Yes, I agree 100%. More and more people are realizing the same, that life is about freedom and adventure, and are going out of the cities. I love that and I believe that it is the way to change the world and free ourselves.
At the age of 44, we moved to Alto Alentejo, Portugal in October 2002. We rented initially, buying our house in June 2003 completing it's renovation within the first year. We moved back to the UK temporarily in 2005, resumed working and saving, before moving back to Portugal permanently in April 2013. Still here, poorer, infinitely happier and healthier. Britain seems so much worse now than then, whereas Portugal just seems to get better year after year. We'll never, ever go back. I'm 66 this year and will never leave our Alentejan home and life in Portugal.

Come to Australia, no language barrier, blue skies nearly every day, beautiful beaches...choose your temperature environment ranging from very cold to tropical to semi arid to arid. We have it all. Anywhere off the coast and away from the big cities is very affordable. Come visit first but plan to spend at least a month. Australia is a huge place and you need to experience a lot of zones. Recommended in Late Spring (ie your late autumn) Land in Hobart...Tasmania trip around for 5 days followed by Victoria... spend a week crossing towards the Victorian and South Australian border to Mildura. Then across to the wine country in South Australia (The Barossa). On the way visit Lake Mungo with its sand lunets...amazing. Travel back through the outback (only) a day either side. ...visiting Broken Hill, heading back east to Dubbo then up through the back highway to Toowoomba. Fly north to the Atheton tablelands, see Rockhampton then fly back home from Brisbane. You will have experienced all of the zones in this trip and will have seen about 15% of the country. Just make sure you do it outside the Rainy seasons of winter and summer. Winter in the cooler regions and summer in the hotter regions of Qeensland. This timelapse is incredible! Seeing your off-grid journey from start to finish is truly inspiring and showcases your dedication and resilience. Bravo for creating such a stunning homestead
The new reality on the New Earth is exactly what you are doing. I began mine in 2011 moving with my partner from Rome to my parents' small town in Sicily. My father's 4.3 hectare family farm had been in the family since the late 40s but it had been abandoned since 1986 and it appeared like a an overgrown forest of citrus, olive and pine trees, a den for foxes and reptiles of every species. Well, I cleared it all up spending a minimal amount and am continuing on this new life-path journey. Your soul will thank you!!
The grass under your trees will compete with the trees for nutrients as it regrows after every cutting session. Ultimately it will starve the trees. Best to mulch around the trees for their health and leave the grass longer all the way out to the drip-line as the feeder roots reach out past the canopy edge. Lovely animals!
If anybody thought homesteading was easy, this video is a good 'eye opener'! I lived in the midst of renovation and it is definitely a challenge....Youth on Your Side💖💚
You should look into building swails on your property that empty into a collection pond at the bottom of a slope. You can harvest a lot fo water this way in the rainy times and use it water and protect your property during hot seasons. If done correctly, you can make the swails around your trees, which offers them water longer as well.
If I were 40 years younger I would have loved to have followed in your foot steps. If only I had been as brave and if the internet had been around. Good luck to you.
I wish I had seen this sooner. I am a Mason. I do brick and Stone. A cake bag wouldn't have got that done so much faster. It looks just like a big frosting bag. You fill it with your mud ,fill in all the cracks, then go back and smooth out go back Wherever you bought the trawl and tuck pointer and ask if they have one. It will make this kind of job so much easier in the future.
the way I see people helping one another in these communities is amazing. the last few years I've had chronic fatigue syndrone and what i would give for even just an afternoon of a friends help. I hope people realise this communal helping mindset is needed everywhere, in the city too.
It is when one watches it like this that one can see how far you have come and how the property is coming together. The pile of floor rubble has now gone to secure your driveway, everything is used to make improvements. You must feel a great sense of achievement❤
Your animals are precious. Your little dog playing on the sand was like a kid.😅😅 this compilation of the build shows just how much hard work you both have put into this. You’ll have this record to share and remember in years to come. Congratulations
I had forgotten all that you had done and all you had been through. You both have worked very hard. A special shout out to Nick and his wife, they are honest and good people. May you both live in joy and satisfaction.
