Her face was more detailed in Rise because they used a face capture tech called MOVA. Her skin details, the facial expressions etc were realistic. But there was an issue about MOVA's ownership or something like that, saying it was stolen or illegally used whatsoever by companies. So now, they need to ditch that wonderful tech. Lara's still looking awesome here in shadow tho

I'm playing Shadow right now and Laura looks plastic with her hair being made from about 4 polygons and cataracts for eyes. the lighting is nice but bright sunlight makes too much bright pastel lighting flair. The game play is good though, with the ability to turn off all puzzle and searching help and tweak the difficulty balance to taste - feels like a true adventure and exploration game.
personal preference i guess. i dont like how they gave her a smaller, almost pouting mouth in shadow. also her eyes are more squint y and her face is a little too round for me
Shadow has the best shadow, lighting, and post fx work this generation. Plus, the jungle environment is more complex, and the environments are mire colorful. There's some instances where I felt like I was in a big budget CG film.
That's funny because she has absolutely no facial animations or they're really janky during in-game dialogue outside of the cutscenes, in Rise compared to Shadow where she has quite good animations in every case.
I would like to point out that you actually did not have rise maxed out, you were missing VXAO. While most people seem to agree that its visual benefit is pretty small, especially considering the big performance hit, I think it actually helps fix one of the biggest issues I have with the graphics in the game, which is the way lighting just looks too flat and fake compared to a lot of other games. It is often a subtle effect, especially outdoors, but in a lot of indoor areas it helps provide more contrast to the lighting in a very natural looking way, which is something both games desperately need. This problem is even bigger in shadow, where things seem to be lit indirectly more often than not. I'm a little disappointed by the lack of the feature in Shadow, though I do understand why it wasn't included as nobody seemed to care for it with the performance cost it had in rise. I do think it would have helped with this issue of indirect lighting just looking too flat though. While the ray traced shadows in shadow of the tomb raider do look pretty good, I really don't think they are what ray tracing in the game should have been used for. I think the global illumination system from metro exodus would have benefited the game much more by adding this natural contrast to the lighting. Shadows were already such a big focus from these developers that the benefits are just hard to see with ray tracing, but I think the impact from global illumination would be very noticeable.
How is the definitive edition of the tomb raider (2013) compared to the original? I think lara looks slightly expressionless in the definitive edition.
Lara looks relatively the same face wise in Shadow. They just gave her more of a sharper jawline making her look even more like her motion capture actress. It works for me because it makes her look older, like she's 25 in Rise and like 30-31 in Shadow.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is Incredible with the Environmental Graphics! The Lighting and Details in SOTTR are just INSANE! I just Love the Graphics in SOTTR. The story is also incredible. Both Games are a Big W. ROTTR was incredible in itself but SOTTR takes it to another level. Great work by the Devs
Rise of The Tomb Raider always had that “PS3/Xbox 360” feeling, probably due to the AA being poor. But the lighting etc reminded me of that era so much. I know the devs said that Rise wasn’t held back by the Xbox 360 at all, but so many of Rise’s graphical shortcomings (even on PC) were things the 360 handled badly (AA, Complex Lighting, Shadows, # of NPC’s, Reflections/Water Effects. Tomb Raider 2013 & Shadow are beautiful games for their time. Rise just reminds me of an Xbox 360 game with uncompressed textures and a higher res & frame rate.
“Lara has a new outfit this time around with her character starting to match up more closely to the original Lara Croft character design from the 90s, and she...” “Fantastic! How’s the rack? “ me in master rochi’s voice.
Great comparison, also of note: Since the preferred API this go 'round is DX12 (compared to a patch) , the overall experience seems to be more fluid as a result.
I think ROTTR has one of the best graphics of last few years and I'm sure SOTTR is good but it's, like, more plastic? It's look like they removed some of the details, especially on her face. And in ROTTR everything was more realistic but SOTTR absolutely look like a game, I hope you understand 😅 well whatever, I care more about gameplay and the story sooo...
