I'm 27 now and this video made me realize all the hurt I've gone through in life is karma for locking the butler from tomb raider in the freezer years ago
"unfortunately these types of videos dont seem to attract as many viewers as usually" 2.5mio views later. never underestimate the amount of tomb raider fans lurking on the internet :)
its not about being a fan or not. its just the original tomb raider is a part of our childhood. its hard to miss anything that celebrate a part of our life :D
I agree this is a very nice walk down memory lane! And yep theres a lot of us Tomb Raider fans lurkin haha to the point i have now found you and subbed :)
I'm of the age that this could have been one of the games I played, but was always more into the sports games. Obviously know of it and did play with friends some, but found this video today to watch with my 11 year old as they have Lara Croft skins on Fortnite now. This video was well done.
DUDE, seriously, this is the third time im watching this video in it's entirety. It takes me through every nostalgia packed game and Nick is a wonderful narrator, i love this vid
Tomb Raider II was my first Playstation game! It was so hard back then, my dad ended up getting the guide book and we would stay up late working our way through the game together.
do you mean the sound when the last GPS cache is found? i was thinking more about the whole track from tr1, the one from the start of your video. It could be a menu option to play with the classic soundtrack, it would make old farts like me take yet another walkthrough ;)
I never thought about it. The black sky seemed to enhance the feeling of a lost location more than a blue sky would. For me, the feeling of isolation in a game has never been equaled.
I’m 35 and I’m still getting goosebumps watching this beautiful documentary and listening to the signature classic soundtrack ❤️❤️ it will always be my all time most favorite game ever!
I was about 36 when i first used a games console - Resident Evil 1 was my first game & Tomb Raider 1 followed by TR 2 & 3 ( with a good few other games in between) I stopped playing games not long after after i'd played TR The Last Revelation & Chronicles. I haven't been on any game console for roughly 20 years until around 4 months back when, i got a PS2 off ebay. And the first 3 games i played were TR 1 2 & 3 . I got the console specifically to re - do the first games i did back in the late 90s. ( Though, my Thumb had to get used to the battering from the D-Pad again) I'm now about 2 levels from completing TR Anniversary which is a good tribute to the first game but, the music in the original is a lot better than the Anniversary. Brilliant games series.
Really miss how the past games were all about exploring lots of countries and solving puzzles, the more recent games have been stuck in 1 place and are all about her surviving in the jungle and shooting arrows. Miss the dual pistols and globe trotting big time :( Edit: also I miss having the mansion with all the little secrets to explore in each game!! The new ones are still amazing for fighting, the plots are really interesting and of course the graphics are beautiful! But I do miss the essence of the older games (underworld and previous)
oml if you actually played all 3 reboots you would be happy with all the challenge tombs they put in for everyone like you. More challenge tombs in rise and shadow. ALOT IN SHADOW.
Jay Elex it’s sad too because shadow is definitely the culmination of everything. And I have a sneaking suspicion it’s going to be the groundwork for the next trilogy which I absolutely cannot wait for where I think we’ll get that large scale feel back again to the series.
'Challenge' Tombs aren't the same as an adventure in a large scale area discovering and exploring tombs as you go along like in the original game, with the atmosphere and music/quoir voices also!
Emma D having started at uncharted first before actually picking up a tomb raider game my first was underworld I see what you mean about the puzzle and exploring but later when tomb raider 2013 released honestly even up to now with shadow of the tomb raider out I found a good mix of both I enjoyed the new ones more cuz it reminded me of uncharted in a way but hey that’s just my opinion
Tomb Raider reboot, Tomb Raider 2, Tomb Raider 3? Noone calls these games like that. You should write: Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Tomb Raider 9, Tomb Raider 10, Tomb Raider 11
@@Cez24 Or if he's too lazy to pronounce the whole names he can say TR 2013, ROTTR, & SOTTR, many people say that including me, maybe because the tomb raider icon of the reboot series is (TR) and that's why, lol.
"Lara very rarely fought human enemies". This is mostly why I love the first Tomb Raider (and anniversary) so much more than any other. It helps with a intriguing feeling of isolation, and doesn't give the impression that she is a mass murderer like it's sequels. Wonderful history video by the way, well done.
@ayush Gupta Agreed! I just finished playing Tomb Raider (2013) and despite being newer, it doesn't compare to the old reboot of the series. I miss actually raiding TOMBS and solving puzzle in foreign lands
Yes I completely agree, these 2 (Legend and Underworld) are my favorites! I loved that they still were a bit campy, the newest reboot trilogy is almost like a different series starring Lara Croft lol
Not even starring Lara Croft, she is definitely another personality. And I can't stand the "dad" she is saying instead of "father". It was a pain to play the new games and have to think all the time that this is a "Tomb Raider" game. No, it's not. It's a good game, with good graphics, but it's not Tomb Raider and this imposter isn't Lara Croft.
@@madqueen_2262 totally agree. Everything we liked about lara (her badassery, her gymnastics skills, her keen interest and attention to detail in the environments, gosh even her cool accent and the way she talked) are what I really miss. This new Lara is like a whole nother character with the same name
@@shahjmir Couldn't agree more. Just bought the Tomb Raider Trilogy and eagerly playing Legend, with Anniversary and Underworld to finish. Other than the looks of it, NOTHING excites me, or compels me to want to play the newer re-boots
It still is amazing, which isn't that surprising seeing the direction that video games have taken, where you have less control over your actions than ever.
This video took a lot of time to put together, and I tried my best to make sure all the information is as accurate as possible. If you find an error, please feel free to share it with me and I'll add it to the following list: Already submitted corrections: -Tomb Raider: Legend (not Legends) -No mention of mobile versions, or movies (I know, I wanted to focus on main entries for this video) -Tomb Raider II wasn't received as well (I'm referring to critic scores. From a financial standpoint it did sell better) -No mention of expansions (again, focus was on main entries. Expansions didn't do much to progress the franchise) -Rise of the TR released on PC January 2016, a few months after the xbox release in the fall (Yes, but it was still the next fiscal year) And if you want to know more about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I'll have a full early review on Monday morning, in addition to a direct comparison where I'll have a full visual breakdown of the games graphics. Thanks for watching guys!
Thank you so much for this video, personally i only "found" Tomb Raider back in 2013 when the reboot released. So i really didn't know much about the series, however i've been very interested in the history of the series but never really gotten myself to read about it (i'm more of an auditory learner). So i appreciate you making this video to cover the history of the Tomb Raider (and i appreciate even more the time and effort you have put to make this video happen), it's really interesting to see all the highs and lows of the series and how it all began basicly. :) Thank you.
Definitely looking forward to the visual comparison, since the visuals have looked rather variable from the content I've seen so far. It'll be interesting to see how it runs too, since Rise is very intensive at the highest settings (though still looks great turned down a bit), and the system requirements have been ramped up a bit for Shadow.
I don't know how old you are but you are either lying or misinformed about Tomb Raider 2(I'm going with misinformed because unlike others I like to think more positive) T2 is the best received game by fans. Heck I prefer the 1st one(1996) over every single title EVER made but Tomb Raider 2 is the most beloved. I get drowned out every single time(from 1998-2018). Don't read wiki. They weren't around when this game came out. Tomb Raider 2 brought Lara to the highest level of popularity she has ever achieved. When II came out you couldn't walk around town without running into Lara. It's been downhill ever since. Especially with the disappointment of III. Now we have the awful new series that has turned her into a crybaby splitting the fanbase. With each new title the sales drop further and further. Fans are not pleased. But let me tell you man II(1998) is still the king. It even went up against the popularity of Resident Evil 2, held its ground and like a prime Roy Jones Jr knocked it out in sales. As much as I want 1996 to be the champ. It's not. Tomb Raider II was Lennox Lewis back in a time when Moses was parting the Red Sea and Ms Spears was annoying my ears. Oh Christ I miss the 90s. Edited(Forgot to add this): Great Vid. You are BRILLIANT!
Overall a great video, but I'll just point out one more slight mistake. You said that in Tomb Raider 2013 Lara uses a single pistol for the first time ever in the franchise...except that you said it happened way back in the Angel of Darkness
I'm an original Tomb Raider Fan, I started playing the first game the week it came out and it made me the game freak I still am. We became so into the game that players competed with each other and posted hints and stuff online at the old forum. I posted as Nohjekim. I finally played the first Tomb Raider all the way through without using any med packs. That became the test, for games after that up to game four when they changed how it worked. It started you at each level with full health and that was all you got for the whole level to complete it, and both I and a player in Australian played the game all the way through without saving in any level. If you died you had to start over. I've played all the games multiple times and can't wait for the new series, they better hurry though, I'm 82 now and my playing buddy is 85. Can't wait to see the next one!!!