Congratulations you are now living the Portuguese life, can't be more in this case, own wine, own eggs and chickens, mostly just taking care of things with no stress and reaping the health benefits of making your own food, olive oil everything! very happy to have you guys and glad i found this channel!
"The only thing we'd ever built was a shed on our allotment and that shed then blew away" 🤣I've been there! Thanks for sharing your incredible journey!
Whew, how inspiring and persistent you’ve both been! I’m an old artist and chef who bought property in the mountains with a derelict cabin so I can relate to the amount of work restoration and rebuilding requires. To have the life you want is so worth the sacrifice.
what a great way to look back and see everything you have achieved over the years, whether or not you felt you were not ready to take it all on what a success for you both. you have gained knowledge, property, a great following, friends, a special uncle, saving furry friends and a fantastic home off grid. looking forward to enjoying your continuous journey at what lies ahead. thank you and congratulations to you both.
Your neighbor selling you that land for so little given he never planned on selling is just another example of how welcoming and nice almost all Portuguese people ive met are. So happy to see y'all pull this off.
I had a big beautiful vegetable garden and chicken’s. I was having issues with garden pests and eventually I built the (long) chicken run running around the perimeter of my veggie garden area. The run was about 4 feet wide and acted as a chicken forcefield. It actually worked really well ha ha. The chooks obviously scratched freely during the day, but when they were in the chicken run, any bug wanting wanting to get into the garden had to either climb over or run the gauntlet of my chicken army. I miss that old garden, but I know that it is still going strong and being looked after ❤ Thanks for sharing your adventures and for bringing back nice memories for me.
I have learnt over the years ( not a builder by trade) if you do concrete etc my cat will always leave prints in it , it’s their sign of approval, love the channel still playing catch-up ❤️😻
Fun trip down memory lane. This is also a reference point for you when things get tough and you wonder just how you can go on, you can look back and say we did it then, we can do it again.
What a wonderful catch up and proof of how well you have both done in the last two years with of course 'Uncle' Nicks help, we all need a Nick in life. My favourite is the Kitchen Nook thing! Well done guys.
I was introduced to you both by Bee and Theo .. they visited and looked through your garden. My goodness, you have come a long way since then Uncle Nick is an wonderful mentor to have close by. I have seen you grow and change, adapt to the realities of a completely new life and you have both done so well. Looking forward to seeing what happens next ❤️❤️❤️
'And being Welsh we are pretty good at being cold', favourite line. It would be scary being in another non english speaking country as it was. This was inspiring to watch. Hello from Australia !!
I really love this guys .You have come such a long way and it is so beautiful to watch the transformation ❤❤ We love you and Molly sends kisses to Albi the wonderful cat
You really are a resilient couple What a labour of love that kitchen. Love to see your animals interact . Congratulations on all your achievements, well done👏👏👏👏
Looks amazing, I would suggest creating swales or a small wetland so your always have water and would really help keep the soil moist that would be amazing too watch 😅❤
For a young lady , you are amazing , I also restore and renovate all my needs , it’s very rewarding well done to you both. you are great to your animals as well !! Well done , plett SA ❤
I don’t usually watch recaps when I’ve been a constant viewer…. This was lovely to watch and I felt your accomplishments! Well done and thanks for taking us along.
Thank you so much for your catch-up story. I joined only recently and wasn’t able to get the big picture. What a journey you have had so far. Full of admiration for what you’ve achieved. Well done.
As far as pointing the rock walls, I saw someone using a pastry bag like people use to decorate cakes. You put the cement mixture in these bags that looks as if it has a point that you squeeze the bag and the cement comes out the small end.
I just found your story, so brave of you both to take on such an adventure. I am most moved by the kindness of people you have met, as well as your love for you furkids, especially the advert for the square company, so cute.
