    Hey "Dr." Georgia, salicylic acid is named after _Salix_ spp. because that's where it was first isolated from. _Salix_ is the genus of *Willow* trees, not "Poplar" trees. A _real_ scientist would know her subject. An honest person would know it _before_ arguing against it.

    How can you be a sinner, without the concept of sin? I never knew about sin until I went to Catholic school at 7. I thought it was the silliest thing I ever heard. I'm a sinner, because 2 jokers ate an apple. Right. But, aren't you a sinner too? So, how do I know you're telling the truth. Believe me, I knew about lying, my mother was horrible at it. And she tried to get me to do it too. But I had autism & was a total failure at it. Of course, I didn't know I had autism until recently, & it does make it difficult for you to lie.

      No her ridiculous take on it is & the doctrine of original sin is quite the worst thing to come out of Christianity & at the time Augustine of Hippo came up with it there where other fathers of the church who disagreed with him. For myself I don't think any one is born evil just in need of being socialised which some have more trouble with than others due to personality disorders & the like. Children have to learn and need supporting and guiding as they do not condemning as wicked sinners, most naughtiness is best understood as the child testing boundaries and learning there from.

    WAIT WAIT WAIT...
    So, we are perfectly conceived, but formed by god in the womb, but born sinful & evil, but the bible/Jesus said that children are innocent, that we should seek the innocence of a child, but we are not pure until our sins are forgiven/we are baptized... Longest contradiction in the entire book. 😒

      Wait, ok, so... god created us to be food for him, but being so busy writing all those genetic codes he made a typo & instead ended up making us sinners... ...& then couldn't be bothered to go back & edit the results of his sloppy all-nighter 'cos he wanted to sleep in on Sunday. Maybe that's why he had that thing for sacrificing first-born children? Idk, maybe they're tastier than middle-children...
      Meh, makes as much sense as getting stroppy that some of his pets weren't doing exactly what he wanted & drowning everything in a petulant tantrum.

    lol.Georgia: "scientists found children start gaining their sense of morality around three years old."Ken: "Exactly. it's just like what the bible says. we are born with a sense of morality 'written on our hearts.'"
    but...if we are born with it, why does it not present itself until the age of three?
    also, I would suggest Ken look up cases of children who are(horrifically) raised in virtual isolation, and who _don't_ develop a sense of morality, and even after being reintroduced/integrated back into society, and undergoing types of therapy and education, still have bog problems with morality, sympathy/empathy, putting themselves in other people shoes, etc.

      I would also question any study that concluded that "children start *gaining* their sense of morality" instead of "displaying a sense of morality". Gaining implies that it is innate rather than learned, and I'm extremely skeptical of that premise.

    • @Krikenemp18
      @Krikenemp18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's almost like that's the age where children are capable of starting to learn morality from their parents... but that doesn't confirm the bible so it can't be true!

      The first skeleton found was of an old man with rheumatism so, at first, they believed they were all hunched over like that, but they soon found out otherwise. Popular culture often lags behind current scientific knowledge, depictions of brontosaur-ans are still common even though it has been known for some time that they never existed.

    21:08 "I've read these articles where they try to justify homosexual behavior in humans by saying we see it in animals."
    No Ken, we don't need to justify this behavior, you don't need to justify something that doesn't cause harm. This point is brought up to counter the Christians saying that homosexuality is unnatural by pointing out that it does in fact happen in nature. That's not the same thing as saying it's okay because animals do it. Never trust Ken to accurately report what someone else said.

      I think it’s because some Biblical myths are often categorized as “just so stories.” The Creationists superior logical response is “I know you are, but what am I?”
      Compare: “The rainbow is a covenant from God that he won’t destroy the world with water again.” - typical “just so story”
      “The rainbow is caused by light from the sun refracting through water droplets in the air after a rainstorm.” - an “evolutionist” or “scientism” “just so story?”
      I’ve wondered if light behaved differently before Noah’s flood in their world view?

    "But they're still bacteria." Bacteria comprise a Domain in biological taxonomy. If a Biblical "kind" is a domain, one has to wonder why the ark was so big. Noah and his wife belong to the Domain Eukarya, which covers all living things that have cells with nuclei, including plants (which, you might remember from fifth grade biology, comprise a Kingdom). I assume Mr. and Mrs. Noah's gut flora would take care of the Bacteria, and also possibly the Archaea.

