Halloween Is Over but The Spooky Openings Continue!!!! Please CRUSH that LIKE button below the Video to thank you the awesome people at MTGCARDMARKET, and if ya want me to find a way to get the Commander Decks rolling today too!!
Wow, this Brings back Memories. Way back in 1994, someone gave me a Starter Deck, and on the drive home, glancing at it I wanted more, so I stopped, and picked up some Booster packs of "The Dark" which has just released. So yes, I was playing back in those days.
If you haven't seen by now, sadly the Savaen Elves is not a misprint. I have many that are just like that, though I have no idea why they made them that way. EDIT: Saw that you acknowledge this later in the video, sorry :P
For people who are curious; it seems packs of the Dark contain 2 uncommons and 6 commons. The uncommons can be U1 or U2 (so some are twice as rare as others) and the commons are mostly C3, except for Maze of Ith, which is a C1 (so Maze is actually a common, but three times as rare as all the other commons. That still makes it more common than both the types of uncommon, though).
+Showsni Except -- pulling a Maze is actually more difficult than most of the U2s, and a lot of the U1s. I pulled one out of almost half a box of packs I bought at a gaming store many years ago. I ended up with one Maze of Ith, and five Skull Of Orm, for example.
Damn you just brought back ALOT of memories. I just started back on a couple months ago. Great cards you picked up! I must've had a majority of those. Can't wait to see whats in store for the future! Thanks!
I'd be interested in that too. Both sets have fantastic, iconic cards and they're not even that expensive compared to stuff he's already done. Champions boxes are only like $300+ ish and Betrayers are like $250 ish. The major problem I see with actually doing it though it that pretty much no one has them in stock.
Thanks for this opening! Happy Halloween! And thank you to MTGCardMarket, I'll certainly be giving them by business when I'm looking for more cards. :D
Hi, I really like your videos and I was wondering what you do with your opened booster wrapping ? I'm asking cuz I happen to collect them and if you are throwing them away I would like to see with you if we could find a way that I could get my hands on them. thanks !
Awesome video, i didnt start back in the dark but through edh got to learn about/appreciate the game from where it started to where it is today. I could only dream of opening/owning alot of these older cards was fun to watch :D
Love the old stuff. I was playing back then and Ball Lightning was the stuff. PS - I love the chuckle and bone flute. We had many jokes for it back then....
I played Limited Beta through Alliances. Haven't played since, pick up a pack or two out of curiosity now and then, and still casually follow the game...but I was HARDCORE in the early 90s. Still have many thousands of cards Beta-Alliances. Just sitting on them, don't need the money (until I officially retire).
Great videos you got here. You've earned a new subscriber. On a random note when I was 9 years old I got my first packs of Magic cards which were from Torment. Back then I just collected cards though for the fun of it. Earlier this year I came across all of my Yugio, Pokemon and Magic cards and sold most of them including my Torment MTG cards (roughly 60 in all). Three months later (this July) I started playing Magic. I am so mad that I sold my cards.
i have seen a few of your vids and i keep hearing about the back card in packs being bent. could it be from the way you are opening them? seems like the back card gets bent the same way no matter what set you are opening. Just a thought. Keep the vids coming, gets me through work!
the gark was u1 , u2 , c1 ,c4 type rarity i think maze of ith was c1 that is why maze show ups in common slots first two are your uncommons , next six are commons and for those that dont know what c1 and u2 means there was a uncommon sheet printed and on that sheet a u2 was printed twice thus on a printed common sheet a c4 was printed 4 times !!!
I've done some research, found my old mtg Official Encyclopedia (1996, colab with The Duelist magazine) and found out that The Dark (and all the other 8-card packs from those days) actually don't have any rares in them. They used a system with C1-2-3 & U1-2-3 where the U1 rarity can be considered a Rare and the C3 rarity can be considered a very common Common. Maze of Ith for example is actually a C1 rarity and one of the, if not THE, rarest common from The Dark.
If you're playing modern i'd recommend the event deck "March of the Multitudes." Also, check out Tolarian Community College for videos to help with those things.