Clarissa seeing your Timelapse video made me realise that I’ve been following you since September/ October 2021 and what a difference you have made since then! I’m so thrilled to have seen what you did before I joined you. Absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work as I can’t wait for your next videos. ❤🤩
Wow thank you following us for so long! I loved looking back and seeing how far we’d come, and excited to see what we can achieve in the next 2 years ☺️ thanks for watching Edna x
It's so good to have a recap of your journey. I remember bit of it and so proud of just how much you have accomplished. Faced every challenge and come so far.
Although i have followed you since you arrived on the land it's nice to have a recap of what you have done and what you have learnt from uncle nick you can carry forward to when you renovate the other half as they say where i live BON COURAGE 🐱🐶🤗
I did the same 20 years ago in Spain and we had a great community who helped and taught us how to do this. Roofing BBQs where a highlight when everyone got together to help reconcrete and set the old tiles back on. Great days I now live in Cambodia and am wondering about buying an old house or building a new one. I enjoyed you video well done a great life but also you will have tough times. Stay together, 😍🤩
Clarissa your work on paper and your editing are both so fine. Keep it up. But to you and Ian I want you to know that after watching you for over a year now (I started watching from a plug in Project Portugal and then binge watching 3 years earlier this year), I do not reach for my kitchen faucet, shower or garden hose that I don’t think of what you guys do just to have enough water to survive. You are an inspiration and I should have told you so before now. This Timelapse really brought it home for me.
It hit me watching this that many of our ancestors worked this hard and had to be creative with solutions. They were our testament and were soundly married as a partnership was required for effective life. Its an amazing job you two. And oartly because of your work amd success we came to portugal too. Been here for a year now and loving it even if its hard somedays. Knowing you did it too, makes it worthwhile. Hugs xx
You both worked so hard, and it has paid off. It has been quite a journey thus far for sure. I look forward to seeing more of the journey. Your channel is one of my favorites on TH-cam. ❤
Wow !! Lovely new images, such hard working soles, so much achieved, absolutely riveting footage, could have been twice as long, some hilarious shots of sanding wood 🤣such a fantastic video, we are so privileged to have made friends with such Fantastic people ❤❤❤
I loved all of this. It’s such an incredible journey and you have come through and conquered so many challenges and set backs. It’s no wonder people want to help, you never expect it but you also never fail to appreciate the help either. It’s really a joy to watch you each week and this two year Timelapse was beautifully edited.
This is a wonderful vlog 🥰🥰 when you caught Frankie mid stretch I realized my 7lb chihuahua, Lily, has longer legs!! 🤣😜😁 That was a mighty impressive run!! ❤❤
What a video! You guys are amazing! So pleased we get to see all the amazing work you've done and very grateful TH-cam has let all our paths cross ❤ Hearing about your shed blowing away made us chuckle 😂😂😂😂 watching Iwan trying to put the snake in the bag.... 😬😬😬😬😬 Frankie in the water tank and the lake swim, so sweet! So pleased you were able to buy the land off your neighbour and keep this dream going! Also loved seeing Iwan abseiling into the well haha. Jon just shouted in the background 44 LITRES OF OIL! You guys did such an amazing job on the kitchen! Love seeing the garden and chicken area come to life and can't wait for the next video from this Timelapse review xxx (I was writing my comment in real time as I watched the video haha)
Ahhh diolch cariad for such a lovely comment guys, and glad our paths have crossed too, really hoping we can come visit next summer. It’s the best olive oil ever too! We’re on our last 5litres, hoping it’ll keep us going to November when we pick again ☺️ if we were to build a shed now after all we’ve learnt… 😆 it would be the envy of the allotment. Can’t wait to see where your project over this year, so cool to see you doing it in our beloved wales 🏴 xxxxxxx
I just started watching you guys last summer. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I'm hoping to retire in Portugal for good in a couple years when the wife retires. Would love to meet up ad have a glass of wine with you.
