- An Effective way to hone cylinders on your engine. Whether Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Mercury, Lincoln, GM, GMC, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, Lexus. Well you get the point. Honing your engine is very important for ring break in. You should always consult a professional and stay safe with power tools. Small block fords, big block fords, small block chevy, big block chevy, small block Chrysler, Big Block Chrysler. Mopar engines are welcome to this information as well.
Take that spring hone and throw it in the trash along with the ball hone. Not worth a F. They only make a messed up hole a bigger messed up hole. You need a guided hone such as a sunnen to correct any taper or out of roundness. There’s even a decent Lisle guided hone available for cheap. Those spring hones are a great way to ruin a bore.
I didn't want to hurt the internet Einstein's feelings... LMAO Glad you did!!
@@Transient901 I mean I hate to rip on a fella working with what he’s got but seems the internet thinks these hones are the proper tool. They’re only somewhat acceptable to deglaze a bore that’s in tolerance, as im sure you know... just wish people would quit posting spring/ball hone videos as “how to” videos as the procedure is often totally incorrect... no hate on OP.
@@FlatBroke612 Huge difference between honing and deglazing. As I said, this subject is intense, deep and ripe with theory that literally takes years of boring and honing to actually and accurately resize cylinders to even begin to understand.
@@Transient901 yep
Even at mechanic school they only used those ball hones.
Tells you to spray it all over so it doesn't pool, but does the whole job with the cylinder almost horizontal. If there was only a way to have the cylinder vertical to both allow a more uniform distribution of lubricant/cleaner and to allow the residue to drain out.
ive got an even better way of doing it. run a hose with running water while your doing it and use a squirt of dish soap and the stones never clog. the stones never seem to wear that way either. water and soap clean the bore as you hone it and can literally be wiped dry and some atf on a rag to coat the cylinder to prevent flash rust and your good to go. i find oils turn into grease with metal shavings and clog stones. believe it or not you can also dry hone a cylinder ive done it and it seems to work faster but the stones wear out faster but it actually leaves a better finish.
you're right brother
I reckon so too. Another important point many don't mention is the cross-hatch angle to achieve, so one may to get the right drill speed combined with the speed of shoving it in and out.
Correct, but Uncle Tony uses gasoline.
Water works good.
depend on what purposes....if normal daily drive, point A-B....it acceptable.....if for Street Race or High Octane... better do the right way.....
change the Fresh Stone for each Cylinder....
Only time you use that or a ball hone is at the dragstrip after you melted a piston and you have to fix before the next round. Otherwise, find a Sunnen or Haas machine and do it right. Sonny Leonard, Pat Musi, Reher & Morrison, will ONLY use a ball hone if they have to.
I have achieved a better cross hatch with 60grit sandpaper and my hand than with the adjustable hones.
Use a coffee can or ? full of 90wt gear oil for your hone. Toss the spray oils, they are too light.
Recommend using cooling oil for cutting threads. Let the stone soak overnight in oil before using it. Do not use WD40, water, brake cleaner etc.
Any liquid works....
You could spit or piss on it even
I’m assuming this is a shop not a diy job if so ignore this. What shop is Honing cylinder walls without a Boring Mill
everyone is an expert? I have used 400 grit sandpaper and was my best motor job so far. Burns less oil than when new.
Uncle Tony hones with gas, not oil. And he says to only use these 3-stones, never a dingleball hone. And your drill RPM is WAY too fast to get the proper 60-degree pattern SLOW TF DOWN
Uncle Tony is an idiot. Showing people the right way to ruin and destroy stuff for years. This video just repeats it.
Thank you for the info!! What do you recommend for piston gap? Stock specs? Thanks
Generally, a top ring gap of at least 0.004-inch per 1 inch of cylinder bore is sufficient on a normally aspirated street engine. If you do the math on a typical small-block that has been bored 0.030 inch over, (0.004 x 4.030) you'll find that a top ring gap of 0.016 inch is what to use.
@@fireintheholeagain thanks for the info and feedback 👍🏼 what if I was planning to add turbo in the near future? Should I add a slightly bigger gap?
@@TubeInspire Depending on how much boost your running. On big boosted applications I would say .006 to .009 thousandths extra Gap to be on the safe side. If your going to start naturally aspirated. I would run 5 to 6 thousandths extra Gap if you're unsure about boosting an engine in future. Because if you Gap it too much and decide not to put forced induction on it then it's going to have less mileage before the rings wear and you'll eventually have blow by in certain cases. Nitrous oxide it's best to have cast rings but that's for more extreme measures of a race engine but others do run chrome moly rings for race cars as well.
@@fireintheholeagain 👍🏼 thanks for the feedback
to bad it's not honing, that is a glaze breaker. all it does is remove the oil glaze from the cylinder.