Also, I paid about $500 for my box of the Dark about a uear ago. I sold the packs for $11 plus shipping on eBay. Kept ten packs for myself and pulled that one Maze of Ith.
I played before the dark came out. I remember when revised came out I was happy cause I could get some good cards for cheap... Wish I had those old cards now!
This was the first expansion that released after I started playing--Legends and Revised were the sets on offer when I started, though Legends was $5 a pack and limit one per customer at the local shop. Crazy times. This set was so bad. That's not a popular thing to say because there is some strong nostalgia from a lot of players who started in 1994, just like me. But aside from a tiny handful of cards, most of these were just not good. Stop and think about it for a moment. Even at today's booster prices. Look over the lion's share of these packs that were opened in this video. How happy would you be to open them and be greeted by the crap inside? And I'm not talking the $500-600 booster box price. I'm talking, you just ponied up 3-4 bucks and opened the pack. I wasn't yet experienced enough, but could tell a lot of these cards were bad. A few of the guys I gamed with who did get in earlier made fun of the set and hated it. I was spending my limited but nonetheless hard-earned cash on boosters and after crapping out one too many times, I gave up. What's funny though is that I think I had four or five Mazes of Ith? And get this, fellas--the card was so obnoxious in those days, it was actually restricted not long after and stayed restricted for five years. Creatures were so bad in those days, just a couple of Mazes of Ith would shut down those shitty creatures so utterly and completely, they had to restrict the card. I appreciate the vid man, I know it had to be a blast opening these old packs, but when it comes to The Dark in particular, nostalgia ain't what it used to be. (I also sort of hold the controversial opinion that overall, Fallen Empires is a *better* set than The Dark, if only for the fact that The Dark was a random splattering of stuff with only a tiny handful of gems, while Fallen Empires at least was a set that tried to emphasize tribal synergy.)
Lovely video yet again Jeremy, and i gotta say The Dark is one of my favorite sets, and Maze of Ith one of my favorite card in mtg. This got me so excited to see, Thanks man
The big printing mishap in The Dark was with Runesword. There was a "hairy" Runesword that became kind of famous. Another version has the hair edited out where the text was, but still visible above and below the text. Finally, a third version did not have any trace of the hair at all. From what I can see in the video, you have the third version that does not have a hair on it.
These giveaways and cool videos are awesome. Thanks for making Halloween fun, Jeremy. :) You are by far my favorite MTG youtuber. TH-cam is like "Subscribe to AbsoluteMTG!" and im like no fuck that, its all about that MTGHQ.
wow, I'm surprised you didn't get a frankensteins monster in that box, he wa as a a,chase card as well when the dark first came, seeing that I started playing about a year after the dark was released, all I wanted was that card, I bought so many packs, I must of pulled at least 10 maze if ith, 3 blood moons and 2 ball lighting and never pulled one, did I also mention that I was a new player at the time and I had no idea what those other cards where worth, I thought they where junk
According to Wikipedia, there isn't a "rare" spot. They are technically labeled Uncommon 1 (U1), Uncommon 2 (U2), Common 1 (C1), and Common 2 (C2). Maze of Ith is labeled C1, but every other common is C2. As for U1 vs. U2, I didn't see which was U1 and which was U2, but I think they're scattered throughout the pack, not in any particular order. Cool vids. Keep 'em coming! ^_^
this is super sweet. I was kinda bummed when i got home from a draft of my cube that only 4 people in total showed up to :\. but this is really sweet, ive always wondered what kind of stuff was in this set.
that mana vortex is nasty, no idea what its worth but personally i would put it in my zur edh deck. i had one but someone used take possession and just took it with them when the game was over., sad face. zur with mana breach, mana vortex, copy the mana breach. i loved having the most obnoxious deck on the table.
That pack with blood moon had two rares in it. Worms of the earth is also a rare. Either there was a real problem with packaging back then or just got really lucky. Cuz I don't think I saw a rare in the first pack of the video either
Oh in case you didn't get a chance to look up the possible elf misprint- that's actually how the card should look. It does look strange, though.