Well now, thank you for that video. I don’t usually like the recap videos but I thoroughly enjoyed that one. Great to see the early days. Well done you two👍🏻
Hello from our working farm in New Hampshire USA. I lived in northern England for three years, so I know what the climate is in Wales. What a challenge and adventure in moving to another country, especially a hot climate. You certainly landed on your feet. What a mess crossing borders! Having good neighbors and friends is so important. Well done to have come so far in constructing your new home. Our 350 acre family farm is 3rd generation. Grass fed beef- commercial hay- commercial logging. We built our home at the base of the farm, in the woods in 2016.It was a bit of a challenge, but nothing compared to what you both went through. By March 2020 we were prepared to hunker down through the pandemic and we continue to be sheltered away. Our rural town is small ( pop. 2,000) and we have strong community support. I look forward to following your progress. ~ Diane
Since you have got the space and lots of grass, having a chicken tractor might be a better option that a chicken coop. A chicken tractor is basically a chicken coop with wheels and no floor, that you move around the property so the chicken will be able to graze on fresh grass every time you move the tractor to a new spot in the property.
Great documentary! Very well done. When you got the kitchen finished and the floors tiled was when it really looked like home sweet home to me. You've put in a lot of hard work and it's been fun to see what you've accomplished. Best to all!
That's it exactly: building, farming, walking, animals. With this real life you can only be happy...also tired, aso. But mainly happy. Congregations dear Friends
never say sorry for your Not so great editing, Its your journey, could listen to your Narrating voice every day. Very calming. One of my best friends in high school was from Portugal
There’s a lot to be said for much simpler life. I’m enjoying your films and I wish you both the most success on redoing your home. Take good care of each other and God bless.
THAT WAS AMAZING... WHAT A JOURNEY. GLAD I FOUND YA ALL IN THE EARLY DAYS TO SEE ALL THE PROGRESS. WELL DONE, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER. THE HOMESTEAD IS QUITE THE HOME!! GOD BLESS.👍👍🙏🙏
Love your resilience, lived not too far away from where you are. It is hard work but still the life is worth while. One day you will be done with the building works. Still going to be hard work but what a life you will have. Good luck with your project.
I love watching your videos they are so calming usually watch at night when I'm winding down, you 2 are making a really good go of the farm it's coming together lovely and you work well as a team, congratulations. On your 50,000 subscribers and you will get loads more, its lovely to see all the animals playing while your working, well done guys keep the videos coming 🎉❤xxx
T y for recap. Events i do not know as I only just found you around the point of working on your driveway entrance. Very lovely pleasant to visit with you. Funny animals. Sweet
I forgot how recently Diogo joined your homestead. For your next Q&A, what is the status of purchasing the land behind, because, of course, you don’t have enough trees? 🙄 You two work so well together.
Wow what a walk down memory lane. I've been with you since about the 2nd half of your first year. I think Bee and Theo at the Indie Projects put me on to you. Oh that Christmas oh how my heart ached for you in your trials. Amazing you two are. Sat nite is my nite to be refreshed and soothed by your calm sweet videos. Thank YOU! ❤🎉😊
Congratulations on how far you have come with your renovation and improvements. You did not mention it but I presume that you did all your pointing and plastering with lime based mortar, lime being most able to breath, as needed with stone buildings.
Thank you! Nope, no lime here 😅 it’s not actually necessary for a building to breath as long as precautions are taken. If we were in a limestone area then we’d be tempted but the issues that come from lime far outweigh any positives, in our opinion, and in every local builder I’ve spoken to. Also, as an asthmatic, it affects my breathing so that’s probably the deciding factor 😅
I guys, this is Claude. I follow you since your beginning. I was then living in Paris, then the Algarve, then Asia, and now I am back in Europe before leaving to South America. Soon 50K followers, wow, CONGRATULATIONS ! You deserve it. Such a great work you have done. And you are proving that with love, anything can be achieved. I wish you a lot of success with you future. Take care guys. Lot's of love ❤☀
I’m very happy to have found you and I’m enjoying this first video that I am watching. Your first year was crammed full to the brim. Congratulations, you have worked and learnt so much. Thank you to you both for sharing your story.
