Rivals and player characters in Pokemon are some of the most important characters in all of the games. From Red and Blue, to Hop, Bede, and Marnie, we have seen many protagonists and rivals throughout all the main series Pokemon games, and in today's video, I'm going to be covering a super interesting fact about every single one of them! Why does no one every talk about Hop's name? So many people still laugh about it since they don't know the meanings behind it. He's named after a plant that has significance in the UK beer brewing industry. But more importantly, it's one of the fastest growing plants in the world "Hop shoots grow very rapidly, and at the peak of growth can grow 20 to 50 centimetres (8 to 20 in) per week." I think that's ment to represent Hop's growth throughout the game and one of the most wildly vary teams ending up with you fighting against a legendary in his final team.
What?! I must have not been paying attention to the trailer for the expansion pass since I had no idea what the characters you encounter in the train station in Wedgehurst were named at first I thought that they might be gym leaders that were version exclusive but now that I know that they are just version exclusive rivals make sense to me. So, im very thankful for your videos clarifing something so simple to rememeber.
Actually, green's team in let's go all evolving with stones is a reference to her title from the manga, where she's known as "The Evolver"

The Silver and Gladion similarities are made funnier when one considers that a possible etymology of Silvally is 'Silver Buddy'

Also gladius means means blade/sword in latin, which is a weapon who's dangerous part is made in metal (and silver is a metal, so...)
fun fact, four out of the five rivals introduced in Sword and Shield counter someone else within that group.
Bede is fairy, which counters Marnie's dark type, which counters Avery's Psychic, who counters Klara's poison, which finally counters Bede. I think that's pretty neat.

In a sense, they make up an elite 4 for the player, in which Hop could be considered the "champion" of them, since he isn't necessarily countered by any of them

Another detail about Hop that i like is that when choosing his Starter he chooses the Pokemon that is strong against Leon's Starter which if you ask me is a pretty good longterm strategy on Hop's behalf considering his original goal to become champion.

@Koba true, in the first moments of choosing the starter that's pretty much a given because they always give the player first dibs in every game.
It just so happens to be a plot convenience that Hop's Starter is able to defeat Leon's Starter especially if you choose Grookey because the Sobble line can take out Leon's Charzard AND Cinderace
But i suppose if I liked to overthink the slight stroke of genius from a writing standpoint
Hop picks before Leon....and wouldn't really know beforehand if Leon would have actually used the remaining starter. Hop isn't a secret strategic genius he just lucks out with the type advantage.
Bede is actually pronounced like “bayd” and means “angel”. Which makes it interesting how he becomes a fairy specialist

And going off of the Gen 5 part. The name Whitley that was said to be one of Hilda's scrapped names was brought back in the Manga for Rosa's manga name.
Like the original Black and White versions, why don’t every Pokémon game have 2 rivals that travel with you to choose your Starter Pokémon?

Pokemon SwSh gives us closure too! When you pick your starter, Hop chooses the type weak to to while Leon keeps the type stronger to it. I remember when I first realized that this was the case, I started planning what my actual team against the Champion would be xD

Gamefreak sure loves gen 1. 😅 You can travel to the Kanto region in Gold and Silver, there are remakes of the games in gen 3, you can travel to the Kanto region in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, gen 5 is a reboot of gen 1, with the characters resembling red with his signature hat facing forward, gen 7 has a Kanto gym themed building, and even has characters from the region, as well as references and Alolan Pokemon from gen 1, and there's even a second gen 1 remake, which is a remake of Pokemon yellow, in a sense, with both characters even resembling Hilbert and Hilda from Black and White, which is essentially a modern red and blue. They will definitely make sure we never forget about the games that started it all. 😂
(P.S, gen 5 is my favorite gen. Best music, best 2d graphics, best scenery, best story, etc.)

13:19 Subtle romance? Serena's was a blunt as a speeding freight train to the face, and Ash's was practically nonexistent. Also there was no situational reason for Pikachu to zap Serena. Misty, May, and Dawn's bike, and Iris were all collateral damage from a battle or other situation where Pikachu unleashed an electric attack. As for Bonnie she accidently over annoyed Pikachu and he lashed out in defense. (Similar to the opening of Johto episode A Bout with Sprout.)
Prety sure Iris, Bonnie, and Mallow were the only female companions that didn't have a crush on Ash, I'm still not sure about Gou

@@SupermarketSweep777 they definitely did, May's was more brief and subtle but had it's movements, Dawn was a bit less subtle as she got teased about it a few times and a boy that liked her got jealous and challenged the oblivious Ash to a battle for her love, just like what happened to Misty in the orange league

I don't know If i am the only one that sees It, but for me, Hop's name and the spiky parts of his hair are pretty inspired by the plant Hop (you know, the one used to make beer?). His hair looks a Lot like this plant upside down!

Actually, Gladions first pokemon is an Eevee I believe, which he elvoled into an Umbreon. Though, it may have a Rockruff because of his Lycanrock, though in one of the flashbacks it shows him with an Eevee.
I'm pretty sure Selene is pronounced sel-lee-nee like the Greek word for the moon.

And I don't see Gladion as a rival since he is never trying to achieve the same goals as you in the game except for the times you work together.
The name is Elio but it is based on the name Helios
Helios is the name of the sun in greek mythology which is where the prefix comes from. The English equivalent would be Elio

I think they have more variety, but not necessarily better designs. Like Wallace? Easily prettier and a way more interesting silhouette then a lot of the female characters
My favorites are May's Ruby/Sapphire look, Dawn's Diamond/Pearl look (particularly in the anime with her much more vividly blue hair), and Serena's.

One thing that I would’ve liked you to include, that Iris from Unova looks awfully like Hop and Leon. (Maybe sister or cousin!)
Another small detail is Hop is a trainer that does not seem that strong because he often loses to you but you are insanely powerful, Hop is actually insanely strong. So a character that seams weak but is actually very strong, sound familiar. Now look at his jacket. Blue with white puffs at the top. Kinda like everybody’s favorite pun loving skeleton from Snowdin! I think that it should be noted that Leaf and Green are not the same characters. They certainly look alike but that is because Green is the manga version of Leaf. In Let's Go, Greens's habit of using Pokeballs in strange ways is also referenced when she throws three Pokeballs at you in Cerulean Cave.

Hops hair design also looks like such of an acorn aswell as a crown! Which could be a reference to him becoming a professor! Since most professors names relate to trees. And acorns being a new sprout or a seed to certain trees. Hes a beginner, so hes a seed, an acorn that will grow up to be a tree! His name also relates to trees, this was mentioned in a certain video I've forgotten alot about, but I know his name either is the name of a tree, or translates to a type of tree in some languages.

No, Leaf is the FR/LG protagonist while Green is the manga character who also is in the Let's Go games. Green never appears in anything outside of mangas and the Let's Go games as of now. Leaf is commonly portrayed as the counterpart to Red while Green is not.

You have to be kidding about Victor's official number. I largely stayed away from Sword and Shield during their promotional period and initial release so I really didn't know much about either. When I got to where you register for the gym challenge I was trying to think of a good number. I decided to use the release date of my first Pokemon game which was Pokemon Blue which means I chose 227. Crazy how things like that can happen.

I'm German and you're wrong. Hilda and Hilbert are German Names but it doesn't mean Battle. Battle in German means "Kampf" what doesn't sound like Hilda or Hilbert at all. You probably mean a other language.
Also, Bedes German Name is Betys, and he kinda looks like a girl so I thought that he was actually a her and his Name was a Reference to the englisch Name Betty.
