Love the 427 small block Ford. Dart block with good heads and you have a lightweight and compact package with big numbers. Throw one in your Foxbody and watch it go !
I love this channel because it shows the average car guy all the little nuances of building a modified muscle car, almost nothing is plug and play and it takes a lot of experience, knowledge, patience to do it right, something as simple as putting in a 351w where a 302 stood isn't quite a bolt in deal when the 351 deck height is 9.5" vs 8.2" for the 289/302
You will be lucky if deck height is the only issue. The likelihood that motor mounts or getting the clutch, bellhousing, trans, driveline all bolting together is just not as smooth as to be a given. Something not much of an issue on a Chevy can be a different ballgame on a Ford.
@@gregorytimmons4777 Yep The 351W and 302 is uses different bell housing patterns depending on whick model small block you use and the much taller deck height on a 351w causes all kinds of issues in a chassis designed for the short deck, hence why Most people built a 347 or new frpp boss block with the big bore, 363+ other than a stonger stock block design the 347 is a easier way to go, i didn't list every issue but you get my point that its a good channel showing you cant just throw things together expecting things to just bolt right up, especially in a kit cobra jmo And ford interchangeability isnt the friendliest, like putting a 455 buick in a 350 buick car, lots to change over, hence why i love the Pontiacs i specialize in, same externally unless you use an after market block, some motor mount difference between years but overall pretty easy

Need to get a custom header kit for the cobra, they allow you to build them out of plastic segments them lock them in place and ship them back and they will make a metal set in the shape you have created out of the plastic segments.
Interesting episode!!! I am partial to Mopars too, but these other brands are quite impressive also. It is interesting how he got another 20 hp by adding that 1" carb spacer... More torque too...

My FE 394 ci, .020 over that I built 30 years ago made 503 hp and 488 with a flat tappet solid and a 750 off of a 396 Chevy BB 375 hp. There are a lot of tricks to make it run. It started out as a 69 390 2V, but I had it bored .020, forged flat tops, and ARP rod bolts and a polish and peen and lightened the crank a lot and balanced it. I ported the heads and the Holley SD. I added a 1.5 spacer under the 750. 2.11 intakes and 1.6 exhausts with 2 inch primary pipes and 3.5 collectors 18 inches long. I looked at the torque wrong, it was 498 ft lbs and 503 hp and it pulls from 3200 to 6600 like magic and it will keep going to 7200. And not lay down. Idles at 1000 with 14 psig oil with a 9qt Canton deep sump with the trap door baffling and the 3/4 in Sump. I t jumps to 85 at 5500 and stays there. I wish I had put 2.19 intakes in. The heads are C4AE-G really good shape after I worked the short side and bowl. Ford knew what they were doing with the FE. My next one if I get to will be a 4.1 bore and 4.1 stroke for 433.0444 ci. I have a hyd roller from Bullet that with 2.19/1.6 valves should do close to 600 ft lbs and 700 hp according to pipemax. At 63, I need to get with it!
Really enjoy these videos. I get to thinking, watching these, that is must be so nice, to be able to go to work everyday, doing something exiting that you love to do, that's got to be huge.
You’re kind to say so. But it’s not all glory. Right now, Nick is hammering on the ignition of an old Honda.. just to make it limp to the scrap yard. Thanks for watching!
It may seem unusual but I know what you're talking about. If you haven't already, go watch Nick's video from late 2017 or early 2018 when he dyno'd a SBC that Nick built that is going into a 50's Olds dubbed "Bride of Frankenstein" That is a happy motor, my friend.
Brian Davis you do realize that the 427 that was outlawed is a completely different engine than this 427. About the only things they have in common is the displacement and number of cylinders. Not that this SBF 427 isn’t badass and all but a true FE 427 is the beast of which legends are built on. Especially the SOHC design, way ahead of its time.
Hi Nick! I had a Cobra in a few years ago for a engine rebuild (302). We put on shorty headers on backwards and custom fit to the side pipes. Still had room at the footwells. The stock fox body alt, P/S system won't fit. I think I still have pics of the set-up if ya want a look.
351 is a 9-5 deck and a 302 is a 8-2 deck so the 351 is a lot taller and wider than the 302 so unfortunately it's not usually a direct swap like people usually think it would be
the radio in the 53 buick is a very nice one. when I was in Oakland calif in the mid 60s those old buicks were everywhere. cheap and reliable. not fast or fuel efficient but they would keep running.
