of musical acts that debuted on the Tonight Show during the many years the program was his. This performance by the Cowboy Junkies was certainly impactful. I've listened to them perform this song for hours on end, on repeat. Sometimes a song hits me like that, where I just can't get enough of it. This is beautiful music.

    They were such a good band. I remember first discovering them in the 80's. Good music and good memories. Though they wrote many good original songs, it's weird for Johnny Carson to say they were "original" just prior to them playing a cover.

      The Cowboy Junkies had an incredibly unique sound. Carson was simply regurgitating what countless critics had said. Lou Reed, who wrote the song, thought their version sounded unique and original. It wasn’t weird, it’s weird the two of you were too simple to understand that playing a cover doesn’t make you unoriginal, ya rubes.

    • @Chubbydippin
      @Chubbydippin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@elena7069 They had, no doubt, a unique and original sound as a band. I still have the original vinyl I bought from back then. What I think about what Johnny Carson said, and what I still think and value in this band, are 2 entirely different things. To lump the 2 together is just silly and quite a reach. Nice try though. Seems as though an imaginary chord was struck in you to make that response to my comment. Glad you got that off your chest. I hope you feel better. I really think you're making progress and I'm proud of you.

    Omg! My first exposure to this song was mott the hoople, awesome loved it and still do. Then I heard the velvet underground version, holy crap! Even better! Now this, where the hell have I been. This was on Carson a couple years after I heard Lou's version. Small Town Indiana childhood restricts so many possibilities. The cowboy junkies have figured out this tune.

    When I listen and watch this elegant woman move as she sings, I'm reminded of a Theodore Roethke poem:
    I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
    When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
    Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
    The shapes a bright container can contain!

    Happened to be living in Montreal when they first came on the scene and got to see them go from bar band to selling large venues. As you can guess, the early bar band days were much more special, with people sitting cross-legged on the floor, holding hands and gently rocking back and forth in unison during this and other songs. You knew they were going to go far. Sadly, within a few years, it became a real pain to get tickets to their shows, which were in large theatres where you had to sit in your assigned seats and not get up and dance. The same trajectory of countless bands before them. Success equates with a separation from the grass-roots fans who originally supported the band in the first place. Happy to have seen them in their prime and happy to hear that this was Lou Reed's favourite cover of the song!!

    Beautiful! Can't believe I never hear of Cowboy Junkies, but they summarily nailed a great song. I have to say, however, I'm having a hard time understanding their interpretation. It's not just "the slow version", but rather a revision of thought, feel, and message. Puzzling, but I do like it. Their later version (post 2000) is much more approachable.