@@cmmcfreire Yes, I'm still alive, I'm 85 now, and I'm still gaming. Waiting for a new Tomb Raider game. Just finished Cyberpunk 2077 and am waiting for the expansion this month. Still playing Conan Exiles and Isle of Siptah, as well as Harry Potter. Feel a little creaky now but still living on my own in my house. Just moved my bedroom downstairs to I don't have to go up and down stairs all the time. Now the goal is just to make it one more year at a time.
@@michaelkingsbury7942 here is my suggestion from an old gamer (approaching 40): Horizon Zero Dawn. Top adventure game from every aspect imo. Others: Doom Eternal, Resident Evil 2 Remake. To a longer life in good health and wealth!
Can't imagine what a masterpiece would be a classic style game, with strong storyline and challenging puzzles, with modern day graphics and animations. One can only wish.
thing is nobody likes that kind of games anymore. This era focuses more on esports titles and modern motion capture games. I personally like the tomb raider reboots than classic even though I played the classic in my psONE. This game is really looks great in PC even in high settings than in console tbh.
you can't criticize the first game for the lack of character development. Back then, nobody cared about that. People just wanted to play arcady video games for fun..not story.
Still, the OG tomb raider is all about action and puzzle solving, that's what makes it shine, I think the new tomb raider story feels forced and dumbed down the gameplay aspect, almost every tomb is short and unsatisfying to raid
samal90 IKR i used to see it as the most perfect best game ever, whenever he speaks negative about one of the old games from underworld and before it hurts, cuz i love them all. fuck uncharted fans, im a fan but tombraider above uncharted everyday any day.
I loved playing the old games as a kid. I would get stuck on the puzzles and spend a long time jumping over all the platforms trying to figure it out. The silence felt very immersive because, as Lara, I would be stuck in a tomb thinking out the next part of the puzzle and feel the ancient stillness of the stone walls around me. The pacing was great because the quiet puzzle would be offset by sudden action of a wolf or bear running out of a hole and attacking me. The action was short but impactful. I very much dislike the new focus on killing people. I loved exploring tombs, not murdering dozen of men. Leave the murdering to Assassin's creed and stick to the puzzles and exploring for Tomb Raider.
TwinTalos Shadow of the Tomb Raider had less of a focus on killing enemies, and more of a focus on stealth/surviving, as well as exploring and puzzle solving.
I know exactly what you mean it's a great song something about it strikes me as a bit melancholic but it also has the perfect vibe of intriguing discovery esp when considering the game's premise of exploring lost civilizations / artifacts / etc... It's an amazing track! It takes me back too. When I boot up the older ones it gives me kind of that ... feeling of hearing it when it was a new game..
This one and Venice Violins are just a piece of art, soundtracks back than were just that good, some that i always hear every once in a while is Tomb Raider ofc ,Dino Crisis 2 nerve tracking OST and Parasite Eve 2 and overall great soundtrack
The first reboot is the best imo they had everything action, puzzles, secrets and tombs i feel the new trilogy is more like an uncharted game, i also love uncharted but i felt in love with TR for what it is, not for being a copy franchise
as a kid i just watched my dad play these and now i got my hands on all of them from the Steam sale, i can confirm this it takes me lots of reloads and backtracking just so i can make it work. Puzzle games these days are spoonfed compared to before smh
U right. Tr 2013, ROTTR n SOTTR r less challenging. I remember spending lots of time completing the puzzle in the older games like its the hardest ive ever seen
yep. I only played the TR 2013 and I'm trying to force myself through Rise of the TR but man it's so fucking boring! It's just seems like a cheap Uncharted ripoff. Also you can clearly see it's cluttered with useless stuff to give the impression there's much into it while it's not. They should just remake TR 2, 3 and most of all 4 with current technology. This is not TR
I think it's because that game perfectly represents what tomb raider is supposed to be, you get to shoot bad guys while side flipping, explore tombs anddo parkour, or Maybe it's because in legend Lara has the best personality of all tomb raider games, she's smart, brave and cheerful, unlike in the reboot where she was the biggest crybaby ever, or Maybe it's because the game was made in a style of a fun action movie, as opposed to focusing on dark, gritty realism.
Growing up playing as Lara is the biggest reason I'm a history student today. The Last Revelation remains my favourite game in the series and it sparked my love for and fascination with history. Wish I still had my PS1 - or better yet that they did a remake, but I guess that's wishful thinking 😂
@@WhiteStripesStripiestFan I completed my undergraduate degree last year and started my Masters in Ancient History but I've decided to drop that and pursue psychology instead. It was really rewarding to study history, but the job field is so competitive so I decided to study something more guaranteed to get me a job. I wouldn't say that other people shouldn't pursue a career in history, I just personally don't think I would be able to get a job in that super competitive field.
The nostalgia....omfg. Played TB II with my dad all night long (well he played, I watched. I was 8 y/o) Today we dont speak anymore. But these where good days :)
I understand you. My mom has bpd and I had an abusive childhood, my parents aren't in my life much either. You aren't alone, let's both hold on unto our good memories. Stay safe.
Okay. :D
Must agree, I actually prefer old Lara way more. Maybe its just because I used to be a huge fan of old Tomb Raider games or what, but I miss those games a lot as well.
@@Nick930 The depth that you went into was unrivaled. I'm really surprised that your channel is as small as it is. If you keep putting this amount of work into your videos you're going to blow up. If you'd like to do a story on tomb raider speed runs let me know. I have a few connections and can find you some info.
I actually prefer the previous characterization of Lara, the "larger than life" cocky persona as you described it. She was my role model when I was a kid, she was amazing, strong, sassy, intelligent, and something I had never seen before. She was in a whole different realm than any other female characters in any media I had seen at the time. I loved her, she started my love for ancient history, especially ancient Egypt! The new reboot was an extreme let down for me, I was so hyped for 2013 TR and then I played it and just.... Everything in it felt wrong. Rise of the Tomb Raider was better, but still wrong in many aspects. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was an amazing step up, I think the team being changed had a huge impact on the end result because it felt a lot more true to the Tomb Raider franchise. Unpopular opinion, I fucking loved the Legend trilogy, and I fucking loved Angel of Darkness. It was an amazing game in my opinion and had a lot more challenge than Legend for example, and the story was very creative unlike what we have in the new reboot. I'm gonna end my rant here because I could go on and on about this until my jaw dropped lmao
Idk As someone who just finished Tomb Raider 2013 for the first time, I do like her personality. She's Badass in a way that isn't like a cheap action Movie. To me Lara showing pain after being impaled near the beginning but still going through it is badass as opposed to a bland character just sticking it out and walking away
Same here, I adored the old Lara. I always grabbed a chair from the kitchen and dragged it to the computer room to watch my dad play. I wanted to be an archaeologist for the longest time and grew my hair as long as I could to look just like her lmao. She was my role model
Personally the Lara in TR 2013 makes sense with the origin story they were going with as she didn't have any of that confidence as she had zero experience and it felt more relatable to a certain degree.
Tomb Raider was definitely the game that changed my life. I was still 7 years old when I first played this game, and even though Lara Croft was heavily sexualized, she was still an icon and an inspiration for me, as a young girl, to stand up for what I believe, learn as much as I could and take action to be like her. Most of 7 year old girls in Indonesia, at that time, just think that they want to get married and play house. She changed my life, and because of that Tomb Raider is always the best game 🥰
I remembered how I laughed out loud when that little lightbulb came on in my head playing the original TR, looking for 3 gold bars to solve a puzzle. Spent a good hour getting more and more frustrated only finding 3 lead bars......then it hit me....💡.....MIDAS......simple yet brilliant 👍🏻
Ha ha. I discovered it the hard way by getting Lara to climb on to Midas' hand. I think TR1 definitely had the hardest puzzles. I remember getting stuck quite a lot.
Dagger of Xian was the most impactful Tomb Raider to me for its massive contrast of both cultural atmosphere and geographical scenery. From oriental China to finest of Venice, from the bottom of Mediterranean to Tibet, it was simply breath-taking. And we get to fight a final battle in Lara's home, wearing a bathrobe!
Looks like you're the only one who shares an opinion with me. The first game I played was tomb raider 3, But when I played one and two after that, well two really took my breath away for the same reasons. I mean for shits sake half the ship was upside down and half right side up, blew my mind.
somebody is already trying to remake tomb raider 2 in UE4, let's hope the guy's gonna get enough attention from crystal dynamic so that it'll get serious
So many incredible levels too, like the Wreck of the Maria Doria, Barkhang Monastery, Temple of Xian, Floating Islands... I wish Squeenix would greenlight a remake in the same vein as Anniversary.
I'm aimin to play Legend, and Anniversary. I beat the original back in 2016, and now I'm playin Tomb Raider 2 right now. I'm on level 12 at the monastery and damn, it is really good.
Yeah, it's a shame that even when you are exploring the tombs in the new trilogy, you're always on the edge, expecting new enemies swarming. I just wanna explore the tombs in peace :(