This is fantastic, how did I not find your channel sooner? I think there is a softness on SoTR that makes Laura feel less defined at distance, but close up it does overall look like improvements were made. I completely understand the AA issue you're talking about in RoTR, eventually I just tried to tune it out. Thanks for making this comparison video. Very excited for the 12th now :D
Hmm? Most of comments here says that her face looks different compare to Rise. But from my perspective, she looks just the same, either in Shadow or Rise. Especially in cut-scenes or when you access the skills window at base camp (you can view her face closely there).
Mostly everything except some minor things look a lot better in Shadow.. except I don't know how I feel about Lara's model yet. Like most others here, I liked her face more in Rise and she actually seemed more detailed in Rise (clothing and whatnot), but I do like that they made her more muscular in Shadow. Overall, I'm pleased with the visuals.
for people complaining about her face and body. It is obvious that there is an attempt to de-sexualize Lara as she looks more like what an attractive 20 year old would look like instead of an anorexic GQ model with a boob implant. To be fair, someone that is constantly body building by climbing rocks and running around and lifting heavy stuff would probably be built a bit puffier than a starving model. she is not fat by any means, look at her hips and legs for example. just buffed up ! Also another thing to consider is that now a days in the new TR games they use real life actresses and actors with motion detection suits. it is possible that Lara's face is closely resembled to the actress playing her.
Lara's character has more muscle and fat in this series which I love. I found it quite difficult doing the puzzles in this game as the environmental textures were completely different from the previous game. I am a big fan of the latest game
The sound effects sound much better in Rise compared to Shadow minus the explosion noise which sounds better in shadow. When Lara is firing her shotgun and hand gun in Rise, you can hear the shell casings hit the ground. You can't hear that in Shadow mind you it might be because of the environment (she's standing on softer ground in Shadow. Maybe doing a firing test on solid ground would've been more proper for the comparison?). The sound effects of the arrow sound better in Rise as well. You can hear the whizzing noise it makes when she shoots it and the sound it makes when it hits the wall sound much better. In Shadow you don't hear that noise and the impact sound is like a dull thud.
Lara's Character Model was at her peak in Rise Of the Tomb Raider. I still think she's adorable in Shadow. but they should of just left the Character model alone.
People are saying Lara is more beautiful in Rise but in Shadow in every cutscene and even when Lara talks to side quest characters her facial expressions and lip syncing is drastically better and more expressive. She has much more body language and personality in Shadow. She might not be as pretty and I realize thats what a lot of Tomb Raider fans love about the franchise, but I feel her expressiveness makes up for it. Shes still pretty in Shadow, Lara almost always is. One thing I can say is worse in Shadow is her hair. It has much less detail and character. It doesnt sway underwater and Lara doesnt do little things like squeeze the water out of her ponytail after swimming in Shadow. But imo thats the only downgrade in Laras model compared to Rise.
Have you tested if it performs similarly in DX11? There seems to be some confusing info about it in the performance tests. Overall, this is a nice comparison, it seems that although some features are objectively better in SotTR, I still like some graphic effects and sounds from RotTR subjectively more. I also noticed you didn't enable VXAO and didn't show any interiors, where RotTR and VXAO really shine the most.
The biggest problem I have with SoTTR is that they beefed up her arms...without changing the rest of her body proportion to fit it, making it feels genuine like she gone to the gym and worked out her arms ONLY! Without training any other body parts, so she looks muscular but not in a good way. They should've studied some fitness model body types better.
Her hair has had an extreme down grade if you ask me. The flow of her hair in rise is so amazing, it has me obsessed. But her hair in shadow is stiff with barley ANY movement. I love running around in rise just looking at her hair flow so nicely. But in shadow it’s as stiff as a stick. It kind of ruined some of the experience for me. But the environment is nicer in shadow. I have played both from start to finish, and I personally like rise most.
Lots of things are context related as for smoke, grass movement and fire haze. These things will be more present in RotTR because the area is in the valley of a huge mountain range, so it's colder, more open and windier. In Shadow, it's in the middle of a hot humid forest so there will be no wind and fire won't be as impacting on the warm location. Same goes for sound as the Geothermal Valley is a wide open area surrounded by cliffs so the reverb and echo will be higher compared to a dense tree-filled jungle. Still interesting stuff though!
