    Nice fix Phil, what a horrible pot 😁

      Thanks Mike. At least they designed it to be fairly accessible.

    Great fix. It sounds great. Denon is excellent quality audio. I remember using Denon CD cart players when I worked in radio in the early 1990s.

      It's nicely built inside. What did you do in radio?

      @@PhilipBryden I started as an on-air operator (pre-computer automation early 90s). I would Play music via Denon CD carts, and use Reel to Reel tapes for the pre-recorded announcer breaks and commercial breaks. Then I was a radio announcer for a few years after that.

      I googled CD carts. Why does the CD have to be in a case? Just to protect it?

    • @yanghao8351
      @yanghao8351 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PhilipBryden The cart idea was not new in radio in the 90s. For years they used tape carts for 30/60 second advert spots (called Fidelipac and they look like 8 track tapes). Along with protecting the CD, the CD cart was easy to use. Just put it into the cart machine dial up the track and push play.

    That thing is really cool. What a lucky find!

      It's a very nice piece of equipment. The sad thing is, nowadays, unless you can connect it to the internet and speak to it, people don't want it.

      @@PhilipBryden I want it specifically because it doesn't connect to the internet or have a microphone :D

    Hows it going young man, i love these old stereos from back in the day, todays versions just dont compete.

      I'm good thanks Matthew. Like I said in the video, this one is surprisingly heavy for it's size. It's a shame I don't have a use for it. The older stuff looks better too IMO.

      I bought a Kenwood stereo amp years ago, sounds great and still works as it did when I first bought it. I'm going to look out for Hi Fi stuff.

      @@PhilipBryden good on you, the old classic equipment is the best, you might be lucky and get an old valve amp one day 😁

      @PhilipBryden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I probably would pass on the old valve stuff, can you actually buy replacement valves? They're probably cost a small fortune.

    Thanks for this video. I used it to get inspiration for fixing the volume knop on a Denon DRA-F101 receiver with a similar problem. My solution was to remove all existing lubricant instead of putting in new. Worked really fine too.

    been looking why the pots leak or oily outside and have issues, its got tobe down to the original oil has gone and clogs contacts inside

    • @PhilipBryden
      @PhilipBryden  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I suppose all oils and lubricants break down over time. Thankfully it wasn't too much trouble to re-lube this one.

    Thanks for this Phil. I own a Denon UD-M3 (bought new in late 90s) which is still used as my 'main' hifi & it works perfectly except the same issue with volume knob (been like it for years, I only use remote) & CD open/close (it often self closes immediately after opening as falsely detecting obstruction?). Now I've seen how easy it is to fix, I'll do that, so many thanks!
    One question though: is any lubricant really needed? I suppose limiting corrosion (not sure if contacts are dissimilar materials) but risks preventing connection? But if it works afterwards, all good.

      Hi Mike, thank for getting in touch. I'm not too clued up on CD tray mechanisms, so I'd probably just try to clean any dust and fluff of the rails and apply some new lithium grease. For the volume wheel some contact cleaner spray should work too. It doesn't seem worth spending money on a spray that you're only going to use once.

    • @mikeburgess5760

      @PhilipBryden thanks for reply. Whilst I don't have dedicated products like Contact Cleaner & DeoxIt, I have 99% IPA & an effective All Purpose Cleaner (Bilt Hamber Surfex HD) & also plumber's grease (silicon), lithium grease & anti-sieze 'grease' (from Shimano for bicycle components - I ought to read chemical spec sheet to see what it's made from) so can probably do a good job with those.

    • @PhilipBryden
      @PhilipBryden  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I had to re-watch the video. So clean the contacts with IPA then use some grease between the black plastic and the metal house, so it turns freely. Any plastic friendly lubricant would be ok.