Omg finially someone else that can read that packaging!
This is more for de-glazing rather than honing
Thats a cylinder deglazing tool not a honing tool
Honing
No it’s not , it’s a hone. Simply a large version of a lifter bore or brake cylinder hone
Don't be cheap and pay a good machine shop to do it right and get the correct crosshatch angle.
Seen a thousand of Chevy small block and head gasket job
may I known what mean this special tool.please
Take some 80 grid diamond sand paper, glue it on something round, put it into a drill and grind that cylinder like crazy. Drill a bigger diameter holes for rod bearings etc. and make an oil change with the thikest oil possible. Like 30w80 or something. All my customers get a warranty for 5 minutes.😄👍
Always lubricate the tool ❤❤❤❤!! It will love back ❤❤❤❤
So, just watching the video, it’s clear that the tool is not being held centered to the bore. The top stone is hanging out of the top while the bottoms stones are 1/2” inside the bore. That means you are aiming up hill.
Best bet, if you are looking to break a glaze with one of these things, is to orient the bore vertically, and get the thing centered. Adjust the spring for light contact, and have your drive motor going SLOW.
What type of fluid are you spraying into the cylinder?
Me and my friend used wd 40 big blast and we haven't had any issues.
@@thedogeater2269 oh ok bro… thanks 💯💯💯
You’re having a laugh, that’s not a suitable tool for honing a bore, find someone with a Delapena, Serdi or Sunnen, you’re just going to ruin a block using that.
That's not a hone, that's a glaze breaker
Those spring hones aren’t worth a shit. Not enough spring force to hold itself to the cylinder.
The spring is adjustable bud
Wow I can't believe this just use the damn knock or loose lubricant wash whatever you want to call it hone the damn thing and stop talking about it
This subject is a little too complicated for any video.
Amen
Not really it's a simple procedure IF you use the right tools....
Why not just go to machine shop have it done.
It's not expensive honestly
Oh yeah honestly I paid $150 to have my Toyota 2 l block honed. That's four cylinders 150 bucks. Thank you very much. Cheap!
Where did you get that hone? I have a 78mm bore that I need to clean up
That's a deglazer
It’s a HONE
First of all. You shouldn’t be using penetrating oil. Cutting oil or tranny fluid is all.
hone one handed. The best method 😭
I might do a master cylinder that way, my engine ?.....um no
Thats not a hone, thats a glaze breaker, a hone is a precision tool that can hold very close tolerances....
No, it’s a hone. A large version of a lifter bore/brake cylinder HONE. A dingleberry could be called a glaze breaker , I call it trash.
@@RacingRon47 you don't know what a real hone is if you think that piece of shit is capable of giving a nice straight cylinder, a real Hone can hold .0002" top to bottom...
Machine Name and Price ?
That's for glaze only not honing. Also use honing oil not that crap
It’s literally a hone. Clearly you’ve never used a brake cylinder or lifter bore HONE, as they are mini versions of this cylinder hone.
me I would skip all that and send it to a shop that has the tools and the skills to do the work
This is a jock ,folks he,s a backyard ..mechanic,will work in a rush ,wrong way 2 do it,over all tho,,
That's a glaze breaker not a hone
Best way to wreck cylinders
Gasoline works best
Uncle Tony uses gasoline!
That is the worst possible thing you can use on a cylinder oh hell no
You all realize this is a comedy based channel …right ?
Watch the other videos. You’ll understand. He’s just gettin views. That’s all. 😊
You should see Uncle Tonys Channel...theirs some great comedy 🤣
I don't see any comedy in the vids they all seem serious and some things I've heard from too many "mechanics" so idk where the satire is
Makes sense. Aside from the tool being used, he is starting and stopping the tool within the cylinder. Total fuck job... Unless it's for comedic likes.
I would say get the ball type hone or a lyles
Bottle hone and Wd40 is the way
I have a better tip. Don’t do what he does. Take your block to a competent machine shop and have it done correctly. You will thank yourself later.
Most of us cant afford to get a block machined and these have been used for decades if used correctly they do just fine
@@nastilyasperated2215 If you can't afford to do things correctly you should rethink why you are doing it. Using a hone like this is fine in some instances, but you would have to use it correctly. He does not. That is why I said don't do what he does.
@@nastilyasperated2215 Anyone, and I do mean ANYONE that says these are for honing is WRONG! These are for deglazing the cylinder wall BEFORE HONING with a real honing tool.
Using a deglazing tool will make any out of round or taper condition worse.
This is rage bait
Just spend 20 bucks and do the job correctly
Disregard
You all Need JESUS!!!!❤✝️🙏🤲🙌
