Built, raced and repaired 3Vs. They are the absolute worst variation of the Modular. Not as reliable as the 2V or 4V and less power and potential than a 4V.
I am cool with that, if noone talks about them I can keep getting them off Craigslist free, I have a 4bolt main in my 72 and 3 spare block/heads in the office. Love my clevelands!!!
The Cobra “Terminator” engine should have been on this list. People thought Ford was crazy for using an iron block but that’s what made it tough. That engine was bulletproof and could take anything up to around 700hp with stock internals.

Joseph Taverna don't talk about something you can't brag about (IQ level). You have proven to embarrass us ford guts over and over again, by spewing your nonsense . You just say the same shit over and over again, (First on race day, 289 hi po evolved into 302, 429 in 2019, "my grandpa with 4 legs always says it ain't nothing if it dont run " ) Please tell me, how old are you? If you are 8 then I'm sorry just tone it down . If you are a 40 y/o virgin living in grandma's basement then I'm sorry again. I don't find it funny to make fun of retarded"special" people and I apologize . If you fall in between then yes this is exactly what I mean. I like all companies and all engines can be worked for more power, they are basically a pump, more air and fuel moved through it while combustion takes place efficiently the more power it makes.
From a mechanic's point of view, the engine that needs the least amount of work with the maximum amount of miles is the greatest, that leaves the 300 and 200 6 cylinder engines.
The Australian 250 is another one. Later ones had alloy cross flow heads, fuel injection, an intercooled turbo, and if they'd been allowed to play in America, would have made the kind of police cruiser that gave getaway drivers nightmares
To the best of my knowledge, they didn't, especially not Ford Australia's version. They had more than a few V6 injected engines, but no inline sixes like ours
that's truly a great motor Ted no doubt about it buddy one of the best Motors ever made and for this stupid morons out there that are saying that it's not they're full of it that's what I've got to say to them because I know better you have a good night to take care
Great video, BUT, you missed one of the greats: the 390 FE. I had a '68 F-250 Camper Spl, I ran the Odometer from about 80k to over 240k. Just did good maintenance on it, never had to take the motor apart. When I sold it, it still didn't smoke, & would light up the 16.5 x 10s in a cloud of smoke. And, with our 11-1/2 ft Camper, it would walk away from similar loaded GM & Mopars in the Mountains. That was a reliable & strong engine.
No one mentioned the Ford 2 valve 5.4 (330 cu.in.) I own an '02' E250 3/4 ton extd. van. Bought it with 153,000 miles, Jan. 2008. A fleet vehicle that had been serviced regularly, but run every day on service calls. It now has 300,000+ miles. I've driven it just short of 150,000 miles myself. Has never had any major work done to eng. or trans. Just normal service. Was just across the country in march '17'. Good, dependable, gutsy engine. Oh, I'm an OLD gearhead from the 50-60s era. 75, and still doing my own service work.
My gramps had a 352 in a '72 3/4 he pulled trailers with. It went 300,000+ with just regular oil changes. I'm sure it would have gone more but he sold it. Or how about the 460? Had one in a monster truck. What a beast.
My mom had a 68 mustang 428 4 speed with 3:73’s back-in the day, she was 5 feet tall and weighed 120 pounds. She also had a 66 Stang Hi-Po 289 auto with pony interior and a 74 351 Windsor Stang auto fastback. My first ride was a 63 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe 2dr factory Hi-Po 289 4spd 4:10 rear gear. One of only 400 some ever built and the only one sold in Minnesota. We also ran a 66 mustang dirt tack with a 351 Winsdsor. It was track champion 4 years in a row.
what in the name of god. you cannot go out and say youve got 7 of fords greatest engines and not include the unkillable 300 i6, or 390, powerful and reliable
Probably the most widely known and used motor from ford was the 460 V8. It was a 7.5 liter that was used in trucks and cars. They had a production life of about 30 years or so. There were a lot greater motors than the mustang motors
Too bad they left out the Ford 351 Windsor. I had one. Factory steel crank, 4 bolt main. It`s one bad ass engine that can take anything you throw at it, and in the end it ask for more. I beefed mine up to around 525 HP, and had it in a 69 Ranchero. Man, do i ever miss it,,,,,Nothing else like American Muscle !
thankfully Jon Kaase took the idea of the Boss 9 and made it available and easy to get I can look past its not OEM Ford but it is always on my mind.......
Well to look back on it, the 351C had such a short run that it really isn't easy to find today anyways. Ernie Elliott stated himself in the late 80's that they had raped every junk yard in the south to find any and every 351C they could find. Grant you, they were pushing 950+HP with their 351C with a little over 14:1 compression. So yes, it is a legend... And anyone that argues with the 950hp, well they Bill was pushing 217 down the straights on his 212mph record... A hellcat with 707hp cannot do but 185, so do the math...