That Gaea's Touch at 19:04 !! the text is super off center!

This brings back memories. The Dark was the first set that I ever bought a complete box of....many years ago :)
Damn you just brought back ALOT of memories. I just started back on a couple months ago. Great cards you picked up! I must've had a majority of those. Can't wait to see whats in store for the future! Thanks!
That Gaea's Touch around 19:04 has a really nice text and mana symbol misalignment going on :D
You always seem to have really good luck with the boxes. Hope you'll keep doing openings!
Thank you so much for the video. Definitely the craziest maze of ith pulls I've ever seen. Keep doing what you're doing man.
Preacher is my favorite card out of this set. All the jokes that are made with it and its just a weird card.
I'd be interested in that too. Both sets have fantastic, iconic cards and they're not even that expensive compared to stuff he's already done. Champions boxes are only like $300+ ish and Betrayers are like $250 ish.

Thanks for this opening! Happy Halloween! And thank you to MTGCardMarket, I'll certainly be giving them by business when I'm looking for more cards. :D
season of the witch has great artwork
I was TERRIFIED of The Fallen when I was young. That card just gave me nightmares lol. Ravenous Vampire too. ;_;
Hi, I really like your videos and I was wondering what you do with your opened booster wrapping ? I'm asking cuz I happen to collect them and if you are throwing them away I would like to see with you if we could find a way that I could get my hands on them.
thanks !
Holy crap, you did it. You opened the box of "The Dark"...This was one of the first expansions i started playing in.
You got me back in to magic heavily. I've bought 4 booster boxes in the past month.
are misprints worth anything because i have a vampire night hawk and a few others misprinted
Awesome video, i didnt start back in the dark but through edh got to learn about/appreciate the game from where it started to where it is today. I could only dream of opening/owning alot of these older cards was fun to watch :D

Amazing to see this old stuff being opened.
did you keep any wrappers from alpha through revised? and arabian nights through legends?
Great videos you got here. You've earned a new subscriber. On a random note when I was 9 years old I got my first packs of Magic cards which were from Torment. War barge and merfolk assassin was a fun little combo I remember playing on a friend
i have seen a few of your vids and i keep hearing about the back card in packs being bent. could it be from the way you are opening them? seems like the back card gets bent the same way no matter what set you are opening. Just a thought. Keep the vids coming, gets me through work!
Is it possible to get the 2 "Eater of the Dead" and the 2 "Wand of Ith"?
Thanks for the "spooky" Halloween opening! Halloween's my birthday and you just made it twice as awesome!
the gark was u1 , u2 , c1 ,c4 type rarity
i think maze of ith was c1
that is why maze show ups in common slots
first two are your uncommons , next six are commons
and for those that dont know what c1 and u2 means

"Mint Blood Moon".
Actually, we can see the cards are less than near-mint, even straight from the pack. Still, awesome to be able to open them.
Great opening, The Tormod's Crypt Reprint in M13 was so random in my opinion, but nice to see one of my favorites in a modern frame.
Hi, i like to start playing magic what should I buy first?
i like to start with "white"
If you're playing modern i'd recommend the event deck "March of the Multitudes." Also, check out Tolarian Community College for videos to help with those things.
Got so excited for this video. Love the dark. One of my favourite sets.
Love to watch this. Amazing how things have changed. only a $8000 box now, LOL
Would you ever do the other sets in the Kamigawa block?
i love how the cards that have Tap effects has a sideways T telling you to tap, them good ole times
Also, I paid about $500 for my box of the Dark about a uear ago. I sold the packs for $11 plus shipping on eBay. Kept ten packs for myself and pulled that one Maze of Ith.
how much does a booster box cost ive never gotten one before
I played before the dark came out. I remember when revised came out I was happy cause I could get some good cards for cheap... Wish I had those old cards now!
it was a totally different game back then but so fun!
This was the first expansion that released after I started playing--Legends and Revised were the sets on offer when I started, though Legends was $5 a pack and limit one per customer at the local shop. Crazy times.

really glad to have ya!!
I started magic the week these came out and the art and design really were amazing even if we didn't realize the cards weren't that powerful.
I started playing just as The Dark was coming out and I've been playing off and on ever since.
so crazy watchin you open them.. man i got them packs for like 1$ when i was a kid so crazy
how much was the total price before u got the deal?
What do you want for safe haven?
Dude, will you open the new commander? I'm running a little low on money so I won't be able to get them for a while.
Lovely video yet again Jeremy, and i gotta say The Dark is one of my favorite sets, and Maze of Ith one of my favorite card in mtg. This got me so excited to see, Thanks man