    Homo neandertalensis >ARE< fully human, just not _modern_ humans (Homo sapiens). They are a separate, previously co-existent, extinct human species, sister to our own, and there appears possibly to have been some (limited) interbreeding once our ancestors began to colonize the areas where Neanderthals had evolved from our mutual ancestor species, Homo heidelburgensis (as opposed to where our species evolved in isolation from them in Africa). It is worth noting that H. heidelburgensis are _also_ fully human in that same sense, as are cousin species such as H. florensis. H. sapiens is >NOT< the only "human" species, merely the only one to _survive_ to the modern day.

    Here's something I've never understood: If, as the bible states, that the heart is desperately wicked and deceitful above all things then how are we supposed to be able to trust any moral law contained therein? For all that creationists know, any moral law written upon the hearts of men could've been put there by the devil rather than God.
    Edited to add: I find it funny that Ken Ham would say that there isn't anything in the bible about eating human flesh, when there is in Deuteronomy. Which confirms my suspicions that he never read his own bible or never understood had he read it.

    • @zemoxian
      @zemoxian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the sin is supposed to be in their soul not necessarily their behavior. It’s something you can’t escape from like a curse. Before eating from the tree Adam and Eve were innocent. After... all Earth broke loose and Eden was off limits. So we all live with the aftermath of what two people did at the beginning of time that they would not have done if they had the knowledge gained be doing what they did.
      That’s about how much sense it makes to me.

    • @catelynh1020
      @catelynh1020 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on different denominations, the sin comes into play at different times. I won't even try to remember which is which, but some denominations say there's an "age of reason" after which kids can't be ignorant of sin and thus the sins start to accumulate. Another says that babies are born with sin, which is why even stillborn babies need to be baptized.
      That's why it's really hard to discuss religion with christians--everyone has the same book but ends up with a completely different understanding.

    It's kind of true that Neanderthals were human - if they were alive today we would recognise them as just another population of humans. However, that's not to say that we can't use genomics to see that they're distinguishable from us modern humans. Basically, if they were alive today, they would be the most different human group, but still human.
    I ilke that you pointed out the unfasifiability in Ham and Purdom's comments on the infant morality story. Any study that talks about our innate sense etc right and wrong etc will be taken as evidence that the law is written on out hearts, while any study that talks about people being innately selfish etc will be taken as evidence of our sin nature. Heads they win, tails we lose. It's completely unfalsifiable.

      If we interbred with Neandertals, then they and we are the same species, pretty much by definition.

    • @letstrytouserealscienceoka3564
      @letstrytouserealscienceoka3564 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In nature, there really is no such thing as a species, and the interbreeding thing is only one of the traits we use to distinguish between what we classify as species. Our definitions are not absolute, there are plenty of creatures that we classify as different species that can interbreed and still procreate. If we had a sample from every generation since Australopithecus we would not be able to tell when one species ends and another begins or when exactly when splits occurred. Evolution is that gradual. Fossilization is so rare that it makes it easy for us to classify finds as different species, most of the time. The modern notion of clades more closely matches nature, it doesn't make hard separations like the species notion does but relies on basic common genetic traits, it is more about how we are alike than about how we are different. Homo neanderthalensis is a distinct creature, it began to separate from our lineage around 700,000 years ago and was fully distinct by about 350,000 years ago, well before what we now call homo sapiens evolved. They were different enough that we can still recognize their genes in us some 30,000 years after the last of them lived.

      @michaelsommers2356 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      _"In nature, there really is no such thing as a species, ..."_
      True enough, but that means that you not only can't say that two populations are the same species, you can't say they are different species, either.
      _"... there are plenty of creatures that we classify as different species that can interbreed and still procreate."_
      Kindly cite an instance where two populations not only can, but _do_, interbreed but are still considered separate species.