Exactly and I was so mad when you could even use the double pistol until the very end and couldn't even us them properly. Also, in rise of the tomb raider the pistol were gone!!! Why? and I really wanted more exploring. The new franchise is nice, but it feels lacking of the soul of Tomb Raider.
Grace Watts I totally agree. And another thing I HATE about the new games, and it's not just the Tomb Raider, is the weapon upgrade thing! Just give me a freaking complete weapon I can use through the whole game. I don't want to have to think about which materials I need, which weapon to upgrade first, etc. I just wanna focus on the dang exploring!!!
Thank you! Now I finally know why I don`t really enjoy the new games of Tomb Raider. The exploring is missing! Okay and I think Lara isn`t as tough as she should be... I loved her in the old ones, in the new games she seems absolutly different. At least that is my opinion.. the new graphic with the old atmosphere would be perfect.
Exactly.. To me tomb raider was about puzzles and exploring.. I hate that the new ones are more based on killing so many enemies.. Without them the games are super easy. In the old games I had multiple jumpscares cause I didn’t expect an enemy and it had an suprise element. The new ones have like 10guys on every new area or other enemies
Exactly!! This new Lara doesn't have the twinkle in her eye when she see a new tomb, its more like a chore to her. The old ones were more spunky, fun, and loved the vehicle levels. The new ones are fun, I like the new realisms and danger to them, but the stripped the fun and excitement in getting lost and exploring everything. If they added that, I think they would be more widely loved and with the more classic weapon.
Those TR2 underwater levels were the **** back in the day. Used to scare the crap out of me. While I didn't like the whole departure from raiding tombs, I still love those TR2 underwater stages!
totally agree.. they wet my appetite and had me holding my breath for real as I attempted to conquer them. Yet another fantastic way TR was and will be groundbreaking AGAIN!!!
I remember back in the day after the superb Tomb raider 1, I was so dissapointed with the second installment that I didn't finish the game. I now understand why. The magic was gone and the game was rushed and turned from a mystery adventure game to a standard action plattformer.
In all fairness, Tomb Raider 3 & 4 did a much better job at recapturing the magic of the original game. 3 had mostly modern environments, but made up for it by bringing its level design closer to the original's roots. The Last Revelation has you mostly exploring tombs and solving puzzles, making for a fantastic return to form.
This is definitely THE BEST video I’ve ever seen about history of the Tomb Raider. I also grew up with this game, I’ve been playing since I was 4 so this series is very important to me. Thank you buddy for making this type of video. I already bought the Shadow of the Tomb Raider and I can’t wait for 12th of September!
The original Core games got me back into gaming properly, after not playing much since the ZX Spectrum days. It really was a revelation to play a fully realised 3D game back then. Hours of fun exploring
Same here! I was 5 when I started playing tomb raider. It always holds a special place in my heart. Even if some of the games weren’t such a big succes I’ve enjoyed every one of them 😇
For me Tomb Raider is very important too! I was 6 years when my father played the game and i starting watching. It was so exciting! Been hooked on it ever since. Great video and looking forward to getting the new game tommorow.
I know everyone agrees that The Angel of darkness was a disaster, and in part I agree especially regarding the controls. However I loved the solitary exploration, her looks, and a lot of the environments. I overall really enjoyed that game (although really struggled in finishing that final spider)
it wasnt all that bad, was a good game on its own i finished it twice but just cause im a huge TR fan, its a skippable title in TR history it makes no sense history wise the final of TR4 deserved so much more care and atention than to what it was given, if the game started on the pyramid as lara escapes it, that would be phenomenal but didnt happen and im glad it didnt cause the game is nothing compared to the classics, only real improvement was graphics
@Subi_fan Well said. It was disgraceful the way Eidos treated Core Design. They pushed them into releasing Angel of Darkness before it was ready. As a result it was very bug ridden when it was released and was heavily criticised. Eidos blamed Core Design for it and disbanded them.
Angel of Darkness was my first introduction to Tomb Raider because I was a kid when it came out just discovering video games. I was hooked. Forever a Tomb Raider fan. Angel of Darkness was perfect in my eyes but again, I was a kid. haha And going forward, I played every single Tomb Raider game. Lara in that Legend Black dress when she was in Japan!!! Iconic
Ahhhh that dress is indeed iconic, the whole Japan level actually is amazing. I recently replayed tomb raider legend and Japan is still my fave, theres just Something so thrilling And fun About climbing the high rooftops with cars beneath you in a DRESS and Zip yelling in your ear "Lara this is crazy people stuff!!"
My very first tomb raider game was the 4 : last revelation for ps1 , damn that was a really hard game , it took me almost a year to complete it ( i was around 14 years old) , but that game teached me a lot of things, solving puzzles, beeing careful of things, questioning everything, after that i played all the other games , the 3 game " adventures" was great for me , that last level omg hahahah.
Just imagine if original Core team were given more time and respect for development and they didnt go defunct. A modern TR game made with the passion and quality of the first game
I doubt it, as nick mentioned, Core design wanted to leave Lara behind, and wanted to work on a different genre. Wich is why they sort of forced her demise in revelation and then brought her back in chronicles and Angel of Darkness because Eidos, and the fans weren't happy I can't blame em really, they were really good developers I have the upmost respect for. But they were a small team tired of the ancient tomb level design. They just wanted to focus on more modern level design and mission impossible/Metal gear solid esque themed story/gameplay.
according to the video, they wanted to end the series. but people raged at them. some times you have to just accept that maybe people run out of ideas or only created a plan for a handful of games with a start, middle and end :)
@@janewarner1010 I did that. And I'd just been overriding the same game save each time so,,,sigh, right back to the beginning. In TR3 in the Arctic mines there's one turn she can make which maroons her in one room for ever. You definitely want to save before you do that!
By the time the original Tomb Raider came out, we were all tired of looking at the always-male-protagonist-asses while playing. Hard for someone today to understand, but female lead characters were non existent before Lara Croft
@@perkspectivex We didn't know Samus was a female right away, but I get the resident evil reference. I'm thinking Vaslilis was focusing on adventure games.
To me Anniversary looks amazing, at the time it didnt feel like a ps2 game, because the character model and the environments looked so good. To me it almost felt like a ps2.5 game
Same! I finally got a PS2 when the 3 came out and Anniversary was one of the few great games I rented. We didn't own too many and I had no way of knowing what were the best games for the system but the graphics and gameplay blew me away! I need to replay that one soon.
21:00 I think Angel of darkness was a good and logical move to the saga. They FAIL because the project was too big for the company. And they do a bad job with the new thech, probably they run out of time. But the ideas where so cool, new locations, more realistic environments, talk to npc's, a playable second character, etc. etc. Maybe too much for a Lara's Saga.
Angel of Darkness's biggest flaw came in two parts: the rushed development making for horrid controls and gameplay...and Curtis Trent. The concept, as you said, had promise. They just failed to deliver.
I had fun playing aod on the pc. The only glitch that i had wad the faces not showing correctly but the music was very good and the game play was ok as well.
Anniversary was my favorite one. I don't like the modern ones so much, even though RotTR had its moments. Surely not those where you needed to slay hundreds of enemies... not sure how the reboots fare so well in this summary. I think the Tomb Raiders from Legend to Underworld were the best, alongside the classic ones.
All they had to do for the new tomb raider series was adjust the controls to be more realistic and be make the stories a little more in depth. because i miss actually having to explore and travel and finding artifacts and solving actually puzzles. all the new series cares about is trinity im so tired of hearing her talk about trinity i just want lara main focus to be the archaeologists she is traveling and exploring new terrains with her backpack and giving us a history lesson
Am i the only one who just can’t get enough of the Tomb Raider Underworld Trilogy? I have never been more addicted to a game than that one trilogy, granted huge fan of the first games but these games pushed out the franchise further into world exploring and a huge massive non continuous level hoping and playing IMHO, when you start Anniversary and the manor is burning and they shoot you thinking you are the bad one, excellent story telling right there!
Legend-Anniversary-Underworld is still my favorite trilogy. It controls very smoothly and fluidly yet still feels like a true Tomb Raider experience (Especially Anniversary). The modern trilogy is still pretty awesome though, I just wish there was more tomb raiding in them, and more of the complex climbing puzzles of the previous series. Well made video Nick, great job!
Glad I'm not the only one. +Chloe B I read about that in the reviews and I'm looking forward to it. I don't know if it'll hold a candle to Anniversary but I'm hoping for the best.
When I was 7, Legend came out. And me & my sister fell in love with the game. At the time, I thought it was the first game. My sister still plays Underworld and Anniversary on her laptop, & I just bought Tomb Raider (2013). Even though it’s different, I still love it and have a ton of fun playing it