Weapons sound better in Rise, but Shadow has better explosion sounds. BUT! Dude, you completely missed to most important comparison: animation quality, e.g. idle animations. In RoTR Lara behaves almost lifelike, while in SoTR much to my astonishment, she’s very much static, like a puppet doll... that was such a downgrade compared to RoTR.
I've got both games on Xbox and as amazing as rise of the tomb raider looks, shadow of the tomb raider is just plain damn awesome with its stunning graphics!
I just beat ROTTR last week for the 1st time. I bought the game when it first came out in 2015 but did not finish it and traded it in. I re bought the game with a xbox X and 4k tv and honestly i can say this game is one of the best looking games i have ever seen.
@@anthonyking9495 Well to be honest, about three months due to work. I also like to 100% the game and not just run through it. I searched every nook and cranny before completing the game. I beat the game but im only 97% done. Just need a couple documents. I also downloaded the dlc. I beat lara's nightmare but not baba yaga. Once i beat that, its off to SoTTR
Unpopular opinion...I enjoyed Shadow of the Tomb Raider way better...story was beautiful... Rise is like playing COD which lacks the exploration effect which I very much enjoyed when playing Shadow...
Looking in the comments and I gotta say: she's not here to look pretty, the sexualization of Lara was something the creator massively disagreed with. Those people who keep saying they like the prettier face of rise better (and those who straight up made her a different face in a mod) are basically saying they don't want her to look so human. And she does look human, one of the first things I noticed about her newer face was that it looked like she had some bags under her eyes (which she has more than earned) and that she didn't appear to have super thick lower lashes which made her look like she was wearing eyeliner. Yes, she was gorgeous in the first one and in rise, but she's not y'alls fucking pinup. Let a girl stealth kill a bitch in peace, fuck
Personally I don't care about her face that much. Her ass is what's really important, that's what you're looking at most of the time as you play anyway. And I think the devs agree because it looks a bit more plump and round in Shadow, a very nice touch. However I must say it's disappointing that they covered her cleavage up with most of the outfits in Shadow, that was the best part of her character in the previous 2 games. Ah well, can always just go look at the endless supply of animated porn being made of her online. Seriously though if the creator's intention was to avoid sexualizing her they failed completely, probably underestimated how pervy the male sex can be.
Nick Camacho I don't really mind that, since in Rise i only used outfits that would keep her warm. Still, in Shadow doesn't seem to be too cold, she could at least have the default outift from 2013 version. Still, her body, or ass, looks much better now. And that's most important thing, as you said, since you spend all the time looking at her back. What do you mean with "how pervy the male man can be"? Lol. Females are as perv as men, even worse than men. And that's fine, because it's natural. Also, Lara In Trouble is a fucking masterpiece.
Aside from what it's said in the video, gameplay-wise both games are great. Rise has a better and more interesting storyline. Shadows' storyline is a convoluted mess that i dont even know what the hell was happening at that game. But Shadows' Crypts, Tombs and puzzle in general were more elaborated. In Rise they were TOO much simple and easy
For its time, rise of the tomb raider defiantly brought more new tech to the table and shadow seems to refine it and adjust it with a few newer things, shadow seems much better optimized. I like the sounds in Rise especially for the guns but the ambient noise is better in shadow.
Is it just me or do her clothes, equipment, face/hair, etc look more detailed in rise?
lol I thought I was the only one
Her face was more detailed in Rise because they used a face capture tech called MOVA. Her skin details, the facial expressions etc were realistic. But there was an issue about MOVA's ownership or something like that, saying it was stolen or illegally used whatsoever by companies. So now, they need to ditch that wonderful tech. Sorry to break it to you but pretty girls exist in real life too. Just because you’re probably ugly doesn’t mean everyone else is too.
Rise does look more cinematic. I cant wait to play Shadow though!
Shadow: better environment
Rise: better character model
She looks better in Rise of the Tomb Raider 0:23
Guess I’m the odd one out cause she looks 10x better in Shadow compared to Rise, first thing I noticed was her face looked much more appealing
personal preference i guess. i dont like how they gave her a smaller, almost pouting mouth in shadow. also her eyes are more squint y and her face is a little too round for me
The Lara from Rise looked better in my opinion . (But also in both games you cannot see the arrow going through the air .)