Absolutely loved the video of your journey seeing it made me envious Frankie is a treasure love her to bits when she was rolling on the couch and showing her teeth a cheesy smile you have done heaps since you have moved to Portugal Nick and Andrea are a fabulous couple I also watch them thanks again regards Sharon greetings from Australia
1:03:28 Oh my gosh your poor leg and then the table fell apart. Sorry, I did laugh at the table falling apart. Your place is so awesome. I am moving from 1 1/2 acres with a 900 sq ft cottage to a 1/2 acre with a shed to be closer to my family. I am looking forward to making it into a homestead with chickens and a vegetable garden as well. I will continue to watch your adventures. Unfortunately, I am much older then you. It is wonderful you are so young starting your project.

Congratulations you are now living the Portuguese life, can't be more in this case, own wine, own eggs and chickens, mostly just taking care of things with no stress and reaping the health benefits of making your own food, olive oil everything! very happy to have you guys and glad i found this channel!
Am watching u from 🇨🇦 Alberta Canada it’s amazing to see you guys work together like a team. Keep up the good work.
"The only thing we'd ever built was a shed on our allotment and that shed then blew away" 🤣I've been there! Thanks for sharing your incredible journey!
Couldn't take my eyes off the screen, ❣
Continous🌬 Blessings To yew all....
Love it...absolutely love it♥️
Whew, how inspiring and persistent you’ve both been!
Yes huge progress but you should have used limemortar not cement to do the walls. And icing bags need mix that’s really runny to work. 🤗🤗👍
Was hoping someone would mention limemorter
I had a big beautiful vegetable garden and chicken’s.
I was having issues with garden pests and eventually I built the (long) chicken run running around the perimeter of my veggie garden area.
The run was about 4 feet wide and acted as a chicken forcefield. It actually worked really well ha ha.
The chooks obviously scratched freely during the day, but when they were in the chicken run, any bug wanting wanting to get into the garden had to either climb over or run the gauntlet of my chicken army.
I miss that old garden, but I know that it is still going strong and being looked after ❤
Thanks for sharing your adventures and for bringing back nice memories for me.
I have learnt over the years ( not a builder by trade) if you do concrete etc my cat will always leave prints in it , it’s their sign of approval, love the channel still playing catch-up ❤️😻
Yes I think you’re right! 😂 thanks for watching!
It made me worry the cat was going to try and clean it's paws and ingest the concrete. 😒
Fun trip down memory lane. This is also a reference point for you when things get tough and you wonder just how you can go on, you can look back and say we did it then, we can do it again.
Newcomer, here. So glad I happened across your channel. Luck to you both, and to everyone who helps you. What an upbeat, beautiful couple
What a wonderful catch up and proof of how well you have both done in the last two years with of course 'Uncle' Nicks help, we all need a Nick in life. My favourite is the Kitchen Nook thing! Well done guys.
Thanks so much Patrick!

I was introduced to you both by Bee and Theo .. they visited and looked through your garden.
My goodness, you have come a long way since then
Uncle Nick is an wonderful mentor to have close by.
Thanks so much guys, glad we’ve met you along the way ☺️ cuddles and treats to Mollie and a kiss from Albi xxx
I so so love this video
You guys did a wonderful job on everything 👏
You really are a resilient couple What a labour of love that kitchen.
Love to see your animals interact .
Congratulations on all your achievements, well done👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much!
Looks amazing, I would suggest creating swales or a small wetland so your always have water and would really help keep the soil moist that would be amazing too watch 😅❤
You guys work very hard to bring your homestead to where it’s at. God is good. Do not give up. ❤❤❤
It looked like that cat adopted you guys 😅 it is so sweet to see it with your doggy and how well they get along.