I remember playing Angel of Darkness on the PC, and absolutely hating the controls. When Legend came out, it was a revelation. Suddenly controlling the character was actually fun. I remember trying to decide between the standard vs the "next gen" settings. Next gen would have moments of brilliance in the world graphics, but Lara looked worse. I always went back to the standard mode. It's still a fantastic game. I played it on modern hardware about a year ago. Anniversary was even better to control. I have underworld, but I haven't had time to play through it yet much. I know I remember wishing I could adjust the camera some. I'm not as big of a fan of Rise of the Tomb Raider (Haven't played Shadow), but I liked 2013 reboot more.
I hate how classic Lara is viewed as an "exploited woman" when I've always viewed her as a woman in total control of her sexuality and I've always looked up to her. Anyone who's played through TR1-TR6 should know that there was no exploitation whatsoever. Lara's curves were partially due to the art style which was more like a comic book brought to life hence the impossible proportions, but still - what makes a woman with a voluptuous figure automatically exploited? It was TR7 (Legend) that introduced unlockable bikini outfits and Underworld that offered bikini as a DLC - but still, I fail to see how a strong female character wearing bikini is sexually exploited? This just drives me crazy. If anything I find sassy female characters in control of their sexuality extremely empowering (e.g. Bayonetta). Also the story in the 2013 reboot is hands down the weakest IMO. It's one huge cliche after another and the supporting characters are all boring and dull AF.
Exactly, It's bizarre that Lara's designers made her an archetypal strong independent female protagonist, but some still consider her objectified because they also made her sexy. Then they rant about slut shaming without any awareness of the irony!
They did give her oversized boobs in the ps1 games (it was accidental too but they kept it that way for a while), like we're allowed to point that out, but yh I like the old lara croft as a character more, and the old tomb raider games actually had exploration, they were amazing.
@@WarlikePrimal true, but there is nothing wrong with slut shaming (male or female). You cheat on a partner/spouse or give it out to every Tom dick and Harry (or Jane, Sarah, and Cindy) than yeah you're going be called a slut and rightfully so. This type of thing is needed in society or you will get a bunch of narcissism and divorce with broken homes, stds and unhappy people... Oh wait that's what's happened already. As for Tomb Raider, Luara was always a strong character. The thing that makes her great is she seemed whole and not either good at everything with no faults (Rey from new star wars) but she still showed her feminine side. In other words they didn't make her a man with tits and long hair.
@@_aq831 define "oversized". I have friends with large breasts who went out hiking, Lara Croft was their role model. Just because beauty standards changed and now tight pants became more fashionable than 90s shorts and model body became more popular than playboy bunny body doesn't mean she's anyhow less sexualized now.
I so miss the older games. I loved watching my dad play the originals when I was a little girl. Legend was the first I played myself, and I realized enjoyed it. I hate the over focus on survival in reboot, and how limited your choices are in terms of what controls you can use. This last game is really pitiful. It could’ve been amazing with the settings and mythology they used. Interesting it’s shallow and incoherent.
Yes! I'm so god damn sick of these 'new Tomb Raider games' as they are all just generic Un Charted type games. All FAR too cinematic. The old ones felt like you were actually exploring somewhere not being forced through a movie set. Crafting, arrows, stealth...yawn bloody yawn.
@@bunkaaa8726 One of the rare redeeming qualities of the reboot trilogy is the fact that it has stunning visuals from time to time. I would literally just stop in my tracks and explore the scenery with the camera.
@@uros.u.novakovic From what I've seen, and I've not played them just seen many many videos of them, that you can not do much with the scenery other then a set path ?
Same! I’ve played the newer tomb raider games (which are amazing don’t get me wrong) but I always end up going back to play legend and anniversary. May just be nostalgia reasons but they’re my faves!
I miss the original Tomb Raider games. These newer generation Tomb Raider games just don't feel the same, and are barely connected to the originals. The older games were all about exploration, puzzle solving and atmosphere. These games today are all about eye candy and "action", but they just feel like imitations of games like Uncharted. I'm not saying they're BAD, but they simply aren't anything like the older games. Great graphics and so-so action sequences don't make up for that loss of wonder.
I completely agree, I miss the old Lara so much. She was witty, sophisticated, elegant and classy, and more to the point, she was a through and through aristocrat. I wish they would have just let her die after Cronicles, Angel of Darkness was a mess and then Crystal Dynamics came to ruin both Tomb Raider and Lara as a character, turning the franchise into an action series. I still play the old games to this day, and 1 and 4 are my definate favorites, with three not far behind. The solitude, long streches of just exploration and puzzle solving and the lack of Hollywoodesque action simply make them outstanding. The new games focuses way to much on action over puzzles and platforming. Now, I am on the same page as you; the new games are not necessarily bad (I've only played the first one), but they are distinctively not Tomb Raider. I hate reboots, and I hate when they transfer franchises. If franchise protection should have any meaning, it is to guarantee concistency. If your product is so weak it has to piggy back on the name of a classic, you should reconsider making it. Make it able to stand on it's own feet and build it's own name instead. What is the point of using an established name if you won't honor what that entails. A reboot of an origin story is simply disrespectful and spiteful towards those who supported and loved the franchise in question, regardless of the original franchise. And if you are going to make a sequel in a well established and loved franchise, show some respect towards that legacy. Scrapping it in favor of making your own is insanely disrespectful, and at that point the franchise might as well be turned over to public domain, so that people who do love and respect the legacy can have a crack at it. There is no reason to protect a name if that is all it is, the only reason to protect franchises is in order to protect it's legacy.
I think the latest trilogy is a MASTERPIECE. Narrative, gameplay, soundtrack, visuals, voice acting, character development. action, puzzles, all of it, just perfect!
As a long-time Tomb Raider player and fan, thank you. This is a great retrospective. Like others, I prefer the early Tomb Raider titles: there was much more emphasis on exploration and puzzles. I really don't like the direction of the latest releases. They're all visually stunning, true, but all the shooting and weapon crafting and assault techniques do take a lot of the fun away for me. Cheers, and thank you again for your work!
The Last Revelation is my best game I ever played! What a game design! And puzzles. I think I played at as a child, eventhough loved it, I got stuck somewhere and left it there. And then as a grown adult I played it many times, and thought to myself all these other games are really, really bad. It will still hold it's greatness in this time. Imagine it's remastered and people who never played TR, I bet it will be highly praised!
What I learned from this video and the comments is that you can never make everyone happy. Someone is going to say something negative about every game. But personally I think Lara is a badass no matter what :)
"exploiting her sexuality" and yet her voice actress and the movie actress, Camilla and Alicia, both say that she's awesome and sexy and that there shouldn't be a need to separate, she is what she is and even women like that, heck, of course women wants to play a sexy female version of Rambo.
I doubt her sexy image did sales any harm. Only raging feminist loonies would have the time or inclination to complain about it, and they all probably secretly lust after her anyway. If it caused any controversy it would only peak people's interest.
... the gameplay itself was good, even tho it wasn’t close to as classic TR game series. The story itself is what bothers me the most, I want to skip all TRU scenes and focus playing the game instead.. gesh, all of her search from finding her mother, what a sad “waste of time” in the first place 🤦🏻♀️
As someone who's never played Tomb Raider, but is familiar with Eidos from the Thief games, I really appreciate this complete history of the series. I know this took a lot of work, and I'd say that you did a flawless job. Thanks, now I'm off to get "Rise" for my first adventure as Lara Croft...
The first Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 2 games were the reasons I got back into gaming during the PS1 days, especially Tomb Raider. You really nailed the whole idea of what Tomb Raider started out as and the many many ups and downs of the franchise, yet it still keeps going. I'm SO happy to hear you describe in detail about the first Tomb Raider and how music was used more as a way of communicating ideas rather than being an imposing soundtrack and how the silence through out the majority of the game was what added to the overall feel and uniqueness of the game (not your exact words but that's the gist of it to me). I really want to thank you for this awesome trip down memory lane and for a video that is extremely well done! Cheers!
I did not mind the flaws, it is a game, not real life. It was fun, sometimes I think the old TR games were more fun, they had no options with map or hints, highlight stuff you should do. I know we can turn this off on the new ones or just not use hints, but...if you do not have the option you get frustrated, more invested to find out on your own and beat the game and that felt good.
I been playing the new trilogy this year. Even in 2020 - 2013’s tomb raider looks amazing. I’m on Shadow of the Tomb raider now. Friggin amazing graphics
I unfortunately started with shadow but that got me hooked on the game.Idk why but for both uncharted and tomb raider I always end up getting the latest game getting hooked and then buying the previous installments. Now that I think about it same with assassins creed