A question for you then, do you include the marine straight 6 known as the Ford Lehman of which thousands of these 120 hp diesels are still in use today?
I rebuilt my 351C 4bl i had burnt a valve my uncle let me use part of his tractor/bus garage. He had a big thick book with all the tourges in it. Off whent the mach 1 hood. During rebuild i notice i could fit 3 fingers in the intake ports.
@@charlies.5777 dang that was three years ago lol. You are absolutely right. Slant six is probably better if not equal to the 300. Thanks for the reply.
The 351 Cleveland V8 should have been this list after all it provided the power for legendary Ford Falcon GTHO aust build they raced at Bathurst and in the ATCC, the Falcon in the early 70,s was the fastest 4door saloon in the world!! They sell for HUGE money ( $500 000+ + ) nowdays!!
mr. Phillips there's no doubt that 351 Cleveland is a legendary motor now on the other hand is it better than the 427 428 or 429 I don't think it's quite as good as those three however it does belong in the list like you said you have a great night buddy. Better day tomorrow take care
Geiger Counter I had a 62 XL 500 that was a real monster. froze it and warped the heads. rebuilt it, planed the heads and from then on nothing could catch it.
i highly doubt the barra will make it any video like this, its not a very well known motor outside of australia, which is a pity because they are a damn fine motor.
Watch at 2:44.-2:46 watch the Distributor cap, 2 wires of the cap going towards the Drivers side valve cover jump closer towards the valve cover , hmmm
The 429 Boss engine is a lot more than 375hp I understand why Ford advertised it lower so the insurance companies would insure them. History has shown that those Boss Hemi engines make over 520hp on the dyno.
The RACE versions maybe, but the street versions didn't make anything close to 500 HP as delivered. Now if you change the cam.... As delivered, in a 1/4 mile drag race, the street version BOSS 9's weren't the quickest mustangs in the 2 years they were build, although they probably did have the most HP - just not enough low end torque. The stock cam would give out no longer after the RPMs were high enough for those huge ports and valves to work. A motor designed for 8000 RPMs saddled with a street cam is a bad combination.
@@jamesshayte8148 The Ford 429 also known as the "twister hemi" was in fact an elliptical semi hemispherical head design and was considered as a hemi head in the automotive world.
Mark Godfrey oh I’m sorry I didn’t know that so just calm down u don’t have to get all worked up just because I didn’t know a couple things. Sorry if u got offended I just didn’t know about that. I’m not trying to start a problem
Boo Ya Heard the 5.0 is more reliable as well for the most part. Most reliable modern ford engines are the 5.0 and 3.5 duratec from the mechanics I've talked to.
It may eat it for dinner but will it last 500,000? The 4.6 2V will. Lots out there in cabs still going. The 5.0 coyote wouldn't be around if it wasn't for the 4.6.
110% CORRECT. The 3V was a reliability AND performance failure. The 2V was a mileage eating work-horse, and the 4V continues to dominate in the performance arena. The 3V didn't do anything particularly well, except eat its own valve-train and create an industry for spark plug extractors. Real Modulars have an even number of valves in each cylinder
I had a '66 T-Bird in the late seventies with a 428 "high performance" engine. At the Ford parts counter the parts guy told me Ford didn't make a 428. "Was it a 427 or a 429," he asked? I wasn't even 20 then so he thought i might be mistaken. Had to take him out and pop the hood for him. That was a nice car!
390 was same block and heads as the 428. The 460 is actually a better engine , it has canted valves and the valvetrain is more rugged than the 390-428.
4cyl Kent engine introduced as a 997cc in 1959 has endured in both road and racing guises. Ford still manufactures a modern version of the block still in use today by many racing, road and special app uses.
EXACTLY!! i get sick of seeing these so called"expert knowledged" lists of top motors,,and just about every single one is missing a few motors. to me,,it just shows the lack of true knowledge of the person(s) making the list. i know a true FoMoCo man when i see one. and this is definitely one of those lists.