65 to 67 Ford Mustangs with the 289 the alternator sits down low I would look for some brackets for that style and switch all your pulleys over to a V belt instead of a serpentine
I know you resolved the power steering pump issue but that's why many cobras have manual steering. That's why many have such large steering wheels. You also have the option of electronic steering.
Thanks Nick, ☺️👍 that 427 Ford was impressive. I had a feeling it would make good torque because of the smaller intake. The 1inch riser was trick👍🇺🇸 Also, I like all American Muscle, Including Mopar. Knew a guy with a 340 in a dart. It sounded nice when accelerating
My dad had 5 Buick Specials back in the 60's and early 70's ranging from 1952 up to 1958 that he drove tell they broke to much for him to be able to repair then parked them in the pasture at our friends house in Pennsylvania the last one was parked in 1972 . the last I knew they were still there but with the salt used back then I wouldn't expect much to have survived all of them looked perfect when parked but you know what the road salt in Yew York and Pennsylvania is like . I've never had the heart to go and look I want to keep my memory's more then I want to get one of them back
Glad you called out the Ford C6...an amazing transmission that gets overlooked too much...The C6 was strong enough for the 428 CobraJet...nuff said...lol

I had to have the hydraulic lifters on my 1981 Opel Kadett 13.00 machined shorter when i replaced the cylinder head. The other thing you can do is machine out the lifter housing in the cylinder hea so the lifter seats lower so the rocker sits flush.
It's been a long time since I looked at kit cars, but you might want to figure out who built it, and get hold of them. As I recall, there used to be slight differences to all the chassis, and some of them were built to handle different motors. Superperformance or Factory Five or whoever might have headers that slide right in.

When it's right nothing sounds better! I like your channel.
Thanks for watching!
beautiful shots, great commentaries, beautiful cars...and Nick!!! Great video like always
Joe has a beauty on his hands...history on wheels!
I'm not a Ford guy, but that 427 sounds very happy !. what a rumble !!!!
It may seem unusual but I know what you're talking about. If you haven't already, go watch Nick's video from late 2017 or early 2018 when he dyno'd a SBC that Nick built that is going into a 50's Olds dubbed "Bride of Frankenstein" That is a happy motor, my friend.
Ford's 427 was so bad that's why it was out lawed in NASCAR, a bad mamma jamma.
@@briandavis35 yes all respect to the designers of that beast !!!!!
Yes, i am aware of the different engines. i'm an old gearhead , i once owned a 72 Cutlass S with an LS7 under the hood. talk about a sweet rumble lol
Hi Nick! I had a Cobra in a few years ago for a engine rebuild (302). We put on shorty headers on backwards and custom fit to the side pipes. Still had room at the footwells. The stock fox body alt, P/S system won't fit. I think I still have pics of the set-up if ya want a look.
I will figure it out, thanks.
Great channel Nick. You guys do great work. Regards from a 66 GT mustang driver in Adelaide, south Australia😊
351 is a 9-5 deck and a 302 is a 8-2 deck so the 351 is a lot taller and wider than the 302 so unfortunately it's not usually a direct swap like people usually think it would be
jason. I told my client. The 351 has taller decks.
the radio in the 53 buick is a very nice one. when I was in Oakland calif in the mid 60s those old buicks were everywhere. cheap and reliable. not fast or fuel efficient but they would keep running.
Car heaven. Most impressive video from the ultimate muscle car shop.
Love the shop! Nick is awesome! Hope you guys enjoy your two minutes of summer! 😂😂
Come on now, everyone up in Quebec knows they have at least 2 beautiful full days of summer! 😎
I miss Montreal, a gorgeous classic old city...
I built a 331 ford stroker and it makes more than enough power. Especially with a 84 ranger behind it.
Old School updated. What a great sound
Don’t matter what brand you love. All brands have good and bad engines. it’s about what makes you happy.
65 to 67 Ford Mustangs with the 289 the alternator sits down low I would look for some brackets for that style and switch all your pulleys over to a V belt instead of a serpentine
Can't wait to see the car done
Nicks garage will make any motor a better motor, cause Nick built it
Love seeing the giant Holly just dumping fuel into the engine.