the_smol _one bruh same! Me and my step mom (she has an Xbox) are now playing rise of the tomb raider. It’s a lot easier than shadow of the tomb raider tho.
@@ilhandaanish2381 AC Odyssey aint nothing like the first titles, at least in the story telling side its completly different, but once u finish AC1, AC2, AC2 Brotherhood, AC2 Revelations u will care a lot more for the series AC3 is ok, for me it was just the finalization of the history, for me Revelations was the culmination of the history and than AC4 finishes it off once and for all, AC3 was an ok title compared to AC4 wich was just epic (and u get a glimpse to what happened to the team and Desmond final destination)
I grew up with the franchise and to this day Tomb Raider 4 is my favorite. Though I have to say I also enjoyed the newer ones like Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. They get a lot of critic but I think they stayed the truest to the old gameplay. I mean the new ones like shadow of the tomb raider are fine but more as independent games and not as tomb raider. I don't know what it is but they don't capture the feeling for me.
As a fan of tomb raider since childhood I really really enjoyed this video. the effort you put in connecting all the pieces together is incredible! Chronicles is actually my favourite, probably because it's the first one I have ever played, but I have to say I still enjoy it😆
maybe I'm just an old fart, but 1, 2 & 3 remain my favourite games of all time. Even with their dated graphics there's something nostalgic about them. And some how the awe has not faded. Still have an old win 95 pc with a Matrox Millennium card installed (the best card for the original games) just so I can revisit them. The unforgiveable glitches of Angel of Darkness nearly killed the series for me though. I could forgive the change in style, but the technical problems just made it feel like I was playing a beta release . And with patches it was still fatally flawed (kinda hard to be immersive when Lara could just walk through walls because of non existent collision detection) That being said, one can imagine my reaction to Anniversary...which provided the nostalgia I was holding on to with stunning visuals great video retrospective - thank you for your efforts
Strange that. I played AOD two years ago on Windows XP with all the patches and didn't have any problems or glitches at all. Trent was sluggish to control but thankfully he was only in three levels, there were a couple of textures missing but that didn't really effect the game. Otherwise it ran perfectly. It was TR4 and TR5 that had the worst bugs. I had to download a save game from a fan site in order to finish TR4 and the final level of TR5 was so bug ridden it was virtually unplayable. Everyone moans about the problems with AOD but no-one ever mentions the problems with the two previous ones. It wasn't just my PC, they are all known bugs.
Ahhh yes. When you had to think and pay attention in games. The good old days. I remember how hard these first few game were. And how fun they were and satisfying when you got pass certain levels. Love it. Lara is a boss
The Last Revelation was always my favorite, played them all, started in 98', I'm glad to see it's not just my favorite. The soundtrack, story, everything just has this warm harmony. DEFINITELY a game worth remastering.
So it's mine, i remember i got to the city of the dead in 2002 ( i was 15 then) and a friend of my broke my disc, never played it again. Then, I figured it was something i had to finish with... In 2019 i finally finished it, i felt like a child again. I still whistle the intro song when i need to focus and when stressed
Credit where it's due: The remake games are very well made. But it's not Tomb Raider, on principle. Tomb Raider was like the Legend of Zelda with guns, and a badass female lead; ALSO FIGHTING A T-REX. Tomb Raider 2013 would be like making Pokemon into a super edgy, hyper violent monster summoning anime where the Poke-balls are magical artifacts and the Pokemon kill each other. Or like turning Grand Theft Auto into a "Street Gangsta works undercover for the police to overthrow an illegal network of car-thieves and chop-shops". Or like if they remade Devil May Cry's Dante into a hard-boiled detective who has to stop a secret demon invasion when he learns that his father, who taught him the trade of being a Private Investigator, was actually a demon spy who betrayed the armies of Hell and discovers he has super powers. That'd be like if Resident Evil swapped out Umbrella and the B.O.W.s for a Necromancer Cult and supernatural zombies and demons. The 2013 remake completely took the game and turned it upside down and removed everything that made Tomb Raider an individual compared to other games.
"Street Gangsta works undercover for the police to overthrow an illegal network of car-thieves and chop-shops" That's almost the storyline to Sleeping Dogs.
>Tomb Raider 2013 would be like making Pokemon into a super edgy, hyper violent monster summoning anime where the Poke-balls are magical artifacts and the Pokemon kill each other. Shin Megami Tensei: Emerald Version?
"That'd be like if Resident Evil swapped out Umbrella and B.O.W.s for a Necromancer cult and supernatural zombie and demons." You know...not a bad idea and how RE4 was, it's not too much a stretch to see...
"Or like if they remade Devil May Cry's Dante into a hard-boiled detective who has to stop a secret demon invasion when he learns that his father, who taught him the trade of being a Private Investigator, was actually a demon spy who betrayed the armies of Hell and discovers he has super powers. "
She's been shoved aside in favor of the more "grounded" Lara. What I don't think people realize is that Lara was an icon because she could do amazing things and had an air of charisma while doing it. The new Lara is fine to me, but classic just had more presence. Not to say she didn't have problems either, but there's a reason why most fans refer to her when they think of Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics did accomplish what they wanted, as the only thing the new and old Lara have in common is a name. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.
I loved the gym in Lara's house. I do remember though that there was always a bit of the level I never got to. I think you needed a key or something? I just remember never managing to see the entire thing.
She had a cellar under the stairs where she kept her booty. I think the door was on a timer. In TR3 she'd had it converted in to a rather nice thinking parlour, aquarium and library. I seem to remember there was another secret room in TR3 where she had the Dagger of Xian and other artefacts on display as well as a T-Rex trophy head on the wall. I often wondered how she explained that one to the taxidermist. Funnily enough in that game there is a key she finds on the roof of St. Paul's cathedral which serves no purpose whatsoever.
I know its two years after this video came out, but the lack of reference to Laura Cruz (the original prototype for the character) which gives more context to her cold, tan skinned, long ponytail design. It was during testing where she was changed to being English, as playtasters could not pronounce Laura Cruz, but her overall design was left unchanged.
Yeah saw that information vid on the movies special menu, Americans couldn't say Laura so it become lara as that's how they kept pronouncing it and the company just went with it and the rest is history
In my own opinion Legend, anniversary, and underworld are still the best. An d I really just want one if them remastered or at least just republish it as the original on PS4
well done! can't wait for the new game! You brought back so much nostalgia with the video clips from the original games... still in love with TR III and Last Revelation.
guess i’m the only one who likes the direction the series is going lol. only complaint is maybe have different settings throughout the game instead of one cold wilderness or one hot jungle.
My mother got me Tomb Raider 1 for Christmas never asked for it didn't even know what it was but man that was awesome not really sure where I got the PS1 but I had that already then the next year she got me Tomb Raider 2 for Christmas great times
I have a confession to make: I SUCK at the Tomb Raider games. I own Tomb Raider 2, 3 and 4 and I haven't finished any of them. But that's not all: I am literally SCARED of those games. For some weird reasons they are more terrifying to me than the actual survival-horror-games, that I've played.
My dad used to play them when my brother and I were little (this would've been when 4 was the newest one). We used to drag chairs from the kitchen so we could watch. I remember always getting super excited about it. Parts freaked me out though. Willard at the end of 3 gave me literal nightmares. I also suck at them and play with walkthroughs, but I still have to give myself pep talks when I know there's a fight coming up. 3 has some creepy parts and 4 is dark and eerie for pretty much the whole game. You ought to finish 2 though. It's very good and is pretty easy on the nerves.
thanks for your confession. I played every has every single one with walkthroughs and I get hella scared too when it comes to a boss fight. Nice to know that there are more out there.
Really great video man, I absolutely loved it. You mention in another comment reply that these types of videos don't do well... I hope that doesn't prevent more long format retrospectives. Obviously it's more than one, but even if just one person is touched by your work, it's worth it - pulling on another person's mind and heart strings is no easy feat and should be cherished. You should be proud, this is the new definitive TR retrospective on TH-cam.
You sir, are a hero. And don't worry, these videos are the most fun to make. And why bother making videos if you don't like making them? I'll definitely continue making these :) Maybe TH-cam's algorithm one day will actually allow it to pop up in the suggested feed :P
My first pc game ever was TR2. So many great memories. I was playing the game almost every day. I was one of those who loved Chronicles. I thought it was interesting, different from the usual tomb raiding locales.
I started with Tomb Raider 2 years and years ago and absolutely loved it! I was really excited to get Tomb Raider 3 for Christmas shortly after. I also really enjoyed 4. For me that was Tomb Raider until 2018’s release which I really enjoyed! I really wasn’t very keen on anything between Last Revelations and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Great video!