You mean the arrow?? Not the bow.
@@redrooster8075 oh yes. you're right . my bad.
Shadow has the best shadow, lighting, and post fx work this generation. Plus, the jungle environment is more complex, and the environments are mire colorful. There's some instances where I felt like I was in a big budget CG film.
Skin textures and facial animations are better in Rise!
That's funny because she has absolutely no facial animations or they're really janky during in-game dialogue outside of the cutscenes, in Rise compared to Shadow where she has quite good animations in every case.
Rise of the tomb raider best graphics for me
Looks like its down to personal perception but this new game looks more cartoony to me. It must be lower quality as it performs better.
@@lllCANDYMAANlll Yes, the New Lara looks cartony
Yes but colors are now stronger which is better for me
yeah, for you. not for all
I would like to point out that you actually did not have rise maxed out, you were missing VXAO.
Her hair in shadow looks so clean that it doesn't feel right. I like the old somewhat messy cause she explores around.
i agree the animations and scenerys were amazing in shadow🤩🤩🤩 i feel like each game is amazing in its own way
Lara looks relatively the same face wise in Shadow. They just gave her more of a sharper jawline making her look even more like her motion capture actress. It works for me because it makes her look older, like she's 25 in Rise and like 30-31 in Shadow.
She's 27 in Shadow actually.
I think Rise had a better overall story but Shadow’s Lara was a better character; her downfall into a legit murderer was really interesting to see.
Damn I really love the color in Shadow, I haven't played it yet but I think it would be fun to just run around looking at the environments
“Lara has a new outfit this time around with her character starting to match up more closely to the original Lara Croft character design from the 90s, and she...”
“Fantastic! How’s the rack? “ me in master rochi’s voice.
The new face looks awful, it reminds me trinity from matrix, i think, Lara Croft tomb raider 2013 looks better.
The hottest she ever was
Yes, she looked so much better.
I like her better in rise for me
@@BoraniumArt i dont like her face as the game progresses well she looks pretty when shes on the ship in the beginning
Great comparison, also of note: Since the preferred API this go 'round is DX12 (compared to a patch) , the overall experience seems to be more fluid as a result.
shadow of the tomb raider with HDR is out of this world though, specially when you're in the amazons
Zeynep Sude It looks way more cartoony now.
@@kraenk12 yes definitely
"sure it does"
Maybe it's because ROTTR ran like shit even in high end pcs.
ran fine in 4k maxed out on my pc
I find Shadow a lot more optimized. It seams to run smoother and with lower temps on the same machine. Mine is just 3rd gen i5 with 8GB and RX 570.
rise of the tomb raider color looks nature while the shadow of tomb raider color looks yellowish just like cartoon.
That's only her skin texture in game and not cutscenes in some areas. It's better in some areas like San Juan and the oil field
I must be the only one that likes her face in Shadow better.
I never really saw a difference with her face between both Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I love both games!
lgbtq face PASS
This is fantastic, how did I not find your channel sooner? I think there is a softness on SoTR that makes Laura feel less defined at distance, but close up it does overall look like improvements were made. I completely understand the AA issue you're talking about in RoTR, eventually I just tried to tune it out.
Thanks for making this comparison video. Very excited for the 12th now :D
Im sneaky that way :P
"More realistic facial design" = made chubbier than someone capable of those sorts of acrobatic feats would be....
probably an SJW got involved
That's what I thought haha
1:56 if you look at it Shadow Lara Croft looks a little more chubby.
Maybe her face looks chubby because she’s older
Chubby? Lmao, no wonder women everywhere have low self-esteem if that's what people like you call a face like that chubby
Hmm? Most of comments here says that her face looks different compare to Rise. But from my perspective, she looks just the same, either in Shadow or Rise. Especially in cut-scenes or when you access the skills window at base camp (you can view her face closely there).
Lara's new face seems really tired and stressed. Poor Lara.
Maybe because she is more stressed and tired...and older?