Thank you so much for your catch-up story. I joined only recently and wasn’t able to get the big picture. What a journey you have had so far. Full of admiration for what you’ve achieved. Well done.
Love carries you through…❤️💙🐾
As far as pointing the rock walls, I saw someone using a pastry bag like people use to decorate cakes. You put the cement mixture in these bags that looks as if it has a point that you squeeze the bag and the cement comes out the small end.
What a fantastic journey, arduous but pleasurable.
How beautiful to be able to travel with you following your achievements.
Congratulations 👍❤️😘💯
What a wonderful job you are an inspiration in so many ways thank you for sharing
Although i have followed you since you arrived on the land it's nice to have a recap of what you have done and what you have learnt from uncle nick you can carry forward to when you renovate the other half as they say where i live BON COURAGE 🐱🐶🤗
What a beautiful tribute to all of your accomplishments! God bless hard work and reaping the rewards❤❤
Stay together,
😍🤩
Amazing transformations! And gratitude to “uncle Nick” too! Really enjoy watching every week 😊
Carissa and Iwan, you have worked so hard on your home. I have watched you from the beginning… i loved reliving it with you❤️❤️
Thank you so much Carol! You’ve been with us the whole way! Your support means the world to us!
Hugs xx
I remember all these projects and am amazed that a year has passed! Time flies
It sure does!
Beautiful people ❤ great accent, I did not learn that one at school 😅 do my best to understand.
Have a good life ❤ !
You both worked so hard, and it has paid off. It has been quite a journey thus far for sure. I look forward to seeing more of the journey. Your channel is one of my favorites on TH-cam. ❤
Wow !! Lovely new images, such hard working soles, so much achieved, absolutely riveting footage, could have been twice as long, some hilarious shots of sanding wood 🤣such a fantastic video, we are so privileged to have made friends with such Fantastic people ❤❤❤
Thank you for the recap of your progress. Very enjoyable. I love your shelves. They are unique.
That was nearly perfect. I missed an intro to Diogo. I am looking forward to all the wonderful projects the next two years bring.
Ah thank you!!
Oh and Diogo gets found very early in part 2 😉
Thank goodness you made the leap!!!
💛💛
Thanks Patty!
never say sorry for your Not so great editing, Its your journey, could listen to your Narrating voice every day. Very calming. One of my best friends in high school was from Portugal
Just loved this! Look how far you've come and everything you've overcome! A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor ❤ cant wait for part 2 😊
Love that quote❤️
So inspiring! If I were 40 years younger I might try something similar (now 77). You have such a unique and handcrafted place. I love it.
And all the while your cats were mostly napping :) Smart little buggers 😊
What great two year re cap. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it

@@FrankieOffGridcan I just say how great Nick is to help and teach you all and me. Hes a man's man. Can do will do guy. Wish I had him.
Lovely video Clarissa! Excellent editing too! 😊😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank YOU! ❤🎉😊
Sounds so good. I want to move to Portugal. I'm glad you're saying the things y'all have dealt with
Really lovely reliving happy memories from your journey 😍
Thanks. By looking at this. I can see it was.a lot of labour and there's a lot more to come. Congratulations on a beautiful setup
I’m very happy to have found you and I’m enjoying this first video that I am watching. Your first year was crammed full to the brim. Congratulations, you have worked and learnt so much. Thank you to you both for sharing your story.
We are also very happy you found us! Thanks so much!
Absolutely loved the video of your journey seeing it made me envious Frankie is a treasure love her to bits when she was rolling on the couch and showing her teeth a cheesy smile you have done heaps since you have moved to Portugal Nick and Andrea are a fabulous couple I also watch them thanks again regards Sharon greetings from Australia
that was fantastic, i really enjoyed that.
Thank you so much Wendy!!
Huge progress, I hope you're proud of this😘
What a fabulous video❤
A very beautiful place to live where you can feel nature and free planting. This is freedom and peace of mind
Congratulations on first three years. Best wishes for the next three. Love from Cornwall ❤
Thanks so much Terry!