Please review the new commander decks! I can't decide which one to get!
Wow I remember I had some of those cards! :) Thanks for an awesome video
So cool! Thanks MTG Card Market!!!
when did you open alpha? video?
Sad thing is I can buy the entire set of The Dark for like 100 bucks on Tcgplayer and a booster box costs 600
wow, I'm surprised you didn't get a frankensteins monster in that box, he wa as a a,chase card as well when the dark first came, seeing that I started playing about a year after the dark was released, all I wanted was that card, I bought so many packs, I must of pulled at least 10 maze if ith, 3 blood moons and 2 ball lighting and never pulled one, did I also mention that I was a new player at the time and I had no idea what those other cards where worth, I thought they where junk

Cool vids. Keep 'em coming! ^_^
14:14 You read it as fisting... priceless.
How could you remember some of those cards from Revised when Revised predates the Dark...?
you passed a goblin wizard and he is also $10
I dont think there is an order to the cards, because I checked some of the cards on the first slot and they werent rares...
not sure now lol hmm maybe its random :P as I looked and most of the rates are the second card
Is there any format where ANY card of ANY block can be played?
Franco De Rose Vintage i believe,
+Franco De Rose Sure, casual
Rob Millington i didnt know casual was a format xD, ty
+Franco De Rose Vintage you can play pretty much any card, although some are restricted to being only able to play one
Commander
this is super sweet. I was kinda bummed when i got home from a draft of my cube that only 4 people in total showed up to :\. but this is really sweet, ive always wondered what kind of stuff was in this set.
will you be opening the new Commander decks?
No Frankenstein's Monster. That card has some of the best art in the set imo. Too bad. Nice Maze pulls though.
If I remember correctly, wasn't this set similar to Fallen Empires with no actual rares? I'm pretty sure all the uncommons had a U1 or U2 rarity.
do you trade off any of that stuff or what?
that mana vortex is nasty, no idea what its worth but personally i would put it in my zur edh deck. i had one but someone used take possession and just took it with them when the game was over., sad face. zur with mana breach, mana vortex, copy the mana breach. i loved having the most obnoxious deck on the table.
I remember that scavenging folk card from when i was a kid!
That pack with blood moon had two rares in it. Worms of the earth is also a rare. Either there was a real problem with packaging back then or just got really lucky. Cuz I don't think I saw a rare in the first pack of the video either
how do u get sponsors for cards
OH Wow you pulled DOUBLE rares in that Blood moon pack :D Just checked as Worms of the Earth is also a rare.
that rares looks like randomly placed coz city of shadow is rare too
yup :)
i would really like to have a runesword im trying to get one of each sword printed in magic.
love the Dark diabolic and weird art
I still own like half of these cards. They're all wrapped up in rubber bands in shoe boxes. I started in beta and stopped playing in mirage.
D: What was the funny surprise Halloween (non mtg related) thing they also sent???
A box of old ravnica city of guild would be great. Entertaining trough whole video gj
im embarrassed to say i didnt even know a set called the dark existed gunna be fun to see what cards i know came from this set
the second card is the rare but sometimes you don't get one. i've checked around half the packs for you on tcgplayer.
The dark boosters, 11.99 at Cape Fear Games. I'm lucky that I am right around the corner and all the people who work there are awesome.
awesome idea, yeah he should totally do that :D
Not a misprint on the savaen elves... :(
in the blood moon pack you got a worms of the earth too that is also a rare ^^
how much is maze of ith worth?
I opened one pack and got Maze of Ith... it is now (on the high end) worth about 70$....if IT isn't worth as much please let me know....
+sLiNkY Maze of ith is worth $20, it has never been worth even close to $70
Rob Millington One a sight i saw them selling from 14$ TO 80$ !!! on one website ! im sorry that i have a life .
maybe they were listed at $80, but they were not selling for that much, sorry
Rob Millington Yeah , I know that now.
I don't see it!
Also, not a misprint, all Savaen elves are printed that way (p.s. you opened others before that one ;) )
Sisters of the flame looks like devil in ms. jones...lol
There are no rares in this set, only uncommon and commons. I bought 5 boosters last week, and I pulled a Maze of Ith twice. Blew my freakin' mind.
You should put away 1 booster back from every box you open then open them all when you get to 100 packs.
16:05 Wormwood Treefolk!
i was playing when this set was released...... sigh i feel old.
I love your videos but, could you please look up where the uncommon ans rares are before then video???
ahh! Fire Drake! That was my favourite card art growing up