I thought the fuel was pumped directly from the gas tank to the tailpipe in those engines.
D.O.A. 🤣👍
1953 Buick with Ford floor mats,
I love it. !
Glad to see you got a sunny warm day finally
act. It was about time
The 427 sounds great! Thanks for sharing your program. l'll check out the merchandise below.
Another fantastic episode Nick !
👍 Thank you again nice video show ! 😎. Good narration and music choice by your cameraman 👍🏼
Denis Lefebvre agreed Cameraman’s Top Notch 😀😎👍🏼
Denis Lefebvre i love this show, no personal fluff up dramas
Oh wow I miss classic cars no electronics no sensors thanks Nick for the trip in time
I know you resolved the power steering pump issue but that's why many cobras have manual steering. That's why many have such large steering wheels. You also have the option of electronic steering.
Wonderful and amazing horsepower and foot pounds of torque out of that nasty little Ford 427
Nick, I love your passion and tenacity working on cars. That is what it takes to enjoy them and work on them. ..new subscriber!
Thanks for signing up, Robert.
Talking about revolution(s) power, on the blue(s)! Thanks, Nick!
Awesome video as always thanks Nick
Another awesome dyno video nick. Great job
Thanks Nick, ☺️👍 that 427 Ford was impressive. I had a feeling it would make good torque because of the smaller intake.
The 1inch riser was trick👍🇺🇸
Also, I like all American Muscle, Including Mopar.
Knew a guy with a 340 in a dart. It sounded nice when accelerating
you can buy push rods in many different length. use a adjustable push rod tool to find the proper length
A 351 Windsor, Ontario block with 351 Cleveland, Ohio heads, 400 crank and forged 300 6 cylinder rods originated in 1971 mid-west match racing
I needed custom pushrods for my 315 dodge red ram . Great running engines !
@John Johnson . Yes, I have.
Nice work Nick!
This show is a perfect balance of tech and cars.
Thank you nick and crew.
When is the tv show coming?
My dad had 5 Buick Specials back in the 60's and early 70's ranging from 1952 up to 1958 that he drove tell they broke to much for him to be able to repair then parked them in the pasture at our friends house in Pennsylvania the last one was parked in 1972 . the last I knew they were still there but with the salt used back then I wouldn't expect much to have survived all of them looked perfect when parked but you know what the road salt in Yew York and Pennsylvania is like . I've never had the heart to go and look I want to keep my memory's more then I want to get one of them back
👍
Thanks Nick
On the cobra car, the 351 has a taller deck height. 8.2 vs 9.5. A 331 is perfect for those kit cars.
Should have just built that 302 small block. Nick looks like hes having a blast playing with those Fords!
Some of the best and rare fords
Best Channel on TH-cam .thanks Nick.
Dang! I'd like to have that stroker 427 in my Bronco in front of the C6. another great video! thanks!
Glad you called out the Ford C6...an amazing transmission that gets overlooked too much...The C6 was strong enough for the 428 CobraJet...nuff said...lol
302 stroker would of been the one one of my favorite small blocks
would “have” 🍺
How Much could they stroke it to in that AC Cobra Kit Car ?