So true
I always took the 'black sky' as just the unseeable roof of a really huge cave.

That's exactly what I thought as well.
I never thought about it. The black sky seemed to enhance the feeling of a lost location more than a blue sky would. For me, the feeling of isolation in a game has never been equaled.

35 also, same here. I was blown away when I had all the tomb raiders for original PS and PS One back in 2005 lol.
It's a nitpick for sure but very frustrating but not as bad as the classic Americanism of calling LARA - "LAURA".
Nah I hate the new ones. Besides I don't have many animals to fight either. I fight humans in every game, fighting animals is more scary.

This video took a lot of time to put together, and I tried my best to make sure all the information is as accurate as possible. If you find an error, please feel free to share it with me and I'll add it to the following list:
Already submitted corrections:
-Tomb Raider: Legend (not Legends)
-No mention of mobile versions, or movies (I know, I wanted to focus on main entries for this video)
-Tomb Raider II wasn't received as well (I'm referring to critic scores. From a financial standpoint it did sell better)
-No mention of expansions (again, focus was on main entries. Expansions didn't do much to progress the franchise)
-Rise of the TR released on PC January 2016, a few months after the xbox release in the fall (Yes, but it was still the next fiscal year)
And if you want to know more about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I'll have a full early review on Monday morning, in addition to a direct comparison where I'll have a full visual breakdown of the games graphics.
Thank you.
Nick930 you did a fantastic job 👍👍