Mach 1 you got to realize who you're dealing with one this website your bunch of s*** eating bowtie motherfukers so when you look at it and that platform it's all self-explanatory

William Little , I too was waiting for the Clevelands mention . Back in 1989 , I searched many salvage yards for a Cleveland . No luck . Then some one told me about an old country gas station , in franllinton NC , abot 30 miles from home . In a field with weeds all around it was a 1971 Mercury Cougar on cinder blocks. Behold a Cleveland was finally found . I bought it for 180 dollars . I haven't built it yet. It's on an engine stand , in my garage as we speak . It's a 2v , and has all stock dimensions , A 2v is more streetable , I wasn't looking for a high rpm motor , like the 4v . But , yes I saw what that motor could do on the drag strip . I may build it , and dhange motors , in my 95 Mustang GT . just to surprise some of the younger fellows . Imagine the eye brows raised , when an old drag racer from the 60's , surprises them at the light ! Of course it can't compete with the newly designed v8s , But the excitement you feel , when you feel the power of a non modular old style motor , lovingly built by your own hands . No electronics , just well designed ignition systems , any one can understand .
The California Garage the 5.0ho wasn't that great. It was built during the smog Era which was still trying to figure out how they could make clean performance engines. The ho suffered from small ports , small valves and only around 9-9.2:1 compression . 225hp at the crank was nothing special , but it did have 300 ft lb torque which helped it push the mustang to get decent acceleration times. And I'm talking about the very best HO, the cobra gt40 302 used in the 83 cobra was better. It had actual performance heads not the e7 heads which were an after thought (truck heads with mods), better flowing intake manifold and the later explorer used these parts too.
Along with 5 other V8 Mustangs, I owned a '65 fastback K code car with the 289 HIPO engine, a '70 Mach I with the 351 Cleveland 4bbl engine (which when my Dad and I tore it down to convert it to mechanical cam/lifters, much to our surprise and delight we discovered it had 4 bolt mains, so Ford must have substituted a Boss 351 block, presumably near the end of the '70 build cycle), and a 2000 Cobra R model (#288 of 300)with the 5.4 liter DOHC engine....three of the best V8 Fords ever built (a very recently retired Engineer who worked 31 years for America's largest defense contractor).
Lee Ford people unfortunately haven't started bombing them yet mate we had an all ford day and they were just horrible compared to the old winsors and todays barras
The list doesn't need to be expanded to fit the Coyote, replace the 4.6 3V with the Coyote and done. By no metric was the 4.6 3V one of Ford's best engines. It was the worst version of the Modular, overall.

LS/LTkiller never drove a 3valve huh?
LS/LTkiller are you stupid
Built, raced and repaired 3Vs. They are the absolute worst variation of the Modular.
Not as reliable as the 2V or 4V and less power and potential than a 4V.
No, are you?
LS/LTkiller nah it’s a good engine sorry
😄 The '69 Boss 302 was a great street racer and the drag way! I love this one.
300 straight six! They never tear up!
Really love the video keep up the good work man
Thank you David ! We really appreciate it
Kept waiting for my favorite: the 351 Cleveland. :(
same it was a huge let down
I am cool with that, if noone talks about them I can keep getting them off Craigslist free, I have a 4bolt main in my 72 and 3 spare block/heads in the office.
Love my clevelands!!!
The Cobra “Terminator” engine should have been on this list. People thought Ford was crazy for using an iron block but that’s what made it tough. That engine was bulletproof and could take anything up to around 700hp with stock internals.
Valve covers on a Boss 429 are the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen under the hood of a car
Yep, got to agree with that! Love to have me a 429...
427 side oiler best ford engine ever made
it'll eat them Chevys for f****** dinner
Dawson you don't get it Chevrolet people their IQs are very small that are there jealous c********** I'll say it again because in fact the 427 at 4:28 and 4:29 or all f****** winning Motors they can eat s*** and die the bow tie guys
FE FORDS BEST...
@Andrew Bartleman. Talk about IQ, your comment doesn't make any sense. You must be a bowtie boy.
Mechknight73 didn't the yanks get the cross flow ??
To the best of my knowledge, they didn't, especially not Ford Australia's version. They had more than a few V6 injected engines, but no inline sixes like ours
Mechknight73 lol sucks to be them lol.
Unfortunately, no. If we want one we have to look down under.
300 all day
351 Cleveland?
best small block they ever made!
Or the 351 Windsor
Yea that what i thinking lol
that's truly a great motor Ted no doubt about it buddy one of the best Motors ever made and for this stupid morons out there that are saying that it's not they're full of it that's what I've got to say to them because I know better you have a good night to take care
Ted Theobald 351M?
I'll stick with my Boss 351 Cleveland and the fastest quarter mile record for fastest production mustang for that Era. Thank you vary much!
I know you forget the coyote 5.0 that thing is awesome man
Great video, BUT, you missed one of the greats: the 390 FE.
You missed the Cleveland 351.
I totally agree the 1958 Lincoln 430 cubic being known as Hot rod Lincoln which set the racing seen on it's ear in amazement!
