I absolutely *love* that even after all these years, Mortal Kombat didn't lose it's soul.
It's still got the same over-the-top, silly, awesome, hardcore themes that it had way back in the day. I'm so happy.
This honestly gives these characters more character depth - they're not just pure killing machines, they still have their own little soft-spots inside underneath their tough exteriors

The return of Friendship was probably the best addition to Mortal Kombat 11.
Hope they bring it back for MK1.
I'm just gonna say it: It's refreshing to see the characters not kill each other for once.
Which is exactly why the Friendships were added to the series in the first place. Ed Boon and the team felt the games were a bit too grim, violent, and depressing, so they wanted to lighten the tone somewhat.
I always thought MKTriology had a lot of comedy in it. The brutalities were especially dumb because after your opponent explodes, you'll see more than one rib cage, three skulls and more bones that are in the human body.

@Bellatrix Raiden debuted as a self serving god, but then became the mentor character...with some edgy dark Raiden bit (like a comic issue). Lui Kang had his edge lord turn around much later in the series as well. Johnny Cage, Sonya, and Jax have been "da good guyz" from conception.
Then there are the jobber villains, a champion beastman, and then the big bad with his sorcerer apprentice.