Great Vid.

You're 80?!
Still alive buddy?
@@cmmcfreire Yes, I'm still alive, I'm 85 now, and I'm still gaming. Waiting for a new Tomb Raider game. Just finished Cyberpunk 2077 and am waiting for the expansion this month.
Still playing Conan Exiles and Isle of Siptah, as well as Harry Potter.
Feel a little creaky now but still living on my own in my house. Just moved my bedroom downstairs to I don't have to go up and down stairs all the time.
Now the goal is just to make it one more year at a time.

Others: Doom Eternal, Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Would be so cool! I love the reboots too but they are a different thing completely.
thing is nobody likes that kind of games anymore. This era focuses more on esports titles and modern motion capture games. I personally like the tomb raider reboots than classic even though I played the classic in my psONE. This game is really looks great in PC even in high settings than in console tbh.
@@432782ful gotta love those pc's i wish i still have my pc
you can't criticize the first game for the lack of character development. Back then, nobody cared about that. People just wanted to play arcady video games for fun..not story.
samal90 tell that to fans of metal gear lol Metal Gear 100% disproves your statement.
Ahem, FFVII which came just months later...
Still, the OG tomb raider is all about action and puzzle solving, that's what makes it shine,
I think the new tomb raider story feels forced and dumbed down the gameplay aspect, almost every tomb is short and unsatisfying to raid
samal90 IKR i used to see it as the most perfect best game ever, whenever he speaks negative about one of the old games from underworld and before it hurts, cuz i love them all. fuck uncharted fans, im a fan but tombraider above uncharted everyday any day.
corniel THANK YOU, YOU HAVE A TASTE WOW
Tomb Raider 1 is the best for me, it was a marvel at the time, huge tomb design, precision required for the moves, secrets, beautiful music :)
Couldn’t agree more. They captured the atmosphere perfect.
0:14 Jesus, that music is so evoking, so memorable, so nostalgic.....takes me back.
It hit me the same way. So many memories of me and my brother playing tomb raider on his playstation.
Yes , indeed. 🤩
Take me back to, please. I was so young and so happy playing videogames with PS. The best video-game machine ever.
This one and Venice Violins are just a piece of art, soundtracks back than were just that good, some that i always hear every once in a while is Tomb Raider ofc ,Dino Crisis 2 nerve tracking OST and Parasite Eve 2 and overall great soundtrack

@@unlimitedayoproduction2452 yes bro you are right the new triology is great and epic
Graphics and lighting effects can't make up for a lot of stuff that made the old versions very much loved.
The biggest difference was that in the older games you actually had to think.
as a kid i just watched my dad play these and now i got my hands on all of them from the Steam sale, i can confirm this
it takes me lots of reloads and backtracking just so i can make it work. Puzzle games these days are spoonfed compared to before smh
yes like the last revelation for years i did not find out how to beat the fire puzzle to get the sandclock
In shadow of the tomb raider you can change the puzzle difficulty to where it makes really think. It’s awesome
Maybe it's purely because of nostalgia but Legend will always be my favourite, there's just something special about that game
It has the best dlc
100% agree
Legends was the first and only tomb raider I finished I just loved the story combat and the mechanics and the puzzles weren't so fricken difficult
Growing up playing as Lara is the biggest reason I'm a history student today. The Last Revelation remains my favourite game in the series and it sparked my love for and fascination with history. Wish I still had my PS1 - or better yet that they did a remake, but I guess that's wishful thinking 😂

@@Nick930 hii love Lara and I am 10 she is my romodel please reply if u are nice I am playing now 😂 on my new XBOX ONE
Same! Angel of darkness was my favorite too. Initial tomb raider is synonymous with my childhood.
Same here, I adored the old Lara. I always grabbed a chair from the kitchen and dragged it to the computer room to watch my dad play. I wanted to be an archaeologist for the longest time and grew my hair as long as I could to look just like her lmao. She was my role model
Loving the Legend trilogy an "unpopular" opinion ? We learn something everyday. ^^
Wdym with "heavily sexualized"
Wow
Me too!
@Sergeant Arch Dornan Did her comment strike a nerve?
@Sergeant Arch Dornan The comment definitely struck a nerve lol. Lara was definitely sexualized and when someone calls it out you wanna call bullshit?
I remembered how I laughed out loud when that little lightbulb came on in my head playing the original TR, looking for 3 gold bars to solve a puzzle. Spent a good hour getting more and more frustrated only finding 3 lead bars......then it hit me....💡.....MIDAS......simple yet brilliant 👍🏻
Ha ha. I discovered it the hard way by getting Lara to climb on to Midas' hand. I think TR1 definitely had the hardest puzzles. I remember getting stuck quite a lot.
@@ivorbiggun710 OMG I remember that. The good old die and retry mechanism :-)

Have you seen the fan made remastered of the Great Wall level? It is superb! Wish they could remaster the entire game
The nostalgia still hits me hard when watching those wolves & bears in the older games.
I remember those moments like it was yesterday.
The 'swooping' noise going in to the inventory followed by the original Lara theme really sets me off on a nostalgia trip.
@@ivorbiggun710 Now i see why in the new reboot wolves and bears were there, gotta include that in my retrospect
My favorites are Tomb Raider 1, Tomb Raider 2, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Tomb Raider Legend
I'm aimin to play Legend, and Anniversary. I beat the original back in 2016, and now I'm playin Tomb Raider 2 right now. I'm on level 12 at the monastery and damn, it is really good.
its called "Tomb Raider" not "Tomb Raider 1"
Yet another fantastic way TR was and will be groundbreaking AGAIN!!!
yh I remember back in the 90s , the TR2 underwater levels were dope , for back then it was amazing
I like the Legend era best to be honest. Very accessable and the best version of Lara if you ask me.
Same here. I totally agree.
@Subi_fan yeah. One could say that trilogy of games where too short in general.
@Subi_fan I'm amazed they remade 1. And it's a hell of a game.

I know everyone agrees that The Angel of darkness was a disaster, and in part I agree especially regarding the controls. However I loved the solitary exploration, her looks, and a lot of the environments. I overall really enjoyed that game (although really struggled in finishing that final spider)
It could have been great if corporate douchebags didn't rush it
I love AOD too much..
it wasnt all that bad, was a good game on its own i finished it twice but just cause im a huge TR fan, its a skippable title in TR history it makes no sense history wise the final of TR4 deserved so much more care and atention than to what it was given, if the game started on the pyramid as lara escapes it, that would be phenomenal but didnt happen and im glad it didnt cause the game is nothing compared to the classics, only real improvement was graphics
It was one of my faves. I love the athmosphere of it. It has so much potential and has the best stoyline imo :(
It's my favourite
And here 23 years later, I still remember and love the original Tomb Raider
@Subi_fan Well said. It was disgraceful the way Eidos treated Core Design. They pushed them into releasing Angel of Darkness before it was ready. As a result it was very bug ridden when it was released and was heavily criticised. Eidos blamed Core Design for it and disbanded them.
Im playing through the first game again, and it's still super solid to this day, it has aged incredibly well.
you didnt watch the video, did you?
Shame the controls were so bad in AoD.
Just imagine if original Core team were given more time and respect for development and they didnt go defunct. A modern TR game made with the passion and quality of the first game
I doubt it, as nick mentioned, Core design wanted to leave Lara behind, and wanted to work on a different genre. Wich is why they sort of forced her demise in revelation
and then brought her back in chronicles and Angel of Darkness because Eidos, and the fans weren't happy
I can't blame em really, they were really good developers I have the upmost respect for.
But they were a small team tired of the ancient tomb level design.
They just wanted to focus on more modern level design and mission impossible/Metal gear solid esque themed story/gameplay.
adapt or die, see the naughty dog made crash bandicoot then complete change to uncharted and made sucess to this day
Core wasnt interested anymore after TR2. Too much hard work.
according to the video, they wanted to end the series. but people raged at them. some times you have to just accept that maybe people run out of ideas or only created a plan for a handful of games with a start, middle and end :)
It sounded like they burnt out due to publisher demands though

Same! I finally got a PS2 when the 3 came out and Anniversary was one of the few great games I rented. We didn't own too many and I had no way of knowing what were the best games for the system but the graphics and gameplay blew me away! I need to replay that one soon.
Both Legend and Anniversary looks so damn good for what are their core PS2 games.
They just failed to deliver.
it sucked, terrible engine.