      Three words, African Killer Bees. They are a successful (e.g. fertile) inter species interbreeding of an African bee with the honeybee, and they are coming soon to a hive near you. Cattle and bison produce fertile beefalo. Another example from the wild is the Polar Bear / Grizzly hybrid (again, fertile), the Grolar Bear. Red wolves are actually a coyote / wolf hybrid that is common in nature.
      If you meant something where the fertile offspring are one species or the other, that doesn't happen. In the given cases a new, third species results. Your evolution dollars at work! These hybrids are cases of rapid, large scale evolution, as opposed to the kind of changes that normally happen in every generation, eventually resulting in what we would call new species.
      Also review the phenomenon of "ring species" where one species splits into two physically separate populations and each one evolves into new species several times. Each of the two end species can interbreed with the original one (and all of the others in its line) but not with each other. The "if they can interbreed then they are the same species" assertion simply isn't true. It is true however that if two specimens can't interbreed then they are definitely different species. But like I said, nature itself doesn't impose any rules about what makes two plants or animals different species because the very concept of species is a human invention, and a poorly defined one at that. I do not think that attempts to better define what makes two specimens belong to different species will ever meet with much success because nature simply does not play by our rules.
      I did enough research to know that there are many instances of inter species interbreeding among plants but I think the examples already given should suffice.
      Evolution is happening with every generation of every living thing and eventually there will be a generation that cannot interbreed with an ancestral generation and thus is clearly not the same species as its ancestors, without there ever having been any inter species interbreeding. Humans are great apes, and old world monkeys, and ..., and vertebrates, and ..., and eukaryotes, and ...

    This makes me SUPER uncomfortable but, I just gotta say it:
    WE DO, kinda, try to eat our moms, 1ST THING, when we r born...
    After all, WE DO drain her body of nutrients - through her breasts. We actually take part of our Mom into our mouth, immediately upon our 1st meeting. Then, FOR MONTHS, we greedily utilize all of our strength &effort &focus to gorge ourselves while simultaneously depleting her.
    Now, SURE, we moms instinctively consume more &our body naturally makes EXTRA of everything to make up for MOST of it. Of course, our babies CAN only eat us if we give ourselves to them, &we CAN (to some extent,) choose how much we consume. So, usually, there's enough left over, to keep us nourished, as well. AND, if neccessary ,we COULD always cut our baby off, at any time, if we started feeling depleted.
    BUT - no matter how much nature &culture has evolved this inborn, cannibalistic urge, turning it into a beautiful, emotionally bonding &loving experience that benefits our entire society - a breastfeeding a baby IS, essentially, "eating" his/her mother. In the same way, a vampire, or parasite, "eats" it's victims.

    A person who behaves well and does good things without rules coming from without (God, whoever) is less evolved morally than the person who doesn't need the rules spelled out (especially the 10 Commandments!). This tripe about "you can't have morality without God". Who said so? Religion. Who is moral? Lots of people doing good. Sorry you need to be told those basics. Again, it's just the Bible, because you believe it with no thought, because its obedience, faith....but not evidence. Those highs you think are Jesus? They could be from anything. Um, the concept of "fair" is unique to English-speaking cultures. It doesn't really exist in other languages - they don't have an equivalent word to describe the concept. I think my favorite example of this was a guy whose kids were bi-lingual (English and Polish) would actually use the English word "fair" in an otherwise completely Polish sentence when complaining that something wasn't "fair." The father (who was a linguist) explained that the reason they did that was because "fair" is a concept unique to English and there's no real word for it in Polish.
    I don't remember the name of the paper. It was part of the assigned reading for my Linguistic Anthropology class. But basically, there's a lot of assumptions based on language and culture that native English speakers make when they do studies that are cross-cultural as well as developmental.

    Ken Ham is always very down on people he calls "Evolutionists". Well, I've just invented a term to describe Ken and those who share his beliefs on the topic - "PAN-evolutionists". This stands for "Post Ark Narrative - Evolutionists" for they believe all those "kinds" went on to diversify (in only a few thousand years) after the flood. So, they do believe in evolution - it's just after the ark.

    I thought we’re born sinful because eating forbidden fruit transmits the knowledge of good and evil (genetically?) somehow. Also, because of this, Mary was made sinless before Jesus was conceived to make his conception immaculate. Isn’t that the reason the Jesus human sacrifice story is supposed to work? So Jesus can be the sacrifice to save 5 year old sinners?

    I wonder whether Ohio State University has any "Code of Conduct" for its PhDs? Usually you get a PhD for a work in the scientific field. You need to show with your work that you are able to do science. That you understood the scientific method. But afterwards? If it shows in your words and writings later on that you have not understood the simplest methods of research, that you have not understood, how theories build up on evidence? Then you have proven that your PhD is worthless and should be taken away from you again, right? It falls back onto the universities if they don't care what people do with their PhDs later on.