@@davidtharp7767 u can safely stroke a 302 to a 347. I have a fresh 347 myself and it runs great. They used to have a issue with oiling but the new kits have fixed that
@@glenkritgainda4771 I'm thinking of Doing a 351 Windsor Stroker With a Ultra Hight Lift & Low Overlap Cam & screw in studs Edlebrock Torker Intake&small Holley-600 4 Bbl, Headers with H Pipe&Huge tailpipes from the Collectors on back to minimal mufflers & electronic Ignition. I did up a 289 that was bored 30 over or more Back in 77 that way & Outran a 1977 Pontiac Trans-AM 400 Cubic Inch with automatic like me. I outran him by 1.5 Car lengths in the Quarter in a Nail Biter. I had the stock 2 speed Auto tranny that had a way low Low in the Transmission Low gear & the Rear End was like 2.69 to 1( a 289 with a 2 Bbl carb car ). So the Jump from Low to Drive was so Big that even though the TransAm that went up in smoke on Stock Rear tires for a Second or two while my Stang just Lept off the Line Like a Frog caught & passed me, then my mustang finally Got back up in the Revs to it's torque sweet Spot&flew back by the Trans-Am in the Last 1/16th of a mile.We had marked it with orange spray paint 1/4th mile North of north city limits sign of Port Charlotte,Fl And Kept both cars floored the 10 miles North on Hwy 41 to North Port Charlotte which I think is Now called just North Port. I kept stretching it out slowly but surely till I was about 45 seconds to 1 minute ahead of him & Long had been out of sight ahead of him when I made the Southern North Port Charlotte, FL city limits sign & slid into the 7-11 gravel parking Lot, ran in & slapped 2 x $1 bills in the Cash Register Counter & grabbed 2 Budweisers out of the Barrel Of Ice Right there at the Cash Register Counter. I stuck His beer in My Jeans Pocket & Popped the Top on Mine & Was Guzzling Bud when he slid into the Parking Lot. He was Hollering U are Lying ! You have got to have a 390 in that Mustang! I popped the Hood&He almost Cried when he saw the Tiny Small Block. It( my car) needed a More Modern several speed Automatic & about double the Rows of Radiator it had Stock as a 2 BBl 289 auto Radiator& with an Honest to Goodness Effective Auto Tranny Oil-Cooler with a slow speed automatic electric Fan & Good Placement for airflow at Highway Speed & the aforementioned Screw in Studs. I actually would prefer to put it in a Stronger by far Body with a Real frame & Honest to Goodness Front End Suspension & rear End suspension because the Stock Mustangs of Old Had a big tendency to hydroplane APPROPOS No obvious cause or get sucked into the Side of a Semi You were passing or who was passing You. Not a Sturdy Body at all & Poor Handling ! That was my one & Only Hot-Rod & I built it myself off of Hot Rod Magazine's 289 Hop Up series they ran for about a year testing all Intakes & Cams & Carbs & Ignitions & Headers ! I wrote the Editor & He wrote me right back & said get a different cam than in the Test. We found a Better Cam after the Finished Mustang Hot Rod Issue was Published !! So My Hot Rod was a Tad Better than what they published as the good as can be 289 in about 1973 or 74 ! Just every time U ran it hard wide open You had to remove the Press in Studs & Clean them Up Good & clean the stud holes good & put them back in with Purple LocTite !! I had Bought a 1974 Corvette L-82 with T-Top& Silver Leather interior& ran out of Money to finish up the Stang Right.
Wow! What can I tell you...
Another home run! That '53 Buick is sweet, the burnout at the beginning was awesome and that SB 427 is super smooth and a perfect match for that beautiful AC Cobra replica. Too bad the 351 swap turned out to be a shitshow! Thanks, Nick, for another cool Monday!
🤓
That's a fine Buick!
I'd like to see a legit big block 427 on your dyno. Love the channel.
Engine they tested the 2nd time after the 427 solid vs hydraulic lifters the 2 nd try sounded and made power like a nice 390 at .030 over.
Wow, Nick made a FORD really run good!!!!! with no trouble
Thanks for another great video to make Monday better!
Nice job with the little small block Windsor!!!! That’s big block torque #’s.
Yes i love them all but can't get away from the performance of the original 351 Cleveland
I'm wondering if it would be worth going with stock exhaust manifolds.
Correct lifters from hot heads in North Carolina. If you re ground the cam you will need adjustable push rods or a measuring rod so you can order the correct length. But I'll bet you already know that.
Sharon. The new liters were correct. The old ones were collapsed.
‘53 BUICK👀A floating Sofa! 👍
LOVE IT! Work of Art😎
(Gotta get myself a ‘Staff’ shirt! Hell, Who am I tryin’ to fool?! Nick has forgotten way more than I’ll ever know :-)
Good stuff Guys✌️Thx for all that you do for us viewers!
😎The DYNO is like ‘crack’ for viewers👀Lol😂
Nick's memory power is his key to most of his succes
love the straight 8
I had to have the hydraulic lifters on my 1981 Opel Kadett 13.00 machined shorter when i replaced the cylinder head. The other thing you can do is machine out the lifter housing in the cylinder hea so the lifter seats lower so the rocker sits flush.
It's been a long time since I looked at kit cars, but you might want to figure out who built it, and get hold of them. As I recall, there used to be slight differences to all the chassis, and some of them were built to handle different motors. Superperformance or Factory Five or whoever might have headers that slide right in.
the move in the drinker side window then out the windshield was pretty cool