I prefer all the originals
All they had to do for the new tomb raider series was adjust the controls to be more realistic and be make the stories a little more in depth. because i miss actually having to explore and travel and finding artifacts and solving actually puzzles. all the new series cares about is trinity im so tired of hearing her talk about trinity i just want lara main focus to be the archaeologists she is traveling and exploring new terrains with her backpack and giving us a history lesson
Boy I miss that backpack for sure.~ :-D

Agreed. Loved the trilogy both in gameplay and story.
Have you checked out the newest game's puzzles? Seems they went back to complex ones.
Glad I'm not the only one.

prince of persia trilogy is great too
When I was 7, Legend came out. And me & my sister fell in love with the game. At the time, I thought it was the first game. My sister still plays Underworld and Anniversary on her laptop, & I just bought Tomb Raider (2013). Even though it’s different, I still love it and have a ton of fun playing it
Don't blame me but The Last Revelation is my favorite.
yo same
This game was such a huge part of my childhood... that music make feels so nostalgic. Love it
I remember playing Angel of Darkness on the PC, and absolutely hating the controls.
Couldn't agree more with everything you said.
Lara Croft a timeless icon
Conclusion for me - 20+ years and I still LOVE TOMB RAIDER! Never let this franchise die.
They should do a Remastered Tomb Raider 4
Best Story so far :)
They should remake it with Anniversary visuals and gameplay
Legend, AOD and TR4 have a very good story. ^^
they should remake aod tbh. its one of fav tr games
PEM aod could of been a masterpiece In my opinion. But i still enjoy it
I agree! It was my first Tomb Raider game and my favorite (:
Underworld anniversary and legend were my faves
They are Objectively the best Tomb raider games😀
Underworld! 💙
Tuvi nah
@Jayne Skye same
Same! I’ve played the newer tomb raider games (which are amazing don’t get me wrong) but I always end up going back to play legend and anniversary. May just be nostalgia reasons but they’re my faves!
Tomb Raider Angel of darkness was my favorite one ! because it feels soo nostalgic to me
I miss the original Tomb Raider games.
@@uuamenator perhaps the reason everyone keeps going on and on about it is because it's true.
Ever consider that?
The reboot series is Uncharted with an improved cover system and gritty tone. Not a bad game by itself, but not really Tomb Raider.
k
As a long-time Tomb Raider player and fan, thank you. This is a great retrospective. Like others, I prefer the early Tomb Raider titles: there was much more emphasis on exploration and puzzles. I really don't like the direction of the latest releases. They're all visually stunning, true, but all the shooting and weapon crafting and assault techniques do take a lot of the fun away for me. Cheers, and thank you again for your work!
My top 3:
1 - The Last Revelation
2 - Tomb Raider 2
3 - Tomb Raider
Ooh, same! :3
I forgot how awesome the music was in the early Tomb Raider games. In fact, this series has always had a solid OST.
Indiana Jones...
women don't play video games. not beeing sexist here, those are facts. 90% male.
I doubt her sexy image did sales any harm. Only raging feminist loonies would have the time or inclination to complain about it, and they all probably secretly lust after her anyway. If it caused any controversy it would only peak people's interest.
@@erdnussbier4260 Are women forbidden from using computers where you're from or what?

TRU was AMAZING, this guy is tripping! Clearly.
... the gameplay itself was good, even tho it wasn’t close to as classic TR game series.
I love this, almost an hour of quality content
Cheers!
all this complaints, i see it now but back then when i was buying this games i enjoy them all, i could not even find any flaws
I see the complaints but in my opinion I still don't see any flaws because I still enjoy them, that's what matters.
I did not mind the flaws, it is a game, not real life. It was fun, sometimes I think the old TR games were more fun, they had no options with map or hints, highlight stuff you should do. I know we can turn this off on the new ones or just not use hints, but...if you do not have the option you get frustrated, more invested to find out on your own and beat the game and that felt good.
exactly my thoughts, i hate complaining about technical stuff why can't they accept it as a game they enjoy playing
yeah thats called nostalgia it clouds the mind.
God I miss the old versions. I was obsessed and I still bloody love it. I names my middle kid lara in honour of it lol
Very cool!

I been playing the new trilogy this year. Even in 2020 - 2013’s tomb raider looks amazing. I’m on Shadow of the Tomb raider now. Friggin amazing graphics
All three games are amazing!
@@cido676 You had to read a bad comic to find out what really became of Juno though.

Chronicles is actually my favourite, probably because it's the first one I have ever played, but I have to say I still enjoy it😆
20:27 “One of the biggest changes of this edition was the removal of Lara’s face”
Thanks I hate it
maybe I'm just an old fart, but 1, 2 & 3 remain my favourite games of all time.
I could forgive the change in style, but the technical problems just made it feel like I was playing a beta release
. And with patches it was still fatally flawed (kinda hard to be immersive when Lara could just walk through walls because of non existent collision detection)
That being said, one can imagine my reaction to Anniversary...which provided the nostalgia I was holding on to with stunning visuals
great video retrospective - thank you for your efforts
What do you mean with "the best card for the original games"?
I play them on my gaming pc, with zero problems/glitches.
Im playing the first 1 on win7 on steam and have no problem at all, with the automated fix patch thing
You aren't old the old games are much better even with poor graphics and tanky controls
Potentially my favourite Tomb Raider game on the PlayStation. I'll have to replay it soon, alongside 1 and 3.
Tomb Raider was like the Legend of Zelda with guns, and a badass female lead;
ALSO FIGHTING A T-REX.

I miss the old Lara.
Me too...
Devinport wait why what's happened to her?
She's been shoved aside in favor of the more "grounded" Lara. What I don't think people realize is that Lara was an icon because she could do amazing things and had an air of charisma while doing it. The new Lara is fine to me, but classic just had more presence. Not to say she didn't have problems either, but there's a reason why most fans refer to her when they think of Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics did accomplish what they wanted, as the only thing the new and old Lara have in common is a name. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.
BlaxxShadow wait how are there two Lara's? Also, what made them so popular in the first place, since I don't know much of the franchise to begin with
@@BlaxxShadow I loved Old Lara's devil may care no fucks given attitude.

They love female empowerment.
I feel you !!
Finish part 2 your life will be complete, it's not hard, it's rewarding.
I finished TR2 without cheats or walkthroughs over several years. I dont think many people can say that beat any of them tbh..
It came up in my suggested feed, and I thought it was a great video!