Papasmurf7597 my pops got a 1998 F150 with 199k on it, only thing hes changed is the oil lol
My gramps had a 352 in a '72 3/4 he pulled trailers with. It went 300,000+ with just regular oil changes. I'm sure it would have gone more but he sold it. Or how about the 460? Had one in a monster truck. What a beast.
Papasmurf7597 sounds like one hell of a tough old van that's pretty fucking awesome man! keep doing your thing old man!
Thank you Gerrit. I'm going to keep doing my own service work for as long as I can.
Great video! Feel a lot better about my 2008 GT
300 inline 6.
Excellent presentation and documentation Excellent presentation Excellent
presentation Excellent presentation
Oh they sound so good that 428 oh we Lord
390 was a great motor buddy no doubt no doubt Forge of the best I don't give a s*** what them both time on the f****** site
I agree the 390 should be up there, only motor you can safely bore 90 over and still run cool.
IKR
I agree with this whole list. And I’ve had the majority of these cars and motors. I’d add the 93-97 Ford F-Series 460 motor too.
Probably the most widely known and used motor from ford was the 460 V8. It was a 7.5 liter that was used in trucks and cars. They had a production life of about 30 years or so. There were a lot greater motors than the mustang motors
Good goddamn that blue 427 FE mustang sounds other worldly great
Too bad they left out the Ford 351 Windsor.
Man you are dumb.
Never heard of the early production 430 MEL? This was the greatest Ford engine of all times. 400+ hp stock!!!
Where's the 7.5l 460 v8, that's an absolute beast of an engine
Same engine family as 429 so no need to mention it.
they had multiple Windsors in there. why not have the best gas truck engine ford put out...@@Fendervana
That boss 429 though. On point. I wish Ford would have stayed with that cylinder head for all 460 production. It's a great head.
Never stand in line with the fan when revving an engine . . .
thankfully Jon Kaase took the idea of the Boss 9 and made it available and easy to get I can look past its not OEM Ford but it is always on my mind.......
Anything claiming to represent the best of ford engines without including the 351C, is rubish
this is the most truest comment by far
Well to look back on it, the 351C had such a short run that it really isn't easy to find today anyways. Ernie Elliott stated himself in the late 80's that they had raped every junk yard in the south to find any and every 351C they could find. Grant you, they were pushing 950+HP with their 351C with a little over 14:1 compression. So yes, it is a legend... And anyone that argues with the 950hp, well they Bill was pushing 217 down the straights on his 212mph record... A hellcat with 707hp cannot do but 185, so do the math...

My injected Windsor 302 just goes & goes, 350hp, room for plenty more but I am happy.
A great engine must be a durable and lasting engine. Ford's straight sixes were it's best for that.
Guess what, one best engines ever made was a ford 300-6 period
429 SCJ needs to be on the list (385 Block was a beast). And I'd go with the 5.0L as the ultimate Windsor Block.
300 inline six is the best for durability. Next would be a Honda or Toyota, sorry Chrysler and chevy guys.
More durable than a Mopar Slant SIX??!! NO disrespect to the 300, BUT I dunno if that's possible .
@@charlies.5777 dang that was three years ago lol. You are absolutely right. Slant six is probably better if not equal to the 300. Thanks for the reply.
Although the volume on the very last clip was lower than the rest, the 428CJ in that Mustang sounded absolutely fantastic!
Powerstroke 7.3 even when it was made by International was the best engine a Ford pickup truck ever had.
390 FE here 💪
Barra 6 Australian ford is greatest 6 ever built !
Nice sound
The 351 Cleveland V8 should have been this list after all it provided the power for legendary Ford Falcon GTHO aust build they raced at Bathurst and in the ATCC, the Falcon in the early 70,s was the fastest 4door saloon in the world!! They sell for HUGE money ( $500 000+ + ) nowdays!!
M XR8
mr. Phillips there's no doubt that 351 Cleveland is a legendary motor now on the other hand is it better than the 427 428 or 429 I don't think it's quite as good as those three however it does belong in the list like you said you have a great night buddy. Better day tomorrow take care
barry phillips Not to mention the De Tamaso Pantera
As a stock motor it was a slug.
One recently sold for 1 million plus.
My dad's '12 F-150 had a 302 (5.0 Coyote) in it. That thing was one pissed engine. I loved it
you did not mention the mighty 390, arguably one of the best engines Ford ever produced.
Geiger Counter I had a 62 XL 500 that was a real monster. froze it and warped the heads. rebuilt it, planed the heads and from then on nothing could catch it.
Except a Moris Minor.
