    Love it! The farmers I speak to have difficulty with the marketing aspect of the farm, since producing their product is their passion and expertise. The appearance of the booth is SO important, especially since someone who is further from farm life has that big picture perfect grocery selection in the back of their mind. It takes only a few seconds to see if this is a booth you want to stop and take a closer look at! Thanks for the vid!

    Your 100% right presentation plays a huge role,,,

    Am definitely going to use the recipe ideas,,,when I hit the local markets.

    Thanks friend. We all know WHAT we like, but don't know WHY we like it. Your video was an excellent mirror exercise, useful in many other areas of life. My first year "marketing" was a super success and quite gratifying. I started by advertising on Yard Sale websites to "Be On The Lookout....what was coming in a month!" I plan on adding very simple (and simply packaged) home made soap and hand sewn market bags to my heirloom, non gmo, organic tomatoes, okra, peppers, etc. Last year was additionally successful in that I was able to expose myself as a seasoned gardener and trusted source for info on how to care for the plants I was selling. The Amish sell in our community and are a super resource. Utilize what's around you,and don't be a snob! You can always learn more!

Thomas Jefferson advocated, to get into the least foreign entanglements possible. Industrialization had its place. But subservient to a farm. And every man should own land. So that his labor remained on his land 1799.

    i go to my local farmers market here in mid Michigan and most vendors are pathetic. why do I see alot of fruits and veggies with the "number code" stickers on them like they got them at a store and are re selling them. I don't get it. maybe I'm wrong, but when I go to a farmers market, I expect every seller selling their food was grown by them and preferably organic. I've asked the simple question numerous times, "are these veggies sprayed with anything?" and the answer is usually, " I don't know for sure." wtf. next. if any vendor cannot answer any questions you might have and don't feel offended by them, move on till you find one you can trust.

    Hi John, great videos. I'm trying to learn about the logistics of bringing frozen chickens to the markets and sitting there for 5-6 hours. Do you just bring large coolers? If your goal is 20 chickens, that means bringing 25, right? Just hoping to get close parking? Have you run into any regulation in your area in regards to bringing in the frozen chickens or precessing the chickens at all - as long as its done by the processing plant, no issues? Also, would you be willing to do a video specifically on your operations manual and show how it actually looks in print, many of your videos are great on the white board, but you mention you put it to print, what does that look like? I can rattle off how we do things, but to put it to paper is challenging. Thanks!

    How about some photos of your farmers market stand? Brandino brings up a good point but obviously the idea is to sell and be busy. Not talk to someone for 30 minutes while everyone waits. Hopefully you're in a market that is busy enough to allow you lots of sales.

    I haven't read down to far however I haven't found anything about food handling licenses? do you have to get any of that or does it depend on where you are selling?

    • @farmmarketing
      @farmmarketing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Toni Franklin Usually depends on where you're selling and what you are trying to sell. If you want to cook and hand out samples you might need a license. If you're just selling vegetables raw then you might not. Depends on your area and your product. The market manager should know the rules for your market.

    I went to a farmers market and this one man selling hog meat was making free BBQ, and people were always surrounding his booth. He’d give a little brochure of his BBQ recipe for every purchase. Obviously more costs cutting into his profits but I’m sure he has a ton of repeat orders.

    I have found that my local markets are extremely expensive to become a vendor...its like being shaken down before I even sell a single item? All the advertisements, signage, banners, tents, fees, and time becomes impossible to recoup for a small producer. Frankly, most farmers markets are for high volume sellers.

    • @farmmarketing
      @farmmarketing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BeeFriendlyApiary They can very a lot depending on your area and the market. I hear you though. Some markets can be a real challenge. That needs to be built into your business plan. My market isn't bad at all and has been really supportive of farmers joining. Marketing and selling your goods is a skill that's developed over time like a lot of other farm skills.

      Amanda Mackey That is a lie... Seeds are cheap, dirt is free, grass clippings are free, tree leaves are free, shit is free if you have animals, worms are cheap, water is free it falls from the sky literally. I will have 20 heads of cabbage, 30 ears of corn, 3 70lb containers of spuds, 1 container of ginger, 20 large onions, 20 large garlic heads, 50 or so turnips which i can eat the greens of also. 20 or so artichokes, 20 eggplants, a couple hundred tomatoes, fresh lettuce i grow all year round in door, 10 gold beats, 10 deep purple beats & 10 chioggia beats, countless pole beans, i grow bean sprouts, wheat grass and a bunch of other herbs inside all year round, 10 bell pepper plants and 10 hot pepper plants... I grow morel mushrooms & shiitake mushrooms, parnips, assorted colorful carrots, bak choy etc etc and i literally grow thousands of pounds a year in veggies for basically just the price of the seeds alone and never even go to the grocery store ever.

      The reason ..chiefo..
      Is cause in the 20 th century poeple barely ate. There was no sugar, no, salt,. There was um??...No sodas all over the place, on and on.
      1975- 1980. I Cleary remember ,eating a plate of food no bigger than a fist. Then, that went on to like, 1980 s when poeple began to eat more. But there was no food
      All over the place solid, to like 95. Up to then a soda machine was it, at a gas station store or anywhere. There was tons less sugar and salt everywhere.
      There was just less food. Most poeple were skinny.they didn't want food all the time. And it was not addicting. so that's where you get your poor comment.
      But from 95 till today you can't drive 5 blocks without food. Also there was only 180 million poeple here in 88.
      Today 350 million. All over weight. plus ethonal, which swallows corn left and right. There was no ethonal in the 80 s. Plus most crops are soy. For all this sodas. On and on. You add that up, a guy with 15 acres does great. Because poeple, can't stop f eating....
      Is really the bottom line. You would of starved in 1985. You would not have even broke even
      But today the avg caloritic consumption far and away passes 2000.
      Plus??... What happens?? When China opens up. How about cuba??..7 million more mouths.
      6 billion ppl in the world. So of course the farmer even if half his place fails. He's making 100 k.

    You drain every bit of fun out of the system - it's a farmers market - it's supposed to be laid back and easy going, a good product and a friendly person will sell itself. People become very loyal. Also, having several people gathered around is a selling point, it points people to the fact that it must be good stuff. You do NOT want them in and out.