Willy Anugrah Cahyadi did you play shadow? She is nissing her parent while jonah mad at her.
27 isn't "older" she is a 27 year old young woman.
6:30 that shotgun sound is awfully familiar sounding, can't make out where i've heard it before.
Warzone or gta for me 😂
i cant stop watching at her in rise man damn so beautiful
Rise is much better in terms of both graphic, game play, and her look.
Graphics? Did you see the shimmer?
@@cigonasesu yeah the shimmer that happens in rise looks terrible.
You're just silly mate shadow of the tomb raider is a step up in every way
@@Marcel-ne1ew except for Lara's look, the rest goes for shadow.
Her new face looks tired.
Your genes are tired
its hard to be archeologist tho
isn't she tired for almost 24 years now lol
Completly! In Rise she was so much interesting and focus.
Maybe because she has been through more then u will ever be through...
So many people say they dont like her new face and thats fine but i like her new face because her face looks more realistic now.
I liked Lara's face the most in 2013 basic (non-definitive edition) game for some reason.
Best story too
Yes, that was my favorite face too. Then they kept making it worse every iteration.
The character model in Rise is so much better.
Rise is better in every way. Shadow was a massive dissapointment
I just realize i play Shadow first then Rise
I was like. Why this look like a downgrade, no underwater chest, no mud warpaint, and the graphic worst
Lara's Character Model was at her peak in Rise Of the Tomb Raider. I still think she's adorable in Shadow. but they should of just left the Character model alone.
They did man. It's the exact same model. The lighting, shading and hair are different though.
But imo thats the only downgrade in Laras model compared to Rise.
shadow is definitely better environmentally, lighting, shadows etc. something about lara in rise just makes her look better to me. idk
I mean the outfit in this video for Shadow is one of the worst looking outfits in the game. I personally found Lara to look better overall in Shadow.
This sounds weird but every time I looked at her head it look larger. Also her hair did not move well underwater.
its her face shape, she has a square face which a lot of women have
Have you tested if it performs similarly in DX11? There seems to be some confusing info about it in the performance tests.
Overall, this is a nice comparison, it seems that although some features are objectively better in SotTR, I still like some graphic effects and sounds from RotTR subjectively more.
I also noticed you didn't enable VXAO and didn't show any interiors, where RotTR and VXAO really shine the most.
Face looks so much more detailed in Shadow of the Tomb Raider
The best Lara face is from the previous trilogy, Anniversary, Legend and Underworld.
Yes, the real Lara is gone.
She looked more like an alien than a person tho
She looked like an alien . Or Lana Parilla… or both together.
Love how Nick930 making comparison videos, not just talking about fps fps and fps
Sound of explosions is amazing in shadow
I've got both games on Xbox and as amazing as rise of the tomb raider looks, shadow of the tomb raider is just plain damn awesome with its stunning graphics!
Wtf
I like Shadow because in Rise it takes so much time to upgrade the weapons and have to do so many nonsense side missions
I just beat ROTTR last week for the 1st time. I bought the game when it first came out in 2015 but did not finish it and traded it in. I re bought the game with a xbox X and 4k tv and honestly i can say this game is one of the best looking games i have ever seen.
I'm currently working on rottr. How long did it took you to beat it?
@@anthonyking9495 Well to be honest, about three months due to work. I also like to 100% the game and not just run through it. I searched every nook and cranny before completing the game. I beat the game but im only 97% done. Just need a couple documents. I also downloaded the dlc. I beat lara's nightmare but not baba yaga. Once i beat that, its off to SoTTR
@@7gquake nice I'm doing the same. Trying anyway. Kinda takes the fun away to just blast through the story
Unpopular opinion...I enjoyed Shadow of the Tomb Raider way better...story was beautiful...
Rise is like playing COD which lacks the exploration effect which I very much enjoyed when playing Shadow...
Rise Of The Tomb Raider is better,i love it,and I've already Completed the game .
Shut up
@John Doe ORANGE MAN BAD
Thank you so much, I was just about to write the same.
Also, Lara In Trouble is a fucking masterpiece.
the faces look dead on Shadow's cut-scenes...they look better in Rise.