Stuart Durbin amen
Stuart Durbin the 390 is a good engine very reliable
I totally agree. Have one in my 66Tbird. It's a beast.
The v8 engine they used in the police cars and Lincoln town car was a good one. Not for speed and power but they lasted forever!
The "Interceptor".
351 Cleveland the Cammer the Cosworth missing a lot
302? Sweetest sounding smallblock
forgot the best of these engines...the 4 liter Barra inline 6 engine
i highly doubt the barra will make it any video like this, its not a very well known motor outside of australia, which is a pity because they are a damn fine motor.
5 years later, and most us are still scratching our heads about the 3V 4.6. :P
I can't believe all the engines they left out! Y Block, MEL 430, CAMMER???!!!!
Nothing beats the sound of a Ford V-8.
I would offer that 'the greatest engines' are those that were most reliable and able to keep running even when worn out....
Mike Samra btw Hemi is mopar which is made by dodge ur talkin 2 different manufacturers here. Just thought I’d let you know
@@jamesshayte8148 The Ford 429 also known as the "twister hemi" was in fact an elliptical semi hemispherical head design and was considered as a hemi head in the automotive world.
Mark Godfrey oh I’m sorry I didn’t know that so just calm down u don’t have to get all worked up just because I didn’t know a couple things. Sorry if u got offended I just didn’t know about that. I’m not trying to start a problem
@@oh8wingman In 1969 Ford originally called it the "Blue Crescent".
WoW!!! That stang' was moving on. 🐎
The 4.6 is a great engine but the 3V is the worse of the lot. The 2V is way more reliable. The 4V has way more performance.
I had the 4.6 motor and I can tell you that the 5.0 like eat that motor for dinner
David Lane I've owned a 2V 4.6 and now a 2016 5.0 and the 5.0 stomps the 4.6 without even trying
That was a nice car!
no mention of the 390 or 460
390 was same block and heads as the 428. The 460 is actually a better engine , it has canted valves and the valvetrain is more rugged than the 390-428.
To be completely honest with you the 390s were the best motor ford ever made but the 460s were shit
@@spaceghost8995 How possibly is a stud mounted rocker system more rugged than a shaft mounted system? Night and day difference
4cyl Kent engine introduced as a 997cc in 1959 has endured in both road and racing guises. Ford still manufactures a modern version of the block still in use today by many racing, road and special app uses.
I feel that these are great engines but the best engine hand down ford ever built was the 300 straight 6
For reliability I agree, and I have also seen a guy cut 2 Cleveland heads to make one head for that 300 turning it into an absolute tire destroyer!
351 Windsor deserves a place in this video
No Boss 351? No 429 Cobra Jet/ Super Cobra Jet? C'mon!!
EXACTLY!! i get sick of seeing these so called"expert knowledged" lists of top motors,,and just about every single one is missing a few motors. to me,,it just shows the lack of true knowledge of the person(s) making the list. i know a true FoMoCo man when i see one. and this is definitely one of those lists.

Joseph Taverna Love it!!! But I like to put it THIS way,
I have WORK that has to get done so I drive a FORD,
I'm not a pee wee Herman wanna be so I don't drive Chevy's,
And my name ain't Achmed and I don't heard goats, that rules out ever driving a Dodge. Have a good day 😎
Longest burn out I ever did was in a 1970 t-bird with a 429 thunder jet. 365hp. My friend bought it for $ 150. Around 1980.
You guys forgot the 351 Cleveland HO in the 71 Boss 351 Mustang!!!
I was one of the lucky 1806 original owners of the BOSS 351 !! Loved that car **
Nice
If you want to talk about great how about the 5.0 HO from the 80s, they put that in everything
Andrew Bartleman yes but it was better then GMs engines, one had head gasket and block problems
Riiiight! They put them in everything! And used in mustangs from 79-95! May not have been the fastest, but damn good engine
One day, the Coyote will be on this list
adam aguilera I agree the 5.0L coyote is one fords best engines. And definitely one of the best modern V-8 out there.
Lee Ford people unfortunately haven't started bombing them yet mate we had an all ford day and they were just horrible compared to the old winsors and todays barras
Nope. That Coyote engine is good but the chain mechanism stabilizers are no good.
The list doesn't need to be expanded to fit the Coyote, replace the 4.6 3V with the Coyote and done. By no metric was the 4.6 3V one of Ford's best engines. It was the worst version of the Modular, overall.
Chain mechanism stabilizers? Are you talking about timing chain guides? Very few problems with them in Coyotes.
390 FE V8 and the 460 Big Block
No 300 not a legit list. Those things were bullet proof.
Yep they are bulletproof I've had one for 30 years and it still running right now
